Russell Simmons Endorses Obama

Russell Simmons speaks at a news conference in New York February 28, 2006, about the Smithsonian National Museum of American History's decision to add items from Hip Hop culture to the permanent collection. (Reuters.)
By Darryl Fears
The gospel of Sen. Barack Obama might not have opened up the heavens, as Sen. Hillary Clinton sarcastically suggested in a recent speech, but it apparently opened the eyes of one of her self-described friends and supporters, Russell Simmons. The music mogul, entrepreneur and staunch yoga practitioner endorsed Obama over the weekend.
"I see him as a different kind of candidate," Simmons said, echoing a refrain that is repeated over and over by converts to Obama's political message. "I see him as more of a spiritual inspiration, as much as a politician. The idea that other people are experiencing a change in themselves. I see that as an important part of the process."
A day before two decisive Democratic primary votes in Texas and Ohio, the question is not what Obama can do for Simmons. It's what Simmons can do for Obama. Simmons is the third richest man in hip-hop, with a net worth of more than $300 million, behind the rappers-turned-music-executives Jay-Z and Sean "P. Diddy" Combs. Young black voters have turned out in droves to cast ballots for Obama -- and Simmons could inspire even more.
Obama's campaign said Simmons will jet to Cleveland tomorrow to make appearances at a barber shop, a community college, a public housing complex, and a favorite stop of both Democratic candidates, a local high school.
But first, Simmons "dropped some knowledge," the hip-hop term for divulging previously unknown nuggets of information. "I did hear that the Obama camp got a call from Sean Combs," Simmons said. "I did hear from 50 Cent's camp that he didn't know about Hillary anymore."
What does that mean? He won't say. And Combs and 50, a.k.a., Curtis James Jackson III, couldn't be reached for comment. Combs and Jackson have been politically active in the past. Four years ago, Combs led a now defunct get out the vote effort for youth called "Vote or Die!"
Jackson wore one of the effort's red, white and blue T-shirts.
But with 80 percent of the primary already over, there's more die remaining than vote for those who didn't cast ballots in Simmons' hometown of New York. A legion of black celebrities have already stumped hard for Obama, including rapper/singer Wyclef Jean, CSI:NY star Hill Harper, actress/model Kerry Washington, singers John Legend and Usher, and most notably, Will I.Am, whose star-studded "Yes We Can" video take on Obama's catch phrase was recently followed up by a second.
So why did Simmons wait until now? "It was a long process," Simmons said. In a kind of twisty, topsy-turvy way, he explained: "I've known the Clintons before they were in Harlem. I had a great...I'm still in their camp. I'm just endorsing Sen. Obama. A lot of people feel that way. I'm happy she's my senator. I think she'd be a good president. I think Obama would be a better president."
Simmons' ex-wife, model Kimora Lee Simmons, owner of the Baby Phat clothing line, has endorsed Clinton, saying she likes the way a woman inspires the couple's two daughters.
"I have known Hillary for many years and have seen her work passionately on many issues, including poverty, education, and prison reform," Kimora Lee Simmons said. "As a mother, I have learned that you must lead with your head, not just your heart, and I'm confident that Hillary will be the President to bring our country together and deliver a brighter future for all Americans."
At the Hip-Hop Summit that circulates across the nation, artists and the people who buy the music -- white youngsters, mostly -- say they are concerned about the Iraq war and the ideological roadblocks in Congress. Black fans are deeply concerned about what they consider to be unequal justice against their community in the criminal justice system.
Simmons, who helped organize the summit, took note of an Obama speech on prison reform. "I'm compassionate and smart enough to know these first time offenders can be made better and can come back to the community rather than be in a jail culture. There are a lot of issues like that, the way he speaks to them."
Pausing, he thought about how his friend Hillary Clinton might take this: "I hope I still have a friendship with her that's lasting beyond this choice, not just a friendship but a working relationship. I hope we get past it."

I am sad to see many lost sight of what's really at stakes: this country is in trouble, trillions of debt, growing deficit, mortgage trouble, inflation. Who's best hand in this situation? Hillary. Obama's is a gamble that this country cannot afford to risk. Some buy into Obama's poll result of independents support. Poll can be wrong and change with time. I am independent who rather vote for McCain than Obama. His hope pitch rings empty. He shrewdly used that and the black votes to win small caucuses early on to built up momentum and use the momentum to project air of inevitability. Caucuses tactics won't work in general election, and many of his won states are traditional GOP states where he stand no chance against McCain. So he's far from tested and invincible for general election. His image unfits as leader of the free world by kowtowing to rogue nation like Iran. Hillary had experience with Bill to turn the country around before, it's not luck as attacker's belittlement likes you to believe.

Although I'm a hip-hop and Russell Simmons fan, it's funny to me that he keeps flip floppin' on his vote like a 8 pound tuna on the river bank. In October, he was a Kucinich supporter. In January a supporter of Mrs. Clinton, and now days after this article from a grimy street magazine hits his desk http://thebootycrack.ning.com/profiles/blog/show?id=1627809%3ABlogPost%3A1044
he's now an Obama supporter. I love the fact that he's powerful enough for everyone to care about who he supports, it's just funny to me that he doesn't have any loyalty. According the article, his support of Clinton derived from them both being on the board of Wal Mart. Well, if I was her and I won the nomination, I would ban Hip-Hop and his comedy show on HBO as my very first initiative as President. I mean, pick something and stick wit for Christ's sake. Anyway, as an Obama fan I'm glad that he's on the Midnight Train, although I suspect that he won't be on board for long.

I feel sorry (!) for Hilary. You can't fight an ephemeral cloud of woolly-thinking, as exemplified by Obama. He's all talk and has no real policies or answers and is just selling "change". The fault lies with the US citizenry, who are always after the "next new thing" and in this case, believe they'll get a "nice, shiny NEW politician" and will be sorely disappointed.
That said, I couldn't support, Hilary either, or McCain. All three will lead a chrage further down the rabbithole of BIG Government, expanding money supply, unfathomably huge debt and implementation of the CFR agenda - which will see the "middle class" wiped out by inflation.
Only one guy has anything worthy to say, but no-one is LISTENING - to Ron Paul.
This election will be a contest to see who gets to be the Captain of the Titanic....oh, woe.

For the record, I served in the Army during the Korean War, and Barack HUSSEIN Obama will not be sworn in as President on January 20, 2009. The rest of the personal attacks against me, above, are not even worth a reply. I will be golfing this morning but will try to check back later when the polls close. If not, see you tomorrow.

I wonder if Obama can convince him that the "n-word" should not be used by rap artists. No, I guess not, Simmons has made too much money off of that word.

Jake D, I have NO idea why you're so determined to make sure every Muslim in the world knows how much Americans hate and despise them - because that's what you're obviously trying to do. Our guys are over there trying to convince the Irawis we want to help them stabilize their country - while you're acting like a fifth column for al-Qaeda.
Why do you want to drum up more recruits for the insurgents in Iraq? Do you really enjoy reading about when our armed forces get blown up? Killed and maimed?
Bet you wear a flag pin on your lapel and brag about how 'patriotic' you are, too. Probably smile broadly when you look in the mirror and swagger down the street.
btw - just how did you manage to evade military service yourself? Did you have 'other priorities' like Cheney?

whatmeregister-Nice talking points about Mitt Romney.
And YOU criticize another about Maturity?!
Mitt Romney was scuttled by a collusive effort on the part of Giuliani, and al-Huckleberry. While they ganged up to detract from Romney(Huckster), and support McCain(Giuliani), it costed Mitt Romney valuable percentages.
There are two undeniable facts.
First, that Mitt was Always the one to beat(He constantly was a contender, or outright victor), and second, that He and McCain both have a Weak Side, and a Strong Side, and they are each other's opposites!
The Military astute McCain, would be very, VERY smart, in chosing the Business Astute Mittster, as his perfect compliment!
The GOP should force it with a "Shotgun Wedding" if need be! :-)
Then, allow this RAT to "Flip" your Obasama "Flop"! ;~)

Hillary is a walking target for the Republicans. Rove and the boys have been getting ready for the moment to start the attacks on Hillary and Bill for at least two years now. Obama has a far better chance of successfully running against Mc Cain. If all Hillary can come up with is the fact that people want something to hope for and believe in after some desparate times, does anyone remember "A place called Hope"?, than Obama is in great shape to face Mc Cain.
The polls have shown, and I have seen this also on an anecdotal basis, that independents and undecided Republicans would vote for Obama before they would vote for Hillary. Hillary doesn't have a chance against the Republicans. Look what they did to her husband.

I am really interested in why you guys think Obama, rather than Hillary, can beat McCain in November? In the latest poll I saw, McCain runs ahead of Obama on every issue except health care -- he has a 13-point advantage on Iraq and a 37-point lead on terrorism in general -- he even does better on managing the economy vs. Obama.

You are right that I have "no desire to see either Democratic candidate elected in November" at least.

dab,
JakeD is a Republican supporter who wants to see more anti-choice judges appointed to the Supreme Court. He has no desire to see either Democratic candidate elected in November, and his sole motive in posting on these threads seems to be to tear down both candidates in roughly equal measure. Not too long ago, he was trying to get posters to pledge not to vote for Hillary in the fall; now he's decided to act like a 12-year-old and play the "Name Game" to anooy Obama supporters as well. You'd think someone in their 70s would have attained at least a tiny measure of maturity over the years, but that doesn't seem the case here.
On the other hand, maybe he's just become unhinged that HIS candidate, Mitt Romney (AKA the GOP's "Hillary in male drag" for his say-anything, flip-flopping triangulation) was forced out of the race by a true conservative, Sen. McCain. You can see by the reactions of some of the Clintonistas how being on the losing end of a contest can drive one to behave irrationally, so I suppose the same thing can happen to GOP losers.
Posted by: whatmeregister | March 3, 2008 7:52 PM
What questions have been asked of Hillary in this contest beyond being crowned as Queen. Yet she complains about media adversity.
If Clinton was in Obama's shoes, she would have been declared a winner long ago. Obama always face a threshold that is unreal. he has to justify his religion, his friends, his wife's thesis, his pastor, his use of words that everyone is free to use, his policies, his speeches, etc.
Hey but this is america where all men are created "equal!"
Posted by: kwakuazar | March 3, 2008 7:48 PM
Ahhh, so that's JakeD's motive. He's just hoping we'll get to Bomb bomb bomb bomb bomb iran.
Thanks for sharing the poll results, I'm sure that'll bring the anti-catholic Arizonan and his menopausal-barbie wife a lot of joy while he gets his naps in before the general.

Here's at least one of my pending questions to you (last time I will ask, I promise): did you see the latest LA Times / Bloomberg poll showing McCain leading BOTH Clinton and Obama nationwide?
(Again, I like to educate people with little known facts ; )

dab23:
I don't think I have failed to answer any of your questions -- I do recall asking you questions, however, on a previous thread that have remained unanswered -- to answer your questions here as well: I am not playing the race card, although I think it is important to educate people about little known facts.

I know that Darryl Fears objects to people being able to freely comment on his entries, so I'll just point out that perhaps he should have done just a little bit more work to make this less like a press release and more like a news report.
I mean, I'm sure his paycheck has "Washington Post" on it and not "Russell Simmons", so perhaps he might consider pointing out the ways those "converts" are being misled.

Hillary was as of late was seemingly making some inroads into this 18-29 year old category, but this endorsement will surely further help Obama, as the Internet Indicators show us:

Hillary and Bill Clinton have made a significant issue about how the press is treating Hillary unfairly in their hyper-critical reporting on her and their "softball" reporting on Barak Obama. Hillary maintains she has been fully investigated by the media and Barak hasn't!
As the Tony Rezko trial begins in Chicago, Clinton and her surrogates are linking Obama to Rezko and the media is speculating about whether Obama will be called to testify as a witness in the case. Obama has always admitted he received $85,000 in contributions from Rezko which Obama has now donated to charity rather than keep.
Yet the civil fraud trial of Bill Clinton for defrauduing Hillary's largest donor in 2000 into giving her campaign more than $1.2 million, pending in Los Angeles courts since 2003, is now preparing for a November, 2008 trial. The discovery that is now proceeding after a February 21 hearing, and the pending trial, have NEVER been announced by the mainstream media.
Hillary was able to extricate herself as a co-defendant in the case in January, 2008 after years of appeals to be protected by the First Amendment from tort claims arising out of federal campaign solicitations she made. Her abuse of the intent of California's anti-SLAPP law after the California Supreme Court refused to dismiss her from the case in 2004 is emblematic of her contempt for the Rule of Law.
Hillary will be called as a witness in both discovery and the trial according to the trial court Judge who so-advised Hillary's attorney David Kendall when he dismissed Hillary as a co-defendant in 2007. A subpoena is being prepared this month and will be served personally on Hillary, along with Chelsea, Pa Gov. Ed Rendell, Al Gore and other well known political and media figures.
Yet the media has refused to report about this landmark civil fraud case- brought by Hillary's biggest 2000 donor to her Senate race, regarding allegations that were corroborated by the Department of Justice in the criminal trial of Hillary's finance director David Rosen in May, 2005. That indictment and trial was credited as resulting from the civil suit's allegations by Peter Paul, the Hollywood dot com millionaire Bill Clinton convinced to donate more than $1.2 million (according to the DOJ prosecutors and the FBI) to Hillary's Senate campaign as part of a post White House business deal with Bill.
The media - except for World Net Daily- has also suspiciously refused to report on Hillary's last FEC report regarding her 2000 Senate campaign, filed in January 30, 2006. In a secret settlement of an FEC complaint by the plaintiff in Paul v Clinton, Peter Paul, the FEC fined Hillary's campaign $35,000 for hiding more than $720,000 in donations from Paul, and it required Hillary's campaign to file a 4th amended FEC report.
In that report Hillary and her campaign again hid Paul's $1.2 million contribution to her campaign and falsely attributed $250,000 as being donated by Paul's partner, Spider Man creator Stan Lee, who swore in a video taped deposition he never gave Hillary or her campaign any money.
Lee did testify to trading $100,000 checks with Paul to make it appear he gave $100,000 to Hillary's campaign (admission of a felony) but none of that has been reported by the "overly critical" media!
Where is the outrage from Obama that the press is engaging in a double standard relating to his possible role in the Rezko trial and his refunding the $85,000 contributed to his campaign by Rezko- which Obama has always admitted taking. The media makes no mention of Hillary's role as a witness in Bill's fraud trial for defrauding Hillary's largest donor- and Hillary's refusal to refund the $1.2 million she illegally received from Paul, which she has denied taking from Paul ever since the Washington Post asked her about Paul and his felony convictions from the 1970's before her first Senate election in 2000?
