Recap: Hot But Not Historic

No doubt it was hot today, but temperatures fell shy of records for the date. The highs at the local observing stations were as follows:

Reagan National Airport: 96 (record 102 from 1874)
Dulles International Airport: 94 (record 96 from 1999)
Baltimore/Washington International Airport: 94 (record 98 from 1933)

One more day of heat tomorrow and the chance for storms, then we start to cool down.

When the NWS issues a general warning such as a heat warning or a heavy snow warning that covers the entire area why in the world do they include every single little dinky incorporated town in every county? In the latest endless flood of high heat warnings, issued every few hours it seems, I see the same towns over and over. "Gaithersburg, Manassas Park, Takoma Park, Rockville, Falls Church, Charles Town, St. Mary's City", and on and on. Why don't they just list the counties affected or do people not know where they live?

JT: I think they do that because they're independent cities? I know that's why they list manassas & manassas park.

Ummm,

"Baltimore/Washington International Airport: 98 (record 97 from 1933)"

How could BWI not have made a record today when the high was 98 and the record was 97?

;P

You seem to have a typo in there for BWI, unless you were mistaken about not setting any records today.

You missed a record (well assuming we don't drop 10 degrees in the next three hours). Reagan set a record high minimum temperature today at 77 degrees, breaking the old record of 76 set in 1981.

Thanks, Ardona. You're right. There was a typo

Chris-- Good point on the record high min

Today's record high of 102 in 1874 is the all time record for June. I think the high at DCA today was 96, unless it happened after the daily climate report.

I agree about the listing of every city. Also, the issuing of the heat warnings every couple of hours. It's gonna be hot all day, unless the temperature drops, we know there is a warning. They should just issue it for all day and then cancel if a miracle occurs.

Our "high so far" XML file was spitting out 97 as the high at DCA, but the daily climate report gives 96 -- so I'll change it back to that

Yes Weatherdude I realize that they are "independent cities" which means that they are incorporated. But why bother mentioning them at all when the counties are listed such as, "Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, Montgomery, Frederick, Howard, Carroll, Prince Georges, etc". My question to the bosses was why do they list the incorporated cities that are located within these counties?
