Franchot goes after Schaefer

Del. Peter Franchot (D-Montgomery) turned more aggressive today in his bid for comptroller, purchasing an ad in the Baltimore Afro-American newspaper that attacks the incumbent for alleged racial insensitivity.

The ad features a large picture of Comptroller William Donald Schaefer (D) with a quizzical look on his face and asks: "Does this man deserve four more years as Comptroller?"

The ad goes on to assert that Schaefer, a former governor and Baltimore mayor, "has demonstrated insensitivity, intimidation and abuse towards Maryland's minority communities."

Among the examples are comments Schaefer made last year regarding the renaming of the Baltimore-Washington International Airport to include the name of former Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall.

The Board of Public Works, a three-member panel of which Schaefer sits, was required to sign off on the change. During public comments, Schaefer said: "This is wrong, and it shouldn't be done." He wound up abstaining from the vote.

"It's really kind of sad that Peter's running this kind of campaign," Schaefer spokesman Laslo Boyd said today.
Boyd said Schaefer is running for re-election based on his record as comptroller, and "this ad isn't focused on the real issues affecting the job of comptroller."

Anne Arundel Executive Janet S. Owens is also challenging Schaefer, 84, for the Democratic nomination.

Schaefer is a terrible comptroller. Everyone focuses on his offensive comments, but even if those are ignored he does not do a good job. The pension system is not managed well and gets awful investment returns. He makes terrible votes on the board of public works. Even if he never said an offensive thing he would need to go.

He can't do the job anymore. Let him start collecting his pension, and let's get someone in there who will do the job.

AFSCME, why aren't you out front to get rid of this guy? He is squandering your pension investments.

No Mr. Boyd, it is sad that Schaefer abstained from signing off on the plan to add Thurgood Marshall's name to BWI airport.

Glad that someone is highlighting just how bad Schaefer is.

I support Schaefer and am grateful for the years of dedicated service he gave to our State. I hear and read lots of complaints but so far nothing even remotely criminal or unethical. The same cannot be said for most of the sad sacks that are posing as our leaders or office hopefuls. Maryland is stained by the Abramoff influence and his slimy associates and will remain that way until we get our fraudulent voting system cleaned up.

Let's not set the bar so low. Schaefer isn't a criminal, therefore we should re-elect him? How about this: he can't do the job.

Maybe some find it refreshing to have a politician who is a crank and who doesn't care what voters think. It isn't refreshing to have a comptroller who can't succeed at the core functions of his job, and whose choices don't reflect the electorate.

Can't succeed at the core functions of his job? Like what?

The pension system is nearly fully-funded, as opposed to those of most states.

In his role as fiscal watchdog of the State, Maryland just received (again) a triple-A bond rating from all three rating agencies--one of only six states to do so.

Nearly all taxpayers who file their returns electronically get refunds within 48 hours. Compare that to the IRS.

By any measure, Comptroller Schaefer is carrying out his duties admirably. That is one area where reasonable people cannot disagree.

His votes on the Board of Public Works? Well, since about 98% of the votes are unanimous, that hardly seems grounds for complaint either.

It is clear that both Franchot and Schaefer are acting like children, always attacking someone or demeaning themselves and others. The only candidate running a positive campaign stressing experience and accomplishment is Janet Owens, Anne Arundel County's executive - she has my vote.

Franchot is clearly misrepresenting his views from his flip-flop on slots - a staunch supporter prior to 2003 now "a moral opponent". And Schaefer has demonstrated that he is no longer fully in control of himself.
Janet Owens is only qualified candidate.

I have to agree with the above poster, Janet Owens is rising about the petty political squabbles of her opponents.

I agree with those above. Janet Owens is the only qualified candidate for Comptroller. She has the experience to truly lead this great state toward further success. Her campaign is positive and reflects her as a candidate. Franchot has no experience, is a flip-flopper, and runs a negative campaign. Schaefer has had a great run, but with age, is now over. We owe it to ourselves as Maryland residents to vote for Janet Owens this septemeber for Comptroller!!

Schaefer keeps his eye on the bottom line. Franchowens can't handle this important job.

Franchot should not have to apologize for having the courage to come out against Schaefer publicly. Owens is just cowering in the background, not really doing much, and thus not giving herself much of a chance to win.

We need to throw our support behind Franchot and unite if we want to have any chance to finally retire Schaefer.
