Alert: Snow Showers or Flurries Likely

Dusting to an inch possible by midnight

Latest Mid-Atlantic radar loop, courtesy National Weather Service. Refresh page to update, or click here to expand.

The combination of moisture pluming up from the south and an approaching Arctic cold front is likely to produce some snow in the metro area through midnight-- starting after 4pm. Not a lot of accumulation is likely, but roads could become slick this evening when possible bands of snow move through and temperatures drop through the 30s. The probability of snow is about 60%--some areas may see only flurries if that. The steadiest precipitation will likely be southeast of the metro area where accumulating snow is more likely.

See this morning's post for the cold forecast for the rest of the weekend and early next week.

A near miss!

State College, PA radar shows the enhancement near the front and in the southeast (near us), mid-level moisture pooling over the area from the system off to the south.

It would be pretty neat to get an inch tonight and not have it melt for 2 days!

Posted by: Period | January 19, 2008 3:28 PM

what can we expect in terms of accumulations down in southern maryland?

Posted by: ccwx | January 19, 2008 3:29 PM

Hooray! The GFS was wrong!

Posted by: mcelaNed | January 19, 2008 3:46 PM

Radar has indicated snow over my area most of the afternoon, but of course it has evaporated long before reaching the surface because of very dry air in the lower layer of the column. The front currently is near Charleston to Pittsburgh. During the next several hrs. as it approaches, forcing and instability along the front could generate snowshowers, otherwise many will remain high and dry as residual moisture is swept out to sea.

Precip is sooooo close!! Sheesh!

Posted by: Snowlover | January 19, 2008 4:18 PM

It was snowing lightly in Jefferon County, WV. Wasn't part of the frontal passage since the temps were in the mid-30's but I drove out of it near Brunswick.

Posted by: JT | January 19, 2008 5:11 PM

Snow falling from the clouds but not reaching the ground because the air is so dry. Best chances of seeing snow in the metro area will be between about 7pm and midnight, but it's no sure bet

Posted by: Jason, Capital Weather Gang | January 19, 2008 5:15 PM

will any buldings close such as churches and sunday schools?

Posted by: jobe | January 19, 2008 6:00 PM

A new area of light snow is forming near Charlotesville, VA now. According to the RUC, this is what will move up in the the DC area in the next 2 hours.

I held off getting the car washed today because I figured if I took the time to do it....it would snow and mess up my work. Now I'm gonna have to wait until next weekend. LOL.

At least I can sit and watch the games tomorrow knowing that no matter how cold we are here...they are gonna be a whole lot colder! :-)

What are my chances of seeing a little light snow in Odenton, MD? Thanks!

Posted by: Snowlover | January 19, 2008 6:48 PM

Where is the snow falling right now as of 7:12 pm...not here in Vienna. Go Packers!

Posted by: Jaime, Vienna | January 19, 2008 7:11 PM

I spent the better part of the day waiting to see which would get here first, the cold front or the precip, and I shouldn't be surprised if neither gets here tonight...clearly I have a problem...does anyone know of any weatherholics anonymous meetings in NW DC?

Posted by: GtownBdogg | January 19, 2008 7:11 PM

The latest trends are not our friends, regarding snow from this system. The front now crossing W.Va. seems to be kicking moisture to the east, except for snowshowers in the Mts. Still a chance for a snowshower east of the mts., but not likely.

I am beginning to refocus on other threats during the next 10 days.

Anyone see the Terps game today - - Go Terps!

Posted by: Anonymous | January 19, 2008 7:15 PM

Extremely small "fine" flurries in the Lake Ridge area.

Posted by: arnoldkh | January 19, 2008 7:40 PM

where is the lake ridge area?

Posted by: ccws | January 19, 2008 7:40 PM

Lake Ridge - west of Woodbridge; north of Occoquan - in PWC.

Posted by: Anonymous | January 19, 2008 7:54 PM

I watched the Terps game today! How bout them Terps? I bet UNC was asking the same question

Posted by: Kenny | January 19, 2008 7:55 PM

nice batch of precip developing over central va. should bring some snow our way

Posted by: ccwx | January 19, 2008 8:38 PM

when is the next chance for a mojor snowstorm (4+ inches)

Posted by: sam | January 19, 2008 9:02 PM

9:30 PM......good radar echoes at mid-levels east of the Blue Ridge, but obviously way too dry at the surface for any precip N and W of the city to reach the ground. Could still see a little with the front later tonight, but still not likely with the low surface dew points.

weather channel is reporting moderate snow in potomac but its not even snowing.. whats up with that??????

Posted by: skins fan | January 19, 2008 9:34 PM

Posted by: snowlover | January 19, 2008 9:41 PM

Wx channel is claiming it is snowing here......

I wonder where they are seeing it? ;-) I've got nada....

Posted by: Kim in Manassas | January 19, 2008 9:47 PM

Lots of verga here in Arnold....if only it would fall...

Posted by: arnoldkh | January 19, 2008 9:48 PM

kim: Wx says the same thing about Potomac

Posted by: skins fan | January 19, 2008 9:49 PM

It is snowing lightly in Lake Ridge but whatever is falling seems to be sticking - PWC.

Posted by: Anonymous | January 19, 2008 9:53 PM

Virga not verga..haha...anyway I'm sitting at 32F with humidity at 80%...I have a feeling I won't see a flake...looked good for 15 minutes...

Posted by: arnoldkh | January 19, 2008 10:00 PM

And with that I have flurries currently :)

Posted by: arnoldkh | January 19, 2008 10:03 PM

Seems like the bulk of the precip is just to the east of Int. 95 - heading east. Seems like this could be it for the majority of the DC area.

Your new site is not friendly to pda, blackberry, or wap browsers.

Posted by: na | January 20, 2008 12:43 AM

Well, I would normally call this forecast a bust, but since from the get go, we all knew this storm would only appear in the wishcast, I can't call it a bust.

Nice attempt, overall, I'm not too disapointed.

na: I don't know if I'd want to see it as friendly to mobile device users. This site's intention isn't to give people a temperature and a weather graphic. It's an in-depth site in which commentary and possibility is valued far over minimalism and speed. Obviously, this isn't going to cater well to pda users.

(I know you're probably talking about formatting or script issues. Just my two cents.)

Thru Sat. 28 out last 31 days above average. Was in Richmond area this afternoon visiting my lady friend & it snowed about 9 hrs., with about 1/2" accum.

Posted by: VaTechBob. | January 20, 2008 1:20 AM

Go Terps. Go Jayhawks. Ain't got much. Its cold out there.

Posted by: GV in CP | January 20, 2008 2:18 AM

Havoc-- Yes, a borderline bust. Some flurries were around and about, especially to the south and southeast. Of course, I didn't say accumulations were a sure thing but was probably too bullish. The models were trending wetter and the radar looked great. The problem was the dry air which ate everything up.
