Photography: Judging Weather Photos

Photo entries in the 2008 Weatherwise photo contest.

A week ago last Thursday, I was one of the judges in the Weatherwise annual photo contest. Other judges included Bob Ryan, Chief Meteorologist of WRC-TV, and Doyle Rice, Chief Weather Editor of USA Today. We judged dozens of impressive photos of thunderstorms, lightning, cloud formations, sunrise and sunsets, snow and ice, and other types of weather photos, submitted by readers of Weatherwise. I cannot reveal the winning photos yet, but they will be displayed in the September/October issue of the Weatherwise magazine.

Keep reading for more photos of the judging. Also, check out our full forecast, and our detailed July 4th forecast.

Doyle Rice of USA Today, Bob Ryan of WRC-TV, and Margaret Benner, Editor of Weatherwise, review photos.

It was difficult to choose the winning photos, with so many great entries, but after about 90 minutes of close review, we selected first, second, and third place, with honorable mentions included. Be sure to check out the September/October issue of Weatherwise to see the winning photos!

Hey Kevin,

I have been playing around with weather shots and would love an opinion as to whether or not they could even be entered in a contest such as this one. Is there a way I could send you my Picasa link and get an opinion? This is a hobby I would like to pursue.

Sara, the weather photo contests are happy to take all entries. I have always thought that living on the east coast puts us at a bit of a disadvantage in these photo contests compared to photographers in the mid-west or west, who have more open views of the sky and usually better visibility. I'd be happy to give an opinion, my email address can be found on my website -- www.weatherbook.com under the "contact us" link.
