Forecast: Record Warmth Double Threat
Much colder late in the weekend
Record high temperatures will be in jeopardy both today and tomorrow. The official record high for today (at Reagan National Airport) is 70 degrees, last achieved in 1991 and for Wednesday, 69 degrees, set in 1938. A front zips through tomorrow cooling us off for the rest of the week. Bitter cold may return the second half of the weekend.
TODAY
AM fog, PM sun. Near 70. We will start off with some patchy fog and possibly some scattered drizzle (30%). However, during the day a warm front over our area will move north into Pennsylvania, allowing clearing skies and a very warm southwesterly flow this afternoon. Afternoon highs will reach the upper 60s, and possibly low 70s if it can get sunny enough. Any shower activity should remain well to our north and west, but a scattered afternoon shower can't be ruled out (20%). Overnight will be partly to mostly cloudy and very mild with lows only dipping to the low to mid 50s.
Showers, windy. Near 70. Ahead of an approaching cold front, it will again be quite mild with temperatures making it well into the 60s. After a chance of some morning showers (20%), look for rain (80%) associated with the cold front in the afternoon. Even a thunderstorm cannot be ruled out and rain could become moderate to heavy late in the afternoon into the evening. It will be very windy with temperatures gradually falling as we head through the evening. Overnight it will be windy and much cooler with any rain tapering off after midnight and lows dropping to the upper 30s to low 40s.

THURSDAY
Sunny, breezy. Near 50. High pressure will attempt to develop over the region on Thursday. It will be mostly sunny with afternoon highs slightly above normal in the upper 40s. Overnight, it will be partly cloudy and more February-like with lows in the upper 20s to low 30s.
A LOOK AHEAD
On Friday we'll have variably cloudy skies and highs near 50. Temperatures will trend cooler over the weekend. A disturbance swinging through the area will provide a chance of rain or snow showers, with highs in the low 40s. A powerful cold front behind the disturbance will usher in Arctic air for Sunday with subfreezing highs possible.
