Public Safety Endorsements in Pr. Geo. District 5
Edmonston Mayor Adam Ortiz has picked up more union support for his campaign for Prince George's vacant County Council seat. This week, the local Fraternal Order of Police, the local professional firefighters organization, the Deputy Sheriff's Association, the National Capital Area Park Police and AFSCME, which represents other government employmees, backed his campaign, Ortiz said.
The firefighters are being vocal (and visual) with their support, printing up huge signs that say "Firefighters for Ortiz." Ortiz said he believed the unions were impressed with his efforts to help residents whose homes were repeatedly flooded in the small low-lying town of Edmonston, as well as his support for the police force there.
"This is a huge boost," Ortiz said. "We're still the underdog candidate, but we know we have working people on our side."
While Ortiz has much union support, some of his opponents are also receiving important endorsements. Andrea Harrison, a former Harrington staffer, has been endorsed by her old boss, as well as by Sen. Nathaniel Exum (D-Prince George's). Several current council members, including Camille Exum (D-Seat Pleasant), Ingrid Turner (D-Bowie) and Thomas E. Dernoga (D-Laurel), attended a recent fundraiser for her.
Adrion Howell, a consultant and former staffer for Executive Jack B. Johnson (D), has picked up support from Del. Victor R. Ramirez (D-Prince George's), Del. Jolene Ivey (D-Prince George's), the leadership of the Maryland Black Mayors Association, county Realtors and former U.S. Rep Kweisi Mfume.
The teachers association previously endorsed longtime community activist and middle school teacher Theresa Dudley.
The vacancy came about with Harrington's elevation to the state senate, following the January death of Sen. Gwendolyn T. Britt. The candidates are competing in an April 1 Democratic primary. A General Election will follow on May 6.

The only way to get a union endorsement is to promise them pay raises regardless of how much money is coming into the county treasury.

The person that posted the same thing 3 times must be one of the old cronies of the crooks in office. Ortiz has a great track record and actually believes in public safety not holding office for his personal bank account's benefit. The campaign will get nasty I just hope that the folks in District 5 VOTE FOR CHANGE, INTEGRITY and HONESTY!!!
