Bats are cool. We had plenty in our back yard in NoVA and I'm glad to say we have them here in the frozen north as well.

It seems logical that an animal would develop flight before echolocation, what with the necessity to orient oneself in three dimesions while seeking prey. If you are not moving about in three dimensions, then you have no impetus to evolve the means to do it better.

To those who may posit that such a fine-tuned sense MUST be designed and not evolved (not that there are any of you here), I refer you to the blind humans who have learned to use a form of echolocation to orient themselves.

8/10 with 3 guesses got first guess #3 right then fumbled on #9 and #10. I should have gotten #10 right though if I had actually given it some thought.

If I see him, with his reporter's gear and digital camera, should I invite him someplace, post-rally, for a tall marguerita, offer him some jalpeno poppers? If I spiced him out, would he fail to meet some press deadline? If he ate too many habaneros, should we call him "Hot Lips Achenbach"?

I'm pretty sure I'd recognize him if I saw him. Is he on some press bus or plane? If we talked to each other, would it be like two people interviewing each other? Would we hug? Shake hands? He has a photo of me that I sent taken at the Texas Book Festival. Would he recognize me? Or would he hang with the press pack? Is Dave Barry in town, too?

Well, if it's bats Joel's interested in, Austin is the place. But the Mexican female free-tail bats don't migrate until the spring, I believe, until after they're impregnated in Mexico.

Or, he could get the DVD of that Swiss movie, "Vitus," that we saw Sunday night at home about the 12-year-old musical prodigy, who is obsessed by bats--in Switzerland, no less.

Will Joel be at the rally tonight, Clinton's last stop before she flies to Wisconsin? Obama is way behind here, just setting up about 10 campaign offices and running Spanish-language ads. But I do think that by now, Obama probably has "Si, se puede" down pat. Unfortunately, in New Hampshire he wasn't aware of its context, which didn't help him much in Nevada. Que lastima!

I'm down with Christian Bale from start to finish--Adam West, not so much. My theory is that when they audition a Batman actor they mostly look at the lips, since that's what shows when he's wearing the costume. That's how Val Kilmer and Michael Keaton got the role. Christian Bale had to overcome his lack of voluptuousness in the lip department and also his relative scrawniness coming off of his weight-loss stunt for The Machinist -- he had to get the part based on his acting ability and stage presence.

The bat "was capable of powered flight...": because under its wings they found the fossilized remains of a pair of 1/3,600 HP Briggs and Stratton two-cylinder, two-cycle engines. Each one drove a teeny-tiny fossilized three-bladed Hartzell propeller, which system consisted of far more than just blades mounted in a hub at the front of the typically configured flying marsupial. First, the propeller hub serves as a device to contain the blades' centrifugal force. Second, the hub assembly contains an even teeny-tinier blade pitch change mechanism that adjusts blade angle. Of fundamental importance in the design of this pitch change mechanism is the manner in which it defaults upon loss of control input (usually engine oil supply for the typical hydraulically actuated system). A twin-engine bat will default to feather and a single-engine bat will typically default to low pitch. When oil pressure is lost during an aerobatic maneuver, the propeller will coarsen pitch thus resulting in a reduced RPM, thus preventing an engine overspeed.

Bat propeller construction may consist of an "clam-shell" hub where the hub captures the blades, or a hub "spider" design where the blades are clamped to a hub. The blades would additionally incorporate a leading edge erosion sheath to protect the blade from both abrasion (sand) and erosion (water) as well as offer an external conductive for a lightning strike.

The pitch control typically comes from a hydraulic fly-ball governor mounted on the batwing. The governor senses whether the engine/propeller is running at the correct RPM and either supplies or maintains oil flow to the propeller, or drains oil to the engine sump. Of course, it is very important that the engine-mounted governor be properly matched to the propeller for proper pitch change command and response.

But you guys probably knew that.

I have to admit that, as much as I appreciate what bats *do* (eat bugs, for example), I very much prefer they do it outside of my proximity. Something about their appearance, especially close up, just weirds me out.

Several years ago we checked into a hotel outside of Yosemite and found that there was a bat in the hallway. Raysdad and another guy set to work getting the critter back out into the wild. A lawn rake, broom, bucket, flyswatter, and pillowcase were deployed in this effort. And since the little guy was finally convinced that going out the window, unharmed) vs. dealing with deranged masculine types wielding said tools was in his best interest, it's pretty funny in hindsight. At the time, I was just trying to stay out of his flightpath.

I never got around to visiting the Green River Formation, but it really is a fantastic fossil bed. Our own local geological specialty in NW Wyoming was bentonite, a clay formed from volcanic ash falling into salt water. The stuff is valuable as drilling mud for oil wells, so it's sold world-wide. Bentonite exposures are dark, kind of fluffy, with little silvery saltbushes growing on them. A perfect extraterrestrial setting for a sci-fi movie.

Anyway, it looks like bats are catching up to whales in the fossil league.

Bat trivia:

In the Florida Keys, one thing we never run out of is mosquitos. An enterprising person once got the idea that since bats eat mosquitos, it would be a good idea to bring some in. This guy built a "bat tower" in Sugarloaf Key, about 20 miles up the road from Key West. The bats didn't hang around long, but the tower is still there and it's one of the things we used to take out of town visitors to see, just because it's an excuse to get out into the undeveloped part of the Keys.

One of our family stories involves a city boy who was courtin' my stepdaughter--they were both in college and he came with her to visit us in Key West. We took them out to the bat tower, and the hike included some muddy spots (it's kinda swampy in the Keys). The would-be swain was wearing expensive sneakers, and the quote he uttered that he will NEVER live down in our family was this: "I'm having a bad experience."

(I guess tromping through mud to see an abandoned bat tower was not his idea of a fun day. Who knew? Everybody else was having a great time.)

Will VA go blue in November? Looking at voter turnout, even in Kim's neck of the woods, tell me it's looking that way. A poll of the Tidewater VA Frostclan + ex-spouse of a Frostsis yields a 7-0 sweep for Obama. Interestingly, though all connected by family ties the voter demographics they would fall into are pretty diverse along race, income, education and age lines. Hmmmm, seems like a social networking story here somewhere.

They are not that bad Raysmom, things will settled down, eventually.

Just because our current president hails from the great state of Texas (sorta) doesn't mean that we make more $h!t than anyone else, though it might seem logical to assume so.

I love bats. I am bats about bats. Oddly, we don't see bats in our neck of the woods, though we've seen them in nearby woods. When I lived in DC I liked to hang out at the National Cathedral gardens at sunset, to watch the bats swoop around the belfry. Someday the Boy and I will visit the bat cave in western Oklahoma.

Clearly, though, I didn't know much about bats, technically speaking. Thanks, Mudge, for explaining so clearly the principles behind bat flight.

I think some people find bats creepy because (and I say this with affection) they look so unnatural. They have wings but no feathers, look like mammals but aren't furry, and up close their faces look like little people. Slightly suspicious people.

My car window sticker proclaiming "I [heart] Bats" does attract attention.

I also like the word "bats". The word "bat" is fine, but the combination of sounds involved in the plural, "bats", has both a nice mouth-feel and a satisfying ring to it. Bats. Bats. Bats.

It is almost as good, for purposes of repetition, as "chicken". For pure sound quality, "bats" is even better.

[Footnote: when repeated many times, the word "chicken" becomes pure nonsense syllables and loses all meaning. This is fun on a slow day, or with a small child.]

Reading the latest issue of the Rails to Trails conservancy mag this bit about Muncie Indiana struck me as boodle worthy. In a piece about the Cardinal Greenway Depot, a restored railroad depot on the national registry, they say "...guys should check out the men's room to view a urinal of epic size and proportion."

I now have a burning desire to sneak into a men's room, like I haven't felt since grade school where the visit was accompanied by much shrieking and an untrustworthy lookout who was supposed to warn us of Sr. Mary Phillip's approach. How can I plan the summer vaca so Muncie is "on the way?"

Ohio may not be as big geographically as Texas, and doesn't brag nearly as much on a per capita basis, but dangit... we were a bona fide State *years* before Texas was even a twinkle in the eye of Sam Houston or Billy Ray Joe Bob Cyrus Hucklebuck (or whoever the heck founded it).

Joel *must* come to Ohio to cover the pending Hillary/Barack debate that just *might* be held right here in my rusty-belted steeltown of Youngstown in the next few weeks.

There's no M&S here with the famous $1.99 burger specials, but we do have some pretty darn good eateries and drinkeries that would satisfy even the most discerning taste buds. And here's the kicker -- I'll even treat (not the whole gang of you, just Joel [nothing personal, I'm just not independently wealthy]).

Back to "getting high on lacquer land"... I really should install an exhaust vent in the shop, but I think that would somehow diminish the fun factor on lacquering days.

A startling sight at Orlando's Leu Gardens is a walk lined with a tall variety of crape myrtle. The trees are roughly the size of large blossoming cherries and are gloriously unmutilated.

One of the jobs in my yard is to remove (or move) and replace "temporary" shrubs and such that have given shelter to longer-lived "permanent" plants. It's been interesting watching tiny palms, Simpson stoppers, beauty berries, and heliconias getting big.

Sorry, Gomer. It's not just the most recent resident in the White House--he's only one of them carpet-baggin' Yankees anyway.

Dave.. frosti... My dad spent countless hours moving azalea bushes all around the nearly one-acre yard. It gave him great pleasure to find just the right spot for the right size bush. His careful pruning kept them as perfectly wild-looking as they should be. Almost a zen-like shaping. His yard was stunning in late April and early May when the dogwoods and azaleas were at their loveliest gaudiness.

The last time I drove him by the old house (my childhood home he sold after Mom died in 2004) in its full splendor, he cried, and never wanted to see it again. I can't drive down that street any more in the spring. Too hard now.

All this talk of bats reminded me of Mudge's epic BATtle from a little over a year ago:

strafing in his kitchen.

Then from the female throats and Mudge's too there rose a lusty yell;

was advancing to the bat.

There was meaning in Mudge's manner as his eyes surveyed the place,
there was menace in Mudge's bearing and a grimace lit his face.

And responding to the screams,
he gave the girls a pat,
but his gaze transfixed,
there was no doubt t'was Mudge against the bat.

Six eyes were upon him as he rolled up that day's paper
His waving it towards the patio door began a little later.

Then, remembering the fishing net he bought, now stored in his garage,
defiance flashed in Mudge's eye, as he would now the bat dislodge.

And when he returned with tool in hand, his foe perched in the air,
and Curmudgeon stood a-watching it in haughty grandeur there.

"Have at you," Mudge shouted, swinging, "You filthy airborne rat!"
"I'm not a rodent," came the disdainful reply, "I'm clearly more than that!"

"Strike one!" the bat added, dodging deftly.
From the kitchen, up went a muffled roar,
like the beating of the storm waves on a stern and distant shore.

"Kill him! Kill the bat!" the shouts came, as if from a far off land,
and they might have grabbed a gun to shoot him had not Curmudgeon raised his hand.

With a smile of Jack Nicholson intensity, great Mudge's visage shone,
he stilled the rising tumult, he bade the chase go on.

He girded his loins, then waved his net, and once more the dun chiroptera flew, but Mudge again whiffed with his net at it, and the bat taunted, "Strike two!"

"Fraud!" cried the maddened women, and the bat echo-answered "Fraud!"
But one furious glare from our man Mudge and the audience was awed.

They saw his face grow stern and cold, they saw his muscles strain,
and they knew that Curmudgeon wouldn't let that bat go by again.

The sneer has fled from Mudge's lip,
his teeth are clenched in hate.
He pounds, with cruel violence,
his net upon the plate.

And suddenly the bat flees the curtain rod, to freedom he tries to go,
and now the air is shattered by the force of Mudge's blow.

Oh, somewhere in this mixed-up land sunrise is warm and bright.
Gordon Lightfoot is playing "Wreck" somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light.

And, somewhere Boodlers are laughing, and little children shout,

but there is no joy in Mudgeville --
mighty Mudge has batted out.

Our hero left his netted quarry on the patio table that night,
to its own devices,
All that remained by dawn's first light,
A note:
"Net: $10. Beating Mudge: Priceless."

Lest I leave this last line alone,

DotC-I see a lot of plant carnage in Tampa, but I think Floridians in general take much better care of Crape Myrtles than folks farther north who seem to think pollarding is required. Oh that more people were like you and would think of temporary homes for plants, and plan for their relocation down the line. (I daresay we'd have fewer of the stuck chainsaw stories) Deep frenvy on the heliconias. I wanted to buy some for our Chinese New Year party arrangements but couldn't stomach the price for something I used to cut freely from our yard in Hawaii.

Gol Dang it, I was looking at Dooleys blog and he posted this awhile ago. Some of you locals with youngins may want to check it out. Darn, I would go if it wasn't so far.

I find myself strangely almost on topic.

I just took a company required survey. What a waste of 35 minutes. This guy drones on in a sleep inducing slow motion voice. I read the actual text in less than half the time. At the end of each section is a question you have to answer before proceeding. Reading the text, or listening to the man is pointless, as the answer is absolutely completely common sense.

TBG-I'm all about "4 season interest" in the garden, but give me an azalea and dogwood filled expanse in its full glory and I'd trade away everything else. When we bought our NoVA house I started moving the misplaced contractor planted azaleas even before our furniture was delivered. I understand your avoidance of the old place completely.

I stayed up late to watch an interview with Jackie Stewart last night. Jackie Stewart commentated for CBC way back in the days when they showed the entire race season on CBC on early Sunday mornings. That is a biography I absolutely must read.

Just so you know, Jackie Stewart is the voice too, only more Scottish. Scotch?

My claim to fame is that I am a (third?) cousin to the singer Johnny Horton. Him I did meet. He came to a family gathering at my house about 1953-4 or thereabouts.

Jackie used to cover the big races for ABC's "Wide World of Sports," too. The Monaco GP, Indy 500, even the Daytona 500 IIRC.

You could always tell when something important was happening; Stewart's voice went up in pitch to where only bats and dogs could hear it. My mom still does a *great* Excited Jackie Stewart imitation.

And yes, for all that, he is still The Man, though he never *was* quite Jim Clark, and every F1 record he set has been shattered by Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, and the Mighty Michael Schumacher.

And he never did win the Indy 500 - though he sure was close.

My neighbors' azaleas did well this year--maybe the cold snap in January. I'm trying a couple of sasanqua camellias (the type Red Barber commented on when talking to Bob Edwards from Tallahassee on NPR).

My big heliconias took several years to start flowering, but once established, they and the smaller ones behave like the (native) roadside weeds they are in Central America. The small ones can give you nearly-instant landscaping and perhaps attract the occasional hummingbird, too. I think a big British seed catalog sells our beach sunflower, Helianthus debilis. It likes sand and heat. Should thrive in Washington summers.

I do want to thank you though as I brought in my calendium (sp) and calla lilly for the winter and both are doing well inside, calendium broke its hibernation a few weeks ago and has quite a few leaves now, the calla has just popped a new grow - still very small. Decided again any special storage conditions just new soil and pots and put them in the family room on tables (moderate light).

Can I talk you into adjudicating on the word "comprise" Mudge? I noticed Joel uses it right every time. Almost all other writers and newsreaders - not so much. They say things like "the soldiers comprising the Army."

Cowboys, being notorious imitators, saw what rodeo performers and Western movie stars were wearing and wanted the same thing. Since they couldn't afford to buy a custom-made gabardine shirt from famous tailors such as Rodeo Ben of Philadelphia, the cowboys got their wives and sweethearts to improvise. Then Jack A. Weil, a partner in Miller and Company of Denver, saw a Chinese tailor in San Francisco putting glove snaps on a shirt and decided to use simliar but better ones on his firm's shirts. So finally, in 1939, working cowboys could buy commercially produced Western shirts with snaps.

My understanding is as described in line 4 of Omni's post- things can be "comprised of" components, but composing is what the components do to make up the whole. This contradicts omni's later assertion that a "team comprises its members." Again, it is "comprised of" its members.

Jumper, I hate the whole "compose versus comprise" business, and I can never remember which is which; I have to look it up every time to make sure I have it right. But here goes (with a book open on my desk):

Compose means to create or put together: the U.S. is composed of 50 states. The trick here is that you can say "composed of" with the "of" on it; however, you canNOT say "comprised of"; that one's wrong. Comprise means to contain or to inlcude all of something: the U.S. comprises 50 states. (It would be grammatically wrong to say "The U.S. is comprised of 50 states.") So it is always active voice followed by a direct object, whereas "composed" can be used in either active or passive voice. He composed a letter; the book is composed of letters.

There. Whew.

In my own writing, I do everything to avoid using either one, since I get tired of looking it up all the time. (I have a pet peeve attached, though: I cringe when somebody uses "include" and then gives a list of *all* the items included. The word include should only be used for partial lists.)

dr, it is true that no F1 driver's been killed behind the wheel since that terrible spring weekend at Imola in '94 when both Roland Razenberger and the great Ayrton Senna were killed in seperate accidents. (Oh, Ayrton -- almost 14 years... has it really been that long?)

I'm not sure how much Stewart had to do with the subsequent changes made in the name of safety at that point in time, but he certainly did during the 60s and 70s when so many of his contemporaries died on the track. He pushed for all kinds of safety measures then that are still used today in all forms of racing and even in passenger cars, and certainly all of us who have ever raced cars owe him a debt of gratitude. I know I sure do.

I've had a terrible memory as long as I can remember, and it's getting a bit worse. The worst has always been short-term memory even since my 20s -- standing in front of the open fridge, trying to remember what I came to get because I made no effort to burn it in before starting the task, assuming it's so obvious I would remember even though often that's not true. I assumed the getting worse was related to being older (nearly 64) rather than the statins I've been taking for about 8-10 yrs. BTW, I suspect there may be an advantage from remembering how to think about things without the details (called wisdom?), so you have to start fresh, while OTOH the details may save time.

Completely off-topic: the IvansClan had an unexpected evening at home, so we watched Julie Taymor's film "Across the Universe". Wow. The Boy was not as affected, but Ivansdad and I found it emotionally wrenching, though ultimately not a sad ending. It is among the best evocations of the Sixties I've seen or heard. Taymor has the gift of a real artist: she takes familiar songs (in this case, the whole spectrum of the Beatles), uses some of them well in an expected way, and gives some of them an entirely new meaning. I laughed, I cried, I cried again, I explained the details of the Sixties (draft, drugs, war protests, bombs, Vietnam) to the Boy. I highly recommend it.

Comprise is easy to remember if you know that it comes from French comprendre, which means include. Nya-nya. (Why "more unique" is wrong: unique
is French for "only" as in "the only one".) Not that a word has to mean the same as its ancestor, of course... but a year or two of the source language in school may be enough to make a contrary usage grate on your ear.

Mudge, I *know* you love Steinman's compositions and arrangements for M. Loaf's "Bat out of Hell." Personally, I'm not a fan - I don't mind over-the-top bombastic 70's pop/rock, but that only works for me if it doesn't take itself too seriously. This, of course, explains why I still like Queen, ELO, Led Zeppelin and others. I always get the feeling that someone in the studio or production booth was laughing out loud or at least smirking with amusment at the pompousness of it all.

I guess I'm a product of my time in saying that Springsteen's "Born to Run" is probably my favorite roll-down-the-windows-and-belt-it-out-from-beginning-to-end album, but I'd put Dire Straits' "Making Movies," a close second. On kit for a moment. When I first saw the story earlier today, I remembered a photo of daughter #2 holding some sort of large bat when she did a semester abroad in Australia years ago. She thought he was cute. I find bats very creepy. Of course she and her fiance are in Costa Rica right now, clearing the land that they bought. I was concerned about the poisonous snakes there, but she has emailed that they are more worried about all the bees. She's been stung quite a few times and is now afraid of them. Bats and snakes are fine, bees are scary?

Clinton Campaign Stop Summary

I: Stiff, tired, stiff, hungry, stiff, a little hoarse, stiff--after standing on my feet for four hours and 15 minutes, which included two hours in line outside the building. Long story short--the basketball arena was way too small--I have no idea how many people were turned away. Did I mention stiff?

Losses: one snagged (brand new Christmas gift that I hadn't worn yet) brown silk sweater when a guy with velcro on his jacket brushed by me. One confiscated container of pepper spray that was on my keyring and purchased for the trip to Connecticut and never used. One confiscated Swiss Army pocket knife that had been a gift from my husband. I talked to a security gurad when I was leaving hoping to retrieve these two items and he informed me that hundreds of pocket knives had been confiscated by security tonight.

The book that I was carrying was the last object dangled (and I do mean dangled) in front of Hillary that Hillary *DIDN'T* sign. I had moved to a lofty perch from my spot in the mosh pit before Hillary complete exited the arena.

Gains: I had a terrifc time with the people I stood in line with. Perhaps I'll have time to tell you tomorrow the story of George Bush and two Democratic Scottish terriers named Paris and Freddy.

Weird: The involvement and statements made by the local Archbishop, he of Opus Dei renown, today about Hillary's stop here. We in line were not immune from it.

Clinton held a rally at St. Mary's University, the oldest Catholic college in the city, on Wednesday evening.

"I was neither advised nor consulted by the university before the decision was made to have Senator Clinton speak at the university," Gomez said in the statement released by the Archdiocese of San Antonio.

Gomez said he was not trying to tell people how to vote, but he noted that U.S. Catholic bishops have affirmed a statement calling on Catholics not to honor or give platforms to political candidates and officeholders "who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles."

The school issued a statement saying it does not endorse political candidates and acknowledges fundamental differences between the teachings of the church and the positions of political candidates. [You should hear what the students are telling the local press.]

The school is an independent liberal arts college with its own president and board of directors but is under the spiritual leadership of the archdiocese.

Clinton spokeswoman Adrienne Elrod said in a statement that the campaign respects the archbishop's point of view and appreciates the invitation to speak at the school.

bc, i think you asked about barry bonds. if bonds was doping, it was wrong. but then it would be another sports figure caught in the headlights. when african americans were trying to get into many of these sports, it was hard and they weren't exactly welcomed, after getting in, i suspect it had its moments, but it just seems all sports figures have forgotten the game, but want to be "gods" now. yet the money is probably the thing that changed sports. that corporate influence. why is it corporations make everything ugly that they touch? and even in this, corporations don't have exclusive rights, we have to remember the folks that share in that greed, the lovely stockholders.

oh well. still some good people in the world.

Sorry to hear about your water heater, Cassandra, what a pain it is to be without hot water.

Mr. T has reservations at a steak place for dinner. He thinks in terms of food. I bought myself a red rose with babies breath at the grocery store yesterday because I liked it and it wasn't too expensive. He would never think of anything like that.

He is rightfully in apology mode. I had had a hunk of pound cake in the freezer, left over from my retirement party over a year ago. I was chopping off a chunk once in a while to enjoy; Sunday I gave some to him. Yesterday, I went to get a piece and it was all gone. Yep, he had eaten all of it and failed to tell me. I was not a happy camper.

He did bring home fresh chocolate-covered strawberries, but I'm still annoyed.

Interesting bat link, apparently one of the rare bat fossils was located at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), a museum my husband took the kids to for his birthday yesterday. His tradition is to take the kids on an adventure as his gift to himself.

Younger daughter was thrilled with the bat display and went through several times.

We are traveling today, so I indoor grilled some steaks and killed off a leftover bottle of wine last night as a pre-Valentine's dinner. My wife took the day off and slept late so I left a stuffed penguin (it's an inside joke), card, and dark chocolate rose. We'll see if and when she notices.

In my defense: I was trying to helpful and wiki steered me wrong-that was a direct copy/paste-not my words at all. I also never use compose or comprise, not because of the difficulty in remembering which is which, but because it never occurs to me to do so.

On the other hand, I have to books at hand and they both use them interchangeably: 'Bryson's Dictionary of Troublesome Words' and 'The Elephants of Style'. However they both agree with Mudge that 'comprised of' is always wrong. It's either 'composed of' or 'comprised' w/o the 'of'

For some, they should mark September 27 on their calendars as "Marry Your Baby Daddy Day."

Pundits that are supposed to be liberal, like Matthews and Dowd, get a lot of flak when they say anything negative about a Democratic candidate. The left wants more cheerleaders like the stable that Faux News has rounded up for the right. Keith Olberman fits in that mode and is the teacher's pet over at Media Matters.

Both Matthews and Dowd do have a deep, deep dislike for the Clintons. Since both are Irish Catholic from working class backgrounds there must be something in the culture. Perhaps it's a dislike of the raw naked ambition. Maybe its the disregard for moral convention from the Monica affair. It could just be hostility at the overall demeanor of the two. Either way, neither are getting any Valentine's Day cards from Billary.

Now that we all have numbered addresses and the streets are named, thanks to 911 calling system requirements, we've bounded into the late 20th century. Closer to real time than we've ever been.

Yikes. Kurtz's column this morning quotes pundit/reporter Matt Cooper. Catch the two massic grammatical abominations as they come by:

chris matthews is a serious diabetic, taking four needles a day! the illness may have something to do with the way he acts. i lived across the street from an elderly lady that had diabetes, and one morning i found her in the middle of the street just turning around in circles. i went out and asked her what was wrong, she told she couldn't find the sugar for her coffee. her granddaughter stole the sugar, so she said. i made coffee with sugar. i did not know what else to do. did not know very much about diabetes then. when i left her, she seemed pretty calm.

of course, chris matthews may have his disease under control. sometimes it is hard to do that, even with the insulin and the diet.

just curious, why so many needles? anyone?

I would note that Maryland did a bang-up job on I-270 as well, where that expected ice storm iced up the overpasses between I 370 and Rt. 118. I saw something on the order of 20 cars that had spun off of the road in that area, some of them collecting other cars in the process. Can only imagine how much damage was caused, much less human injuries. We all knew this was coming and when, why weren't the salt trucks out to meet the storm? I saw them idling on the sides of the road on the way in to work, before the precipitation was expected... not the greatest management, I think.

Happy Valentine's Day, everybody!

It's a double holiday here in cubicleland because one of the other people who shares the larger office (my next-cube-neighbor) is celebrating her birthday. So we're all decorated and there's lots of food. I made the office's traditional "chicken dip" -- this is an exotic concoction that people say they never heard of before they worked here. The recipe has been passed down, the originator has moved on to another job. The ingredients are: (1) canned chicken (2) cream cheese and (3) grated onion. Must be eaten with Club Crackers, nothing else will do. It's very tasty. I have never seen anybody try it and not like it. The food table includes Entenmans pastries, chocolate donuts, and an assortment of gourmet cookies, but all morning people have been coming into the room, looking over the food and exclaiming, "Chicken dip!!"

I gave my sweetie a card and Ghirardelli chocolate this morning, then when he went for his walk, I ate some of the chocolate. Sharing is good.

I don't know why four shots, Cassandra, except that I do know that insulin acts pretty fast and is gone from the system in no time at all; it doesn't linger. So I'm guessing he needs one at each meal and one at bedtime.

Be that as it may, his diabetes and shots would have nothing to do with his general hyper behavior. He's been that way his whole life, and long before the diabetes.

You did right with your neighbor, giving her coffee with sugar (anything with sugar)--sounds like she was having an episode. When diabetics are off their meds too long, they often act like they are drunk--woozy and slurred speech, etc.

When I was an EMT, lo a generation ago, Cassandra, we were taught about diabetic shock and diabetic coma. Diabetic shock occurs when glucose levels fall too low, and diabetic shock when they are too high. In both cases, EMT's were taught to give sugar, because it would help with shock and wouldn't hurt with coma. (I don't remember how you are supposed to get sugar in a person in a coma.) Both conditions cause altered states of consciousness. It sounds like you did the right thing.

(I hope prehospital care for diabetics has evolved since then. Surely paramedics can now give glucose when it's indicated.)

Traveling around the country on our G Family Road Trips, I love to see the names folks have given their little previously nameless roads, driveways and lanes. Some of them are as straightforward as Smith Road, but others might be as silly as Hopping Mad Rd. or King of the Woods Lane.

If I had the time, the money and the ambition, I'd love to travel across the country and write about the origins of those names.

I was nearly killed by a driver that had gone into a diabetic coma and crossed the median of A1A. When he finally got run off the road, he had no memory of the incident and had to be taken away by an ambulance for treatment. Not keeping up with the insulin is worse than drinking a fifth of whiskey before getting behind the wheel.

Elk in a bottle, oh my, DoC. If I recall my 4-H stuff rightly, canned meat should be spiced, cooked, and prepped:

The freezer is a wonderful boon for storing raw meat.

The other time-honored technique is sausage. I recall the poorest of families canning venison chili, and pooling bits and pieces with other families to send to the mysterious sausage man in Choteau. Sausages came back and were hung in garages. So, I guess they were smoked also.

Sometime in the 40s or so -- wartime -- the jerky tradition because rare, limited to ranches and cowpokes.

One of Hawaii's culinary delights is Spam. I'd never seen it so widely avaialable in so many forms before moving there. Frostdottir still loves Spam musubi, rice and a slice of Spam wrapped in seaweed. I like it cold and cubed on a skewer with cheese, Mr. F's favorites are grilled with pineapple or as a Spamburger.

Cassandra, 2-4 needles a day for type 1 diabetic is about par for the course. My sister takes three or four, depending on her level of activity that day, quantity of food ingested and the result displayed on the glucometer. Jack discussed about his mother-in-law difficult dosage adjustment. The quantity per shot and frequency of shots will vary from person to person, the general idea being to minimize the amount of time the person spends with an elevated sugar level. This is high sugar level that is causing the cumulative damage of diabetes, it is very important to spend the least amount of time in high zone, especially for a young person that has decades ahead of him/her. The low sugar zone is where you die quickly... Difficult cases such as persons needing more than 4-6 a day shots (or person who can't or won't remember to inject the regular shot) are given an insulin pump. The pump gives a small shot at regular intervals through a "permanent" opening through the skin (usually in the abdomen). A niece of mine has had one of those since she was about 18, she's now in her mid-twenties. She would simply not shoot herself more than 4 times a day.

kb-nonfood dips are the best. My fave-two cans Hormel chili (no beans), 1 jar jalapeno Cheez Whiz, 1 can french fried onions. Heat chili, add Cheeze Whiz, stir to mix once Whiz is melty, add french fried onions and mix. Serve with tortilla chips.

mudge, shrieking, slyness, and all, thanks for the information. a lot of my friends have diabetes. my dad has the pre condition, but he is in denial so bad, it may be full blown diabetes now. I don't know, he keeps this kind of information from me. I don't think he wants to take any medications for the condition. I keep a check of my own glucose levels, and so far, so good, but with my eating habits, that may not last long.

so many of my friends have diabetes(type 2), and many have complications from the disease. the complications are horrific. some have lost their legs or others have heart problem, even to going blind. it really has impacted the african-american community pretty hard. and it's not just the person that has diabetes, but the whole family is impacted. there are children with pre-diabetes because of obesity. it really is a nightmare. I desperately tried to get help in the form of a grant to address the problem, but was not successful. the diet is the thing. that's the killer for many of us.

Movies with subtitles work in part because the audience is likely to pick up some of the courtesy words, repetitive things like "spam", and gestures. After six hours of watching the Italian "Best of Youth", I felt halfway ready to visit Turin. Ciao.

I learned someething amusing last weekend. On the DVD we have of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, there is a scene (the first time they go to the French castle) that has been dubbed in Japanese, and then the translation of the Japanese back into English appears in subtitles.

Only, what we didn't know until #1 told us, is that the actual Japanese they speak is quite faithful to the original English, while the subtitles are very very wrong.

For instance, after the barnyard animals have been heaved over battlements, the original English has Arthur yelling "Run away!" The Japanese dubbing says "Run away!" but the English subtitles say "Find a place of safety!"

Therefore, funny on at least three levels, but only somebody who actually speaks Japanese would know that. Excellent!

Happy Birthday to those others out there that were born today. I can now qualify for Social Security, FWIW. My favorite name out in Columbia was a cul-de-sac named Blue Pool. Urban legend among planners was that back when Rouse was laying out the new town, they suddenly realized that they had only one day left to get street names submitted to the County offices for one section, or the County would name them instead. So they ran around the offices and took any person's last name that hadn't already used and slapped them on the plats.

OTOH, Mudge, now you know the Japanese character for Spam. Did you see the guy peel the banana using only his, um, gluteal cleft. If not-

Diabetes runs in my family, Cassandra, that's one reason I try to keep tabs on my eating habits and blood sugar numbers. One of my uncles lost his right foot to gangrene from diabetes, and it was devastating, emotionally more than physically, because it meant he couldn't drive.

We had a street up the road from us growing up, in an area that was woods when we first moved there, named for a boy who used to live in the house at the dead end (when it was still woods--before they extended the road).

He had long since moved away, but had left his name scrawled on a board tacked to a tree that somehow was left standing when they tore down the woods*. The state assumed the builder had put it there and named the street.

So, I had to order a new printer from HP because my other one won't connect with the new computer (and a cable converter doesn't fit, either) -- HP promised to take my old printer and even pay me $$$ for it. Fair enough. I get the printer yesterday and tried to set it up. It's not enough that the setup software won't work (permanent error about a .dll library). Nooooooooooo.

You see, fellow sweet, wonderful boodlers -- HP failed to enclose a USB cable because (wait for it) THAT'S EXTRA! The sales representative, of course, failed to tell me that when I made the order last week.

I coulda gone down to my local Staples or Office Depot and gotten a printer the same day. And since I bought the old printer at Staples, maybe I coulda struck a deal with them for it.

HP has some cr @ ppy business model, dontcha think?

TBG I think you and I grew up in similar type areas, there were many developments that were built in our neighbourhood as I grew up, but one plot of land was a holdout. A forested edges overlooking the water - the one with the hills I have written about before. When the plots were eventually sold (about 10 in total) there were strict requirements about how many trees could be removed. The result - large homes overlooking the water, that did not appear new due to the mature trees. Some of the driveways were even designed around the trees.

Around here, TBG, it was the other way around. Many subdivisions were built on what had been farmland, so there were no trees of any size in what had been fields. I remember driving down the street I now live on when I was in high school, and being put off because the trees weren't half grown. Now, of course, they are mature, as my neighborhood is the same age as the one I grew up in, when I was growing up.

I feel for you ftb. I myself have vowed to never buy from HP again. Of course now that I'm Mac, I'll probably never buy a PC again either.

In terms of local developments, Sherwood Forest held great appeal for my children. I think they would have loved living in a Tolkien development.

About a year ago my power went out while surfing the web. This created a bad sector on HP hard drive. I tried scan disk. I tried reformatting the drive. I tried using an old copy off DOS ^ and that version of scan disk. One last try of formatting and reinstalling Windows. Nothing I tried would kick that bad sector truly marked unusable. Every fresh install would attempt to write part of the OS to that sector causing my pc to constantly act quirkier than usual, often rendering it inoperable without a reboot, and sometimes that wouldn't even work (it would just doing nothing) and would have to turn off and on

I recently had light bulb burn out and that flipped the circuit breaker. I was watching a DVD on my Mac. When I turned the Mac on the loading system progress bar would move way too fast and would never complete. Then everything would go blue. I tried Scandisk. I tried reinstall. I was at wits end, when a light bulb went of. Safe load. This found two problem files, fixed them, and I was back in business. Like jack says: "JOY!"

OMB, to many SCCs to count in that first para. How appropriate though, since it is a paragraph about HP PC (hehe).

OK, here's a story I don't understand. The U.S. wants to shoot down one of its own spy satellites that's orbit is decaying and will soon fall to earth in March. The supposed danger is that it still has lots of its fuel, hydrazine, aboard. So far, so good.

But why is this a problem? When it falls out of orbit, it is going to burn up coming down through the atmosphere; at some point, all that hydrazine is going to ignite, blow the thing up, and fall to earth in tiny bits that ought to burn up even easier. Instead, we want to destroy it in orbit, where the hydrazine will still ignote, and the debris field will remain in orbit, causing a much larger problem.
