Democrats on Democrats
President Bush is far from the sole object of Americans' disapproval. In the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll, the approval rating of the U.S. Congress has dipped to 28 percent, below President Bush's current, career-low, mark of 33. And neither party's members of Congress fare much better. Just 32 percent approve of the job Republicans in Congress are doing and 36 percent approve of how the majority Democrats are handling their jobs.
Back in April, about 100 days after Democrats took control of the legislative body, the new leadership enjoyed a 54 percent approval rating, buoyed by broad support from their liberal base.
Seven months later, with several failing legislative battles on the war in Iraq and other issues crucial to liberal voters, support from the base has sharply declined.
Among liberal Democrats, approval of Congress overall has fallen 37 percentage points since April, from 59 percent to 22 percent. Their approval of Democrats in Congress has tumbled by nearly 30 percentage points - from 85 percent to 58 percent - since the 100-day mark.
Older Democrats may be more likely to show up at the polls next November, and they are less satsified with their party's performance than are younger Democrats. Democrats in both age groups gave congressional Democrats a 78 percent approval rating in April. Now, among those under age 45, it stands at 62 percent and has fallen to 48 percent among the older cohort.
Approval ratings from other key Democratic demographics have become more lukewarm as well: Among Democratic unmarried women, approval has dropped 29 points, and among African American Democrats it has fallen 13. Among white Democrats, approval has gone from 78 percent to 53 percent.
As of now, the decline in approval has not translated into a desire for change: More than nine in 10 in each of these groups say they want the Democrats to remain in control of Congress after next year's election.
Q: Do you approve or disapprove of the way the Democrats in Congress are doing their job?
Percent saying "approve;" All results among Democrats

I agree with Claudine - this entry shouldn't be filed under "Behind the Numbers," since it doesn't provide any analysis "behind" those numbers. The reason the Democratically controlled Congress has dropping approval ratings is because Republican obstructionism has twarted their ability to meaningfully change Bush's (and by extension, the previous GOP Congress') direction in Iraq. Several other polls have parsed their numbers and shown this.
Presenting these data as simply evidence that Democrats don't like the Democratic Congress is lazy, and borders on dishonest. Let's take a look at what people think of the Republicans in Congress.

It should be pointed out that the voters
are totally dissatified with Congress and
that means both the Democrats and the
Republicans in it as well. And that is why
these out of touch with reality Democrat
so-called Leaders Speaker Nancy Pelosi,
Steny Hoyer,Crazy Harry Reid, Dream Act
Durbin,Chuck the Smuck,Goofy Rahm Emmanuel
and the rest are badly mistaken,if they think that the voters are going to fall for
the Democrats we arenot Bush or Cheney lies
since the Democrats cut their own political
throats by taking Impeachment off the Table,by Failure to cut off the Funds for
the War in Iraq,by endless attempts to pass
massively opposed illegal alien amnesty,
failure to indict or charge a single Bush
stooge and constant caving in to Bush and
the Republicans on every important issue,
so 2008 is going to be 2006 in reverse for
the miserable failure Democrats as they wlll get their butts kicked for it in 2008.

This is so sad. It really demonstrates how poorly our government is running the country. Neither the President nor Congress can get the job done. Yet beyond these statistics, the general population can't fulfil their duty either. We as a people are supposed to elect the representatives who will best serve the nation, and so far, that hasn't happened. At this point, we as a country need to settle our differences, and pull ourselves out of the hole we are presently in.

Barack Obama on 'Meet the Press' with Tim Russert , today claims that: more importantly, it's not just a matter of winning, it's about can you create a new working majority for change. With that in mind,
Who do you believe among the Democratic Nominees can create a New Working Majority to transform the political landscape?

While everyone seems to want to put their favorite result out there and support or oppose their man/woman, they probably miss the point that the polls themselves miss.
You can't get much of a correct answer if you insist on asking the wrong question.
By and large, the only voters who actually matter are the Guilliani voters, unless He ends up the candidate. If he ends up the candidate, the only voters who matter, and they may not matter very much, are the rabid evangelical right.
Rudy's consistent lead among Republicans probably comes from his being the only moderate still able to mount a campaign in the Republican Party. If he had only two conservative opponents, he would actually be a close third in the race. Unless he can win outright on the first ballot at the Republican national Convention, he WILL lose a brokered convention. The question will be just how conservative the brokers turn out to be. And the question at that point is how many disappointed moderates then bolt the party for Hillary (or whoever else gets the nod). Even now, by pandering to the right as much as he is, Rudy cuts his own throat among centrists who really don't much like him anyway, but would like to have a classical Roosevelt Progressive for a candidate for the first time since Teddy. When he doesn't make the cut, where will his supporters go? If he DOES get the nomination, since he isn't that much of a front runner over all, where will the Truly Faithful Moral majority go? If THEY bolt, Rudy is avalanche fodder any way you parse it.
The polls ought to ask first, who is your man? If it is Guilliani, then ask who is your alternative when it isn't him. If it is any other Republican, then who will you vote for if he is nominated? Pay close attention to the none of the aboves, because they will be part of the margin of victory in many non presidential contests.
By the way, the non blue West and the South cannot by themselves elect a President. If you can't win electoral votes north of the Potomac and the Ohio, including Missouri, Iowa, or Minnesota,or something on the Pacific not counting Alaska, you don't come close to 270 electoral votes. The Dems don't have to have a Southern strategy, or much of a Western strategy to prevail.

I suspect that the average voter, and the average poll answerer, have little idea what the Congress has actually done since January 2007.
Too many press and too many bloggers interpret low approval ratings of the Congress as being indicators that all incumbents will be thrown out; Democrats as well as Republicans. That's just not going to happen.
Congress has had low approval ratings many times before and usually the vast number of incumbent Representatives were re-elected. I'd be surprised if it's any different this time.
After the past 15 years, people who identify themselves as Democrats are not likely to vote for a Republican just because "their" Democrat has not voted exactly as they would have voted.
Core Democrats will remain just that. The question is, what will Indenpendents do?
But actually, because Independents have been co-conspirators in re-electing so many incumbents over the years, I expect that next year will be no different. If 2008 is a "sea change" election, the tide will go against the perceived party in power, which right now is the Republican Party.
Bottom line: Democrats will be hurt by low Congressional approval ratings, only if the 2008 election is an exception to the norm.

When are the democrats going to start talking about the national need for a review of, and attention to, ethics in public service?
Rudy's COOKED with yesterday's revelation of his connection to the Manhattan Ethics Scandal. And if the democrats don't take the lead, EVERY New York candidate just might go down in flames. See:

My disdain for Hellary has nothing to do with her supposedly being a woman! I love women and would vote for one for president readily. But, let's not vote for Klinton just because of gender: think back to that administration, all of the spies, lies, corruption, deaths, smears, immorality, backstabbing, laws broken, drugs, bribes, Chinese spies, payoffs, character assinations, assasinations, investigations, using dead people, theft, obfescations, stealing china, destruction of public property, threats to bimbos, assaults, rape accusations, sex not sex, asprin factory murders, tyrant coddling, Whtewatering, Rose law firming, missing files, DNA disapearance, Foster bodies, Lies in diaries, lawyers commiting suicide, hidden agendas, payoffs, Luewinskiing, coverups, mismanagements, bodies in the parks, bodies in the cell, bodies in the water, nuclear secrets being sold, FBI files stolen, blackmailings, ..... all with Hellary right smack dab in the middle either orchestrating or covering up!
Use your memories people!
Other than that I have nothing against her.

The polls keep asking the wrong question. The question of whether you approve of either party in congress is broad. Progressive Democrats and independants are upset that the democrats and moderates in congress cant unify against the unpopular stranglehold the republicans have had on the house for years.
The republicans are playing a game in which they wish to drag the democrats into the mud with them. The polls need to ask specific questions such as "Do you wish congress to investigate the Iraq War?" "Do you wish congress to address health care?" "Do you wish congress to force President Bush to end the Iraq war?"

Oh come on these polls are virtually totally worthless as they do not provide a
direct comparision between the Democrat
Voters and Republican Voters responses to
these very same questions and thus let the
readers decide the truth here, instead of
what some Washington Post Reporter tries
to brainwash into thinking...And it does
not take into proper consideration the huge overwhelming mood for major changes
by the voters, on issues ranging from getting the US troops out of Iraq,Ending
Illegal Immigration and Securing our borders and Impeachment of Bush and Cheney
and our failing economy as well.
