Forecast: Final Flakes to be Flaky

Gradually warmer this week

The last flakes of our snow-challenged season may fall today. Of course, it only figures that any snow will be spotty, intermittent and won't amount to anything. For those of us who just want it to get warmer, the good news is that more characteristic early spring weather will settle in tomorrow and should stick around through the end of the week.

TODAY

Variably cloudy, flurries, sleet and showers. 45-50. Today will be similar to Saturday when sky conditions alternated between sunny and cloudy with intermittent bouts of light mixed precipitation. North and west of town, precipitation will mainly be snow and sleet. In the District and points south and east, snow flurries in the morning will probably transition to sleet and rain in the afternoon. As temperatures will be above freezing (into the 40s) and the precipitation very light, no snow accumulation is expected.

Overnight, skies will clear with lows in the mid 30s downtown to near 30 in the colder suburbs.

TOMORROW

Sunny and warmer. Mid 50s. Temperatures will finally break through the resistance at 50 degrees, likely climbing into the mid 50s as the cold airmass retreats. Conditions will be sunny and dry with high pressure overhead.

Clouds increase at night as a cold front approaches. Low temperatures should be near 40.

Keep reading for the forecast for the rest of the week...

WEDNESDAY

Mostly cloudy, slight chance of showers. Near 60. A nearby cold front will produce quite a bit in the way of cloudy cover, although there will be intervals of sunshine as well. Most of the day should remain dry, although a shower or two can't be ruled out as the front passes, especially north of town. Temperatures will warm to near 60.

Skies clear overnight, with lows in the mid 30s to near 40.

A LOOK AHEAD

High temperatures drop a notch Thursday back into the mid 50s under partly sunny skies. A warm front, though, will move through the area setting the stage for a mild Friday and Saturday. Friday should be mostly sunny and delightful with highs temperatures in the mid 60s. We should have mid 60s again on Saturday, but showers are possible late as a cold front passes by. Behind the front, Sunday will be cooler but dry, with highs in the mid to upper 50s.

It snowed in the mountains last night. See this image from Luray, Va. The chances for flakes here are pretty low (or as I said "flaky"), but some showers of rain and/or sleet could pop up this afternoon.

A few flakes (a very few) hit my windshield driving through Old Town this morning (around 7:50am). Time for spring :)

Don't count out conversational snow just yet. We could get some in April, especially if the snowpack to our north and west continues to keep the Canadian air masses raw. I postred something to this effect earlier.

Canadian lightning data for this morning: Isolated strikes along a front offshore from FL north to the Delmarva. All inland areas north of Mexico are clear of strikes.

Sterling and others are hinting at some rain from Wednesday through some time this weekend.

Not counting them out, just saying I'm not excited about them anymore.

I adore the weather we're having now, so here's one happy camper. Don't want snow, definitely don't want high temps. The N breeze brings in really good air. I had a terrific hike in the hills this weekend and would be doing that today if I could.
