Forecast: March Winds to Roar

The first day of March will live up to its windy reputation. Blustery winds from the northwest will gust as high as 30mph. But these winds will diminish somewhat by tomorrow which will feature sunshine and temperatures climbing above 50.

TODAY

Windy and cool. Mid to upper 40s. Early morning clouds along with a stray flurry or two will gradually give way to considerable sunshine by afternoon. Air temperatures will likely reach the high 40s but winds from the northwest at 20-25mph will make it feel like the 30s. Overnight, winds will slowly slacken with lows in the upper 20s downtown and low to mid 20s in the suburbs.

Keep reading for the forecast for Sunday and early next week...

SUNDAY

Sunny. 52-55. Cloudless skies will rule thanks to high pressure sitting smack-dab on top of us. All of the sunshine will boost temperatures up and over 50 with considerably less wind than today. Clear and not as cold overnight with lows near 35 downtown and around freezing in the suburbs.

A LOOK AHEAD

You might consider extending your weekend into Monday which will have mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the low 60s. A strong storm will pass to our west Tuesday with rain developing, heavy at times, and possible thunderstorms. Stormy weather will continue into Tuesday night, when the rain may briefly change to snow in outlying north and west suburbs before ending. Skies will gradually clear Wednesday, with highs near 50.

Are you guys still using the same weather bar as before (from the old web site)? I see Tue has a low of 41 and a high of 61 but with ice on the picture. What gives?

Mot: That isn't ice. They're supposed to be rain drops. The ice on the At-A-Glance look like little blue tornadoes.

Oh, and happy first day of meteorological spring, everyone!

Snow, were are you? Spring, we dont need you yet.

In like a lion, out like a lamb....does gusty wind count?

Hate to say it, but I need to fast forward to spring. I'll start the process of rewiring my boat today, and will follow that by painting her hull in early April. I'd rather have a nice calm spring, starting today!

Just noticed flurries here at 10:30 as the clouds break up.

Henry M at Accuweather keeps on beating the drum regarding a potential "Big Daddy" up the east coast next Friday into Saturday. Hope I didn't jinx this scenario by bringing it up!

Some light snow flurries passed by Glover Park about 30 minutes as well. The last flakes we see this season?? ;) Hopefully!

Snow flurries here in Loudoun as well, ended a while ago. Nice to see winter's last gasp out the window. (I've given up on snow for this season)

Mot -- We just did a post on our new At a Glance a few days ago -- http://blog.washingtonpost.com/capitalweathergang/2008/02/at_a_glance_the_scoop_on_forec.html ... I wasn't on the site at the time you commented earlier. It is possible there may have been a temporary erroneous ice icon. We're working out a few kinks with the National Weather Service whereby every once in awhile we briefly show an incorrect icon.

Euro continues to be far west with the next system, chances for any frozen seem to be dwindling. Next weekend looks cold and dry on the Euro.. nothing really gets going on the front as it passes out to sea.

I have been trying to find out why March is such a windy month. Seems like on March 1st the winds start and continue all month.
