Low Turnout in MoCo Special Election

Ann Marimow

Turnout has so far been sparse in eastern Montgomery County's special election for the District 4 seat of the late Council member Marilyn Praisner.

Most of the polling places in District 4 are schools, which are open today, and that may have discouraged an early morning rush, said Board of Elections' spokeswoman Marjorie Rohrer.

But one polling place that always attracts some action is Leisure World - the large, politically active retirement community. County Executive Isiah Leggett (D) made an appearance there today on behalf of Praisner's widow, Don, one of the Democrats seeking her seat.

School board president Nancy Navarro (Northeastern County) said she too was headed there today.

The other Democratic candidates are school civic activist Steve Kanstoroom and federal government consultant Patrick E. "Pat" Ryan.

On the Republican side, the candidates are marketing analyst Mark D. Fennel, IT developer Thomas Hardman, real estate agent and IT businessman John McKinnis and athletic fields specialist Robert P. Patton.

There were two polling places at Leisure World today--ClubHouse I and ClubHouse II. People at both places wanted property tax relief.

It is no surprise that the turnout is so light, after the _Post_ practically boycotted coverage.

So VERY glad that the Dem voters of District 4 had the good sense to reject Nancy Navarro. She got just what she deserved for her miserable performance on the BOE and for ignoring her constituents for four years. She blew us off so many times and now she knows what it feels like. She still has two years left on the BOE and hopefully her politics of division (not possibilities) won't gain any more traction than it already has. Way to go voters of District 4!!!

Oh, and way to go MCEA. Your leaders (Gerson and Cullison) have developed quite a skill for picking losers.

Well, it's now pretty much official that the people of District 4 want more of what we elected Marilyn Praisner for - representation on the Council that knows and advocates for those of us who call the District home and send our kids to school here. The politics of sprilaing tax inceases, union influence, and inexperience have been rightly rejected by the people.

Godspeed Don Praisner!

Congratulations and good luck Mark Fennel!

Hopefully the voters in district 4 will realize that it is not in their interest to have the one-party rule in this county continue. The county council has no fiscal restraint right now and no need to seriously consider alternative views. If you don't want to be taxed out of your own home then vote for REAL change on May 13.

This council is a complete joke. Every proposal seeks to close the budget by taking money out of the pocket of residents who are already feeling the effects of increases in state taxes, energy, gas, food. Pretty soon no one will be able to afford to live here.

"...Praisner's widow, Don."

I thought the term was "widower," for a man?

Agree, most Dems stayed home due to the low profile by the Post. I expect the general election will have a better turnout.
