Gonzo on the Hill: A Comedic Tragedy

Forget about the politicization of the Justice Department. Forget about the falling morale there. Forget about the rise in violent crime in some of our biggest cities. Forget about the events leading up to the U.S. Attorney scandal and the way he has handled the prosecutor purge since. Forget about the Department's role in allowing warrantless domestic surveillance. Forget about the contorted and contradictory accounts he's offered before in his own defense.

Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales deserves to be fired for his testimony Tuesday alone; for morphing into Jon Lovitz's famous "pathological liar" character (or maybe just one of the Marx Brothers) as he tried to dodge and duck responsibility before the Senate Judiciary Committee not just for his shameful leadership at Justice but also his shameless role in visiting an ailing John Ashcroft in the hospital to try to strong-arm him into renewing the warrantless surviellance program. Can anyone out there remember a worse, less-inspiring, less confidence-inducing performance on Capitol Hill? I cannot.

No reasonable person watching Gonzales' tragically comedic performance Tuesday's on Capitol Hill-- especially his miserable exchange with Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) in late morning-- can any longer defend his appalling lack of competence, courage and credibility. And no one who hears him say that he is what's best for the Department right now should forget that on the eve of his testimony (and a few days after he urged his subordinates to work diligently to regain their morale) the nation's top law enforcement official reportedly left work early to go for a bike ride Monday afternoon-- at about 3:50 p.m.

I am running out of words to describe how inept this public servant is and how awful is the message our government sends to the nation and to the world by allowing him to continue to represent us. So I'll just turn it over to Sen. Schumer. Here is part of the exchange between the two (they are discussing the contradictions between what Gonzales had previously said about L'Affair Aschroft and also about under-oath discrepancies between Gonzales' version of events and the version offered by former Deputy Attorney General James B. Comey, We pick up where Gonzales is trying to yet again weasel out of his prior statements on the topic):

SCHUMER: I'd like to just pick up where Senator Specter left off, about the TSP program. Just a few preliminaries.
First, I take it that there was just one program that the president confirmed in 2005. There was not more than one.

GONZALES: He confirmed one, yes, intelligence activity. Yes, one program.

SCHUMER: Thank you. OK. Now, you -- and you've repeatedly referred to the, quote "program," that the president confirmed in December 2005. Let me just -- I'm going to put up a chart here. Here's what you said before this committee on February 6th of 2006. You said, quote, "There has not been any serious disagreement about the program the president has confirmed. With respect to what the president has confirmed, I do not believe that these DOJ officials that you were identifying had concerns about this program." This was in reference to a question I asked you, "Was there any dissent here?"

This was before Comey came to testify. It was in February. But we had some thoughts that maybe that happened. And now, of course, we know from Jim Comey that virtually the entire leadership of the Justice Department was prepared to resign over concerns about a classified program. Disagreement doesn't get more serious than that. And what program was the ruckus all about? And this is the important point here. At your press conference on June the 5th, it was precisely the program that you testified had caused no serious dissent. You said, "Mr. Comey's testimony" -- and he only testified once -- "related to a highly classified program which the president confirmed to the American people some time ago."

SCHUMER: These are your words, right? You don't deny that these are your words. This was a public press conference.

GONZALES: I'm told that in fact here in the press conference I did misspeak, but I also went back and clarified it with the reporter.

SCHUMER: You did misspeak?

GONZALES: Yes. But I went back and clarified it with the reporter...

SCHUMER: When was that? And which -- what was the reporter's name?

GONZALES: At The Washington Post two days later.

(CROSSTALK)

GONZALES: Dan Eggen was the reporter.

SCHUMER: OK. Well, we'll want to go follow up with him. But the bottom line is this: You just admitted there was just
one program that the president confirmed in December...

GONZALES: The president...

SCHUMER: ... just one. Is that correct, sir?

GONZALES: The president talked about a set of activities...

SCHUMER: No, I am just asking you a yes-or-no simple question, just as Senator Specter has. And just like Senator Specter and others here, I'd like to get an answer to that question. You just said there was one program. Are you backing off that now?

GONZALES: The president...

SCHUMER: Was there one program or was there not that the president confirmed?

GONZALES: The president confirmed the existence of one set of intelligence activities.

SCHUMER: Fine. Now let's go over it again, sir, because I think this shows clear as could be that you're not being straightforward with this committee; that you're deceiving us. You then -- then you said in testimony to this committee in response to a question that I asked, "There has not been any disagreement about the program the president confirmed." Then Jim Comey comes and talks about not just mild dissent, but dissent that shook the Justice Department to the rafters. And here, on June 5th, you say that Comey was testifying about the program the president confirmed. You, sir...

GONZALES: And I've already said...

SCHUMER: Sir.

GONZALES: ... I have clarified my statement on June 5th. Mr. Comey was talking about a disagreement that existed with respect to other intelligence activities.

SCHUMER: How can we -- this is constant, sir, in all due respect with you. You constantly make statements that are clear on their face that you're deceiving the committee. And then you go back and say, "Well, I corrected the record two days later." How can we trust your leadership when the basic facts about serious questions that have been in the spotlight, you just constantly change the story, seemingly to fit your needs to wiggle out of being caught, frankly, telling mistruths? It's clear here. It's clear. One program. That's what you just said to me. That's what locks this in. Because before that, you were, sort of, alluding -- in your letter to me on May 17th, you said, "Well, there was one program," -- you said there was the program, TSP, and then there were other intelligence activities.

GONZALES: That's correct.

SCHUMER: You wanted us to go away and say, "Well, maybe it was other" -- wait a second, sir. Wait a second.

GONZALES: And the disagreements related to other intelligence activities.

SCHUMER: I'll let you speak in a minute, but this is serious, because you're getting right close to the edge right here.
You just said there was just one program -- just one. So the letter, which was, sort of, intended to deceive, but doesn't directly do so, because there are other intelligence activities, gets you off the hook, but you just put yourself right back on here.

GONZALES: I clarified my statement two days later with the reporter.

SCHUMER: What did you say to the reporter?

GONZALES: I did not speak directly to the reporter.

SCHUMER: Oh, wait a second -- you did not.

(LAUGHTER)

OK. What did your spokesperson say to the reporter?

GONZALES: I don't know. But I told the spokesperson to go back and clarify my statement...

SCHUMER: Well, wait a minute, sir. Sir, with all due respect -- and if I could have some order here, Mr. Chairman -- in all due respect, you're just saying, "Well, it was clarified with the reporter," and you don't even know what he said. You don't even know what the clarification is. Sir, how can you say that you should stay on as attorney general when we go through exercise like this, where you're bobbing and weaving and ducking to avoid admitting that you deceived the committee? And now you don't even know. I'll give you another chance: You're hanging your hat on the fact that you clarified the statement two days later. You're now telling us that is was a spokesperson who did it. What did that spokesperson say? Tell me now, how do you clarify this?

GONZALES: I don't know, but I'll find out and get back to you.

I, for one, have a renewed feeling of supreme confidence in Att. Gen. Gonzales. In fact, my level of confidence in this man has transcended verbal description. He is more akin to a celestial body than a human being to me at this point.

The great tension in this country over government is whether there is any way, any legal, Constitutional way to force the Gonzalas's out of office? We are becoming overwhelmed with evidence of manipulations of wars, laws, justice but we can do nothing to relieve the tension between the obvious offenses of this administration and our helplessness. This is the sort of anxiety and tension which results in revolutions, except that we can't even seem to get a handle on how to start one. I'm afraid this unaccountable dictatorship will be unreachable by November '08.

It was one of the most astounding performances by an administration official in my life time. I would put it right up next to Senator McCarthy and his witch hunt.
Gonzales has proven himself, through his own words and actions to be utterly incapable of being Attorney General.
Does Bush keep him on for fear that an independent Attorney General would not protect him from the crimes and misdemeanors of his administration? Is Bush hiding behind the skirts (trousers) of this rather pathetic AG?

Based simply on this transcript alone, I believe it unavoidable that Mr. Gonzales should be arrested and indicted for committing a crime.

In fact, I'm wondering if I can make a citizen's arrest....

If the Justice Department won't budge, then Congress does have the power to convict on its own, and it must use it.

Gonzo's performance is consistent with the Republican Party's core belief that "less government is better government."

Unfortunately, Bush & Co. take this to a newer, more incompetent level than anyone could have imagined.

But think about it. Democrats think government should work for the people. Republicans think government should do as little as possible for anyone, because to allow so would mean more taxes.

So none of this idiocy is surprising at all, HAD ANYONE EVER PAID ANY ATTENTION to what Republicans have been saying for the past 20 years.

Still, the big question remains: who the hell are they spying on? We know the illegal NSA program started pre-9/11 - that's six years of illegal spying that we officially know about, and now there's Gonzo's "other intelligence activities," (like spying on nuns and peace groups?) Andrew Cohen is, at best, a poor excuse for a reporter.

All I needed to read was the first few lines of this trashy article and I realized that it was destined to be a hit piece against the Attorney General. It makes little or no difference as to the accuracy of Cohen's content, his immediate hostile attitude soured any potential for a real report on what happened.

I don't care what he thinks he did, he didn't do it well and I challange anyone to tell me that he's a reporter. He is a talking head (mouth?) and an OpEd writer and nothing more. Cohen is anything but a reporter and this article proves it.

True to the Washington Post, bias is the name that Cohen should have used for his byline.

I am not going to defend Gonzales. He can defend himself. Pretty sorry performance by him, but you have to understand that these hearing are not conducted to garner information. They are nothing but a "gotcha" show. It doesn't matter if Democrats, or Republicans are running congress. All we are looking at are non-sensical folks saying non-sensical things.

I watched the hearings and the Senator from Vt. wouldn't listen, he had his agenda, The Vice President had it right--F.O. Leahy.

As for Up Chuck Schummer, a more insipid ass may never make it to the surface.

Mr Leahy said polls etc ranked Mr Gonzalez approval rating at an all time low. The Attorney general should have pointed out his was higher than that of Congress.

This doing nothing B.S. has to stop, Close Gitmo, they all agree, but where do you send these animals---into our court system? I say put them in Vt, Pa, and Ny. Now they can fix it the way they want!!!

(SIGH!) Cohen-you've got it ALL WRONG, as usual. There was nothing the least bit "shameful" about Gonzales' hospital trip. Seriously ill? A gallbladder operation? I don't THINK SO! The AG said "Ashcroft did most of the talking" when he arrived at the hospital. Why wouldn't Ashcroft? A gallbladder operation is routine, usually a day in the hospital, maybe two, max. Ashcroft was no more "seriously ill" than anything, the fact that James Comey wanted to mislead and exaggerate the "seriousness" of the situation the situation to Congress should come as no surprise. After all, hasn't Comey ALWAYS done that, and taught those attorneys in the EDVA USAO to DO THE SAME THING-TO MISLEAD AND DECEIVE?

Remember, James Comey was Ashcroft's DAG-and he SIGNED OFF ON EVERYTHING-INCLUDING CHERTOFF'S PATRIOT ACT.

Comey is nothing but an overpaid Lockheed-Martin executive snake in the grass-his word is NOT to be believed. He was just into trying to bring down the AG because of his personal dislike of him, among other reasons, because Comey testified that Gonzales "did not speak to me" while Gonzales was in the hospital room. Comey thought that Gonzales wasn't being respectful enough to him! Comey didn't LIKE THAT!

When a government stops, or refuses to be held accountable to the people who elected them, the government stops being a democratic government and becomes a dictatorship. Gonzales is the least of our worries when the president refuses to allow members of his cabinet to be subpoenaed by congress, and the vice president can't decide which branch of the government he works for today.

I'm never been one to advocate impeachment, but it is looking more and more as though the Attorney General is either:

1) so completely detached as to be criminally negligent in the performance of his duties; or

2) willfully misleading Congress (and even more importantly, the American people)

In either instance, Gonzales must go for the same of the country, and DOJ. And if impeachment is necessary, then Congress should reluctantly proceed in that direction.

Crime rates in our cities reached their lowest point since 1994 in the year 2005. Since then a couple of cities have edged slightly higher than their lowest point, but are still way down, while all the rest continue to decline. I could punch holes in the entire story, but an objective person should get my point.

You, sir, are right. Andrew Cohen is an Op-Ed Columnist. See at the top of the page where it says "Columns & Blogs?" It's right next to "Opinions." That said, calling him a hatchet man doesn't disprove what he says. Go back and watch the hearing on C-Span. It was one of the most embarrasing things I have ever seen.

By the way, Cohen writes for washingtonpost.com, not The Washington Post. While there is certainly content that appears on both, they are actually two seperate news organizations. One is filled with reporters and a few editorialist, and the others are predominately bloggers. Check out Robert Novak's washingtonpost.com column, and you will see that the website has a bias towards bias itself, but not towards any particular ideology.

First, "I clarified" means me, myself. Second when he knew he would be caught in the lie, yes "This Blatant Lie", he said a "spokesperson" clarified for me. Well, who is this spokesperson, and what does the reporter have to say about this?

Finally, it is absolutely clear that Bush is keeping Gonzalez on as AG so that a Special Prosecutor is not hired to further investigate the administrations role, Cheney's role, in outing Plame, the reason why eight US Attorneys were fired and at whose behest, and finally, and most importantly, the legality of Bush's role and Gonzalez's role in violating the specific language of the FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) Statute(s).

Its sleaze pure and simple. What a terrible web we weave when we practice to deceive. What arrogance and what an absolute shame and disgrace starting with the President on down.

It's standard intelligence activity, unleashed against American citizens on US soil. The best way to understand it is not to think of Jeb Bush listening in to international phone calls to Osama bin Laden, but rather to think of organized crime. Surveillance is just a tool for the Bushies to conduct intellectual property theft and gain business and political advantage. It is a tool that allows them to conduct burglaries with impunity, for example. Politicization (an extremely polite way to describe quite sinister activity) is not limited to firing US Attorneys, it pervades down to all levels of law enforcement and the justice system.

The good news is that if you're a Republican evangelical who contributed money to the RNC, you have nothing to worry about.

writing about this Gonzales using his bike tends to humanize this guy - when this guy is in public people should ask him technical questions about his job, the tools he uses - this will show off his lack of knowledge and ability - cause you will never get slime like this directly - all you can do is embarass.

Maybe we deserve leadership like this. It's just depressing - a president who got though school on his famous daddy's name, dodged serving in the military, and backed by crooked VP with his hands in everyone's pockets, and terrible wrongway "public leadership". These people don't want to help us, they want our money, and power.

And for the record what these guys private lives are like is none of our business. I could care less who people sleep with - it is not related to their job any more than who you sleep with is related to your job.

Get rid of the bunch of them any way we can - mostly by jeering and refusing their lead - it won't hassen anything but maybe we'll feel better about their departure.

Next time there is a war - any war - protest IMMEDIATELY - don't wait.

It's obvious there are unreported secret programs not yet disclosed to the public (or our enemies). Gonzales can't talk about them, but Schumer is too blinded by partisan politics to get away from the cameras to find out what's really going on in the War on Terror.

A few comments on everything I've read here:

I am from New York, and as far as I'm concerned, Senator Schumer is working for us just fine. We send our senators to DC to hold folks like Alberto Gonzales's feet to the fire.

Janet Reno a worse AG than Gonzales? How? Waco was a tragedy, but the people responsible were David Koresh and the Branch Davidians, not Janet Reno.

Reno was also the one who authorized the Independent Counsel to pursue the Monica Lewinsky investigation, leading directly to the impeachment of her boss. Can you picture Gonzales authorizing anything of the kind?

Leaving work early to go bicycle riding? I thought Gonzales was so unbelievably busy protecting our kids from child predators? Maybe if he spent more time at the office, he'd have some idea of what was going on there.

For impeachment, the House only requires a majority vote. I urge the House to vote to impeach the Attorney General. It will fail in the Senate (which requires a two-thirds majority to convict), but a House vote and a Senate trial would be good for America.

Worth noting that the gravity of these kind of historical inflection points in our country's democratic process are always well lit by the presence of very Senior public servants, (just like Senator Byrd's great exchange with Senator Frist on the so called nuclear option). The American people should really pay attention when the Elder Statesmen of public service decide to pick their battles. This is serious stuff folks.

I've looked at video excerpts of Mr. Gonzales' testimony today. If George Bush does not fire this obvious liar, Congress needs to impeach him. Really. This is completely insane and completely reprehensible. It doesn't matter WHY George W. Bush wishes to keep this embarrassment to the world on the job. Congress has a responsibility to the American people, to our civil and criminal justice system, TO THE CONSTITUTION, to impeach this person and return this great country to the rule of sanity and law.

Impeach Gonzales, reclaim our democracy, then follow the bread crumbs back to Bush and Cheney and R-O-V-E. The Senate should only confirm an honest man or woman to be Attorney General, and then the investigation should start.

Bush is the least intelligent president in history - - and in the company of Jimmy Carter, that's really saying something. But Bush is so much worse, because (1) he insists on surrounding himself with persons even less intelligent than he is, so aptly demonstrated by selecting and then defending a "Gonzo" for the nation's leading law enforcement officer and (2) he has opened the door for someone like Hillary Clinton to even be considered. His six year+ reign (and that's what it's been, because there's been nothing that has even resembled the American democratic process at work throughout), has almost neutered the previous two hundred and twenty five years of sacrifice and hard work by founding fathers and patriots who have forged and defended a nation in which even a brain-challenged coward could be elected.

As much as I despise Mr. Bush, his administration and the NeoCon agenda, it is the congress with whom I am most angry. The public spectacle of flogging an imbecile, while good theater, does not replace the sworn duty of every congress member to uphold the constitution and rein-in the power of a tyrannical executive and his devoted minions.

To the facile members of congress this is a reminder. We are pissed off and we want change. Stop the war in Iraq; impeach the dictatorial president and his politically motivated cronies; Restore our constitutionally prescribed civil rights; and create a federal government that embraces transparency, accountability and fairness.

Mr. Gonzales is not the problem. Our shared failure to remedy that which we know to be wrong is.

I love to abuse this president and his entire administration verbally--I think they're criminals and murderers--but it amazes me how, though so many of us love to joke about Bush's inability to speak as evidence of his cocaine abuse (something attested to by many doctors)--it amazes me how on-point he manages to stay. He may mangle words, sentences, and whole thoughts, but he has an almost unfallible knack for not saying compromising things. He doesn't tip the administration's hand. Perhaps it's because he's on a very limited, need-to-know basis...but Gonzalez is similar. He'll say anything, do anything, moon the Senate, let himself be sodomized by the truth, in order to distract attention from the White House. Say what we will about the man's legal ineptitude--and he's a poor recommendation for Harvard Law--he's fulfilled his employers' wishes.

I hear the arguments against and they all sound like 'political' excuses. Look, the GOP found a way to impeach Clinton for lying about a BJ. They do this kind of stuff so much better than the Left. Why can't the Dems get off their Let's-Keep-The-I-Word-Off-The-Table butts and impeach this band of criminals for the many, many, many causes it has to impeach them for. (I think I know the answer!)

In GB they call Gonzales' type of conversation "waffling"........to speak or write at great length without saying anything important or useful.I have a twin sister who I thought was the world's expert at it until Mr. Gonzales came along. Has anyone spent any time researching Mr.Gonzales affliction to see if this is a recent development caused by working with a president that also has his own distinctive form of prevaricating.

Janet Reno, without question, had more integrity in her little toenail than Gonzales and THE REST OF the DOJ executives have in their whole selves. She was an excellent AG in every way, thoroughly qualified, like Gonzales, a Harvard Law graduate, a former seasoned prosecutor in Dade County who argued, and argued well, before the Supreme Court on occasion-she was NOT loved by Pres. Clinton, by any means-she did what she thought was right, followed the law, and appointed no less than SEVEN Special Prosecutors on her OWN President, regardless of how unpopular her positions were within her own party.

Another example of her integrity was ordering the Feds to go in and take Elian Gonzales, and bring him back to his father, a hugely controversial situation where she stuck to her guns and did THE RIGHT THING. Gonzales would NEVER have done that, not ever in a million years.

If the DOJ tried a thousand times over, they COULD NOT find someone with as much character, integrity, competence and RESPECT FOR THE RULE OF LAW as Janet Reno-anywhere. She is a true lawyer's lawyer, the first woman AG in the history of the US, who, like her mother, could also on occasion, wrestle gators!

To all those bemoaning Gonzalez'performance, I am not one of them; I'm glad he gets to screw up publicly, rather than successfully use the opportunity to lie and cover up, and enable the public to continue their delusions. I hear plenty of frustration, and not knowing what to do. Find a way to demand impeachment. I'm not a Republican but I don't have a problem with even James Baker taking over for the rest of the term if need be.

Our founding fathers are rolling over and over again in their graves as this administration moves farther and farther away from the spirit, the intent, and the language of our constitution. The thing that ANY poitician hates is accountability. No one likes to be scrutinized. Bush has been so eager to avoid any accountability that he has sacrificed his whole party - with their blessing.
In the process he has laid the golden egg for all politicians including the incoming democrats. The dems will continue to give Bush/Cheney every opportunity to embarass themselves and then step into control of the congress and the administration with the precedents of NO ACCOUNTABILITY intact.
Pelosi said right up front that impeachment is off the table--sure- we are not going to stop the nut job from paving the way for us to operate unfettered. Conyers is going to RELUCTANTLY issue supeonas to Harriet Meyers et al. Get tough--fat chance!!
The dems will continue to pretend to hold the wack job accountable but they don't want to really set any tough precedents that they will have to live with.

It's true that "Congress" from 2002 to 2006 under GOP majority control allowed this behavior to persist. It would also be accurate to state that a majority of GOP congressmen continue to allow this behavior to persist.

Gonzales is doing exactly what Bush wants him to do, and he is doing it superbly. So far, he has used up months with his clowning, and every day he wastes brings us one day closer to the end of Bush's term.

Then, the Republicans, with the collaboration of the entire mainstream press, are going to start a deafening chorus of "get over it- it's ancient history", and do every thing they can to see that the sordid story of Bush Administration corruption is buried.

By the way, that includes numerous Republican tools from your own paper, as you well know. I hope you are proud of the disaster that has befallen our country, and your part in bringing it about.

I found the reference to conversations with Monica Goodling (after claims that he did not talk to staff) to be the most interesting part of Gonzales' testimony today: "I was trying to console a very emotionally distraught woman," he said, adding, "she was confused and needed reassurance." He assured us there was no intent on his part to attempt to shape Monica's testimony. Just one of many, many lies Gonzales spoke today. The order of impeachment: Firewall first (Gonzales), Cheney, then Bush.

The underlying issue here is barely mentioned in this thread, namely:

The way we finance elections and whom we elect to Congress and also whom we select to staff the Executive branch; it yields a strange admixture of: (a) "career politicians" who are adversaries only by virtue of wearing the label of Democrat or Republican, and (b) rich and powerful semi-outsiders whose power depends on catering to a multitude of special interests and monied backers.

I used to think one had to be smart, glib, conniving, and somewhat dishonest to win in this system we have. Clinton showed us that combination in spades. Now we know that the "smart and glib" characteristics are much less relevant that the other two, provided you have connections to money and you know how to take care of those loyal to you.

It is becoming obvious to me that only a third party can get us back on track, one devoted to radical change in how governance is acted out and stands firm on values to which those in power are paying only lip service.

If the Democrats were up to the task, it would be happening now. Instead, we get political theater.

Gonzales and Congress are just the current "players" in a fool's game. The game's been going on for a while., That's why so few have any confidence in EITHER the Congress or the Exec Branch.

Okay, FURTHER TO JAMES COMEY'S CREDIBILITY ON THE HOSPITAL VISIT: The New York Times Article this morning has got the House and Senate leader of that 2004 meeting CONFIRMING GONZALES' ACCOUNT:

"But another member of the Gang of Eight -- the Republican and Democratic leaders of the Senate and House and of the two Intelligence Committees _-- supported Mr. Gonzales's version. Speaking on condition of anonymity, he confirmed the attorney general's testimony that the group reached a "consensus" that the disputed intelligence activity should continue and that passing emergency legislation would risk revealing secrets.

"Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California, who attended the 2004 White House meeting as House Democratic minority leader, said through a spokesman that she did not dispute that the majority of those present supported continuing the intelligence activity."

In other words, Comey's account was not exactly on the money -(gosh! what a surprise!) Ashcroft was recovering from gallbladder surgery, "he was "lucid" and "doing most of the talking" -so this belies Comey's characterization of him as "a very sick man" (gallbladder surgery is fairly routine).

In other words, DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU HEAR, WASH. POST REPORTERS AND BLOGGERS-EVEN THOUGH YOU LIKE THE SOURCE-JAMES COMEY IS AS MUCH A MISLEADER AND CONCEALER OF INFORMATION AS ANY HE SO SELF-RIGHTEOUSLY TRIES TO DISTINGUISH HIMSELF FROM THAT PACK-HE WAS, AND IS, PART OF THAT PACK!

If I were Lockheed-Martin, with its image problems, I sure wouldn't want a hugely well-paid general counsel like JAMES COMEY mouthing off like that, self-righteously misleading Congress and the public about the situation, in order to flex political muscle because of his personal animosity for the AG.

STEP 1: Congress applies the Power of the Purse and cuts off Gonzales's allowance. Gonzales immediately applies for Medicaid and is shipped off to Walter Reed.

Step 2: Congress appoints a Special Prosecuter to investigate the two or three MOST serious charges against Gonzales...not too many, though...remember OJ!

Step 3: The House of Representatives impeaches Attorney General Gonzales on the charges and refers him to the Senate for trial.

Step 4: The next time Gonzales testifies "innaccurately" or "misspeaks", he is held to be in Contempt of Congress...and jailed. Gonzales, speaking from his WWII army cotside, implicates himself during the oath...something about "telling the truth". Gonzales later will swear that he mistakenly held up his left hand rather than his right which was under the tarp fiddling with something at the time, so it doesn't count.

Step 5: The Special Prosecutor informs Gonzales that the charges WILL stick and offers him a deal in exchange for his cooperation.

Step 6: Gonzales declines and the Senate deports him...to Texas.

Setp 7: Bush "pardons" the Gonzales deportation, declaring it cruel and unusual punishment. The Senate agrees and he is brought back to jail. Bush then "pardons" the jail term...outraging EVERYONE...FINALLY!

Step 8: Bush is impeached. Cheney is impeached. Rove is impeached. Gonzales's impeachment continues. Rice is impeached and goes shopping for shoes. Some guy in Peoria is found to have two right feet...and impeached.

Step 9: Bush, Cheney, et al, are found guilty and removed from office.

Step 10: Speaker Pelosi is installed as President of the United States and immediately declares any further impeachments are "off the table". Pelosi is immedaitely indicted and impeached for preventing the Senator from New York from becoming the first woman president.

Step 11: Alexander Haig declares himself president, citing the "Les Droits du Seigneur" rule and "Jus Primae Noctae"...innaccurately, of course and not realizing they are one and the same. Chris Hansen decides to investigate Haig...sets up elborate sting which proves unnecessary when a naked Haig chokes on a chocolate chip cookie under the mistaken assumption that it was a pretzel.

Step 12: Katrina "Heckuva Job" Brownie is selected as president and approved by acclaimation.

Step 13: Bush, chopping brush on the South Lawn, unearths a colony of wombats who set upon him and eat him!

The Nation heaves a collective sigh of relief and goes back to business as usual...examining the question of whether a hairless and pregnant Britney Spears is more frightening than David Hasselhoff trying to eat a cheeseburger.

"House and Senate lawmakers who attended the Situation Room briefing are divided on the accuracy of Gonzales' account of that meeting, which he said concluded by a "consensus in the room from the congressional leadership is that we should continue the activities, at least for now, despite the objections of Mr. Comey."

Three Democrats -- House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller and former Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle -- dispute Gonzales' testimony. Rockefeller called it "untruthful," and Pelosi spokesman Brendan Daly said the speaker disagreed that it should be continued without Justice Department or FISA court oversight.

On the other hand, former GOP House Intelligence Chairman Porter Goss, "does not recall anyone saying the project must be ended,' spokeswoman Jennifer Millerwise Dyck said. And former Senate Republican leader Bill Frist stopped short of confirming or denying the meeting's outcome.

This lie-fest reminds me of the notorious UN speech that Collin Powell had to deliver to the UN in 2003 in preparation for the Iraq invasion.

Of course, the difference is that Powell looks and probably is an honest man, while Gonzales simply oozes pathological addiction to lying.

My favorite was his testimony a couple of years ago, when he said that George Washington, Abe Lincoln and other US Presdients had all done more electronic (sic.) surveilance than Bush.

Comey's credibility is unimpeachable in this affair, and your unsupported charges to the contrary are scurrilous. I'm not seeing any ringing endorsement of the AG by those GOP members who were briefed. The Negroponte memo concerning the briefing appears to contradict the AG flatly.

It looks like Gonzales is doing his job by being a viable distraction. Three carrier groups off Iran, an Iran that is accused of fomenting the troubles in Iraq. As if an invaded country needed outside encouragement to act as outraged as we would here in the same circumstances.

Sounds like the old WMD ploy all over again. Or maybe papa Bush's pretend that the Iraqis are amassed on the border of Saudi Arabia. Fool americans once, fool them twice, hell, fool them a thousand times. It will always work.

Bush's id is facing defeat and he can't handle it, hasn't been trained to face it in all those long speech and attitude trainings he went through in those long vacations at his Texas ranch. Remember, Bush could barely speak coherently the first two years of his first un-elected term. Rice was his keeper while he was either intensively trained or maybe cloned. Looking at Gonzales as anything but a willing distraction is giving him credit for
more freedom of choice and movement than he has.

Why haven't we heard in public forum from the attorneys that were dumped. That's what started this fiasco to begin with? Besides - remember the royal pardon no matter the outcome.

I wish upon the whole black house crew that they be gifted with a great change of heart and the love for all life, compassion for everyone they have ever damaged and suffer the grief and pain of every person they have ever hurt through their actions either directly or indirectly regardless of country or culture. If any such transformation could occur - Washington, D.C. would no longer be a foreign land to most americans and sideshow carnivals designed to distract would be a thing of the past.

Gonzales appeared to me to have little interest in being their and even less for the validity of the Constitution. Don't be concerned with lying, bad faith etc.. automated motivation (no brain needed, just activity)and self-esteem (if one follows the news day to day, one can see whenever there is suffering a loss of life to trouble American attention, he makes public statements about being "concerned with our self-esteem", when claims that insurgents kill innocent Iraqis for public show, he --don't believe me, read or hear his repeated statements in context in the speeches--voices the greatest concern that they are doing this to influence our national election, which the only meaning this could have is that don't be affected by the killing of innocent Iraqis, because that might unfairly hurt Republican election chances; if that's not a nutcase...) fix everything.

Gonzales testified as to a very specific, classified matter (no, I don't know what it is, but the important thing is, HE knows what it is!) Woo Hoo! The long knives are out now, aren't they? I was just WONDERING how long it would take for FBI Director Mueller to join the fray! The AP says he "contradicts" Gonzales' testimony-BUT THAT'S NOT THE WAY I READ IT!

First of all, MUELLER WASN'T EVEN IN THE HOSPITAL ROOM WHEN THE DISCUSSION WAS HELD, SO HOW THE HELL WOULD HE KNOW WHAT GONZALES SAID? The discussion was GENERALLY about the domestic wiretapping program -CERTAIN ASPECTS RELATED TO that program, yes, but Gonzales testified that he was discussing some very specific, and classified aspect-and that is why he and Card went to Ashcroft-with the approval of the Congressional committee-who KNEW the two were going to Ashcroft's hospital room.

Now, along comes Mueller, and wants to muddy the waters-but look sharp! Because HE DOESN'T ADD ANYTHING -SINCE HE WASN'T IN THE HOSPITAL ROOM WHEN THE DISCUSSION TOOK PLACE.

There's this picture out there: Comey, not wanting his credibility to be damaged, ringing up Mueller, saying "look dude, I need back-up, I can't get out and say anything more, but YOU CAN. We gotta get him out, for the good of the country!" (all patriotic, and altruistic and all!)

Ha! Ha!

Mueller despises Gonzales too, and they both thought that Gonzales would be gone and resigned by now, but NO DICE! So YEAH! I gotta say something!

Hmmm. Let's see who's left over there at DOJ? Wellll, Mr. NOT FULLY CANDID Paul McNulty is still hangin' around, ('cuz he doesn't have anywhere else to go yet, you know!) so he's REALLY engaging in some machinations, pulling some strings, helping the Comey brigade where he can-'cause Gonzales DESPISES McNulty (for good reason!).

But unfortunately, Mueller can't really ADD too much to the hospital room encounter (which will soon go down as a classic comedy routine) because, well, the Director ARRIVED AFTER Gonzales and Card had left (and doesn't that strike people as sort of X-file-ish?-It does me!)

Oh, this is endlessly amusing!

Unfortunately though, taxpayer money is being squandered in order to further this stupid political contretemps!

Oh, no, Comey is very slick. You see, he painted this melodramatic scene at the hospital of Gonzales taking advantage of this "seriously ill" Ashcroft, but at the same time, he emphasized just how strongly Ashcroft dissented from what Gonzales was saying-so, you can infer from that that Ashcroft was not so deathly ill that he didn't cogently argue, and do most of the talking, just as AG Gonzales said he did.

Comey also testified that in addition to him, FBI Director Mueller threatened to resign over this matter of the wiretapping program-except Mueller did not confirm that yesterday-so Comey exaggerated.


Comey had every reason to paint himself as this moral upstanding lawyer, who was trying to save the day, and that's a load of hogwash-Comey was employing some good PR for his part, (remember he signed off on that wiretapping program a few weeks later) -doing CYA, and trying to get Gonzales all at the same time-so when it benefited him to explain how strongly and clearly Ashcroft had expressed himself,-he did! But when it behooved him to say Gonzales was trying to take advantage of some poor "seriously ill man" he did that too!

All I'm saying is don't be fooled by the politicized shenanigans of Comey and his buddy Director Mueller-they both despise Gonzales, particularly Comey (remember before Comey resigned, he worked under Gonzales) and as for Mueller, I hope he's ready to pony up his notes (and who knows when Mueller wrote those notes-they could have been written just a little bit after Comey's testimony!)

I don't trust Comey OR Mueller further than I can throw a piano.

And neither Leahy or Spector are going along with this stupid special counsel request to examine "perjury"- if they do that, then they need to include Comey and Mueller's testimony as well.

And DON'T FORGET, COMEY SIGNED OFF ON THAT BIG BAD SURVEILLANCE PROGRAM A FEW WEEKS LATER, THE VERY ONE THAT HE SO SANCTIMONIOUSLY STATED THAT HE AND MUELLER WERE READY TO RESIGN OVER-EXCEPT MUELLER DIDN'T BACK UP HIS TESTIMONY ON THE RESIGNATION ISSUE YESTERDAY, NOW DID HE?

No it doesn't say anything about Gonzales' previous issues regarding his sworn testimony, but that's not on the table-what's on the table is what was going on regarding Comey's overly dramatized testimony, and the fact that Mueller "appeared" to support Comey's testimony-but it is curious to me that NOT ONE LEGAL PUNDIT pointed out that Mueller's testimony on the matter was purely hearsay-he wasn't in that hospital room when the conversation took place, and he was only repeating what Ashcroft told him-AND THAT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH-IT'S HEARSAY AS TO WHAT GONZALES SAID AND WHY HE WAS THERE.

By the way, has everyone noticed that James Comey has not had one public word to say after his testimony? I think Lockheed Martin effectively shut him up-I think they DID take him to the woodshed over all this overwrought controversy that he initiated-I know I would if I were a LM exec.
