McCain's Back, But Immigration Reform Isn't

Remember when Sen. John McCain's (R-Ariz.) presidential campaign was supposedly dead because of his vocal support for comprehensive immigration reform? And remember when the knives came out for Mike Huckabee because he wasn't tough enough on illegal immigration either?

McCain, of course, just scored a huge political comeback in New Hampshire, and Huckabee triumphed in the Iowa caucuses five days earlier. Mitt Romney, who has attacked both men on immigration the last couple of months, came in second in both states. Fred Thompson, the pick of some vocal anti-illegal immigration activists and members of Congress, finished a distant third in Iowa and snagged about one percent in New Hampshire.

So if McCain can come back from the dead on the campaign trail, does that mean immigration reform -- consigned to the graveyard for the 110th Congress -- can be similarly resurrected on the Congressional agenda? No way, at least according to two key early-state House Republicans.

Iowa Rep. Steve King (R), a Thompson backer who has rapidly become a leader on the immigration issue, warned against reading too much into the early GOP primary results, particularly Huckabee's win in the Hawkeye State.

"There was an evangelical and conservative Christian ... synergy that was created in this state," King said.

He said that many of the Iowans who are stongly opposed to illegal immigration are also devout Christians and firmly anti-abortion, and that even "as they listened to Huckabee speak about [his immigration views] they were already swept up into being for the candidate. So I don't think that issue was a deal-breaker for them. I think they didn't really understand Huckabee's position on immigration."

King said that since the Iowa caucus he's had Huckabee supporters tell him the results proved he was wrong about the issue and its salience on the campaign trail, but King obviously isn't buying it.

And he's confident that Congress will continue to torpedo any effort to enact "comprehensive" immigration reform, regardless of who the GOP presidential nominee -- or the next president -- turns out to be.

"If we get another president who has ... 'compassionate conservatism' run amok, that's going to be real hard for the Republican Party," King said.

South Carolina Rep. Gresham Barrett (R) said the early results might just mean that immigration isn't quite as hot a topic in New Hampshire and Iowa as it is in his state.

Meeting with constituents back home over the winter recess, Barrett said "it seems to me that the No. 1 issue far and away is immigration."

As for whether the Republican primary results and McCain's resurgence might push Congress to try again on immigration reform this year, Barrett said, "I honestly don't think so."

I continue to be amazed that McCain isn't being called on his claim that illegals that break the law will be deported, others who have established a work record will get a "Z" visa. Wait a minute. How does an illegal establish a work record without breaking the law? Isn't using a fraudulent or stolen SS number a crime? I don't get it!!!

Criminals did NOT build America; Citizens and LEGAL immigrants built it. Illegal Aliens and Immigration is NOT the same thing. 80% of the American people want an end to anarchy! This is NOT a Democrat, Republican, Independent issue. It's an American Issue.

Illegal aliens are criminals, those who hire them are criminals and those who aid-and-abet them are criminals.

Illegal aliens in America have NO rights. We are required by law to arrest and prosecute, deport them. (Title 8 U.S. Code) To report illegal aliens call the DHS National Hotline 1 866 DHS 2ICE. (1-866-347-2523)

No, matter your political party affiliation, and setting aside your thoughts on issues. We all need to remember what it is to be an American Citizen. We need to make sure our elected representatives obey their Oath of Office and keep their Oath of Allegiance. See http://tinyurl.com/2znnvl Know whom you are voting for.

"Criminals did NOT build America; Citizens and LEGAL immigrants built it. Illegal Aliens and Immigration is NOT the same thing."

Sorrt but looking into my ansetry I would have to disagree. I am the second generation born in the US. Italian by decent. My Grand-parents committed that outragous crime of over staying their visa (like 40% of the illegals) they loved America so much they had relatives sponsor them and became citizens. I cant prove it but I am all but certain a few bribes and favors were involved. My grand-father was a mason and build railroad bridges that still stand. My father was a decorated hero of WWII. I am a scoutmaster and serve as a greater to returning service me and women arriving home to Pease in Portsmouth. I kinda don't think it's sane to deport me because I am the grand son of an illegal. You are dreaming to think you are going to remove 12M people without spending $12B. I know it's not fair. I dont see myself or my grand parents as criminals. The only difference I see in the situation is that I'm not hispanic. I dont think we should lock the door and throw away the key because we got here before others. Death and taxes are not fair too.

You don`t have to spend billions to deport the illegals Peter... ATTRITION THROUGH ENFORCEMENT!... Take away the illegal jobs, free government handouts, free schooling on the taxpayers dime, anchor baby citizenship, and actually enforce the laws we already have, and the illegals will self deport... Illegals commit many crimes to work here i.e, it`s a federal offense to hire an illegal alien, also social security fraud, identity theft, forgery, and so on... Illegals are already fleeing states that are cracking down i.e. Az,Ok, so imagine if the whole country cracks down... Rino McCain is a pro-amnesty traitor, no matter what he says now... His bill was amnesty, period!... He hasn`t a prayer becoming president... He`s an arrogant old man who needs to hang it up, or thrown out of office, which ever comes first.

Posted by: Independent | January 9, 2008 9:34 PM

Hey independent, not to mention tax evasion! McCain is a RINO, who will never be president. He now says he never was for amnesty, and in 2003 said this:

I think we can set up a program where amnesty is extended to a certain number of people who are eligible ... Amnesty has to be an important part". McCain said.

McCains thought on the border fence:

"By the way, I think the fence is least effective. But I'll build the goddamned fence if they want it." McCain said.

Politicians are masters at illusions!

Posted by: Myke | January 9, 2008 9:45 PM

I agree Fine the employers that hire Illegals, And the Illegals will self deport. McCain will not get my vote he is lying about his Amnesty claims. The Pres. race is a joke. They tell you what they think you want hear. Romney is sounding better to me as time goe's on. But it is early in the game. I just want to hear Hillary cry 1 more time. The terrorist that want to kill us are crying from laughing at her.

Posted by: Randy | January 9, 2008 9:55 PM

We should enforce our immigration laws without fear, favor, or malice and over time the problem will be corrected. It took us 2 decades to get to this mess and if we focus our attention and have a good President we can solve this problem in considerably less time than it took to create. McCain is despicable. Romney has a lot to offer. And I like Ron Paul on some issues. Huckabee is another disasterous "compassionate conservative" which is another word for liberal. Just as I think (tongue in cheek) that GWB is the illegitimate son of Barbara Bush and Jimmy Carter. I think Huckabee is the illegitimate son of Roslynn Carter and Gomer Pyle. Roslynn's revenge against Jimmy's infidelity. It's a joke people!!!

Illigal immigrants are not criminals, finally the real americans are saying what we really think about this people, just look at Mitt Rommey loosing in Iowa and New Hampshire and he was damn right to pull his ads from Florida were he is certainly hated, isn't he suppose to be winning the primaries? If all the american people is against the 12 million immigrants already in the country as he has beeing saying. This anti immigration suit that he puts on is just starting to back fire on him.
If anybody should win this elections is a democrat or John McCain if it's a Republican.
They will reunify this country again to be one strong and solid nation.

Posted by: Anthony | January 9, 2008 10:52 PM

No, Anthony, you cannot build a strong country on a foundation of illegality. The foundation that has kept America unified and strong in the past was a respect for the law. Without that, forget it. We are through. Why? Because the elites in this nation, who people like John McCain, Hillary Clinton, Obama, and others serve, hate laws that get in their way, even if it means the downfall of the country. Afterall, they can live anywhere with their money. Can you? Aren't some of you people listening? Even John Edwards said several times in the New Hampshire debates, that the system is rigged and the politicians bought and paid for. Are some of you Americans just plain dense? Illegal immigration is causing massive wage depression for your fellow Americans. Remember them?

Posted by: Bobby | January 9, 2008 11:03 PM

Please understand----If Huckabee, McCain, Guliani or one of the Dems get into office----they are going to try to push through amnesty for hte 20 million illegals. PLUS, they will be able to bring in millions more of their family members through chain migration.

PLEASE support and vote for Romney!!!! He is being endorsed/supported by both Tom Tancredo and Sherrif Joe. He is our BEST chance and most "realistic" chance of stopping the illegal invasion madness---and Mexico's interference in our laws/country!!!!

Senator John McCain should be made permanent President of the State of New Hampshire.....but not President of the United States. The truth is McCain cannot win the GOP Presidential nomination because of his sponsorship of the radical McCain/Kennedy amnesty bill that was crushed by overwhelming public opposition in June, 2007. Mr. McCain has turned off Republican party faithful too many times by his collaboration with liberal Democrats like Senator Ted Kennedy. The chickens will come home to roost for McCain when he has to win in closed Republican primaries where he cannot be helped by Democratic crossover voters.

Lately I've noticed the same posts being posted on every story dealing with immigration and even some that had nothing to do with immigration. This is across several publications. There's about 10 of you I'm guessing that surf the net all day posting this. Don't you people want a life? To meet real people? Do you think immigrants are sitting all day at their computers doing this? No, they're out there working and spending time with their family. Stop blaming your hermit lifestyle on immigrants and hug a Mexican. You'll have a friend and maybe a new perspective.

Not that many decades ago, Mexicans would migrate to California every spring for the growing, picking, and canning, seasons. It was like clockwork, they would always arrive when the work was available, AND THEN, in the fall, when the work was finished, THEY WOULD QUIETLY RETURN TO THEIR HOMES IN MEXICO. This worked very well for everyone, and nobody complained. Then in 1986 Reagan granted Amnesty to a supposed 1.7 million illegal immigrants, that turned out to be 3 million illegal immigrants, who had gathered here over many decades. Since then, for the last 21 years, illegal immigrants have been flooding in to the United States to live, expecting that it was only a matter of time, before, they too, would be granted Amnesty.

I've got news for them. THERE WILL BE NO AMNESTY!!

85 hospitals, and medical centers, have closed in California in the last 20 years, mainly attributed to the unreimbursed money they have lost from treating illegal immigrants. Where is CA's legislation against illegal immigrants. Oklahoma, Arizona, Georgis, Missouris, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kansas. Missouri, Virginia, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Michigan, and any number of other states, are all passing laws to protect their states from illegal immigrants. California probably has more illegal immigrants than all of those states combined, and California isn't doing anything to protect our state from the financial abuse caused by illegal immigrants. Where are our legislators? Where is our Governor?

Posted by: Buzzm1 | January 10, 2008 8:41 AM

You can't introduce another 20 million working poor poverty level people into the economy without causing an enormous financial burden on the middle, and upper class. Illegal immigrants do not earn enough money to pay their fair share of taxes, to offset the amount of benefits they consume. According to a Heritage Foundation study, an illegal immigrant family of four creates a $20,000 tax burden for the rest of us. Multiply that number by 5 million, and that's a 100 Billion Dollars burden placed on American taxpayers. There are up to 40 million illegal immigrants in our United States. Think of the enormous financial burden placed on American taxpayers.

Posted by: Buzzm1 | January 10, 2008 8:46 AM

We have to keep out all Dems and rino repubs like McCain, This country cannot afford another 20 million illegal aliens, Right now Romney is offering the best solutions to ending the illegal immigration mess.

Posted by: usanevada | January 10, 2008 9:36 AM

Attrition through enforcement is the ONLY way to stop illegal immigration!
McCain just doesn't get it. 85% of the American people DO NOT WANT AMNESTY in any form!
AMERICA WOULDN'T BE OUR COUNTRY ANYMORE IF WE ALLOWED EVERYONE WHO WANTS TO BE HERE AMNESTY. IT WOULD BELONG TO STRANGERS.

The Funny Truth is that all candidates can say whatever they want for or against the undocumented workers. IT is The Congress and Senate that makes the laws, so nothing will be done, each state will take matters into their own hands, and later find out that they have hurt themselves. So why waste your precious time on something you cannot change?

Thinking that 20 million will just getup & leve is WISHFUL THINKING :)

CLOSE THE BORDERS FIRST, Then allow those who are here for many years without CRIMINAL RECORDS, To start a path towards citizenship. FIRST CLOSE THE BORDERS>

Posted by: Funny Truth | January 10, 2008 10:05 AM

Unless we start emailing the Media in mass about our disgust at them for not asking the difficult questions they will continue to ignore the issues. The Democrats have had a pass on Illegal immigration and Obama hasn't any platform except Amnesty for all. I believe that is called change, the taxpayers who make over 70K picks up the tab.

NO PATH TO CITIZENSHIP FOR ANY ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS. To do so, sends the same message that Reagan gave to illegal immigrants in 1986. Come into the U.S. illegally, and eventually we will give you citizenship. Enough already. We have between 20 and 40 million illegal immigrants in our United States and they are costing American Taxpayers, 100's of Billion of Dollars a year, and they are abusing our welfare systems meant for our own, 45 million, or so, poverty level working poor. They broke the law when they came here. They have more forged documents than Carter has little liver pills. They are breaking our laws at every turn, and some think they should be rewarded with citizenship?? GO HOME ILLEGALES, YOU ARE NOT WANTED IN OUR UNITED STATES!! BUILD THE FENCE SO THEY STOP COMING BACK IN!! SECURE THE BORDER!! I, for one, like the idea of putting our troops at our coasts, and borders, and within the United States, rather than have them babysitting at 700+ outposts throughout the world. But then again, that would mean that we would have to stop paying Halliburton's KBR for managing those 700+ bases. Cheney might have a heart attack.

Posted by: Buzzm1 | January 10, 2008 10:27 AM

I got news for you Buzzm1,3.3 million Immigrants became legalized under President Reagan's immigration reform program of 1986, and subsequently the US had one of most economically successful eras in our history, can you disagree with this?
"Washington seems to be thinking only about getting elected, when the United States is in real need of comprehensive immigration reform"
There are many who hold serious misgivings about the influx of undocumented immigrants in this country. Their objections are grounded in legitimate concerns about the exploitation of undocumented workers and our ability to adequately meet the needs of the growing undocumented community. But, unfortunately, there are many others whose opposition to a compassionate approach to dealing with our broken immigration system is based upon racist stereotypes and fear of non-White immigrant communities. These forces of hatred want to scapegoat the vulnerable and marginalized undocumented immigrant community for political purposes.
And finally I still belive that we don't need a flip floper as a president of the USA as Mitt Rommey, He was once all for a comphrensive solution for our immigration problem and he even have undocumented workers doing his lawn, and now he is against it to win as much delegates as he needs to win the nomination.
Guess what the American People are compasionate people and we don't need haters like Rommey in the office.

Posted by: Anthony | January 10, 2008 11:23 AM

I have "news" for the previous commenter. As a result of Reagan's amnesty: illegal immigration soared five-fold, landing us in the present crisis the American people face. It hardly explains the "success" of the economy under Reagan. Indeed, was there "success"? I seem to recall his leaving the largest deficits (until the Bush era) in US history. Also, the impact on American working-class, lower-middle class and the working poor has been disastrous, though these are not groups the Gipper cared about much. According to studies by the National Research Council the influx of masses of impoverished immigrants (legal and illegal) caused a 45% decrease in wages of Americans workers in the bottom quartile. It's also true, according to the CBO, that for every 1% of illegal aliens in any given profession, the wages for native Americans fall by 7%. It's true that some people made a great deal of money -- exploitative employers in the service sector, meat packing, the restaurant business, etc. on the indentured servitude of largely Hispanic poor immigrants. With the economy now in a downturn and people beginning to use the "R" word -- recession -- it is likely that immigration will have even greater salience because of its devastating effects on American workers. Also, lest it be forgotten, illegals don't only pick strawberries: they are now working in construction jobs that were vehicles for upward mobility and middle class lives for millions of Americans -- people who worked and work as framers, carpenters, electricians, masons, etc. Wages for all of these are falling because of the unforgiving law of supply and demand and the massive influx of people who will work for nothing.
Immigration caused McCain's candidacy to implode once. He can't whistle past this graveyard. It will destroy him once and for all.

Posted by: Stephen Steinlight | January 10, 2008 11:49 AM

Say what you will but the article is right; immigration reform does not have to be done right now; it will be done, nevertheless. The few that are closed minded poor Americans that don't see the contributions of the continued flow of fresh minds and bodies willing to build our country will be, ironically, be the same ones that can't handle competition. Attrition is a good label for them.

Posted by: rds | January 10, 2008 11:56 AM

Everyone in this country will benefit if we have immigration reform and undocumented immigrants are legalized. This even includes the people who insist they should all be deported.
We all agree that people should not be here undocumented and that we should document everyone entering and leaving our country. Legalizing these undocumented residents will benefit the whole country: the military, Social Security, our economy, education, even our national security.
The most immediate benefit would be to business. Our unemployment rate is below 4.5 percent. With so few people out of work now, there would not be enough available workers to replace undocumented workers if they were suddenly deported. Our birthrate is low, our population is aging (Baby Boomers)and the workforce is shrinking.
If farmers can't hire enough workers to plant or harvest, they would close and more of our food would be imported. This would raise safety concerns and bring higher prices. Hotels, restaurants and landscape companies would close.
Even with the recent economic slowdown, there wouldn't be enough workers left to build houses. Factories that could outsource their work overseas would. The companies that close would leave all their legal workers unemployed. Besides these obvious problems, there would be a smaller tax base for affected towns and the country.
A major benefit would be to Social Security. Fifty years ago, there were 20 workers for every retiree on Social Security. By 2030, there will be two workers to cover each retiree. The young immigrant workers here now (and their children) may be the answer to the Social Security funding problems of the future.
Our military would benefit, too. There are almost 30,000 non-citizens on active duty in our military. Active-duty immigrants can apply for citizenship in less time than usual without having to return home before applying. Many immigrants place a high value on training and education available through the military. When citizenship requirements are eased, more immigrants will sign up, which will help enlistment numbers.
All immigrants know they should speak and understand English, but since they could be deported at any moment, there is little incentive to learn. If the undocumented people were required to learn English in order to stay here, they would all learn it.
If all legal residents have to know English, the lines in the grocery store and bank will move faster, neighbors can discuss problems, we'll have safer traffic when everyone can read the signs and apply for drivers licenses, women can report domestic violence, parents and teachers can discuss a child's progress, problems can be discussed with a doctor, and contracts and agreements will be understood.
The high school dropout rate for immigrant children is very high. They know that even if they qualify, they won't be able to attend college at an affordable price. If they manage to get a college degree, they can't get a good job because they are here undocumented. This defeats the purpose of their education and our country loses the benefits of these young people educated in our schools.
If undocumented people are offered legal status, they would have to register with the government, be fingerprinted and have a background check before receiving an ID card. People who do not pass these tests would be deported.
We will all be safer when all residents have been identified and investigated. And more drug smugglers would be caught when border guards don't have to chase poor men, women and children trying to come in to work and live.
There are many reasons why we need immigration reform and why we all should be happy when we get it. Everyone will benefit when we get a comprehensive immigration reform package passed.

Posted by: Anthony | January 10, 2008 12:36 PM

If all the illegals are documented, fingerprinted and given a work card, the newly legal will be preferred for hiring because the legal citizen will not be fingerprinted or documented..Or will they?
If all the illegals are legalized, having to pay social security, taxes, worker comp, they are just as expensive as legal workers..so there will be another 20 million pouring over the border to work cheaper..
There aren't any simple solutons to complex problems..Amnesty was a simple solution under Reagan and it didn't work..
Enforcement is a complex solution to a complex problem and It Works..

Posted by: rye | January 10, 2008 1:00 PM

It's ridiculous to assert that "we can't" deport 12 million illegals. America is export at logistics, moving large numbers of people and materials anywhere, anytime. Fighting two sumultaneous wars, numerous police actions, sundry national and international natural disasters tends to prove our ability to put large numbers of people virtually anywhere in the world they should be. During the Eisenhower administration approximately 1,5 million illegals were deported to Mexico is less than 4 months, using fewer than 800 border patrol agents. Anyone who asserts we can't deport these people is delusional. Attrition through enforcement would account for the majority of illegals, as well as disuading more from coming. As for the costs of deporting illegals if it becomes necessary, why not confiscate their ill-gotten gains? The jobs, the money, the cars and trucks and real estate they've aquired while living hear illegally would all be ill-gotten gains subject to confiscation. Indeed, the fear of losing the ill-gotten gains the violated our laws to aquire might encourage even more illegals to "sell out" and self deport. Law enforcement already utilizes asset forfeiture and the subsequent revenue from sale of these assets benefits the local community.

There are different ways to say Illegal Alien, there is of course(undocumented, illegal immigrant, even undocumented citizen)So for now on you can call a drug dealer, an"unlicensed pharmacist" or the new word for a burglar is "uninvited house guest".The bottom line is what part of Illegal do you not understand. This country is great because of legal immigrants. Our country is going in to a reccesion where is the all the money they put back in our economy? We need Americans living the American dream not illegal aliens

I have yet to see a valid argument in favor of "more people chasing fewer resources. Overpopulation, congestion, urban sprawl, crime, pollution, lack of affordable housing, failing schools, inadequate health care, diminishing resources, vanishing farm land and green space, depressed wages, increased tax burdens, etc,,, have all been negatively impacted by unconstrained immigration. Enforcing our laws against illegal aliens is not a crime!

Posted by: Ed Weirdness | January 10, 2008 2:26 PM

Sorry Anthony, your argements don't hold water. Every illegal immigrant added into the workforce constitutes another tax burden on middle, and upper, class Americans. The more illegal immigrants, the greater the tax burden incurred. THREE RULES ABOUT ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS....RULE #1. Illegal immigrants only benefit Business Owners, their Paid Politicians, Chambers Of Commerce, and the Hierarchy of the Catholic Church.....RULE # 2. American Taxpayers pay through the nose for all of the FREE BENEFITS provided to illegals....RULE #3. Re-Read RULE #1, and RULE #2

Posted by: Buzzm1 | January 10, 2008 4:04 PM

ATTRITION.....Enforce the existing laws against anyone hiring an illegal immigrant, illegal alien, illegal entrant, any other illegal name of your choosing, and the illegal immigrants will begin to disappear. Send out the No-Match letters, pass the SAVE ACT, cut off the free benefits, and more will disappear. American haven't yet come to a boil on the illegal immigration issue, but every time we hear an argument about their entitlements, and rights, here in the United States, we move another degree closer to the boiling point. Anchor babies, alone, is good for about 2o degrees.

Ronald Reagans policies were a nightmare for this nation. I can say this as a Republican because I realized later what he actually accomplished. He ruined the union movement, he amnestied millions of border criminals leading to increased crime, corruption, hospitals closing, wage depression, etc. etc. I say lets build another monument to him, name another airport to this genius. In the meantime, John, "you won't pick lettuce for fifty dollars and hour",McCain, is going to carry on the tradition of ruining the nation. He is as bad as all of the Democratic politicians. Do nothing for Americans except talk B.S.to them.

Why then are those who are drumming the war drums on Illegal Immigration, saying they are CRIMINALS? WHEN SOMEONE DOSE NOT COMMIT A CRIME ITS NOT CRIMINAL.
This is also what Rudy Gulliani said, and many KNOW THAT THEY"RE DRUMMING WAR DRUMS WITH SPIN HATE WORDS WHICH ARE NOT BASED ON TRUTH AND FACTS.

If the congress wants then let them make a new law saying that being undocumented in the country is a crime. until then lets remain cool headed and rational.

How can anyone call McCain a traitor?! He is decorated military veteran and former POW. I'm a Barack supporter, but let's stay rationale. McCain is not a traitor.
Secondly, most economists believe even undoc/illegal immigrants benefit the econ by a providing needed labor, paying sales and property taxes at a mininum, and pouring $ into social security in unclaimed income tax that will not be recouped. Even the former Republican comptroller of Texas (Rylander) had to admit undoc immigrants added to the general revenue of Texas in the first ever statewide report of the econ impact of undoc on a state. Stop citing FAIR, the Heritage Foundation or the Center for Immig Studies- it's biased and scewed data. At the very least check out, the Manhattan Institute- a conservative think tank that recognizes the contributions of undoc immigrants and the need to legalize workers if we ever want to fix our broken immig system and secure our borders.

Secure the Border, stop ALL benefits for illegals, and attrition will follow. No more arguments or angry discussions needed.

Porous borders are a problem for every country, not just the United States, Iraq, and Afganistan. In the USA, we have neglected solving the problem for too long. Now, our schools, roads, hospitals, are used by these infiltrators. We, as taxpayers, have been paying for their use these services: free education, free use of the roads, free hospitalization, free pre-natal care, and free hospital delivery. Each new birth brings a new USA citizen, dual citizen or tri-citizen, because the infiltrator did not lose his native citizenship coming here, and the newly born is granted USA citizenship. And, the USA has done away with the old requirement that multi-country citizens must choose one country for citizenship upon becoming age 21, so in the long run we have people eligible to vote as citizens in many countries. Dual and triple passports seem to be becoming the norm. And, a person with multiple passports can "lend" one to a "brother," "sister," "cousin," "friend," etc. It will become a mess; this is not what I want for America. Let's solve the problem. At least SECURE THE BORDERS and go back to having to choose ONE nation to give one's loyalty to.

The economy is dependent on the cheap labor of the illegal immigrant.
Stop the non sense. Grow up !
YOU CAN NOT ENFORCE THE CURRENT IMMIGRANT LAWS WITHOUT BREAKING THE ECONOMY.
85% of the agriculture workers are illegals.
45% of the construction workers are illegal.
Every single industry has illegals.
Some employers hire illegals to make more money, some hire illegal because there are not that many american willing to work in the agriculture, construction, low skill jobs.
A new immigration process has to be created, either you like it or not.
GROW UP ! STOP THE HATE!
There will be no amnesty as the illegals dream, and there is no way to deport the 12m people!
That's the reality.
GROW UP ! STOP THE HATE!
We should be frustated with our own government that let the problem explode.
Unfortunately the republican party had all in hands to fix the problem, president, senate and congress for several years, and done nothing. It even had a terrist attack, and after 8 years, the borders, overstayed visas are basically the same.
GROW UP! STOP THE HATE!
The problem are not the illegal immigrant! the problem is the government doesn't have a realistic immigration policy.

I can believed that most of the people in this discussion are United States Citizens, you are the ones that need to be removed or deported from this great and compasionate land along with your xenophobias that don't do anything but bring us apart.
Let's see what you guys will say when all these people get legalize and they become your best next door neighbors and their kids becomes your kids best friends.
Stop the hate for Christ sakes

85% of the nations agricultural workers are NOT illegal. And contruction is not constituted of 45% illegals. Those numbers are made up to deflect attention from simple facts.
Come in legally or not at all. Stay legally or not at all. Apply for entry & then "wait your turn."
Immigration enforcement & control is NOT a racial issue. It is not a bigots issue. The facts make people angry, but the truth is, Americans want their government to "protect them."
Open borders, or easy access, or no enforcement, mean we are NOT protected.
When will anyone "get it!!!???"
19 crossed into America from Canada. Then they established residency with drivers licenses. Then they exited & entered at will. Many over-stayed legal permission. Some just came illegally. They then killed 3,000.
The issue is, if we do not stop illegal entries, illegal over-stays, and other immigration abuses, we will face another 9-11 with potentially more lives lost.
Bush's positions on immigration are bunk. So too are McCain's.
We need real immigration enforcement.

Come on folks.....the post earlier demonstrating the problems in Arizona and New Mexico (about the amount of illegals in detention centers etc) is an excellent picture of the realities of our situation. 12 Million illegals being prosecuted and sent back is likely an impossible situation to deal with. How long, and how much of our resources will it take. Mayor Guliani described the reality of this problem- it would take 100% of our court system several years to handle those in NYC alone! The reality is, we can't prosecute and send back everyone. That being said, the most realistic approach is that being said by McCain. It also fits with what McCain has said for his entire career- you may not like what he says, but he tells you what he thinks can be accomplished. Romney will say anything it takes at the moment to pander for your support. Look at his record, not his current rhetoric. Look at McCain's life and record. McCain gets himself in trouble because he says what he thinks - not what he hopes you will like.

Nothing will work until we secure the borders. In the USA, we cannot prosecute 12 million people without closing down the court system for YEARS to nothing else but this. What about the other crimes committed?

The best method of clearing out the problems is to close down the incentive to come here. Deport immediatly any illegal caught in any infraction of any law in any state. Huge fines for any company that hires an undocumented worker. Prosecution of anyone that hires an illegal (the manager, HR person, etc). Long sentences and huge fines for anyone caught selling/making documentation for the purpose of illegal immigration.

None of it has a prayer of working until the border has been sealed off--not just that in Mexico. All borders and entry points.

That will require someone that can, and will make decisions that will be politically unpopular. Someone that has a proven track record of working with the opposition party, because nothing will happen unless that happens. Someone that has a proven track record of unwillingness to look for "Pork" for his/her constituency. Someone willing to veto all bills with earmarks for special intrests (like those that benefit illegals). Someone that has already survived more than 99% of us will ever have to endure (like 5 years in a Vietnamese Prison aka the "Hanoi Hilton).

Or, do you want someone with a proven track record of pandering- that will spend 4 years working hard to get re-elected- Republican or Democrat. When a tough decision needs to be made, someone with the proven mettle to actually make it without polling a focus group.

McCain is not perfect- there are no perfect people out there. No one will be able to do anything without being able to stare down congress, and be willing to look America in the eye and level with them. Reagan did exactly that. Not everything he did was perfect either, but he DID stare down congress and talk to America to tell them reality. Ask the Air Traffic Controllers about Reagan's willingness to decide.

What does "rino" mean? What do you all think of Thompson? He is the only one I have heard who has spoken of changing/or challenging the interpretation regarding anchor babies law. And he seems to be in favor of zero tolerance for illegal immigrants. I think strict border enforcement coupled with strict enforcement of laws and deportation of caught law-breakers would eventually straighten out this situation. And then if we needed workers, we could expand the limits on legal immigrants. I've been amazed that Americans have been so tolerant for so long, since there have been demands for Spanish speakers in many jobs and "rights" for people who are here illegally. When I travel to foreign countries, I am grateful when I find someone there who can translate for me; I certainly don't demand anything, and if I were planning to illegally stay there, I would learn the language there quickly and be very, very nice. And yes we all, mostly, come from immigrants, and some of them were immigrants before there were laws about it, but times change and now we do have laws and sort of have borders and certainly have needs of security. And we certainly don't need another country trying to tell us what we can and cannot do within our borders. And who believes that this rich, powerful country cannot build fences and hire guards and do whatever is necessary to secure our borders and ports? We need to think carefully about who we elect in the future and not just for president.

the reality ,as i see it,is as follows;1.american kids dont know how to work, mainly because they dont work with their parents in an agricultural setting where the boys grew up helping their dad tending horses, cows chickens and doing fieldwork, preparing fields for planting and harvesting in comeasuratly with their age and ability.the girls helped mom cooking other house work, and tending the vegetable patch One learned the connection between effort and success, slovenyness and failure .this generalised format describes how we learned about success and failure as embedded into our psyche over eons of time. When dad and sonetimes mother left for work and returned with money ad groceries at the end of the day kids lost the key to how all this happened especially since growing up on the telly gives the wrong impression on the audience.the telly kids dont have a clue how to earn a living in the modern world, eithr naturally, or synthetically, through educationthis is not true with the average latin emigrant.his parents are usually still agrarians.they still know how to "work".the power of quality work is compensated by positive feedbackand usually what is known as success. In twenty years,it appears that the latins will be in the majority,so whats all the fuss about .?

I think that many of us are forgetting that the "illegal immigrants" are mostly the ones picking our fruits and vegetables from early in the morning until, sometimes, late in the evenings. They are the ones that help our Christmas trees to look perfect every year, by trimming and grooming them. If you send them away, I think you will see a dramatic increase in the cost of food. When the farmer has to pay someone twice as much as they do now, don't think that it won't be reflected in your food costs. Besides that, how many of us are willing to go out and pick fruits and vegetables in all kinds of weather all day long. The spanish and other immigrants, illegal and legal, are fulfilling a very needed service roll in our society. Many of us, in fact probably 98% of us, come from immigrants. I very much doubt, as some would like to think, that all of them came over here legally. A lot of them had to obtain illegal/fake visas, use bribes, etc. in their original countries to come here. And some of our ancestors, who were some of the pioneers in America, were sent here because they had violated the law back home. In fact when we got to the Americas we stole it from the hands of the Indians, and then had slaves build huge plantations for us and do our remedial work. So, for those of you who feel that the United States only built by honesty and integrity, you may want to take a history class. I'm not saying that breaking the law is right, but even if you go 5 miles over the speed limit you are breaking the law. How many of us can honestly say that we have never done anything wrong or dishonest? How many of us want the best for our families and children, and are willing to do everything we can to see them thrive and succeed in life? Sometimes, choices in life are not as clean cut as we think. If my child was starving or suffering, I would do what I had to to provide a better life for that child. Which is exactly what many of our ancestors did, that is why we are the successful people and country that we are, because someone in our history decided that we were worth fighting and dying for, so they carved a path for us in the only way they knew how based on their circumstances, and with much sacrifice on their part. Illegal immigrants are trying to provide a better life for their families. We accuse them of taking our jobs from us, but in reality I don't see any of us clamoring after the jobs that they do. I certainly am not going to leave my office job to go pick strawberries on my knees all day in the hot sun and rain. Are you? Or are you just threatened by the fact that our society is getting more color to it than you like? Depending on the time of our American history, we have hated Irish, German, Japanese, Jews, Chinese, Russians, etc. Every time we feel threatened we want to blame it on one race or another, but in the end none of these threats were shown to be accurate, they only became an embarrassing subnote on our history. It is time to view people as people, the same as you and me, trying to survive life and make it better for our children and descendants. All in all, I am very much in favor of work visas, and providing those who have been working for ALL of us for years the right to be U.S. citizens. The work visas will provide a way for them to do their work legally, which seems to be the concern for many of you. The amnesty just allows those people to stay here that haven't been any problem to us in the first place. After they become citizens, they will have to pay taxes and everything just like the rest of us. It is not like they are living on easy street right now. So, I don't see what your problem is with immigration reform. I am proud to be a mix of many nationalities, German, Irish, Scottish, Dannish, French, and English. My ancestry is what makes me an U.S. American. May God continue to bless all of His children!

I say we need to bring the land back to the
people here in general. We need to remember the concept of family farming and
values. The politicians have made our lives a game.

Maybe the two party system does not work
after all? The Constitution is and was
a good guideline.

The way things are going we all will be in
a downright civil war in the not too far
future, or just down the road?

When I have visited other countries and to
say Mexico, boy, they expect and demand
visitors to follow rules. It is expected.

It is possibly a good idea that the Immig-
ration Reform was shelved for now. More
time is needed to re-work the current laws?

In time we all will become global and the
governing methods will serve all, not in
the "shadows" as of present.
