Second Period Survival
I'm having software issues, so I'm going to be brief. I don't know how goaltender interference (or something) wasn't called on the Flyers' goal. But a team official told me the play was not reviewable.
Also, did anyone notice Biron's (non) reaction to Ovechkin's goal. He never saw it -- and wasn't due to a screen in front.
Game 7. Third period. Tied 2-2. This is why we watch. Enjoy.

What is the name of the song they play at Verizon to get the crowd into it which has a chorus sounding kind of like "WAHH WAHHH WAHH!" A high tempo rock song that gets me pumped every time. They just played it a minute ago. Anyone?

Regardless of the outcome...I'm a Flyers Fan and want to give the Caps and the Caps fans an early handshake for one hell of a series.
Game 7's are great...Game 7's with sudden death are the greatest events in sports.
Posted by: ChrisA | April 22, 2008 9:41 PM
Caps are missing great opportunities again. I hope this doesn't turn out like Game 4 as a result. Caps did a better job of limiting Philly's chances, though, so that was good. They've gotta put one in the back of the net in the OT. I would hate to see this end mostly because this team is so damned fun to watch.

I'm sure the sound feed on TV is a factor, but the crowd seems dead. Whenever the camera cuts to the crowd, the fans look like the most passive folks I've ever seen at a sports event. Good grief, it's Game 7.

And it's a Washington crowd. I love the Washington sports teams (except I'm an O's fan), but the large majority of fans who show up are pretty emotionless. You'd expect differently for a Game 7, but here we are. (It'll suck for the Wizards Thursday, too.)

Posted by: Bethesda_Jack | April 22, 2008 9:49 PM

Posted by: ChrisA | April 22, 2008 9:50 PM
You could see it coming. I had a bad feeling about this because the Caps are awful on the PK and because they missed so many opps in the third period.
I'm proud of this team, but I'm not so sure the best team moved on. It was inevitable though when the penalty was called because the Caps simply can't clear win they win face offs.

Jackass. Your team will be swept in the next round.
Posted by: Colin | April 22, 2008 10:07 PM
Goalie all over the place trying to track down rebounds and no one getting cleared. That was what doomed the Caps. Bad penalty.
so much for the Flyers fans gripes about the "NHL conspiracy" and the refs trying to get the Caps to the next round.
Posted by: nadir | April 22, 2008 10:08 PM
Priority No. 1 for the offseason: Fix the damned PK. How much looser could it be? This little rotation they have at the point is what creates the open shots from the top and the slot. They have to tighten it up.
Priority No. 2: Work on clearing the damn puck. I hated seeing it because it's the same thing that's plagued this team.
It's a shame because the Flyers scored two flukey goals and stole this game. But the Caps looked tight, particularly in the second period and OT.
Posted by: Colin | April 22, 2008 10:09 PM
Caps 2 (refs + flyers 3)=
horsesh*t
Posted by: josh | April 22, 2008 10:10 PM
Hey NHL officials, if you're going to swallow your &*)_^&)& whistles during the third period, don't puke them up to call a chippie penalty in overtime.
Posted by: Jimmie | April 22, 2008 10:10 PM
It's as though the Caps need to fall behind to be effective. They'll have to get over this backs-against-the-wall mentality next season and work on playing with prosperity.
Posted by: Colin | April 22, 2008 10:10 PM
By my count, that's at least two games where the "officials" have tilted the ice in the favor of Philadelphia. Too bad they couldn't have let the players decide the games. It's a disservice to the sport.
Posted by: Cole Younger | April 22, 2008 10:10 PM
ultimately this will prove a valuable learning experience for this young team....but it kills now....so depressingly "typical caps in PO"
Posted by: chris larry | April 22, 2008 10:11 PM
Caps got away with some penalties tonight, so it's not on them. Erskine could've been called for tripping earlier. A couple of other penalties went uncalled in the third period, too. Caps didn't capitalize on their numerous chances in the third, and it doomed them, just like it did in Game 4.
I hate saying it, but as soon as that penalty was called in OT, I said, "That's game." I had little faith in the Caps PK.
This team was too much fun to watch, but it ended in postseason disappointment. Wouldn't be a Caps season without that.
Posted by: Colin | April 22, 2008 10:12 PM
Hats Off to the Caps and the Caps fans (from a Flyers Fan). Great Series guys.

Agh. I'm as sports-heartbroken as I've ever been as an adult. Damn. Damn. Damn. Damn. Damn. Damn. Damn. Damn. Too many penalties ... no, no excuses. Just extremely disappointing. I know, I know: "great season, promising future, what a ride." But right now it's just blah. Blah, blah, Flyers, Blah.
I will now have to root for Crosby and Malkin. Caps will be better next year.
Blah.
Posted by: Scrappleseed | April 22, 2008 10:13 PM
I know it was a legit penalty, but come on, let em play. Call a penalty if there is a scoring threat. Horrible way to lose, pisses me off. Let the players decide it. Horrible officiated series, both ways.
Posted by: Pete Peeters | April 22, 2008 10:13 PM
I am very proud of this team. Remember they have already won several game 7s this year. The penalty was stupid on Tom Poti's part. The Caps had their chances and it just did not happen for them this year but their year is coming soon.
Posted by: Capsgroupie | April 22, 2008 10:13 PM
Who the *&^@$!*^# is left to root for? The Rags? THE PENS? I ain't gonna hold my nose and cheer on the Habs. Hockey season is officially over for 2008...
Posted by: Orange Crushed | April 22, 2008 10:15 PM
It was stupid on Poti's part. He didn't need to make that reach because there wasn't a legit threat at that point. He should've let it go.
Posted by: Colin | April 22, 2008 10:15 PM
Great game, but ouch.
In regards to the penalty kill, for the first time this series I saw a Cap go down horizontally to block a shot on the Penalty Kill.....I believe it was Cooke.
I'll go ahead an assume the definition of goalie interference will be altered in the off-season.
Caps fans, don't bother with those that want to give you a hard time. These are the same folks that throw batteries at JD Drew, cheer when a receiver nearly breaks his neck, beat up Jolly saint nick, and use cheese whiz on a cheese steak.
We all know what's up.
Best of luck Flyers
Posted by: Marc | April 22, 2008 10:17 PM
Yea, with what somebody else said earlier, they are going to have to get better defensivley. But there is a bright side, the Caps are only going to get better. Not like years past, where you didn't have anything to look forward too. Backstrom, Green, Ovie, Semin, and hopefully Alzner turns out to be as good as people say.
Posted by: Pete Peetes | April 22, 2008 10:17 PM
I'm heartbroken. The NHL will end up blocking my polite, non-profane inquiries but I just want clarification of the rules, i.e. Why did the bastards steal the game. Anyway, I'm still damn proud of the Caps, at one point this season all I was hoping for was 50 goals for OV. Now, I am just worried that if I spend more money on red, the league will switch home team colors again.
Posted by: uncatim | April 22, 2008 10:18 PM
@Orange Crushed
I was fully prepared to root on the Caps if they won this series. C'mon...maybe tomorrow you can find it in you to maybe root on the Flyers?
Posted by: ChrisA | April 22, 2008 10:18 PM
Great series never really followed the NHL much I'm a believer now!! too bad the second goal by the flyers counted how is it when the Caps had the same thing happen without the goal of course it was a penalty
and this was deliberately done with the collision with of Huet and the goal counts very bad call thanks refs
Posted by: brandnewcapsfans | April 22, 2008 10:18 PM
Can't go blaming the refs. Yea, there were questionable calls. But the Caps had so many chances that they didn't cash in on. Who to cheer for next? I'm picking a western team, maybe the Avs.
Posted by: tess | April 22, 2008 10:19 PM
I still can't believe there was no kind of whistle on the Flyers second goal. I don't care whether you call a penalty for interference or a faceoff outside for incidental goalie contact.
I feel cheated, but all the same we had our chances to wrap this one up. Fedorov should've scored that goal if he'd been watching Ovechkin like he should've been.
Bit of a dive on the penalty call on Poti, but that's neither here nor there. He's a veteran and shouldn't be swinging his stick for pokechecks in that position, especially not in OT.
Posted by: Raber | April 22, 2008 10:19 PM
First, congratulations to the Flyers on a gutty performance. Classic series all around.
Second, Devorski was bad enough on that goalie interference call, but he and the other ref did an even worse thing by putting the whistles away for both teams the rest of regulation. If either refs a game in the next round, a pox on on the NHL.
Posted by: geauxcaps | April 22, 2008 10:19 PM
Caps need to improve on defense in a big way.... all night the D pinched in, whiffed on slapshots and than got cought up ice, often having to slash and trip to slow the flyers up, happened twice in OT...second one killed us....
Posted by: chris larry | April 22, 2008 10:20 PM

Root for anybody who plays the Flyers. Go Habs Go.
Posted by: Pete Peeters | April 22, 2008 10:20 PM
There's no use complaining about the officiating. If the Caps had banged home a couple of the loose pucks in front of the net in the third, we'd be talking about the Caps-Pens match up in the next round. But the Caps tightened up, didn't crash, regressed to the cutesy stuff and didn't clear pucks on the PK. So they lost. Nothing to do with the officials. It's a waste of breath to complain about it.
Posted by: Colin | April 22, 2008 10:20 PM
@Chris,
Thanks, and it was a great series. Good luck next round. I type this as a colleague who grew up in Valley Forge reminds me this Caps team will be really, really fun to watch for a long time.

Forget the penalties. Caps played well, but never with the intensity and commitment they showed in the 3rd period last night. Lesson learned.
Great season! Thanks you, Caps. See you in October.
Posted by: Goob | April 22, 2008 10:21 PM
I don't care about the penalty in overtime, I care about the taking out of Huet goal. The penalty in overtime shouldn't have even been an issue. The refs let Huet get abused the whole series and funny the biggest goal of the series is another no call. I knew that goal was it. Just had to wait a gut wrenching 20 minutes to have it confirmed. Refs beat Caps in OT. Now I need to go throw up.
Can't wait for next season.
Posted by: josh | April 22, 2008 10:21 PM
Hell of a comeback in the series, great season (most of it), and awesome seeing these guys mature. Just watch pitt the rest of the playoffs and remember they didn't even go 7 games+ last season...
The future is bright, but the present is painful. Patience will pay off.
Posted by: Scott | April 22, 2008 10:21 PM
The game should have ended 2-1 in regulation. Period. How do you outshoot the Flyers 47-37 but get one less penalty than they do?
We were tackled a couple of times while killing the penalty - no call.
Total B#*%s%it! Typical NHL.
Posted by: pgeagle | April 22, 2008 10:22 PM
I'm so proud of these guys with what they have accomplished, regardless of what they're still too loose on. I'm excited as H E double hockey sticks for next year.
That's the only thing thats keeping me from crying, but its a huge thing.
Let's go Caps!!!

You're going to find it hard to locate someone in this location who will root for the Flyers in the next round. I know for me, a lot of it is because of Briere, who's a midget thug. And that stems back to las season when he was in Buffalo. But kudos to your team for finishing this thing off tonight.
Posted by: Colin | April 22, 2008 10:25 PM
Great Series Caps! OV and group should make it to the finals in 2 years at most! If you could only get some real news coverage outside of the playoffs in DC, you'd have way more attendance when the team has off years. Cripes, Baltimore is even worse. You get more sports about high school girls bowling before they even get to the NHL. Don't take the troll bait. To paraphrase Ron White, "You can fix ugly, you can fix fat, but you can't fix stupid!" This is looking like a good year for an upset for the Cup!!

I'm am Flyers fan and a hockey fan as well...I really like the Caps as a team and where they are headed. I hope this series is a peek at what we all have to look forward to in the coming years.
Posted by: ChrisA | April 22, 2008 10:26 PM
Hahahaha, Marc: "and use cheese whiz on a cheese steak." Yeah, I actually love Philly (if not its sports teams) but I never understood that atrocity. Sarcone's is the best sandwich shop anyway and they wouldn't stoop to freakin' Whiz.
But yeah, I want to see Pittsburgh because I rarely get to on TV here, but I'll root for Calgary if they win tonight. Time for a rabid Canadian town to win the Cup if not a Caps miracle, and perhaps if they could do so it would be retribution for when they lost it to Tampa Bay. I'm pretty sure the people in Tampa aren't even sure if their team is the Lightning or Panthers. That was sad.
I watched pro sports with a non-rooting interest for many years now (part of my job), but I fell for these Caps completely. I'm still stunned.
Posted by: Scrappleseed | April 22, 2008 10:27 PM
Another horribly officiated game. The league really needs to sort out the mess that is occurring around the creases in these playoffs. Right now the refs obviously don't have a clue what constitutes a penalty and which way to call it when the goalies are involved, and the Flyers took full advantage of that multiple times, obviously the worst of them leading to the goal that ended up getting them into OT. Again, what a shame. This Caps team deserved better.

Uncatim: Thanks for the good wishes for the Bears. I'll be there tomorrow night cheering them on. But we're in an 0-3 hole and we have a very inexperienced team. It'll be interesting to see Caps training camp next year when Bourque and Lepisto and some of the prospects come in. Sad right now, but the future looks bright.

It is 4 am here, stayed up tonight just to watch the game and can't say I am disappointed. I was entertained, I was kept wide awake and I can say that this OT loss after a penalty to get booted out of the first round does not hurt as bad as the one against Tampa (which I believe is that the last way to Caps were eliminated) which I watched from the stands. Can say that to lose on the PK in Game 7 OT is not the fate the Caps deserved, stupid mistake. And hats off to Biron, he made good saves and saved the third period for the Flyers. Impressed with the Flyers, except Briere because I like my players to play clean.
Here's an upside though, free agents (say a strong Top 4 defenseman, maybe) should be clamouring to sign with the Caps, the should have all sorts of drive for next season, the will not waste 3 games next year due to inexperience and what I saw of Semin and Bäckström this series was nothing sort of an astounding first NHL-playoff series. (Ovechkin came through in the end and I really wish his pass to Federov had gone in, it would have been so pretty) The Pens choked last year with their young talent, the Caps rose above and almost stole the series back. I strongly believe the Caps will not only run away with the Southeast next year, but also make a strong push at the top of the Eastern Conference.
Great season, great series, great anticipation for the next year. I do feel that a Cup (or at least a Final) is in the cards within the next 3-5 years.
Posted by: theect | April 22, 2008 10:36 PM
Tess -- I know, I follow the Bears pretty close, From Frederick I can get there almost as quick as the Verizon Center. I know they are in trouble, but one can hope. I really dont like the WB-S Pens. Both Borque and Lepisto should be good assets for the Caps and there are other prospects as well. Anyway, good luck.
Posted by: uncatim | April 22, 2008 10:38 PM
Guess if the Kozlov collision was goaltender interference then the Kapinen collision should have been, no doubt. So it's a problem with ref consistency.
Caps ain't going anywhere until they improve the defense. Mostly let down by Morrison and Steckel this series. Mo just got abused on the PK and even strength.
Gonna have to replace Erskine and Jurcina as well. Too slow. Not NHL regulars.
Morrison is a 5/6 Dman.
