Wynn-Edwards Race Gets Hot--Now With Video

The U.S. Senate race was the headliner at last night's political forum sponsored by the Prince George's chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

But it turned out that the big show (see video) came before and after that somewhat tepid discussion.

The police were called to the Prince George's County Community College before the Senate debate began, when a member of Rep. Albert R. Wynn's team allegedly hit a volunteer for Donna Edwards' campaign. Edwards, who is challenging Wynn in the Democratic primary for his seat in the 4th Congressional district, said her campaign worker was bleeding with a gash on his forehead.

The gloves really came off when Edwards and Wynn took the stage.

Edwards, who is considered the first credible challenger to face the seven-term incumbent in the District that includes parts of Prince George's and Montgomery counties, pounded Wynn on his votes to authorize the use of force in Iraq, to repeal the estate tax and to reform bankruptcy laws.

"As long as he chooses to vote lock step with the Republicans we will not have health care," Edwards said in response to whether she supports affordable health care system.

Edwards' supporters, a sizable crowd, cheered.

Even Gus Alzona, a Republican candidate who shared the stage with Wynn and Edwards, couldn't resist commenting.

"That's a tough act to follow," said Alzona, who is running for the 8th Congressional district. "I'm glad she's not my opponent."

I was accosted by Wynn's volunteers 2 weeks ago while trying to distribute Edwards lit. Same thugs as last night's forum. This isn't new for Wynn.
Ask him who Streetdog is...

Clearly Al Wynn is out of control Aparantly this employee is totally out of control...and apparantly the person detained by the police works in his Largo office as a federal employee for Al Wynn.

His defense of this behavior in the Gazette today saying his person "got the best" of the situation.

By the way, does Mr. Wynn have a campaign office or is he just campaining out of his federal office, using his employees as thugs...and by the way this is a democracy...are government employees really supposed to be beating up supporters of other candidates? Mr. Wynn should be accountable for this behavior.

Perhaps he should resign rather than continue to campaign through intimidation and fear.

Big Al needs to go. It's time for a Democrat to hold that seat.

Posted by: Marylander | August 17, 2006 4:14 PM

How can we hold Wynn accountable? He's a very slippery fellow with muscle behind him. The more open the controversies are the better! Will the press report these happennings? With tonight's debate happening in Gaithersburg and not PG County it will be interesting to see if there is any difference in Wynn's conduct.

I would love to have the opportunity to vote against him.

It is inexcusable how poorly he represents his district by his votes.

Go Donna Edwards!

This whole story sounds like it's straight out of "The Wire."

Wynn and Cardin are walking ads for term limits. Both have posted a lot of illegal signs in right-of-ways and vacant lots. None on homes.

Posted by: term limits fan | August 17, 2006 9:15 PM

Wynn voted in favor of Dick Cheney's failed energy policy. He caved in to the powerful corporate lobbyists and voted in favor of the GOP bankruptcy measure. He sided with Bush's rich friends rather than his own constituents when he voted to slash taxes for the wealthiest Americans. He favors the development of casinos and gambling in his district. He sold out to the corporate telecoms and voted against internet freedom. And the list goes on and on....

It's time to elect a real leader who's not beholden to the special interests. A leader like Donna Edwards!

BTW - I've posted additional comments on this incident, including a pic of Wynn's supporter being detained by police, on my own site.

While the election season circus goes on in MD, clear your minds of the rhetoric and remember this.

Republicans fight terrorists. Democrats only fight one-another.

...I've yet to hear what plan the Democrats have for ANYTHING. Their empty offer of being an alternative for Bush haters is only a dead end.

Watch any of the hour long documentaries on 9/11 that are hitting the airwaves right now (only 5 years later). If these images don't resonate in your minds as clearly as Pearl Harbor STILL DOES in the minds of your parents, none of you deserve to call yourselves Americans.

Posted by: BG from PG | August 17, 2006 10:07 PM

Unlike BG, I think that everyone who is an American deserves the right to call themselves that. No matter what their political beliefs are, or whether they choose to cower fearfully like BG and his conservative cronies, saying "oh please don't let the terrorists get me, yes of course I'll surrender all my freedoms and what America stands for, just keep me safe."

But BG does have an excellent point about not hearing enough about Democratic plans. No doubt BG recognizes the cause as well: the media's failure to report on Democratic initiatives like Real Security, Six for '06, or making American energy independent. BG, I'd urge you to go to democrats.org to help acquaint you with the plans the media won't really discuss.

Incredible. Have I been transported to Soviet Russia of the 1920's? Are there truly people out there complaining that Al Wynn isn't far enough to the left? I've got to move to Oklahoma.

Posted by: Brandon | August 17, 2006 11:45 PM

This is nuts...or I mean, it seems like just Wynn is.

Never liked him anyways because of the Bankruptcy Bill he supported. But this makes me wanna learn more about him...and so far tonight, from reading and surfing the internet to learn more on this guy, my impression of him only continues to sink. The only way to stand up to Republicans in Congress is to have Democrats willing to do so in there as well. Wynn seems out of touch and a tad narcissistic.

"As long as he chooses to vote lock step with the Republicans we will not have health care..."

What unmitigated idiocy. Send this leftist back in time so she can enjoy life in the USSR instead of her trying to bring it back for us to enjoy.

Posted by: Rufus | August 18, 2006 7:56 AM

Why is it that Al Wynn publicly claims that he doesn't face any competition from the Edwards camp, yet his folks are tearing down Edwards signs as fast as they go up. He's desperate to marginalize his opponent and cast the spotlight away from his voting and fundraising record.

Let's not forget, he voted to keep Terri Schaivo hooked-up to a machine. He likes his voters vegetative too.

Posted by: Mark Anderson | August 18, 2006 11:31 AM

"Let's not forget, he voted to keep Terri Schaivo hooked-up to a machine."

Terri Schiavo was not hooked-up to a machine, she was hydrated and fed though a feeding tube.

Why do you have to lie to present your point? Maybe because your point is disconnected from the truth to start with.

Posted by: Rufus | August 18, 2006 1:31 PM

Why doesn't someone ask Wynn why Michael Steele goes to all his fundraisers! The last one being the Crabfest 2 weeks ago at PGCC...where they were wearing Steele Tshirts and handing out literature. And not a whimper from the big man himself. If you believe Wynn is a democrat, then I have some real estate I'd like to show you...get real folks, Al Wynn is as DINO as you can get...

Posted by: gatsby46@comcast.net | August 18, 2006 4:05 PM

Let us hope that the Washington Post will continue to bird dog Al Wynn and shine the light on his thuggish tactics.

Posted by: A Donna fan | August 18, 2006 5:40 PM

I've never liked Al Wynn for what may seem a quixotic reason. A number of years ago I attended an event put on by a charity; Wynn was there too. At the end of the event they asked everyone present to help put away the folding chairs so a few people wouldn't get stuck with the task. Wynn just stood there, watching a crowd of mostly senior citizens fold and stack the chairs. Didn't lift a finger to help. Boo.

GOP=THUGS

Any questions?

Didn't think so.

Fact, not opinion.

Posted by: nikto | August 18, 2006 7:29 PM

Not all GOP-rightwingers are lying, Satan-worshipping, racist,
America-destroying SCUM.

Only 99.7% of them are.

The rest are OK.

No relativism here--This is Absolute Truth.

...and Democrats are lying political oppurtunists that play on the hopes of the less fortunate but really have no solutions to offer them in the end.

That's the real truth, so who's more evil in that sense?

Posted by: blue state/bad state | August 19, 2006 11:47 AM

Haha someone is so stupid to post that this proves GOP=THUGS when this was a Democrat vs a Democrat....wow there are some truly moronic people in this world of ours.

Posted by: Bryan | August 19, 2006 3:00 PM

"...and Democrats are lying political oppurtunists that play on the hopes of the less fortunate but really have no solutions to offer them in the end."

Oh, they have solutions. The problem is they invariably end up doing more harm than good. Socialist healthcare, the minimum wage, affirmative action, gun control, welfare etc, etc are all easy to sell to the ignorant or idealistic as panaceas. If only they were as good at solving the problems they were intended to solve as they were at bringing in votes for Democrats.

Posted by: Brandon | August 19, 2006 10:47 PM

Let's get back on topic - Al Wynn votes the way the Guns & Oil Party says. Time for a true-blue Democrat: Donna Edwards.

Let's ignore the neo-con baiters on this blog and work for progress in Prince George's County.

If we are going to get Wynn, let's finish the job and remove Exe. Johnson. The next time he spend 3 million on his friend, it will not be tax dollars!

I am not a resident of Maryland, much less Prince George's county, but I enjoy politics. But.. Why are our people so ignorant? When it's all said and done, nobody is going to remember the campaigns, the signs, the debates or any of the good stuff. Folks are going to remember the fist fighting of where to place signs.

Prince George County Residents, please do let that foolishness be the standard as to how you are viewed by the nation. Standup and disown that silliness and prove to the nation that you are the most powerful group of people of color in the world !!!

Actually, Gus Alzona was the ONLY Republican candidate running for Congress to even show up at the NAACP Forum that night. As a person of color running in the now more heavily minority district 8, Alzona is probably the only Republican electable there nowadays. The Washington Post failed to mention Alzona's comment that, if elected, he would not be a "waterboy" for the Bush/Cheney administration!

Posted by: Simo | August 25, 2006 10:38 PM

SIMO is GUS ALZONA

Dont you love when politicians speak about themselves in third person. I dont think that with the anti gun violence mindset of the district, they'll be electing this nut anytime soon. I suggest Chris Van Hollen.

Let us all be practical here. First off, when the GOP plays the race card, its like the easter bunny carrying a bazooka. Its just unlikely and plain silly.

Let's not forget that STEELE did not show up at this forum either.

Posted by: DC Kos | August 29, 2006 5:26 PM

DC Kos, what has being a "waterboy" got to do with "playing the race card". I don't think athletic teams discriminate regarding race when it comes to who carries the water for them.

Nowadays, any Republican showing up at an NAACP forum speaks rather highly of them, IMHO. I found Gus Alzona to be an honorable person and quite knowledgeble about the issues.

Posted by: Donna Edwards fan | August 30, 2006 12:16 AM

It does not surprise me that a crook supports a crook. Wynn will WIN (you like that). There will be no shakeup this year. Losers support losers

This years winners:
John Cardin, Hoyer, Wynn, Van Hollen

The reason Donna will lose because she supports gun fanatics who have caused all the gang violence in Prince Georges. Donna is a republican in democrat clothing. I suggest Al Wynn.

Posted by: Wynn Fan | August 30, 2006 4:04 PM

Wynn is a bad man. His staff beat up and old timer at the debate at the college.

Posted by: Donna Rocks | August 30, 2006 11:18 PM

Gus Alzona is truly a "compassionate conservative." He was the only Republican congressional candidate at that NAACP forum and is the only one who can beat Van Hollen this fall. He is also the only candidate on the ballot that has a handicapped accessible website. Check it out at www.alzona.com

Posted by: MoCo Republican | September 6, 2006 2:28 PM

please. so alonzo will show up at the us house in his camos and his flak jacket and protest the speaker and break down house decorom.

the only thing alonzo is compassionate about is causing trouble. Vote Van Hollen.

Posted by: Van Hollen Guy | September 7, 2006 1:11 AM

Compassionate conservative!

lets try this

Jumbo Shrimp
Moderate Liberal
Social Conservative

Posted by: libby | September 7, 2006 1:50 PM

So, Ms. "Van Hollen Guy", I guess you mean that Alzona may not be getting the redneck "Bubba" or GOP yuppie vote after all. I guess the racists in the Republican Party have quite a dilemma in this Sept. 12th Maryland Primary. Their only viable choices this time are a Christian immigrant (Alzona), a Jew (Stein) and a Muslim (Zubairi). Tsk, tsk, tsk, what are the closet racists (in both parties) to do now other than bash all three of them?

Posted by: Independent voter | September 8, 2006 8:56 AM

Just like a professional victim to cry racist.

Last time I checked, religion was not a race. Im guessing Stein and Zubairi are white

Posted by: DependentVoter | September 8, 2006 10:24 PM

Oh, I get it now, Mr. Depends voter. So, the racists will have to split their vote between the two Caucasians Stein (an Aryan?) and Zubairi, of Pakistani descent. So, who will the anti-semites vote for? Who will the anti-Muslims vote for? Who will the "they hate us because we are free" crowd vote for? Is being a bigot a hate crime?

Who ever believes that "race don't matter" crap must be smokin' some serious weed.

/sarcasm off
