Few Voting in Prince George's District 5

Looks like there's low, low turnout in the special election for the vacant District 5 seat on the Prince George's County Council. As of midday, Prince George's Elections Administrator Alisha L. Alexander said 2 percent of the district approximately 46,000 registered voters had visited the polls for the primary election.

That translated to 906 Democrats choosing between seven candidates who are vying for the party's nomination and 25 lonely Republicans who have so far come out to support candidate Steven W. Johnson. The winner of the Democratic nomination will face Johnson in a May 6 general election in the heavily Democratic district. The winner will replace former council member David C. Harrington (D), who was elevated in February to the state senate.

Candidates for the Democratic nomination are middle school teacher Theresa Mitchell Dudley, former Harrington aide Andrea Harrison, consultant and former aide to the county executive Adrion J. Howell, Realtor Melvin B. Johnson, security company president Derrick A. Parks, Edmonston Mayor Adam Ortiz, public health nurse Sherry Strother.

Alexander said turn-out could rise as voters visit the polls after work. "That's what we're hoping," she said.

Check back later for results.

Less than 8 % (about 3300) of the 40,000+ registered voters went to the polls today.
Incredibly sad to see how little people care.
The nine members of the council have tremendous influence on our quality of life, with their authority in (multi-billion $) budget, zoning, and law. Who cares?

Thanks for posting the results, "Results found." Much appreciated.

Not even 10 percent. Wow. I was a part of the 8 percent who voted.

So when there's another brain dead proposal before the county, or stupid zoning laws that neither make sense (like putting storage places but not actual stores and restaurants near homes), nor use our resources wisely I don't want to hear any complaints.

The Washington Post ran a great big editorial endorsing Ortiz the Sunday before the election, before they wrote anything in Metro about the race, which they did the day before election and with no photos. The paper's efforts to dictate the result in the race failed. The fact that they ran no photos makes me suspect that the paper felt there may have been a racial aspect to the contest.
