Another Accolade for Alex
Moments ago Alex Ovechkin was named - surprise, surprise - a finalist for the Lester B. Pearson Award, which is given to the most outstanding player as voted by his NHLPA peers. The other finalists are Calgary's Jarome Iginla and Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin.
This is the second time Ovechkin has been a Pearson finalist. He was also up for the award as a rookie. The winner will be announced June 12 in Toronto, where A.O. could take home four trophies (he's also up for the Hart, and has already won the Maurice "Rocket" Richard and Art Ross trophies).
I would go on about Ovechkin's terrific season, and how he's deserving of the Pearson and Hart, but I'm pretty sure everyone here already knows.

So that's 2 for sure, 4 max right?
Posted by: Gr88AlexO | May 1, 2008 2:30 PM
What i love most is that i know Ovie would gladly trade the Hart, Art Ross, Rocket, Calder, and Pearson for the Cup
Posted by: DC FURY | May 1, 2008 2:30 PM
DC Fury, agreed. He is straight up amazing.
Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | May 1, 2008 2:35 PM
you are right. I have changed it to could take home four. Forgot about the Richard and Ross trophies since he's already won them.

Tarik,
You are right about "I would go on about Ovechkin's terrific season, and how he's deserving of the Pearson and Hart, but I'm pretty sure everyone here already knows."
But maybe you could write another column for the Post to emphasize that fact to sports fans who don't already know? Again, thank you for your great coverage of the Caps - this season has been memorable in so many ways, and I can't wait for the next one!
Posted by: Mungo | May 1, 2008 2:42 PM
Thanks Tarik.
Posted by: Go Skins Go | May 1, 2008 2:45 PM
how outraged would everyone be if he didnt win all 4?
Posted by: | May 1, 2008 2:55 PM
since he's already won two of them, and from the buzz surrounding the league, i don't see him not getting the pearson. That leaves the hart. Since all the voters said they wouldn't vote for him unless Caps made the playoffs, I don't see how they can't vote for him now. If they don't vote for him, they'll look like complete idiots.
Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | May 1, 2008 3:14 PM
These individual awards are peachy, but I'm hoping that next season there is only one award that matters to players, coaches AND fans. Lord Stanley's Cup.
Posted by: Joe | May 1, 2008 3:17 PM
I think it goes without saying that every player would trade individual accolades for the Cup. However, it is really nice to see so many deserving players and coaches getting recognized this year. I can only imagine how this makes BB feel.
Posted by: Kim | May 1, 2008 3:28 PM
Tarik,
Cannot wait to read about the awards ceremony in June. Something tells me that will be a fun event and should be full of great stories and quotes from our three candidates.
Question. Has there been any discussion about what the players have planned for summer training? I remember that last year a bunch of the Russians went to St Petersberg (I think) for training. I thought I had heard somewhere that they might do that again this summer and that other players might join in. Just curious. Also was wondering if any of our young Canadian contingent were planning on working out together in the summer. Just think it would be cool to see if the chemistry was continuing in the offseason.
Posted by: Kim | May 1, 2008 3:35 PM
Pearson is in the bag since it's voted on by the players and I would think Hart would be as well. Does anyone know the last time someone took home these 4 awards? Lemieux?
Posted by: Moose33 | May 1, 2008 3:45 PM

Posted by: first | May 1, 2008 3:51 PM
I have to admit that I'd be pretty outraged if he didn't win all 4. I'm also gonna be outraged if Boudreau doesn't win the Adams. They're by the far the most deserving of their peers for those awards.
Posted by: DrinkingPartner | May 1, 2008 3:51 PM
Actually, I take that back about the Pearson -- the players themselves see different players differently than the way we do. It's pure opinion based on each player's perception of the players around them.
Still, in a race with Malkin and Iginla, I'd still pick Ovechkin any day of the week. But, say, in a race between Ovechkin and Semin -- that one might be tough, just because of the pure skill Semin has when he wants to show it. But that might be because i like both of them a lot.

Ovie would be the first player to win the hart, pearson, art ross, and rocket richard in the same year (though the rocket richard award was only established nine years ago)!

My guess is AO wins 3, Malkin 1. I think AO wins the MVP but not the players - on the theory of spreading the wealth.
I also think that Guy Carbonneau wins the Adams. Just a hunch considering who's voting on the award. It's broadcasters, mostly Canadian, with a Canadian coach of a Canadian team.
Posted by: Greg S. | May 1, 2008 4:42 PM
Sorry if this is a stupid question...maybe I missed it...but wasn't Quintin Laing nominated for the Masterston (?) for dedication and perserverance. Was that one already awarded to someone, or is that also done at the ceremony in June?
Posted by: tess | May 1, 2008 4:43 PM
I havent tried this but you could go to google and under language preferences click on French and search for Cristobal Huet. That should come up with something.
Good luck.

No offense, but I don't think anyone should be "outraged" if Ovie doesn't win the Pearson or the Hart.
He no doubt is a great INDIVIDUAL player. But people will also (and should) take into consideration how the TEAM has done.
Look at the Penguins - they probably will go to the Stanley Cup final. I truly think that had the Caps gone deeper into the playoffs, Ovie may have a better shot of winning both the Pearson and the Hart.
As it stands right now, I think Malkin is the favorite.
Posted by: Danny | May 1, 2008 4:55 PM
Correct me if I am wrong but isnt BB a Canadian, but he is the coach of "America's new Sweetheart". What a great story.
I am looking for AO to take home all 4 and BB to get the nod for the Adams. I think Backstrom definitely deserves it but Mr. Kane will take that because of the injury to Toews and Stupid Hamlon for his genius coaching methods.
I was just thinking about how long we road Hamlon before he was canned and it irritates me a bit. I could tell in the preseason that the players weren't listening to him. I went to a couple of the practices before the season started and they were doing drills and Nylander and Brash we just shooting pucks at the net while it was going on. Hamlon repeatedly told them to stop. After the third time he skated up to them and yelled. If your players don't listen then he was doomed to fail. The last 2 or 3 weeks of his tenure was a complete joke. Everyone could see that he had his bags packed waiting to go, almost asking. GMGM's job is on the line this offseason and year in my book. No Huet, no deep playoff run, no GMGM.

Posted by: danny | May 1, 2008 4:59 PM
Coach B IS Canadian, but of a US team.
I agree that he's had a great run at it and is deserving of it. I just don't see him winning. There have been several broadcasters talking about IF he had a full season THEN...
There are 30 nominees for Masterton.
Posted by: Greg S. | May 1, 2008 5:00 PM
I love OV! and I love him more because he cares more about the team than about trophies, and because of that IMHO he is the MVP (no matter how the voting goes)! I am so grateful that I get to watch him play game after game because it is historic.
So for the record I could care less really if he wins 4 or 2 or 3 awards this year because in my heart he deserves the cup or something better than the cup if it existed!! LOL
Posted by: | May 1, 2008 5:28 PM
OV deserves the cup?
Then he shouldnt have signed a long contract. They only way he will win one is in a city like detroit
Posted by: pitt | May 1, 2008 5:51 PM
Yes, but how much sweeter the Cup will be when it is won in DC! That would be a true accomplishment and is a true challenge. And to do it with the players whom you consider your brothers. Well, as mastercard says, priceless.
Posted by: RichmondCapsfan | May 1, 2008 6:08 PM
BB is a Canadian coach of an American team, but Guy Carbonneau is a Canadian coach of a French-Canadian team, which could be worse for him, depending on what part of Canada you're voting from. Torontonians might prefer to vote for one of their own than for some lousy separatist!
Posted by: Dinger | May 1, 2008 6:19 PM
About Quinton Laing, yes he was nominated for the Masterton, but that's one for which each team nominates someone, so as Greg pointed out, there are 30 nominees. It is awarded at the same ceremony, but it is usually announced ahead of time, and only the winner actually attends the ceremony. Last year it was Phil Kessel, so he already knew he had won before the ceremony.

Shutout! Love it!
What a wimpy penalty shot by Malkin, though! Jeez! Thought he'd at least TRY to score.
Posted by: Greg S. | May 1, 2008 9:49 PM
Wow ... Ovie's gonna have more hardware than Home Depot. He deserves it all - I hope he cleans up! And I gotta say, if Gabby does not win, I will be so ticked - I can't think of another coach he deserves it more. Heck, I would pay to see the movie version of his first season in the NHL (with BB playing himself, of course).
So the Rangers finally won?!? Yeah!! Let's hope the Habs are next.
Regarding the draft, where to begin?!? I am seriously impressed. That was some of the best reading that I have had since our fateful day. Thanks - I needed that! Sombrero - loved the logo!! Where are the rest of the names/logos?!?
Posted by: Boo! | May 1, 2008 11:41 PM
Well for the love of Johan Franzen! Can anybody stop this guy?? Calling it now: Franzen will take the Conn Smythe.
Posted by: Dinger | May 2, 2008 12:12 AM
Finally Rangers! And Detroit is scary right now. There always seems to be that one player that steps up in the playoffs. Franzen is amazing, but it just looks like the whole team is clicking now.
Oh, it is still so fun to point out the idiot announcers too. Anyone else catch that the Rangers had a secret weapon on their team? During the third period the announcer (not sure which one it was) kept talking about Ranger plays made by Eric Stahl. Guess it takes two Stahl brothers to stop Jordy. I realize that there are so many Stahls to keep straight, but I figured a professional would have read up on which one plays for which team. Sheesh.
Posted by: Kim | May 2, 2008 6:43 AM
As much as I hate Bing and the Pens, I want the Rangers done - NOW. If you haven't noticed Jagr is now leading the league in playoff scoring. So help me, if he gets the Conn Symthe, we'll be on the hook for ANOTHER year of subsidizing that F-er.
One other point: is it just me or is anybody else worried that it's the Russian Hockey Federation, of all organizations, that is responsible for covering Ovie's insurance. I mean this is the outfit that has done all it could to steal Ovie back after signing his rookie contract and preventing/blocking Semin from joining the Caps for at least one season. Didn't both cases go to court? Why should we trust them with Ovie's insurance? Watch out Ted, I hope your legal eagles are ready...

going Deep in the playoffs means nothing for the regular season awards. They get voted on before the playoffs start.

I'm not sure if I should be posting World Championship Fantasy Draft stuff here or on the previous thread. Will the Fun Police come looking for me now?
Just a few thoughts. Firstly, congrats to JSchon for hosting a fantastic draft and being so entertaining yesterday. Someone has missed their calling in life.
Looking at the full rosters I think it will be close. oo7 has some great scoring potential in his forwards, Jeff has some big hitters and I like that JSchon has 6 different nationalities in his 6 forwards. As far as National team picks I think jmu got the most balanced pair, with 1 big nation (Sweden) and 1 of the better second tier nations (Germany). Sombrero probably did the worst in that category as Switzerland and France are the the same group and its probable that 1 will not make the qualifying round and would only end up playing 2 further games.
Also, jmu hasn't picked a single Yank so its obvious that she doesn't just hate American beer :) Girl, you need to try German or Belgian beer!
As for surprises from the draft. I can't believe Selanne went so low but more surprising is that Jeff Halpern didn't get picked at all. Do you all know something I don't? Other notable absentees are Ruutu, Peltonen and Jokinen from Finland and Johansson and Wallin from Sweden. Only for comedy value surely someone should have picked Ales Music from Slovenia. Surely every team should have Music in the room!!
On goalies, I'd have gone for either the starter from Belarus or Italy. Belarus play the Swiss and French in the first round and have a good chance at beating both. The Italians face Russian and the Czechs and their goalie will see a lot of rubber. The way scoring is for goalies, a losing goalie could pick up more points than the winning goalie.
For example, lets say Russia beat Italy 6-0. The Russians fire in 56 shots (6 goals on 56 shots gives the Italian goalie a SV% of 0.892 so realistically could happen) whereas the Russian goalie only faces 16 shots on his way to the shutout. The Russian goalie would get 12.0 points (16x0.25 per save + 3 shutout + 5 win = 12.0) whereas the Italian would get 12.5 points (50x0.25 per save). Well that would have been my justification for picking Gunther Hell anyway! I think the nearest to putting the "Goalie-facing-tons-of-shots" theory in practice is Jeff with Huet and Hirsch.
As for where my support lies. I have to go for JSchon because he picked Janne Niskala. I saw Janne play for Manchester Storm in the old British Superleague. He came on loan for few weeks in the 2000/01 season and was only 19. Although not the biggest D-man (probably why he hasn't stepped up from the AHL) he skates like a dream and he brought the house down when he laid out the bully of the league, Mike McWilliams of Cardiff, with a clean open ice hit. Storm fans loved him and would have loved to keep him. So for that, I say GO TEAM JSCHON GO!!!
Finally, hey Jordan! Where's this logo you were so proud of!

Posted by: Dave UK Caps Fan | May 2, 2008 9:10 AM
Dave, I was attempting to put the "Goalie-facing-tons-of-shots" into place...but I also went with the 2 goalies that I felt are most likely to play every game. We'll see how it works out...
Posted by: Jeff | May 2, 2008 9:19 AM
Yeah my national teams stink, but I am hoping my forwards can compensate for that.
Posted by: Sombrero Guy | May 2, 2008 9:19 AM

I think with Parise, Spezza, Getzlaf and Staal you have a good chance of that.

I was at Glory Days last night watching the game... was with my neighbor and we watched that penalty shot by Malkin... (neighbor is a Caps fan, but isn't into hockey as much as I am)... BUT, he said the funniest thing after Malkin missed on the penalty shot. I guess you had to be there... but basically, he said "MVP..." then busted out laughing. I thought that was the funniest thing I had ever heard. What a joke of a penalty shot... reminded me of Crosby during the Winter Classic. I don't think it should have been a penalty shot anyways... Malkin def embelished the lil push from behind. That is the first time Pitt has lost - maybe they will spiral down now... that would be cool!!!
"MVP... hahahahahahahaha"

More World Championship fun.
Did you know that Great Britain were World Champions in 1936 and runners up in 1937 and 1938. I bet if it wasn't for World War II we would still be a Force. Damm those Nazis!
The most consecutive wins was 9 for the Soviet Union between 63 and 71. In fact, they won 20 of 28 tournaments played between 63 and 90. The last time the US won a World Championship was 1960!
Someone (jmu?) mentioned that Mexico is an IIHF member. Some other surprising IIHF members are Hong Kong, India, Mongolia, South Africa and Thailand! Weird. Not that it would ever happen due to the structure of the IIHF but can you imagine Russia vs Thailand. That would be a massacre!! Ovechkin 7 + 8 = 15 points, Fedorov 100% in the faceoff circle! Varlamov with a 2 save shutout with both saves coming off shots (clearances!) from beyond the red line.

Sergey Mozaykin? Who draft that fool?

Posted by: JSchon | May 2, 2008 10:57 AM
Dave,
I was going to go with Halpern, but Flash looked at me with puppy-dog eyes and I had to pick him. Its the whole, orphans and lost animals thing. Halpy might have been a better choice as he's playing for Torts, but... I had a few other Yanks on my short list, but they were below my Russians or out early(ish).
I think the Asian IIHF teams just had their tourney not too long ago. Chinese Taipei won.
tokyo, don't hit the panic button yet. I don't see the Pens letting another loss happen. But then again, I didn't see Geno choking on that penalty shot, either, so maybe. I doubt the Rangers will make the finals, let alone win, so I think we're safe.
When will the IIHF post final rosters? I'm praying no one gets cut.
I guess if I have to choose team name: I love Grenoble's name, Bruleurs de Loups, but since my team is majority East European: Dynamo Strebor.
