Forecast: Temperatures and Sunshine Increase

We welcome a good deal of sunshine over the next two days after two days of overcast. High temperatures, which have been slowly rising since Friday, will continue their ascent through Tuesday.

TODAY

Sunny a.m., partly cloudy p.m. 43-46. A cold, clear dawn (in the 20s) will transition to a sunny, seasonably chilly midday. High clouds will increase during the afternoon, with temperatures topping out in the mid 40s.

Partly to mostly cloudy skies overnight, with a sprinkle possible in the evening -- especially south of DC. Lows will be in the upper 20s to low 30s.

MONDAY

Mostly sunny. 50-55. It won't be like last Monday's 74 degrees, but 54 isn't bad for late February. High pressure overhead means lots of sunshine and not much in the way of wind.

Overnight, clouds increase with a bit of rain possible by morning (possibly mixing with sleet/freezing rain in the far northern and western suburbs). Lows will be in the mid to upper 30s (except low 30s outlying suburbs).

A LOOK AHEAD

Showers and perhaps a thunderstorm are likely Tuesday as a powerful cold front moves through the region. Temperatures will be mild ahead of the front, with highs in the mid 50s -- but they will fall sharply at night in the front's wake. Wednesday through Friday will be dry but cold, with high temperatures near 40 and lows in the 20s.

Jason, will Tuesday be a complete washout or just intermittent showers?

Parts of southwest Va. and southern W.Va. are likely to receive 1-2 inches of snow this afternoon and evening. Some of us in central and nothern Va. may also receive a light mix, as a weak system scoots to our south.

David-- I think we'll have more intermittent shower activity Tuesday than all-day rain. Amounts should be around 0.25", but locally heavier in spots.

Augusta-- Yep. Little disturbance to the south rippling through could give central VA some light snow or a mix overnight. Being on the northern edge, I'm calling for a sprinkle here...but will need to keep watching. Models are trending north it seems, so I may need to alert later on.

Thanks, Jason. At least it won't be snow for Tuesday!

The radar looks like some precipitation will certainly hit the area.

Is that virga or is it actually gonna rain within the hour?

The clouds are VERY dark to my south right now. Confusing because that doesn't look like very heavy precip on the radar.

So, guys, have we seen our last chance for snow this year??

People, brace yourselves. it's ..... snowing! Ever so lightly, but it's definitely the white stuff :) and it's 37 degrees and dropping ....

I counted 2 flakes outside. Woo. LOL.

Not even raining, must be mostly virga on the radar.

I received a period of light snow between 9:30-10:30. Only flurries now. The snow melted on contact with a temp. of 34F.
