Forecast: Cool Air Keeps Coming
Showers, storms likely today
Talk about a big change: the high temperature dropped from 84 Saturday to 59 yesterday (at Reagan National Airport). Count on the cool weather to stay with us for several more days. Accompanied by showers and storms, a reinforcing shot of cool air arrives today. This fresh delivery of cool air will hold temperatures 10 degrees or so below average tomorrow and Wednesday. On a warmer note, 70 degree temperatures likely make a return Thursday with 80 degrees possible by Friday and Saturday.
Showers and storms likely. 63-67. We'll awake to cool and cloudy conditions, along with a few showers. The rain may break during the late morning and midday as winds from the south help boost temperatures into the 60s. For the commute home, a powerful cold front will move through the area, triggering showers and thunderstorms across the area. Some of these storms could produce strong winds, especially along I-95 and to the east.
After dark, the storm threat wanes, but it will turn chilly and clouds will stick around. Low temperatures will drop to near 40 in the colder suburbs and into the mid 40s downtown.
Confidence: Medium-High
TOMORROW
Variably cloudy with isolated showers. 55-60. An upper level disturbance will ripple through with a 40% chance of some rain showers. The rain showers will be spotty and intermittent with intervals of sunshine when it's not raining. Temperatures will be chilly with highs probably only in the 50s to near 60.
Partly cloudy and cool overnight, with lows 36-41 (suburbs-downtown). Frost is a possibility in some of the colder outlying areas.
Keep reading for the forecast for the rest of the week. Check in after 11 a.m. for Andrew Freedman's latest contribution.
A LOOK AHEAD
Cool high pressure dominates the region Wednesday, with high temperatures only reaching the low to mid 60s. Confidence: Medium-High
Temperatures should start heading back up to 70 or higher Thursday although it will depend on the passage of a warm front. If it gets stuck to our south and winds remain from the north in the region (1/3 chance), temps may hold in the 60s. Confidence: Medium
Confidence is higher that we'll be into the warm air Friday. Temperatures are likely to reach well into the 70s and possibly to 80. Confidence: Medium-High
Warm sunshine continues through much of Saturday, before a cold front brings a slight chance of showers and storms late. Highs should be near 80. Confidence: Medium
On Sunday, high pressure gradually builds in behind Saturday's front with a mix of clouds and sun and afternoon temperatures climbing towards 70. Confidence: Medium

Figures we now have a chance of a frost/freeze this week after I spent $300.00 on flowers for the yard. Should have gone with the conventional wisdom and held off until Memorial Day weekend. Dagnabit!!!!

Isn't it MIGHTY UNUSUAL to be getting thunderstorms, downpours, and possible severe weather with such RAW conditions outside??? The only thing I can think of is some sort of "instability sandwich" with a thick layer of warm humid air between this mess of crud we have at the surface and a much colder flow aloft. It's something I can remember back home with "Upper Great Lakes occlusions" around Madison, Milwaukee and the Twin Cities, but it rarely happens here in the Mid-Atlantic area. Generally we need some nice soupy heat and humidity in order to set up the severe weather around here.
