Your story raises a question in my mind.

The Hart Building is the newest of the Senate's office buildings. Why does it have to be modified to accommodate a Senator in a wheelchair, and why does it take a Senator in a wheelchair to get the building modified? The Americans with Disabilities Act requires PRIVATE buildings to be modified to accommodate the disabled. Why is this building still non-compliant?

Not so--if he dies or resigns he can be replaced. "Resigns" is not the same thing as "declared he was incapable of returning to work"

Don asks about the Hart Senate Office Building not being in compliance with the ADA. Partially it's because Congress does a lot of exempting itself, but in this case it's mostly timing:

The Hart Senate Office Building opened in 1982, the ADA was enacted in 1990. The ADA does not carte blanche order buildings in existence prior to the passage of the Act to be modified in their entirety. They need to be made handicap-accessible when there is a need for the public to have access, or when an employee needs access, but only if the expenses are reasonable. Since the public does not have access to many parts of Senator Johnson's suite, but he will need access to the entire suite, an existing part of an existing building is being modified for handicap accessibility.

The memo indicates that some walkways "in the suite" will be widened. The suites in the Hart building are completely modular and the walls can be moved to create offices, conference rooms, etc. This is what the memo was referring to -- moving some interior modular walls to better accommodate wheelchairs. The Hart Building itself is completely handicap accessible. There are level entrances on both the south and east sides and ample elevators.

Why is that every reporter in the world thinks Senate control will flip if Johnson retires and Rounds appoints a GOP Senator? Kanes or someone, correct me if I wrong, but I don't senate leadership will change with the chamber being split 50-50. It's my understanding that with the Senate rules package adopted for this Congress, Harry Reid would still be Majority Leader regardless of Cheney's tie-breaking vote ability. Am I wrong?

It seems like this article could have been a bit better written; between this fact and the "incapacitated" part, two errors in a few paragraphs.

With that said, there's a chance that SD has a law about "incapacitated" Senator's being replaced (their replacement is determined by state law is my understanding), but I doubt it.

Hey, there's a lot of cabbages in South Dakota.

I'm from SD and there aren't many cabbages...in fact the state is known as the "Pheasant Capital of the World"...male birds are called cocks, so in fact the area is full of cocks not cabbages...and is referred to all over the world as "Big Cock Country"....just so you know.

There's little question that Tom Bean's comments are right on the money. Senator Johnson was a decisive vote for the Democrats on many important upcoming issues and targeted for directed energy weapons to cause his stroke, in efforts to allow the Republicans to maintain control. The timing of what happened to him was simply too convenient to ignore, given the Bush Admininstration's continued loss of credibility.

Ameicans need to educate themselves in regard to remote sensing humans, technology which is deployed by the National Security and other agencies within the US Intelligence comminity, who use satellites and supercomputers to home in on the electromagnetic fields that surround our bodies, which are then used as tracking devices to follow us whereever we travel to and record what we say, do and yes, even think. These artificial intelligence computers have the ability to electronically decode our subvocalized thoughts no matter where we are.
