Update: Not Totally in the Clear

Radar: Latest mid-Atlantic radar loop from the National Weather Service. Click here to expand. Refresh page to update. What is UTC?

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch from earlier has expired but we may not be entirely out of the woods. Some strong storms are currently affecting West Virginia and a few of these storms could hold together and affect the metro region between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. If storms threaten, we'll post another update.

The National Weather Service assembled quite a list of severe weather and damage reports from the storms late this afternoon. A few of the highlights include:

*Hail was widespread in central Virginia, particularly Orange and Greene counties, and covered the ground in many areas. Six inches! of hail accumulated just north of Ruckersville, Va. Hail stones as large as 4.25" in diameter (that's the size of grapefruits!) were observed which reportedly damaged an SUV.

*Snow plows were called out to clear hail on parts of Rt. 29. See hail photos from NBC29 in Charlottesville, Va.

*Wind gusts of 60-65 mph at Nationals Park, Andrews Air Force base, and T.C. Williams High School (in Alexandria, VA)

See my full forecast for the outlook through the weekend.

I just saw those storms on radar. They seemed to sprout out of nowhere.

What? Wait! This can't happen - I just finished up the last of my chocolate!!! :=(

Oh no, I'm almost out of chocolate too.

No more rain! No more rain!

No more rain! C'mon, everybody...maybe we can make it stop.

Okay okay...No more rain!

If we can't wish for more rain, does that mean we have to wish for...SNOW???

;)

And if the weather radio goes off after I hop into bed, I'm going to be one very angry geek...

I'll take the rain...it keeps the river and streams flowing which makes the fish happy, and it keeps the soil moist which makes my garden happy...plus I like watching lightening.

After the summer we had last year, I'm loving this raininess.

That is, as long as we don't end up like Iowa.

Posted by: jtf | June 16, 2008 10:56 PM

yes, start wishing for snow now. It could take a whole summer of wishing for us to get our inch next winter...
