Most Want Troop Draw-Down

Six in 10 Americans, a new high, want to decrease the number of U.S. forces in Iraq, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll out this morning.

Majorities have wanted to decrease troop levels since late 2005, but this is the first time 60 percent have advocated a draw-down. At the same time, there continues to be only minimal support for a full, immediate withdrawal.

Only 17 percent in the new poll want to pull all U.S. forces out of Iraq right away. The percentage calling for a complete, immediate withdrawal has not topped 20 percent in any Post-ABC poll.

More than eight in 10 Democrats and nearly six in 10 independents want at least some troops pulled out of Iraq, but far fewer would like all forces out now. Twenty-six percent of Democrats and 14 percent of independents want a full draw-down.

By contrast, a majority of Republicans want to maintain (44 percent) or increase (17 percent) the number of U.S. troops in Iraq.

Q: Do you think the number of U.S. military forces in Iraq should be (increased), (decreased), or kept about the
same? IF DECREASED: Should all U.S. forces in Iraq be withdrawn immediately, or should they be decreased, but not all withdrawn immediately?

I think it is clear that Americans want an end to this useless war (useless to people other than war profiteers). Congress can't stop Bush now, but after the next election, when another wave of Dems are back in and the Cons can't fillibuster everything, everything will change. Just don't forget to vote.

Republicans have for a longtime held the country hostage with a statement that troops could be in danger if Democrats cut funding. Things today may be turning a corner, where the majority of people are getting over this statement and viewing funding as a continuation of the war rather than a safety issue for troop.

With that in mind do you believe congress will be successful with the strategy that put forward by Nancy Pelosi, to attach withdrawal of troops to war funding?
