Presidential Campaign Web Spending

Now that the presidential candidates' first-quarter reports are on the Web, let's look at how much the top fundraisers spent on their Web operations.

Far and away the biggest Web spender is former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who has paid out at least $618,298 on "Web services" for his campaign. Romney is the top Republican fundraiser. Much of his Internet spending on gone to consulting firm Molecular.

The two leading Democratic fundraisers, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., also spent heavily on their Web sites, according to reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.

Obama spent $196,694 on Web-related services, including $72,232 on Google AdWords to help people find the Illinois senator's campaign site (Republican Mike Huckabee appears to be the only other candidates who spent money on Google AdWords). Clinton's campaign lists $193,570 in expenditures labeled "Website," nearly all of which went to the Mayfield Strategy Group.
