The Cabinet Was Bare

As Cabinet meetings go, the 8 a.m. gathering yesterday was a little short on Cabinet members.

The 21-member group included the seven secretaries Gov. Martin O'Malley has nominated so far and a hodge-podge of other interim department heads. Most of Ehrlich's secretaries submitted their resignations before noon Wednesday, when O'Malley was sworn in.

Some of those present at yesterday's meeting were lower-ranking department officials under Ehrlich, while others were O'Malley loyalists likely to hold the posts only temporarily.

Clarence Bishop, O'Malley's former chief of staff at Baltimore City Hall, represented the Department of Business and Economic Development, while Sean Malone, a former O'Malley labor commissioner in Baltimore, was acting as secretary of the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

The Ehrlich Cabinet secretaries still on board included Agriculture Secretary Lewis Riley, Maryland State Police superintendent Tim Hutchins and Veterans Affairs Secretary George Owings III.
