If you read this you'll make history

Good morning everyone and welcome to the historic launch of my first-ever blog. I want to thank the good folks at WashingtonPost.com for the brilliantly put-together grand opening party. I would also like to thank my agent, and my agent's agent, and her spokesman, and all the little people I trampled over to get this prestigious gig. My mother always wanted me to write for the Washington Post and today she gets her wish. Now, if only she had a computer...

But enough about me and my mother, let me explain to you what we have going on here. I cover the law as an analyst and commentator for CBS News and so I spend my days hearing about, and then trying to decipher, the latest legal developments and issues, from Michael Jackson to eminent domain, from Zacarias Moussaoui to the ladies and gentlemen of Enron. Now, courtesy of this new blog, I am going to help steer you through those shoals five-days-a-week. When there is breaking legal news you'll be able to come here and get instant analysis. When there are little-known but quite-interesting legal stories you'll be able to read about them here. And when you want to understand more about the legal system you'll be able to bang out a question and fire it over to me and I will do my best to answer.

And that's truly what is going to make this thing work. I want to hear from you. Want to hear what you think about the legal news I'm blogging about and also about how I'm covering it for you. This should be a dialogue of sorts, me and you, with the idea being that we can both learn a little from one another. Three or four times a day you'll be able to come here and learn something new, something you didn't know before about the law, something you otherwise weren't likely to come across during your trawl through the newspapers or online. Think of me as your own personal legal analyst-- but no emails about fixing your latest parking ticket. I am a recovering attorney-- I don't practice anymore.

Okay, thus endeth lecture. I'm not going to try to convince you the law is fun. It isn't. But there is no reason why reading Bench Conference can't be at least enjoyable. That's the goal. If you have read this far, you are part of history. The first folks on the bandwagon. Welcome. I hope you stay a while.

Hi Andrew,

We met last summer at the CCPIO Conference in Kansas City. I found your comments at the conference to be insightful and thought provoking. I look forward to reading your blog.

The masses would like to know how you managed to achieve such fabulous success despite your tendency to smash chairs into splinters when upset. :)

Posted by: Freep | May 10, 2006 10:02 AM

hey there! what a terrific addition to the blogosphere. your commentary and columns have already added so much to legal journalism and our country's understanding of how our system works (and doesn't work). the more venues for andrew cohen the better! thanks for the link!

So expands the Cohen empire. A pleasure to read, from afar.

Posted by: Mike Colman | May 10, 2006 01:27 PM

Congrats Andy. I'll be adding this to the day's required reading.

Posted by: Katkin | May 10, 2006 01:46 PM

And to think, I showed you how to make your first martini (does that entitle me to that agent cut that you referred to?)

Congrats. Looking forward to the blogs. L.P.

Congratulations on you new journalistic venture.
I will look forward to reading my first (and only) blog-that is after reading all the briefs lawyers file in my cases.
Great job so far.
Ditto on buying your mom a computer!

Welcome, Andrew. I think you will be a great addition. I gave you a big shout-out at Talkleft.com, praising your writing and commentary, so I won't repeat it here.

And Judge Ruckriegle, congrats on reading your first blog. Be careful though, if your courtroom has Wi-Fi, you may find us addictive, particularly when having to listen to the lawyers argue those briefs.

Andrew, I found out about your blog from TalkLeft, which I read religiously. Congrats on starting your own. Cheers,

I just realized the comments here allow urls to be posted. Here's my shout-out with compliments to you.

Welcome to the blogosphere! I've watched your analysis on CBS News for as long as you've worked there and always enjoyed your reports for their stick-to-the-factsiveness. I look forward to visiting this section of the WaPo site more often and wish you the best of luck!

Posted by: Fini Finito | May 10, 2006 07:40 PM

I'm bookmarking your blog and looking forward to reading it often. I'm going to recommend it to my mother, who just turned 90 and is on her computer every day to read the WaPo, email all over and make sure the world keeps turning. Your mother will love it.

After reading your opening paragraph, let me welcome you and offer you a quick word of advice: you work for post.com, not the Washington Post.

I hear that folks are a bit touchy about this distinction around DC . . .

Welcome, Richard!

After your opening paragraph, let me offer you a quick word of advice. You work for WashingtonPost.com, not the Washington Post.

I hear that some folks at the latter place are a bit sensitive about the distinction. . .

This is a good idea , now we'll get an exchange of comments on the law that will be both lively and timely . I'm right aren't I ?
In any event the best of luck , this is something I'm really looking forward to .
