Isolated Evening Showers, Thunderstorms
Small hail, gusty winds a threat
Warm afternoon sunshine, combined with cold air aloft and some upper-level energy, provided enough instability to spark some showers and thunderstorms that are moving through this evening. Some spots will see little or no rain, but some places may experience brief strong storms. Heavier showers or storms could produce small hail and gusty winds. The storm threat should diminish after sunset.
Tonight: Isolated showers and thunderstorms during the early evening, some of which could be briefly strong, should diminish after sunset. After that, we're in for a partly cloudy and cool night, as temperatures drop into the mid 50s in the suburbs and around 60 in D.C. for overnight lows. Winds will be light throughout much of the night.
Tomorrow: On Thursday, we will still be under the influence of a pesky low pressure system stuck in Canada. This means morning sunshine will likely give way to at least partly cloudy afternoon skies. Temperatures may be a little warmer tomorrow than today, as highs reach the upper 70s to low 80s. There is a slight risk of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm, but overall coverage should be less than today.
When will warmer temperatures and humidity return? See Dan's full forecast.

So happy for these cool nights.

Here comes a little cell; should be hitting within the next 15, 30 minutes. What worries/excites me is that the storm seems to get more and more powerful as it nears our area.

Thunder, lightening and light rain in Merrifield now...it moved in rapidly from the west. I can still see sunshine and blue sky in all other directions.

thunder and lightning with a bright sun in the sky...pretty odd out there

ARGH! VERY near by lightening!

Rain started in upper NW... wind quickly coming up, some thunder as well.

I can see rain and sunshine from my west-facing windows - but no rain from my south-facing windows! This is a tiny but nasty little storm. Duck, mcleaNed, I think it's headed your way.

We had very heavy rain that occurred with bright sunshine. I photographed a rainbow that was not in the sky, but in front of the nearby woods. I'm not sure if there is a term for that type of rainbow.

Strongest part of the storm near DC seems to be headed toward Alexandria area.

VERY strange... sunny out, yet I just heard a lightning bolt that couldn't have been more than a mile away. Heavy rain drawing to a close.

Annandale. Horrific cracking thunder and enough rain already. My dandelions are taller than my azaleas. What? The rain stopped? After just 30 seconds? Because I said 'enough'? Hah! Doubling back to pounce, maybe....

Annandale. Wow. Clear, sunny skies like a bolt out of the gray.

Alexandria getting nailed with heavy rain and thunder/lightening. Also sunny outside so I'm going to go rainbow hunting.....
This is like the 5th time over 15 some days we're getting a thunderstorm. Getting absurd.

Some thunder and light rain dribbled through here, exiting already.

Just got home via the IL of the WWB. Massive downpour/sunshower from VA landfall to Telegraph Road exit. Hard to see. It sounded like there might have been some hail.
It's clear now.

Almost formed a double rainbow! Little to pale to get a good photograph.
Posted by: alexandria | June 18, 2008 6:36 PM
Well the front page of the Washington Post site now has a great photo of the double rainbow. Too bad it was so obscured in Alexandria.

Very sharp thunderstorm around 6PM in Baileys Crossroads area. Made me turn off computer & A/C. Back online. Tony Pann still has echoes west of us on Channel 9's radar. Chiefly rain; no hail recorded. Some rain fell while sun shining. Around 0.1 inch fell, less than in severe storms yesterday and earlier this month.

Thanks for the beautiful photo of rainbows, WaPo.

Okay, I am officially sick of these storms. Enough is enough. The chocolate supply can't hold out forever. This weather pattern can end anytime now.

Some of these storms today have had unusual (for us) characteristics, such as the relatively high bases that you much more often see out West. That, and the lack of really heavy rain with them, can be attributed to the low dewpoints today.....the air must rise higher to be consensed into clouds than on a steamy, humid day, and the ceiling is higher. The first storm that passed over me in Vienna also, like the poster from McLean commented on, had sharp cloud-to-ground lightning on its very back edge.....as the sun started to peek out.

I'm with ep....enough is enough, the chocolate isn't going to last.

You know, if this weather keeps up, and I start a business selling chocolate, I'd become rich! Who's with me? :P
We didn't get a drop here. It go dark in the distance, and I saw an awesome rainbow over 95 near Borders and Old Country Buffet and Walmart and all that fun stuff in Woodbridge along the PW Parkway, and you could see the sheets of rain falling from the towering black clouds. I wish I had had my camera. Oh well.

Buy more chocolate!
:-)
Posted by: Murre | June 18, 2008 9:22 PM
@weatherdudeVA (Lake Ridge): Two questions -
1) Will you sell the Icelandic stuff?
2) Will you deliver DURING storms?
:-)
@Murre: It is on the list. I have enough to get me through tonight, so long as none of these storms develop any rotation.
:-)

I've never heard of chocolate from Iceland, but I guess I could have it arranged? And I will deliver during storms if you're willing come outside to get the deliveries :^P

Ugh, the constant clouds then sun then clouds then sun made it look like there was a giant strobe light outside my window today - it was starting to make me feel ill.
I'm hoping for a thunderstorm, minus the severity. Are the weather gods listening? ;)
