Forecast: Heavy Rain Tonight Into Tomorrow

Saturday forecast uncertain; more rain by late Sunday

A low-pressure area and associated cold front will provide plenty of clouds and sometimes rainy conditions over the next 48 hours -- when up to 2" of rain may fall -- with the bulk of the precipitation falling overnight tonight into tomorrow morning. Then, after an uncertain Saturday, another area of low pressure could bring more clouds and rain for the latter part of Sunday into Monday.

TODAY

Mostly cloudy. Scattered showers. Mid 70s. The day will feature mostly cloudy skies and more humidity than yesterday. Scattered showers, and perhaps an isolated thunderstorm, are possible throughout the day and evening. Even still, high temperatures should reach the mid 70s in most places.

Expect pouring rain and a few rumbles of thunder during the overnight hours, with the heaviest rain falling early Friday morning. We'll have mild overnight lows near 60.

Confidence: Medium-High

TOMORROW

Overcast and showery. Near 70. You'll wake up to overcast skies and periods of moderate to heavy rain Friday morning. As the day progresses, especially into the mid and late afternoon, precipitation should taper in intensity and coverage. Plan on slightly cooler afternoon highs near 70.

Partly to mostly cloudy skies will linger Friday evening, but it should be dry in most spots by this time. Expect cooler overnight lows from 50-55.

Keep reading for the forecast through the weekend into the start of next week. See UnitedCast for the forecast for tonight's D.C. United game.

A LOOK AHEAD

Saturday had been looking mostly sunny with highs near 70. But now there's some question as to whether clouds, a chance of light rain and cooler temperatures may enter the picture. Stay tuned. Confidence: Low-Medium

You'll likely wake up to at least some partial sunshine on Sunday morning, but clouds will quickly increase as the day wears on as highs head for near 70. Scattered showers are possible from the early afternoon onward, and are likely to increase in coverage and intensity Sunday evening and overnight. Confidence: Medium

Mostly cloudy skies are a good bet on Monday with some lingering showers possible, especially during the first half of the day. Expect cooler high temperatures in the mid 60s. Confidence: Medium

All right, let's see if the Captain Tawley's Creeping Crack Cure that I used to seal up the windows on my boat actually stops rain from leaking into the cabin.

Yes, I chose to use that product because of it's name. :-)

Temps were higher than predicted last night and obviously the air is humid. Tonight are the temperatures going to be like last night, a little cooler, or a little warmer? Thanks.

Hey all,

I don't suppose I can get a somewhat long range forecast on what the weather may be like on Saturday May 17th??

I've got a retirement celebration I'm planning and am hoping to make it an outdoor affair and I'm wondering how risky that might be with the rains that are coming through.

Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks...

While I am sure we will hear the usual litany of complaints, I think this rain is a very good thing. While people keep declaring the drought over, I still notice very dry soil conditions. I think soils were really hurt by the now several year period of boom and bust, and need more soaking rains to recover. I'm no expert, but it is just what I have seen around my yard; this week-long dry spell is already turning things brown, which normally wouldn't happen.

So while it is a tragedy that the rain might ruin a dance or errand run, I think we need it.

Uncle Dak -- Actually, last night's temps weren't too far off from where we thought they'd be ... earlier in the day we had been saying anywhere from the low to mid 60s, and ended up being 66 (DCA) and 64 (IAD). Probably about the same tonight, maybe a couple degrees cooler because of the rain.

Haymarket Dave: Nine days is a little beyond the range within which we feel comfortable forecasting. Ask us again Sunday or Monday.

Any updates regarding the situation on Saturday? Trying to host a BBQ; any new info would be appreciated.

Thanks

I'm kinda leaning toward the cloudier and maybe some light rain scenario. Of course, Camden will have the latest in his forecast tomorrow morning.
