The More Things Change...
I'm back, sort of, and I don't think I missed much while I was gone.
Another shoddy anti-terror measure was passed by the House of Representatives and then signed into law by President Bush, who has again succeeded in enhancing executive-branch power at the expense of vital oversight from and by the other two branches of government.
Another set of White House officials blew off a congressional investigation into the U.S. Attorney scandal. If the latest flip-off from Karl Rove and Co. doesn't cause Congress to take the dispute to court, I don't know what will. It's as predictable as it is disheartening that the legislators can rush to pass a questionable anti-terror measure (for fear of being branded soft on terrorism) but can't rush to bring to a head their executive privilege fight.
Another lame and ultimately failed attempt by Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales to explain his way out of trouble. He's apparently going to insist that black is white and white is black until they carry him kicking and screaming out of office. The most sensible reaction to the latest Gonzo waste? Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) who said: "It is a deeply regrettable that it takes so much work and effort for this attorney general to try to justify answers that appear to remain far short of the full truth the American people should expect from the nation's top law enforcement officer."
Another surprising twist in the Jose Padilla terror conspiracy trial down in Miami. As recounted by the Miami Herald's Jay Weaver, a defense witness told jurors late last week that he "used his New Jersey warehouse to store tens of thousands of pounds of used clothes, canned foods and medicine donated by American Worldwide Relief, an organization run by a defendant in the Padilla trial." If jurors believe the guy, then maybe the trial won't be the slam-dunk prosecution win so many people have predicted it will be.
Same as it ever was...
