The Better Halves

As Americans wade through the glut of information about the presumptive presidential nominees of each party, they also get to know the candidates' better halves. A new Washington Post-ABC News poll shows both Cindy McCain and Michelle Obama hold net positive favorable ratings, but many have yet to form opinions on either potential first lady.

About half view Obama favorably, including 42 percent of men, 54 percent of women and 66 percent of Democrats. Republicans (30 percent favorable) and independents (44 percent) are less positive, Republicans due to much higher negative perceptions (50 percent unfavorable) and independents because of a larger bloc of undecideds (28 percent). About a quarter of all adults have no opinion.

Obama could be the nation's first black first lady, and nearly nine in 10 African American women view her positively. About half of white women, a far less Democratic group, share a positive outlook. Like her husband, Obama appeals to younger women (64 percent favorable among those under age 45) more than their elders (44 percent among women age 65 and over), but enjoys mostly positive reviews from both married and single women. About half of those who backed Clinton in the primaries have a positive view. Self-described feminists are also in Obama's corner: 60 percent have a favorable view of her.

Fewer Americans express an opinion about Cindy McCain, who, with the GOP nomination battle wrapped up in early March, spent less time on the primary campaign trail than Michelle Obama did. More than a third have not yet formed an opinion of McCain, but nearly four in 10 express a positive view. Republicans (62 percent favorable) are far more likely than Democrats (29 percent) or independents (35 percent) to say they have a favorable opinion of McCain, and as with Michelle Obama, for different reasons. Democrats are more apt to view McCain negatively (37 percent unfavorable) while four in 10 independents have no opinion on her.

There's less of a gender gap in sizing up McCain, 37 percent of men and 40 percent of women see her favorably. But unlike Michelle Obama, she is more positively viewed among married women (44 percent favorable), than single women (35 percent favorable). Just 25 percent of black women view McCain positively, 44 percent of white women do.

Support for a candidate, however, does not necessarily translate into support for his wife. Just 56 percent of John McCain's supporters have a favorable view of Cindy McCain, while about three-quarters of Barack Obama backers have a positive take on his wife.

Looking at assessments of husband and wife together, 44 percent of adults have a favorable view of both Obamas, 21 percent take the negative view on both. For the McCains, 31 percent see both husband and wife in a positive light, 18 percent view both negatively.

A Pew Research Center poll released yesterday also finds more people familiar with Michelle Obama than with Cindy McCain, but goes one step further to explore the tenor of news coverage about the two women. About half of those who have heard at least something about each say the coverage has been a mix of positive and negative, but reports about Obama are more likely to be seen as negative than those about McCain.

Among those who have heard news coverage on Obama, about a quarter say it has been mostly negative. Slightly fewer, 21 percent, said they've seen mostly positive coverage of the Illinois senator's wife. Coverage of Cindy McCain, by contrast, is perceived as being far more positive. Just 7 percent said most of what they have seen about her has been negative and 31 percent report it's been mostly favorable.

People want "change". This is already proven. To have "beer heiress", as the first lady, is no change at all.

It´s a pity that Hillary Clinton does not count any longer. She has the best half, no doubt. Even if you put the two other halfes together they will be worse.

Come on women, let's have some solidarity here! I think that both wives are exemplary and (like all potential first ladies) fall into the category of extremely, repeat extremely, good sports. Picture your own marriage and imagine putting up with what these ladies have over quite a number of years. I thought Barbara Richardson, Bill Richardson's wife, had the best quote during the primary about who takes care of the house, the car, the family, and the homefront while "Mr. Wonderful" is out there appearing on TV. I loved that expression Mr. Wonderful and wish we had gotten to see more of her!

For a more rounded view of Michelle Obama, you should really read Obama's books. The treatment of Michelle is very romantic and very respectful. Regarding past first ladies, she reminds me most of Barbara Bush, who is also obviously in charge on the domestic front, and adored by her family in that role. If you were a member the Bush family and Barbara Bush said no to something you suggested and George H.W. said yes, which one do you think would matter? I'd say, the Silver Fox, as the Bush family calls her. Michelle Obama is that way about their home, the girls, and all that matters in family life.

For anyone to judge Michelle Obama without researching and finding out the facts, to me is just plain ignorance. She is not racist, nor hateful. Anyone who says other wise is probably white and doesn't understand the struggles she has faced. Cindy came from a rich family, and pretty much had everything handed to her. I am successful now, but I worked for it. To me, someone who had to fight for the rights of the privileged deserves a chance to show what he/she is made of, rather than fall victim to rumors and lies.

What is pathetic is that so-called adults are allowing themselves to get sucked into the latest smear campaign against the Democratic front-runner and his family.

Shut up, you stupid people who are saying stupid things about Michele Obama -- who you DO NOT KNOW. Look in your stupid mirrors. You will see people with shrunken brains from lack of critical thinking.

Sad sad sad.

I admit to being surprised that McCain coverage has been all that positive. While, of course, there haven't been any rumors/innuendoes about Mrs. McCain saying things that some people take as racist or anti-American, I think she comes across as being a very cold/stand-offish woman. Mrs. Obama, on the other hand, seems like a very warm and comfortable-in-her-own-skin woman, in addition to being intelligent and accomplished.

As of the time of this posting, I am seeing that the comments are now displaying the old way, from earliest (at the top) to latest (at the bottom of the final page). Is this a deliberate change, or a software glitch?

It's too bad to see the same nasty, kneejerk troll comments at the top for all time, but perhaps this is a more natural way to read them. Up to you, just thought I'd mention it in case it was not intended.

What is odd is that the negative coverage to date has been about Michelle Obama, and that there has not been any mainstream mention of Cindy McCain's felonious narcotics theft from her non-profit in the 1990's. I can't call it a felony since she of course avoided conviction because her husband was a senator. But anyone else would have done time for what Cindy did.

Has Cindy McCain finally kicked her perscription drug habit?

When she pled guilty to stealing perscription drugs, did she serve time or was it community service?

Did John have any role in the type and length of sentence she received?

Alright Michelle! '08

She has really stepped up in support of her husband, and on the people's side. She understands we need a different course this time. She has passion. She will make a wonderful first lady. I believe she will definitely get involved, moreso than simply being in the shadow. She loves her family. Michelle is awesome.

Cindy is nice. I haven't seen her like I've seen Michelle stepping out with such support and talking to people, and at rallies. I saw her briefly on news, kindly answering questions. Apart from that, I'm not comfortable with her support on McCain's Bush-similar policies; however, I can see how she would want those awesome tax cuts for the wealthy. When McCain gives his speeches, Cindy is standing near his side, sharply dressed, and smiling. She's gorgeous too.

is proud of her country because she has never been discriminated against, because of the color of her skin and she is RICH. now miss claudine. know your facts and and sit back and relax, and meet your new first lady.

It is interesting to hear those in their Obama coma to criticize those who have a negative opinion about Michelle when they criticized Hillary without knowing her achievements. I am sorry this Democrat is tired of all the Obama crap and wants substance. His political record is nil and his associations are beginning to bother me. Anyone from Chicago politics can't be that honest, believe me. The liberal wing of the Democratic Party is going to give this election to McCain and the nation might be better for it.

I can identify myself better with Michelle Obama who had to work hard to get to where she is today. She studied hard and came out with flying colors from Princeton and Harvard; she is a working mom that has raised two wonderful children and as far as I can tell, seems to have a great married life with Barack.

Cindy McCain, while having done some excellent philanthropic and special education work, grew up in a very affluent family and pretty much got everything handed to her, including a $100M inheritance. That's hard to relate to for a lot of Americans, including myself.

The story here, and other news outlets got it nd used it...

is that Michelle Obama has far higher favorables than Cindy McCain.

But the Washington Post couldn't bring itself to tell that story. Muddied it till it wasn't readable.

What a stupid, foul, partisan rag this paper has become!

Not just this rather unimportant story, but throughout. It happened so fast. And is so thorough.
Must have been a big force at work to accomplish the complete, rancid takeover.

Posted by: not the story | June 18, 2008 10:53 AM

I respect and admire Michelle Obama and her hard earned success. She is truly a fine rolemodel for all young women. She earned her accomplishments. She is respected by her husband who turns to her for direction and advice.

Cindy McCain, not unlike her husband was basically handed everything she's got. She has/had a drug problem and stole from charities to satisfy that addiction. Then her husbands influence, the whole issue was covered up. Respectable, not hardly. I see Ms. McCain as another glassy-eyed republican stepford wife. Any woman that would tollerate being called a cun* by her husband in public has some issues.

Um, Bill, I don't think you are up to speed on this one. That rumor turned out several days ago to be a total hoax. It's the one that was widely promoted by a pro-Hillary Clinton blogger in the last few desperate days when they were trying to cling to the belief they could get the Democratic superdelegates to swing over to Hillary's side and reverse the expected outcome of the primary.

Aside from the fact that the tape doesn't exist, and the "story" about when it was taken keeps changing (a good sign of a hoax), the Obama campaign has posted links and details about the source of this attack and the later grudgin admission by right-wing attack experts that it "might not be true." Right. It's all on the "Fight the Smears" page on the Obama site in exhaustive detail, with links to outside non-Obama sources and other info.

Besides, as Michelle Obama has said, not only would she never say such a thing, someone her age would never use the word "whitey"--it's like something from the 1960s or 70s. It's how angry white right wingers making up a story imagine that a black person would talk.

I think you have to accept there's no such video. Just a smart, kind, professional black woman who rose by her own efforts from a working-class black community to excel at Princeton and Harvard Law, who is raising two beautiful girls, who gave back through her professional work as a community liaison for the University of Chicago hospital, and who would make a first lady every bit as distinguished and elegant as Laura Bush or Jackie Kennedy.

If the accusation was that he used the n-word, wouldn't that be all over the media? Do others think this is a double standard, and would this story impact people who would have voted for Hillary, but are now voting for McCain?

Posted by: John in DC | June 18, 2008 11:10 AM

Hey, 'political watchdog', try to keep a logical train of thought. Do you really think the exact same posters were attacking Hillary and now defending Michelle Obama? Some Obama supporters might have attacked Hillary (although many other Republican Lush Rambo right-wing nutjobs posing as Obama supporters engaged in most of the offensive postings as a divide the Dems tactic), but the personality type who would defend Michelle is not the type who would trash Hillary.

As far as the 'coma' characterization, who's really in a coma? Those facing the reality as a nation of adults that serious problems exist in both our foreign and domestic policy that require adult solutions, or denying that our leadership has put us on such a seriously wrong track and voting for more of the same? No, 'political watchdog', the nation won't be the better for more of the same---it's you who appear to be in the coma. We Obama supporters are wide, wide awake and have been for a long time, thank you very much. We have been paying attention.

Let's help educate the American people -- since the Post is not going to do anything except play stenographer to the GOP again this year.
Here we have her (as well as her stealing the cookies from the Food Network):

Cindy Lou Hensley McCain(John McCain's current wife)

Hensley(born on May 20, 1954) met John McCain in April 1979 at a military reception in Hawaii. He was the U.S. Navy liaison officer to the United States Senate, almost eighteen years her senior. He was married to his wife Carol, and had previously had extramarital affairs in the mid-1970s. Carol and John McCain had separated briefly once, but had since come back together. McCain and Hensley quickly began a relationship. Carol and John McCain finally separated in late 1979, Carol accepted a divorce in February of 1980, effective in April 1980, and then John and Cindy were married on May 17, 1980 in Phoenix.

In 1989, Cindy McCain became addicted to opioid painkillers such as Percocet and Vicodin, which she initially took to alleviate pain following two spinal surgeries for ruptured discs, and to ease emotional stress during the Keating Five scandal, which involved her as a bookkeeper who had difficulty finding receipts. The addiction progressed to where she resorted to stealing drugs from her own AVMT. During 1992, Tom Gosinski, the director of government and international affairs for AVMT, discovered her drug theft. Subsequently in 1992, her parents staged an intervention to force her to get help; she told her husband about her problem, attended a drug treatment facility, began outpatient sessions, and ended her three years of active addiction.

Cindy McCain could never understand how boring economic factors like inflation cut into the living standards of even middle-income Americans because she's beyond being insulated with her incredible wealth. Time for people a little more down-to-earth to run the show and the richest one percent to get a little less rich.

Posted by: poopee79 | June 18, 2008 11:26 AM

The poster who faulted Mrs. McCain for trying to look like his daughter, evidently doesn't know she's young enough to be his daughter. She was his adulterous partner in an affair, which broke up his marriage. Somewhere out there are 3 middle-aged children of his, her same age. She was so young then, the blame falls to him, he admits in his memoirs.

As for her blue eyes, those who find them scary, you REALLY need to get out more for you own edification.

Each time someone posts a racist attack or Fox lies we will hit back with the absolute truth about this powerful and rich couple trying to take our country over! So here are the FACTS about the person who finances McCain:

Cindy Lou Hensley McCain(John McCain's current wife)

Hensley(born on May 20, 1954) met John McCain in April 1979 at a military reception in Hawaii. He was the U.S. Navy liaison officer to the United States Senate, almost eighteen years her senior. And Cindy McCain? What did she ever do to be where she is today?! Oh! Right! She got daddy's beer empire! Gee, that rings familiar. And then she cheated with a powerful older guy who could be her father (guess that is why she became a drug thief) while the first wife was at home with the kids and in severe pain. What a moral couple we have here! Affimative action for John McCain -- he got his jobs because of his daddy and avoided criminal charges for his affairs with subordinates because of affimative action. Cindy got to stay out of jail several times due to her daddy's cash -- more affirmative action!

The 'whitey' tapes show Michelle complaining specifically, for one, of whitey's indifference after Katrina hit EXCEPT the taped event occurred year prior to Katrina. Uh oh. Voters, don't let them play you for a fool. It's been proven a hoax.

Posted by: jhbyer | June 18, 2008 11:46 AM

As a Conseravtive Christian I support McCain 100%. I have always wanted to have as president someone who would show Clinton to be highly moral. Cindy, who struggled throughout life to get where she is today, and John, who cheated his way to get where he is today, are what make the GOP the party of family values.
God bless!

Posted by: Michelle Obama | June 18, 2008 11:49 AM

And Cindy McCain? What did she ever do to be where she is today?! Oh! Right! She got daddy's beer empire! Gee, that rings familiar. And then she cheated with a powerful older guy who could be her father (guess that is why she became a drug thief) while the first wife was at home with the kids and in severe pain. What a moral couple we have here! Affimative action for John McCain -- he got his jobs because of his daddy and avoided criminal charges for his affairs with subordinates because of affimative action. Cindy got to stay out of jail several times due to her daddy's cash -- more affirmative action!

Affirmative action? Please, a black person goes to college and it's because of affirmative action? I live in a poor black neighborhood and see where AA has gotten a lot of black people. Given the choice of being born black and getting some sweet affirmative action, or being born a filthy rich beer heiress, I'm taking the booze cash any day. Nasty beer though, I can't drink that stuff.

Posted by: poopee79 | June 18, 2008 11:50 AM

Did Cindy start her drug stealing because of John's affairs with lobbyists? or was it because of her own affairs with lobbyists? Could the Post clear that up?

Posted by: Moral values via beer | June 18, 2008 11:51 AM

And if there is a whitey tape, will people like jhbyer change their support. No, they will then defend the tape and how Michelle was just representing the views of the black population. She is filled with hate. It is obvious to anyone who watches her body language or listens to her seethe. They won't let her say anything now except to introduce her husband. And even then, the handlers are nervous about what she might say.

Posted by: Anonymous | June 18, 2008 11:51 AM

Both candidates have committed to avoid personal matters and to focus their campaign rhetoric on the issues, for the health of the nation. It would be nice if the media would cooperate in that effort.

Why did Michelle Shaniqua Obama name her children Maliawan and Sashkisha? What strange names!

Posted by: Dianne72 | June 18, 2008 11:54 AM

Let's see...Cindy helped John with the bookkeeping for the Keating Five thefts, then stole drugs from a charity, then stole a cookie recipe from the Food Network... and before that she stole John away from his first wife! We now see how affirmative action for the top 1% of Americans is doing our country great!

And btw, the racism on here is pretty disgusting. It's sad that people can be so small and ignorant in this day in age. Sad, but not surprising. However, Bush/Cheney have been such an awful nightmare in every way possible, I think that's ample motivation for even some backwoods cousin-humper to go black for the presidency. If our government is a car, the Republicans are stripping it down to the frame. I am just so desperate for a leader who can at least speak English at a gradeschool level, even if he still f*@#s up everything else.

Posted by: poopee79 | June 18, 2008 11:58 AM

She is a disgrace to our country and should never be our First Lady.

Wake up America!

Dianne72 and PeaPod:

My 5 year old has more intelligence and emotional maturity than the two of you. Congratulations on your staggering ignorance evidenced by your comments.

Posted by: VirginiaIndependent | June 18, 2008 12:08 PM

Well for one thing, there are no "Whitey" tapes so that is an non issue. Going after either one of them is insane and the MCCaininsanes better be ware as I don;t think they want to go through all of Cindy's episodes when John was married. Also there is something needy about a woman who marries a man who is 18 years older.... what is that about?
This is typical of Americans, just cloud the issues with junk and we will wind up with several more wars, no health care and the like.

Posted by: RosaCA | June 18, 2008 12:50 PM

I hate reading these comments. To suggest that Affirmative Action got the Obamas where they are is perposterous! They worked hard and sewed the seeds of success and were rewarded for them. It amazes me the ignorance of these comments:

Why did Michelle Shaniqua Obama name her children Maliawan and Sashkisha? What strange names!

Posted by: Dianne72 | June 18, 2008 11:54 AM

Affirmative action got Michelle Shaniqua Obama into Ivy League schools - not grades.

All Posters should be ashamed. You have shown your racist and hateful personalities, not only for blacks but minorities in general...Judge and ye shall be judged accordingly!

I hope Obama wins just to piss all you people off who want him to lose because they believe a black person is 'inadequate' to lead.

All these whiteys in here are making me sick

I mean, hell, if any non white who comes to any sort of political power is going to be accused of being a racist monster, well, eventually us browns and blacks are going to realize that those old white men in power AREN'T gonna let us get ours, and the only way for us to even the score IS to BECOME white hating racists

Posted by: Raj | June 18, 2008 1:06 PM

I've only read half-way through these comments and that's enough. I'm an older white female, Obama supporter and I greatly appreciate the vitality that both Obama's bring to this election and to this weary country. I particularly love to see how obviously closely connected Michele and Barack are. This speaks volumns for her - that her husband loves her so much. It's a wonderful thing to watch after all the frozen marriages we've seen in politics over the years.

That said, I fail to understand why commenters who know nothing of Mrs. McCain's life, passions, successes, or failures want to harp about a past prescription drug addiction that she herself has discussed so openly. Why keep slamming her about the past? Does your past warrant this kind of observation? And why keep slamming her because she was born into a wealthy family. Do any of choose the families we're born into? Do you think it would be easy to be a popular politician's wife? Or wife to "Mr Wonderful" as quoted from Bill Richardson's wife. Get a life of your own people, if you think any of us can make it through 50 plus years without making mistakes, you would become so pious that no one would want to be around you. I don't know her and you don't know her, so back off. We all need grace, not judgement. Especially not from people who don't have a clue what it would be like to be in the public eye, scrutinized by anyone with a computer. Show a little class!

It takes one (Affirmative Action recipient) to know one.

America is affirmative action for those with pale skin. Why do you think the powers are fighting so hard to hold on?

Interesting to see on these blogs (starting with Claudine 1000 and others) that so many white people are pointing the finger of racism at Michelle Obama and other people of color.

As a white male and southern, it's often the easiest way to avoid looking within ourselves at how we have been inculcated with racialism and are in denial about the legacy of racism and slavery in this country.

There is a difference between being targeted as a racist if you're a person of color or targeted as a racist when you're white and historically part of the so called "majority race" in this country. Yes, targeting is wrong all around. As a white male, skin color is an issue i don't have to deal with when I walk down the street, go into a neighborhood that's not my own, a department store, driving down the road too fast, and many other places. I'm not "profiled" or "targeted" because of my skin color. A lot of white people, myself included, forget this or no nothing or little about this experience as we go about our everyday lives.

In 2008, we see there has been progress on these issues. There is long way to go and there is hurt, anger, and yes bitterness among all groups due to the history of racism and slavery. But as a "white person" with automatic privilege due to my skin color (and class
too - the often hidden subtext in all of this), I strive to and suggest we all look within before we call each other "racist" and examine our ingrained feelings and opinions closely. And either start or continue to engage in dialogue with people who are "different" than ourselves.

9/11 was a tragedy because of the loss of life. Another is that many in this country are so fearful of anything that is different than themselves. Fear kills our collective spirit and hopes. With all the progress made, we have a long road to walk and the opportunity is now. And it won't be easy or fast.

You know, I am a very dedicated and hard-working Obama supporter and it is almost impossible to exaggerate how much I DO NOT CARE if Cindy McCain had a problem with prescription drugs, or what family she happened to be born into, or what she wears, or any other aspect of her personal life. The fact that she has been open about the drug issue is admirable, but I would also agree with keeping it private.

If you want to make a list of prominent politician's wives who have struggled with alcohol or drug addictions I think you run into the very generous "length limit" on these Washington Post comments, and besides, it would be unfair to the wives as well. Perhaps we can mention some of the most public: Betty Ford, who dealt with this so courageously and founded the Betty Ford Clinic, and Kitty Dukakis. Also, what about Senator Kennedy's first wife? The list goes on.

I think the whole syndrome is a horrible testament to the pressures created on political spouses by the nature of American politics and I don't want to hear one more word about it in reference to Cindy McCain or anyone else. In fact, I don't care if her problems predated her husband's time in office or her marriage. Drug addiction by a spouse is a personal tragedy, not a reason to vote one way or the other. I JUST DON'T CARE.

These women who bravely put themselves out there to support their husbands deserve our respect and admiration and not a lot of stupid cheap shots from people whose own lives probably couldn't bear five minutes of media examination.

It's certainly a heck of a way to woo independents' votes, too, by tastelessly bullying your opponent's wife. Can I put this more clearly? Just shut up, already.

Let's support Cindy McCain and Michelle Obama in their good efforts and go back to deciding whether or not to vote for their husbands, who are actually the ones on the ballot.

Claudine1000, you sound like a perfect candidate for a very good shrink I know to be used as his guinea pig. Some unhappy childhood experience? Or are you just so ugly that no man will look at you which just p*** you off so much in general? Whatever it is, your blind hatred just shines through. Not a pretty sight.

Posted by: thisworld | June 18, 2008 4:50 PM

Well, the world has come to expect not much from typical American women nowadays, all thanks to Hollywood formula manufactured B-movies. Therefore, in a sense, Cindy McCain is the perfect imbodiment of that characterization of female heroins in these B-movies. Dumb, bottle blond whose only neuro-capability is remembering designer logos and names. Great qualities for the First Lady of America!

Posted by: Anonymous | June 18, 2008 5:00 PM

Dianne 72, trying to fiqure out if that is your age or your IQ. I'm sure John McCain would not agree with you as his spoke person. He is a better man than that. I know Hillary Clinton would not. You must be a lonely miserable person to be so consumed by hate. You need to get out more and walk while the sun shines. Try a little sex that might brighten your out look.

I just came across this blog and am shocked that there are people at the Post who understand statistics (I hope these bloggers do). I've always found the Post's reporting and editorial staff pitiful at understandig statistics. Evidence includes calling poll results within the margin of error different (X leads Y in support 43 to 41%); having an editorial on the increase in the uninsured using CPS estimates that were not statistically different from the previous year (yes, I looked up the SEs); citing a number of gays in the military that appeared to simply be 10% of the total military (I've never read a respected population or demography paper that accepts 10% as the percent of the population that is gay, and even if 10% were a reasonable estimate, there are many reasons to believe the percentage in the military would be lower); and the oft-cited and never correct 50% of marriages end in divorce. I sincerely hope these bloggers can improve the Post's use of statistics.

Maybe people have a poorer view of Cindy because McCain was still married with children when she began her affair with him. McCain himself admitted they both lied about their ages when the met and said their marriage was based "on a tissue of lies".

His first wife Carol waited for him while he was a POW in Vietnam, but she was in a horrific car accident and after 23 surgeries she was 4 inches shorter and considerably heavier when he returned.

After his return, he had an affair with Cindy and left his first wife for her. http://www.stopthinkvote.com/facts/personalfacts.html

Whether Michalle NObama loves her country or not is her business.

What I know as a Clinton supporter is that, Michelle said way back when, that she would n't support Hillary if Hillary became the nominee. I don't remember when she said this, but must have been in Feb, perhaps before even Super Tue.

Now the NObamas are shamelessly pandering to get access to Clinton's purse and donors, after having blackmailed her thru their prostitute media pals and scumbag dem party honcho nitwits, to get Clinton's endorsement.

This is not a person and not a couple, I could ever support, thank you very much.

Posted by: intcamd1 | June 18, 2008 9:08 PM

I think Michelle Obama is a beautiful, strong, intelligent woman. Has she said a couple of things that were blown entirely out of context? Yes. Has she learned from those mistakes? Most definitely.

At least she is a real person. She worked her way up to where she is, she is dedicated to her family, she doesn't just stand and nod adoringly at her husband - she has a personality and I think she's great.

The only thing I have ever heard Cindy McCain say is something nasty about Michelle Obama. She definitely has the adoring stare and nod down pat. Everything I have read about her is negative, about drugs, eating disorders, and a mega inheritance - no real personal accomplishments.

For me, this is a no-brainer. Michelle is a much more reasonable choice.

Posted by: Susan | June 18, 2008 10:44 PM

Actually what Ms Obama said about whether she could support Ms Clinton was something to the effect that ...[she] would have to think about that....

I don't remember when that occurred, but I believe it was before all the other Dem candidates withdrew. So I would have had to think about it too (I was for Edwards....)
