The Impact of Wright
Public polling has revealed several potentially troubling trends for Barack Obama's campaign over the last few days, from the evaporation of his lead over Hillary Clinton in Gallup's daily tracking poll to a resurgent Clinton outperforming Obama against John McCain in the Associated Press-Ipsos poll, but perhaps none more so than what Newsweek's poll found among the Senator's own partisans.
The poll found the starkest evidence yet that Sen. Barack Obama's run for the presidency has been negatively impacted by the controversy surrounding his outspoken former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who in recent days made his first public appearances since news of his fiery sermons broke last month.
More than three in 10 Democrats reported feeling less favorable towards Obama as a result of what they had heard about Wright, double the percentage who said so in a CBS News poll in March.
And the Newsweek poll found Wright is not the only drag on Obama's popularity among Democrats. Three in 10 view Obama less favorably as a result of his own comments about "bitter" small town residents clinging to guns and religion, and nearly a quarter report being turned off by Obama's answers to questions about why he chooses not to wear an American flag lapel-pin.
On the plus side for the Illinois senator, 41 percent of Democrats said they felt more favorable as a result of the speech Obama gave on race in America in the wake of the uproar over Rev. Wright's sermons.
A Washington Post-ABC News poll from earlier in the month showed Democratic reaction to Wright to be more muted. Three-quarters of Democrats said Obama had done enough or more than enough to distance himself from his former pastor's comments, and just 15 percent were "very concerned" about how Republicans might use Wright's remarks against Obama in a general election campaign.
Now, after a Pennsylvania loss that highlighted Obama's difficulties making inroads into Clinton's white working-class base, the combined impact of these controversies appears to be building up quickly: The Newsweek poll showed the double-digit lead Obama held over Clinton a week ago had been reduced to seven points.

Reading these comments, as well as those elsewhere, it's interesting to see that what used to be known as "the Left" has basically come out on the side of defending Wright's comments. These people are doing this not just to support Obama, but because they truly believe America is a force for evil in the world. (While nobody would disagree that we screw things up sometimes, this is an extreme position).
The problem for Obama is that these people are the core of his support, along with the African-American community. How can Obama throw half his "core constituency" under the bus?
The ultra-liberal/Leftists were never more than 15% of our population and one-third of Democrats. Together with African-Americans (who should get a total pass for supporting Obama-how could they not feel pride in his candidacy?) they amount to 30%. This is why Obama can't close the deal with a significant majority of Democrats, and why he wins caucuses, where activists show up, but not primaries, which more-average voters decide.
But once you throw the NON-Democrats back into the mix in the general election, there is no statistical chance that Obama can win the majority of the voters (and from an Electoral College standpoint he looks even worse). So what is this whole candidacy about?

This is a very sad day for America if there really are so many people who put trivial concerns--wearing a flag pin! Unbelievable--in the center of their voting for a presidential candidate.
The other questions about his retired pastor who has nothing to do with the campaign and who has told some truths people do not like to hear--the United States is NOT an innocnet player in the world, but the major military force that often uses that force counter-productively, as in Iraq and we are an object of hatred in many countries.
We americans love to be loved and cannot understand why others do not like our use of torture, imprisonment without trial, or preemptive war without a threat against us. Grow up USA. Obama is the adult candidate who is prepared to face difficult questions and situations and represents our own best hope for the future. If we throw away this chance cause of lapel pins, or over-sensitivity to "bitter" truth, then we deserve no better than we will get.

Jack Smith, at least you aren't posting your "you must be an idiot" speech. Thank you.
I'm an old white woman who supports Obama because he is the only candidate who attempts to rise above all the bull and raise the dialogue up, rather than continue in the same old "Trash and burn" politics. He ain't perfect, but he's a breath of fresh air in these days of negativity and demagogery. Sure, we aren't pleased with Rev. Wright and many of words and way of thinking.....but we need to attempt to understand from whence they come and why. I am hopeful this election will ultimately rise above nasty politics, ads and rhetoric. The time has come to elect someone who wants American to be its best!

Typically inane "commentary", let's see, he's down because of Wright, but he's up because of his speech on race, which he did because of Wright - seems like a wash; a "double-digit lead" is down to single digits. HEY, HE'S STILL AHEAD!!! And that's despite all of the negativity associated with the last few weeks - why not point THAT out? The fact that Obama's ahead, despite Wright; despite the "bitter" misrepresentations; despite the loss in PA; that's what's significant about these numbers.
The fact that polls have been swinging wildly throughout the campaign, affected by almost every little thing, and recovering just as quickly, is never mentioned. This is yet another heavy breathing, meaningless (because it's a point in time - come back after the Indiana/NC primaries and let's see where we are) waste of phosphor. It almost comes across as an attempt to create a wave rather than discuss anything worthwhile. Then again, that pretty much sums up most of the articles arouhd here lately (justifying their paycheck rather than producing anything newsworthy).

Who is this blogger?
In response to the statement that, "after a Pennsylvania loss that highlighted Obama's difficulties making inroads into Clinton's white working-class base, the combined impact of these controversies appears to be building up quickly", it is astonishing that "reporters" so often don't seem to do their homework.
From Robert Creamer, at HuffPost:
"Clinton's own super-high negatives among independent voters -- including those in rural areas -- present her with a more difficult task than Obama in many rural states in the fall. Take Iowa, where the RealClearPolitics.com average of polls shows Obama up on McCain by 9.3% and McCain leading Clinton by 10%."
Even where white rural men express their preference for Clinton in a Democratic primary, it doesn't mean they would vote for McCain in the general election if Obama is the nominee. Democratic primary voters almost always vote for the general election candidate of their party, and for good reason. They are Democrats because they understand that McCain's economic and foreign policies don't represent their best interests.
The real question is not primary voters -- it is how independent voters (people who don't vote in primaries) of all sorts would vote in the fall. Obama has shown that he is much more attractive to that all-important category of voter than Hillary Clinton.
The renewed media attention to the views of Obama's Pastor Rev. Wright may briefly distract attention from the real Obama. Of course the silver lining of Rev. Wright's three day PR tour is that it was conducted with such utter disregard for the interests of Obama's campaign that it serves to emphasize the great gulf between Obama and Wright - both in substance and in style.
And as voters come to know Obama, they realize that he has a huge quantity of the one quality that is just the opposite of elitism: empathy.

Birds of a feather flock together. Just like the extreme right hijacked Bush's presidency, the extreme left has take ownership of Obama. Have fun guys! I'm a Bush-hater who will probably vote for a more moderate McCain.

Bush won two election and ran great campaign.... He must be a great president :-)
Similarity between Bush and Obama, and their rhetoric is scary.
1. Both are Uniter
2. Both born again Christian
3. Both incompetent through out their life (Obama has better degree's)
4. Both take money through the back door
5. Both scares the hell out of media if they say anything negative about them
6. Both had no achievement record until mid forties. Some People become very "DECEPTIVE" by that age
7. Both enriched themselves through "VAPOR" action like writing a book selling a polygamist, deadbeat father as great human being or selling the idea of baseball stadium through backhanded deal with Arlington, TX city council
8. Both get tired and feel the need to work "hard" according to Obama. It seems Obama physically gets tired very quickly like Bush
9. Bush panders to 33% extremist on the right, Obama panders to extremist on the left
Obama and his nuts are scary

Um, Seed of Change,
What would you know about his nuts?
Is there a scandal there?
Posted by: InYerMouth | April 29, 2008 12:38 PM
I support Hillary Clinton, but I can't see the problem with this whole Jeremiah Wright thing.
He's Obama's Pastor, not his Vice President. I mean, is he any more of a nut than Falwell or Roberts? I personally think Cheney is WAY more dangerous, in his position than Wright would be.
I hate to admit it, but it seems the media, and the racist (mostly Republican) electorate have latched onto the Wright Issue to explain away their Racism.
I support Hillary Clinton, because of her experience and ties in Washington. I believe she will be able to get things done with all her inside connections and with Bill's help, but Obama is a sharp, thoughtful guy, too, and I'm sure she and Bill will be there to help him if he's the nominee.
I just cannot agree with trying to force Obama out of the race because his Black Pastor (FORMER Pastor) wants to run his mouth while all the scared racists point as if he speaks for Obama.
It makes no sense. What does it have to do with the price of eggs?
The whole thing has played non-stop on Fox News for months, which is enough for me to smell a Rat.

The young generation are not perturbed and are not really influenced by the nonsensical questions: flag lapel, Wright rantings, foreign name, etc. The rest of the world are laughing at antics in American politics. America is supposed to be a free country so Wright can rant whatever without tainting Obama. Wright & Obama are 2 different people!

It is obvious that the powers that be are trying to railroad Obama's chance to be the Democratic nominee for president. I am amazed that people are so gullible that they fall for all the tactics used against him.
Who cares whether he wears a flag pin! Most people I know don't wear one. How can you hold comments from a FORMER pastor against Obama? I watched the interview with Rev. Wright on PBS and I agree that America DOES need to reflect on some of the things she has done to others and work to establish respect again, not just in the U.S. but everywhere we have caused pain and suffering to innocent people and their families. We wouldn't like it, would we?
My last comment is in reference to the interview on the John Stewart with Obama.
John asked Obama if it were his intention to "Enslave the White race" if he became president. This question, although meant to be quite humorous, is one I am sure scares the heck out of some people who still have ingrained in them, old prejudices.
Thank God the young people rise above all of this nonsense.!By the way, Obama laughed and said that wasn't in his plans! So, relax!

Helluva news conference. Obama settled that issue, once and for all. Finally. I have a lot of respect for what Wright accomplished in his life, but he sure ended up sounding like a loon.

Voters are finally getting to know the real Obama and they don't like what they are finding out about him. Questions about his asociations with Wright, Ayers and Rezko still remain; he has shown that he doesn't understand or appreciate working class Americans; he has repeatedly demonstrated his arrogance in responding to issues and his opponents; and, he has shown that he is very weak when it comes to confronting issues and problems. And lastly, he has shown that he is simply an ambitious politician that "talks good," while Americans want a President that will represent them, lead them and fight for them. Obama is not up to doing the job.

Obama may have faults but hilary has too much baggage she's no way going to be the nominatee if she wins I'm voting for McCain.
I once was a loyal democrate but that will change if that lying back bitting hyprocrite Hilary Clinton gets nominated.

Posted by: Sue F | April 29, 2008 5:37 PM
Why didn't Obama denounce or show outrage about Wright's comments a month ago when he was saying God XXXX America? Blaming the US Govt. for creating AIDS to get rid of blacks, etc.
It only bothers him NOW that he's losing ground in the polls? Or is that Wright called him what he really is, a POLITICIAN who will say what it takes to get elected?
Sorry Obama. Too little too late.

The fresh line coming out of MSNBC today is that over the last twenty years no one who attended Jeremiah Wrights services heard any thing like the comments as noted over the last several days.
It is a good thing that we have the video from pastor Wright diatribes else we would be taken in by the folks over at MSNBC.
Barack Obama sat there for twenty years and now we are to believe that he had no idea as to the truth about Wright? Who do I believe, Chris Matthews/Barack Obama or my lying cheating eyes and ears!
Posted by: Fred C Dobbs | April 29, 2008 5:48 PM
Liberals agreeing with Wright do NOT think that America is evil. How many times must this be said? How much of an ideologe do you have to be to not hear it? America created most of it's own recent problems: the sanctions in Iraq created the Sadarists, the anti-Soviet promotion of the Taliban, the unyeilding support for Isreal, and the 1950's era coup in Iran created Al Quaeda. Saying all this does not make liberals Anti- American! It makes us what you should be, if you're going to vote- A THINKING ADULT!
Please folks, READ HISTORY instead of just knee-jerking your way through politics. Kindergarten analysis is not useful.

Why is it that white are considered racist if it is inferred that they might not vote for Obama because he is black, but not considered racist for blacks to demonstrate that they will vote for Obama because he is black? It seems to me that if we are to ever remove ourselves from the evils of discrimination, we must concentrate on candidates that will be the best for our country, regardless of their race or gender and regardless of our race or gender.

Commenting on one's opinions that are obviously not yours? Who cares. I am truly saddened by the childish ranting that is propagated by this blog and, in turn, supported by the Post. Is this man's highest level of discourse? When education, intelligent reasoning and mankind's truly unique ability to dream a better future are so maligned and ridiculed by the general populace, are we not deserving to wallow in this ignorance? Give me a dreamer with an education and the drive to achieve any day - I choose to believe that I can accomplish something positive in my life. I believe in the infinite greatness of man.
And I gladly leave all of you here to wallow in your bitterness. Enjoy. I'm off to better uses of my time.

Posted by: richrib | April 30, 2008 2:42 AM
This is only the beginning. Bill Ayers has yet to come to the surface and there are new revelations every day in the Rezko Trial (Chicago Sun-Times follows this). What this all means is that if the superdelegates ignore these items and push Obama through out of fear (which I still think is possible due to the left wing of the party), then President McCain can pick his cabinet now. The Democrats continually make bad decisions like this because of the people at the top (Pelosi and Dean come to mind). They are from the far left and it shows. Only a moderate can win the White House (or the appearance thereof). Whatever Obama says about Wright now is immaterial. He sat in his church (donated $26,000.00 to it last year according to his taxes) for 20 years. Wright married Obama and his wife and baptized his children. It's too late. It may also be too late for Democrats who failed to investigate Obama before pushing him. Good news for Democrats. Hillary can come back in 4 years and really win it.

Do you feel HilLIARy Clinton is worthy for the nomination after proving herself to be a liar? Do you feel it is rather hypocritical of HilLIARy Clinton to question the length Barrack Obama served with his church while not knowing Jeremiah Wright's radical views when Bill and Monica had oval office meetings while HilLIARy was in the same house? Barack Obama rejected J. Wright, and Hillary leached onto Bill Clinton despite his numerous disrespectful actions against her and the American people. Bill Clinton's sins cost taxpayers millions.
Why do the American people seek to always kill the movement for real positive changes in this country???
FUNNY - How the American people forgot the many lies HilLIARy has told throughout this whole campaign
FUNNY - How the American people forgot how HilLIARy planted people in the audience to ask her specific
questions
FUNNY - How HilLIARy stole Obama's message and theme
FUNNY - How HilLIARy will cry, lie, cheat and steal to get this election (Typical Politician)
As a perfect example of HilLIARy's leadership, why hasn't HilLIARy Clinton spoke up in any manner concerning an innocent man being murdered by three police officers based on "I THOUGHT HE HAD A GUN" excuse?
IF she can't govern those in her own state of New York, WHY trust her to govern this nation?? To what extent does she care for the American people??

I'm amazed at how much medicated purple Kool-aid people will drink. The comments and opinions were snippets of words spoken by Rev. Wright, not Barack Obama. All of this is classic FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) mongering. These "Jedi mind tricks" should be seen as what they are, red herrings and utter crap. Let's get back to discussing the economy, health care, the insane war in Iraq, global warming, jobs, fostering small business development, etc. If we don't get back to the issues and away from USA lapel pins (likely made in China), we'll be paying $10 for a gallon of gas, $800/mo. in electric bills and paying for "another hundred years in Iraq" with more young lives. Don't be deceived. We're too smart for this nonsense......I hope.

Besides the many negative aspects of sen Obama arising from his recent bittergate remark and his Chicago connections including his paster Wright, Tony Rezko and Bill Ayers, the most important weakness of Obama is his inability to win the key battleground states OH, FL, PA in the primaries. Because of this, a highly sophiscated prediction analysis for November election by
www.electoral-vote.com (updated may 1) shows that Obama will lose to McCain, whereas sen. Clinton will be the winer of these key states as well as the general election.

No president in past were perfect and none will be in future unless it is Pope. All three candidates are human being that have friends with views that may bey be different. I am sure Hillary/Bill and McCain all have past associations and finanacial misconducts that have benifitted them finanacially. Obama,s strength is that he can get along with people ( hate the action and not the person). He has not associated with folks to get personel finanace. News media can not investigate Keeting Five that created Savings and Loan crisis ( hundereds of billion lost) and Macacin was part of that Keeting five. He benifits from his wife is income and finanacial dealing but that not reported and news media is silent. Where are 2007 tax returns from Hillary? Where are list of billions spend to enrich supporters. Why is seceracy. News media is not lookin at it. Iraq war has financially ruined our country, reduced security and laughing stock of world. Where is discussion in News Media? How many people have been hurt by Obama's associations? How much money he made from his associations. Where is that comparison with all candidates?
News media like sensations. That sells. We the people are being duped by the media. Did you notice that allthe news media folks make millions $$ and has nothing to do with middle ( fast going to poor class)?

Seantor Obama did this to himself.
He knew about this "Wright" relationship at the beginning of the election.
He knew his Reverend and his church's support of Louis Farrakhan when he entered the presidential race.
He is deceiving Americans, especially the youth.
The "pied piper" from Chicago. Attracting the children of the USA.
He is very misleading and talks around in circles.
Support Hillary or Democrats will lose.
Posted by: A Very Concerned American | May 4, 2008 6:53 AM
Why doesn't Obama just step aside for now?
He has too many negatives. Maybe he could win the primary, but there is no way that he could win the Presidential election. Obama really should support Hillary.
Hers' a list of items that he has to fight about with McCain:
1.)Reverend Wright: He still is attending Trinity United Church of Christ. Obama still has a lot more explaining to do. Obama compares him to an old uncle. Has anyone seen this man's videos on "you tube"? It is frightening.
2.)Louis Farrakhan:
Reverend Wright's church, Osama's church, supports Farrakhan. Farrakhan is against the Jewish people and very controversial, to say the least. He is frightening also.
3.)Obama has a Muslim father. Obama might say he is a Christian, but how do Indonesian Muslims think. Are there any radical Muslims anywhere that might just say to other radical leaders that Americans support Muslims? Muslims don't necessarily hear the news properly. That would be frightening.
5.)Elitist Attitude: McCain has already said that he thinks Obama's comments were Elitist. That is probably the worst trait for any candidate. This really means that Obama can not relate to the average American. McCain will attack him for not being like one of the "boys" over and over again.
6.)Obama's Racial Comments: McCain has addressed Obama's comments about being a "typical white person". Obama spoke about this topic over the radio and broght his "white grandmother" up during his famous race speech.
7.)Unpatriotic:
Obama thinks this isn't a big deal. Not a big deal? When McCain decides to ask him again why he doesn't wear an American flag pin it will be a big deal. What would be the harm if Obama would just wear one to satisfy Americans?
8.)William Ayers:
The terrorist that has bombed the pentagon: Obama was on a board "The Woods Foundation" with this man. Would anyone go to a board meeting with a man that doesn't feel one bit of remorse for bombing US buildings?
9.)Tony Rezko:
This man is on trial at the present time in Chicago. Obama first said he hardly knew him during a debate. Now Obama has revealed he bought land from him and took money from him for his campaign. Don't' think that this won't be brought up again and again. Obama knew this man for years.
10.)Barack Hussein Obama
Even his name will become an issue. Democrats will hear the Republicans blast his name everywhere.
It's not one issue. This is just a sampling of the many issues that Obama would have to address again and again.
Please, wake up America!
There is no way Obama can win this general election. Stop thinking he's the Democratic savior. He should really step aside and let Clinton win this race.
Please think with your brain and not with your heart. Unless you want McCain to win this election, stop supporting Obama and support Senator Clinton.
Senator Clinton and President Clinton husband are loved very much.
Not only in the US but throughout the world.
Senator Clinton will fight for all Americans, especially for the poor and for African Americans.
President Clinton has always fought for the poor and African Americans. His office is in Harlem. There is no way he should ever be called a "racist". It just shows how little the youth of America knows this man.
This in no way is to smear Senator Obama. I want a Democrat to win the White House.
Please, Wake up Democrats! Vote for the winner, Senator Clinton. Obama is just not ready.

HELP RECTIFY THE WRONGS THAT REV JEREMIAH WRIGHT DID TO BARACK OBAMA. A RECENT NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLE OUTLINES THE PETTY CAUSE OF THE CONTROVERSY.
OBAMA HAD SECOND THOUGHTS ABOUT REV. WRIGHT DOING THE INVOCATION WHEN HE HAD HIS INAUGURATION OF CAMPAIGN CEREMONY ON THE STEPS OF THE ILLINOIS CAPITOL IN JANUARY 2007.THE REASON WAS REV. WRIGHT'S VERY CONTROVERSAL SERMONS. HE HAS TRIED TO REMAIN LOYAL TO HIS PASTOR. HENCE THE SILENCE. THIS SHOWS WHAT A BBBIG PERSON BARACK OBAMA IS. HE IS ALSO BRILLIANT, GRADUATING MAGNA CUM LAUDA FROM HARVARD UNIVERSITY LAW SCHOOL. HE HAS CONDUCTED A WELL ORGANIZED CAMPAIGN,EMPHASIZING THE THEME: YES WE CAN COME TOGETHER!!!! HE HAS SHOWN THAT HE IS A GGGREAT AND HONORABLE PERSON. HE HAS SHOWN WISDOM AND DISCERNMENT. HIS FEW MISTAKES HAVE BEEN MAGNIFIED BY SMALL MINDED PEOPLE. HIS GAFFES HAVE BEEN REMARKABLY FEW. HE HAS MADE REMARKABLY FEW MISSTATEMENTS.HIS JUDGEMENT IS ALMOST PERFECT. REV. WRIGHT HAS ALMOST DESTROYED HIM AND MICHELLE.
NOW IT IS TIME. IT IS TIME TO STOP THIS FIDDLEFADDLE AND GET TO WORK. HE GENERATES TRUST WHENEVER HE RISES TO SPEAK. IN ONE AND HALF YEARS HE HAS DEVELOPED INTO A TREMENDOUS ORATOR WITH EXTRAORDINARY GRASP OF MEANING AND THRUST OF IDEAS. HE GENERATES TRUST.
I ASK YOU:
PLEASE GET BEHIND BARACK AND MICHELLE OBAMA
PLEASE CALL AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE IN THE NEXT 48 HOURS.
LETS WAKE THE IMPORTANT PEOPLE OF INDIANA AND NORTH CAROLINA.
PLEASE:
CONSTRUCT A REAL FRAMEWORK AROUND THIS GEAT MAN!

i think that no matter what obama`s former pastor said or will say , he is only jst a pile of faulthy ads , he is just having very hallucinations about having contacts with such dectatorship countries like Iran , he is simply hallucinating. Hilary is at least thruetful and clear about her foreighn policy. she`s not perfect , but at least she fits the to be the cheif.
I Believe in HILARY CLINTON.

Okay, the Wright's effect went wrong from what the polls expected showing not much change in the overall vote. Who cared about such mediocre conjured up distraction, voters still voted for Obama. They apparently had a made up mind, as do myself. The Wright effect had the wrong effect at the polls, but the right effect to win Obama the election.

How dare we hold Barack Obama to a higher standard than we are to John McCaine? John McCaine asked John Hagee to endorse him. I would also like to know how people who sat under pastors associated with KKK could sit under them most of their lives. I would also like to know how many voting "White" Catholics left the Catholic Church after the Priest's scandals. But you can hold Obama accountable for Rev. Wright. I think that everyone is protesting to much.
