License Restored for Prince George's Station

The Maryland State Police last week restored the license of an automotive inspection station in Prince George's County that was revoked four years ago after authorities had said that it was issuing certificates for safety inspections that it did not perform.
The reinstatement occurred as Sen. Nathaniel Exum (D-Prince George's) , who had been lobbying for the restored license, was holding up the Senate confirmation of Col. Terrence Sheridan to lead the state police agency. The Senate confirmed Sheridan this morning on a 42-1 vote, with Exum the only senator opposed. During debate on the floor this morning, Exum questioned whether Sheridan was sufficiently committed to diversity in the workforce, while several senators from Baltimore County said he was a man of high character.
Here is the full story by John Wagner and Rosalind S. Helderman on the license restoration.

Dear PG'er,
You forgot several outrages about situation of Prince George's County: people (like you) who have not only given up on the county's government, but continue to bad-mouth it in an indiscriminate manner. There are ongoing and sad themes among those you list, of which many are marks of government in various places and levels. But govt. has evolved and, in some ways gotten better, in PG govt. (compare the old white boy tobacco-run politics inherited by Executive Glendening with developer-driven culture under Curry with today's case of ineptness but basic good intentions under Johnson). Perhaps the self-interest remains, and the players change. But at least now the populist pol (Johnson) gives people what they want (regrettably, high end retail not preservation of the land, etc.) But it's what residents want...
The County Council, the planners, and some agencies are more responsive and responsible than ever before. Over past 6 years there have been numerous good laws to promote quality of life. I am not an employee or apologist for PG government. I am an environmental and civic activist, who often fights for public good. And even I have to admit that things have gotten perceptibly better. I have not given up on PG County...

This is politics as opposed to corruption of a criminal nature. It is, however, corruption of the struggle to end discrimination, which is far worse. Exum, under the guise of looking out for minorities in the MSP, was really looking out for a corrupt business that was responsible for putting unsafe vehicles on the State's roads. How could Mr. Exum ever credibly lead opposition to an alleged discriminatory practice without his true motives being questioned. Sadly, he probably doesn't care.

I'll bet you $100 his daughter is the next County Executive. Term-limited off the County Council, Camille's next car will have PG-1 license plates.

wallow (verb) - to flounder about; move along or proceed clumsily or with difficulty
This is the goal of the federal government - to let Prince George's County simply fester in its own corruption. Suppress the people by allowing this political cesspool.
The biggest single obstacle to ending corruption in our county is the neglect of Maryland's federal prosecutors. Neglect is not the right word because it may mean this is accidental. It is not - it is deliberate malfeasance. The Bush Administration has turned the Justice Department into a political enforcement agency.
However, our local officials have subverted our county and us for some time now and not one single indictment! Slush funds from National Harbor, credit card fraud, official favors for friends, jobs for unqualified friends/contributors, first-class overseas flights, liquor license shenanigans, employment by the people you regulate, big-money political slate accounts, voter intimidation. I am sure I have forgotten more scandals than I can count.
How is it the Feds can relentlessly hunt down Mayor Barry and Democratic Governors Siegelman and Spitzer, yet the clowns of Prince George's continue to poison our institutions, profit from their own excesses and produce no results for the voters?
Let's hope we get a democratic president, because it will reinvigorate our justice department.
