Forecast: Two More Days of Scorching Heat
Some relief arrives Wednesday
*Heat Advisory in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday*
I'm running out of adjectives to describe the hot weather so it's a good thing the heat wave only has about 36 hours left. Although we're about to get a reprieve, we all know ridiculously hot weather will eventually return. So rest assured the Capital Weather Gang will have to recycle words like scorching, roasting, stifling, brutal, oppressive, offensive, extreme, scorching, boiling, sizzling, steamy, sultry, blistering, sweltering, torrid, searing, muggy, and sticky. If I'm missing any good ones, leave a comment. Extra points for creativity.
TODAY (MONDAY)
Darn Hot. 95-99. Today will be just like the last two. If your morning commute involves walking any considerable distance, you'll need to freshen up or even shower by the time you arrive at the office. Even early this morning, temperatures will be around 80 downtown not to mention the humidity. By afternoon, temperatures will top out in the mid to upper 90s with the heat index up over 100 again. An isolated thunderstorm can't be ruled out, but I think storms are pretty unlikely.
Overnight, more mugginess. Lows in the upper 70s downtown, mid 70s in the suburbs.
Confidence: High
Keep reading for the forecast through the week. See NatCast for the sticky outlook for tonight's game.
TOMORROW (TUESDAY)
Hot, p.m. storms possible. 94-98. Tomorrow marks the last day of our early season heat wave. It will be similar in character to the previous three, with temperatures in the mid 90s. Upper 90s can't be ruled out, but afternoon clouds and possible thunderstorms should hold down temps a bit. These storms could be strong, with the potential for gusty winds and very heavy rain.
Overnight, storms are possible through midnight or so, then it will be partly cloudy with lows 70-75.
On Wednesday, temperatures should be about 6-10 degrees cooler than the previous four days due to the passage of a cold front Tuesday night, with highs reaching the upper 80s under partly sunny skies. Confidence: Medium-High
High pressure builds in from the north Thursday and Friday. This should help filter in even cooler air with highs both days in the low to mid 80s with comfortable humidity levels. Confidence: Medium-High
We may have winds come out of the south Saturday, making it a bit warmer and more humid. But another cold front could approach late bringing the threat of storms. Highs Saturday should be in the mid to upper 80s. Confidence: Medium
Right now, Sunday looks to be partly sunny, with highs 80-85. Confidence: Medium

The good news - September is right around the corner. Oh wait, it's not really August yet, is it? Ugh! This is going to be a rough summer.
Posted by: BringOnFall | June 9, 2008 8:11 AM
SNOW! Does that make anyone feel better?
Ohhh wait...
We really don't get snow anymore.

I can't get enough of this heat. I'm loving it. Here's hoping for at least 3 more good, baking months.
Yikes, I'm dreading the thought of winter already.

Does anyone know why the Philly NWS office is much more predisposed to declare Heat Advisories and Excessive Heat Warnings? Neither Washington nor New York are as quick on the trigger when it comes to hot weather advisories, even though the metropolitan areas have similar weather.

I had the pleasure of spending Friday and Saturday as an official at a rowing regatta in South Jersey and I can attest that it was HOT! Tough to find a shady spot when you are in the middle of the Cooper River and the heat was magnified as I sat in my aluminum john boat. Fortunately, the event organizers accelerated the schedule and we managed to wrap the event about 90 minutes earlier than the projected 3:30pm finish.

How about "energy eviscerating" or "soul sapping"? BTW, these terms also work well to describe most corporate job situations. ;-)

Don't forget in just under a month, we can use "Hot as a Firecracker!"
And if there is a chance of thunderstorms -
"Mother Nature will be offering her own fireworks tonight!"

GhettoBurbs: Philly had a history of losing a lot of people during heat waves (in the 80s and early 90s) ... and was once called the "heat death capital of the world". they've since taken a lot of preventative measures to avoid heat related deaths (successfully) which includes a heat health watch/warning system that uses somewhat different criteria for issuing heat-related advisories/warnings. Click here for more info.

Does anyone else remember the line from the Broadway musical/movie "1776" ... 'and it's hot as hell, in Philadelphia'?
Posted by: Murre | June 9, 2008 9:35 AM
I think a couple of lines from Biloxi Blues covers this kind of heat:
"This is like Africa hot." and
"Man, it's hot, Africa hot, Tarzan couldn't take this kind of hot."

I believe my roommate summed up the weather in the last few days quite aptly:
"Eeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww."

I love to play on dictionary.com, so here goes:
definition of hot Roget's Thesaurus: marked by much heat.
Adjectives: febrile, febrific (this heat is just febrific -- use when trying to con people that it is not so bad).

Heat advisory extended till tomorrow at 8 p.m.

We compare hot to Tulum, Mexico (hottest place my family has ever been...at least in our minds...LOL)...if it is like this weekend, it is "Tulum Hot".
As for other options:
febrific, febrile, feverish, hectic, and my favorite....pyretic

Does anyone know what time or range of the day would be the hottest? I know that people say get your exercise in the morning and night, but that's not realistic for me.
Posted by: Emiliano | June 9, 2008 11:04 AM
its as hot as a two dollar pistol

You can always keep warm with clothes, when frolicing in beautiful snow under brilliant skies, whereas there's no removing your hottest layer, skin, when wilting in ugly haze.

It's so nice to be able to grill outside without having to actually use a grill. :) My poor A/C couldn't get our house below 80 degrees yesterday, but it felt so much cooler than that. How bad are the storms predicted for tomorrow? Channel 4 was hyping them up to be pretty awful. Hope everyone stays safe in this heat and during the storms tomorrow.

Letterman, a few years ago: "It's so hot outside, fat guys are making their own gravy."

I like to click on this when it gets really hot. Current Condition, Amundsen-Scott Station, South Pole: -59 F, blowing snow.

Can't forget the classics from Good Morning Vietnam:
"Basically, it's hotter than a snake's *ss in a wagon rut."
And
"What's the weather like out there? It's hot. Damn hot! Real hot! Hottest things is my shorts. I could cook things in it. A little crotch pot cooking."
Posted by: Parker | June 9, 2008 11:55 AM
It feels like an armpit outside.

Your [a href="http://www.weather.gov/pa/fstories/2005/0105/fs11jan2005a.php"]link[/a] is "not accessible for security reasons." Do you have special privileged access on the NWS site?

It is well known that when the temperature goes up, so does the crime rate. I can just see Mom going to her criminal son: "Don't forget to wear your sunscreen when you go to knock over the convenience store, dear."
However, less known is that as the temperature continues to rise, the crime rate goes down. No one has the energy. You don't even want to wear a thong over your face to commit robbery (http://www.suntimes.com/news/nation/995647,CST-NWS-thong09.article"
So, I hereby give you "too hot to commit a crime."

It was 82 when I left the house at 630 this morning. Luckily, tomorrow is my last day of school (I'm officially a senior after 2:00PM tomorrow, woohoo!!!), so I can stay inside and sleep off the rest of the summer. I can't stand hot weather!
I heard today was a Code Red air quality day?
