O'Malley Welcomes Hearing On "Waste Of Police Resources"

John Wagner

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) said today that he welcomes legislative hearings on state police surveillance of peace activists and death penalty opponents that took place under his Republican predecessor.

"I think they want to ask the same questions that all of us have," O'Malley told reporters. "At best, it was a waste of police resources."

The governor fielded questions about the hearing following an event in Baltimore County at which he signed an executive order establishing a Maryland Drug and Alcohol Council.

Sen. Brian E. Frosh (D-Montgomery), chairman of the Judicial Proceedings Committee, said yesterday that his panel will question police officials about why they perceived the activists as public-safety threats, when their organizing activities were nonviolent.

At least two intelligence agents infiltrated the activists' meetings and rallies over 14 months in 2005 and 2006, while Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. (R) was governor, according to documents released to the American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland last week.

I saw the article in the Post and didn't it say that the infiltrations took place without the knowledge of Gov. Ehrlich?

Isn't this a waste of legislative resources?

O'Malley just wants the facts made clear. He has nothing to hide, but I doubt any of it will stick to Erlich. Erlich's a friend of Bush and I'm sure just as slippery. The GOP dirty tricks manual is on its third edition since Nixon first published it.

We need a legislative hearing on the waste of Maryland's financial resources that brought on the biggest tax increase in history from Governor O'Malley.

This hearing is partly just THAT - if you accept that this "waste of police resources" contributed to recent tax increases. Beyond that, any further hearings on tax increases, should focus on future waste (which can still be averted) especially the $3,100,000,000 ICC toll road.
