Democrats Pull Ethics Bill

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) just announced on the House floor that Democrats were canceling plans to vote tomorrow on a proposal to create a new Office of Congressional Ethics.

After a full day of private meetings on both sides of the aisle, it became clear to Democratic leaders that there was too much opposition to the plan, both within their own ranks and on the GOP side, to move forward. Hoyer did say the subject would come back soon after some effort at bipartisan negotiations on the subject.

"We do expect to consider it soon, but not tomorrow," Hoyer said.

The tipping point against the Democrats plan may have come in the House Rules Committee, which met for several hours to consider the proposal. Several Democrats on the committee, including Chairwoman Louise Slaughter (N.Y.), voiced their opposition to the plan. Speaking of both the Democrats' proposal and the GOP's counter-proposal, Rep. Dennis Cardoza (D-Calif.) said both ideas "suck."

This congress and the previous one just happen to be the most needy of all. My hope is that a million people will one day descend on their doorsteps and demand that they accept an Oversight Committee comprised of just ordinary, law abiding people who want justice. What stinkers!

I believe that there has to be some way to punish senators and representatives who think that they are above the law and can do any thing that a regular person in the country would be punished for or lose their job or be demoted in their company hierarchy for misbehavoir.
