Kucinich Vows to Keep Up Impeachment Fight
The House voted today by a comfortable margin to refer 35 articles of impeachment against President Bush to the Judiciary Committee, as the measure's chief sponsor vowed to bring the issue up again if the panel does not agree to hold hearings.
On a 251-166 vote, the chamber elected to refer Rep. Dennis Kucinich's (D-Ohio) resolution to the Judiciary panel. All 227 Democrats present voted in favor of the referral, along with 24 Republicans -- a big boost from the four GOP lawmakers who voted for referral of charges against Vice President Cheney back in November.
Democratic leaders have made clear that they want no further action on impeachment this year, but Kucinich said after the vote that doing nothing was not an option.
"Leadership wants to bury it, but this is one resolution that will be coming back from the dead," Kucinich told Capitol Briefing. "Thirty days from now, if there is no action, I will be bringing the resolution up again, and I won't be the only one reading it."
Judiciary Chairman John Conyers (D-Mich.) has not commented on whether he plans to hold hearings, and Kucinich said he would meet with Conyers this week to present him with documentation for his charges against Bush. But if there is no further action, Kucinich said, "We'll come back and many of us will be reading this [on the House floor], and we'll come back with 60 articles, not 35."
Some Democrats agree with Kucinich that there should be hearings, but don't necessarily believe the House should actually impeach Bush.
"In my district, people have asked me many times why we haven't impeached President Bush, because they felt some of the things that he has done far outweighs what Clinton was impeached for," said Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.).
Cummings said he'd like to see Judiciary hold impeachment hearings, because "there are a lot of questions out there and I think a lot of those questions need to be answered before [Bush] leaves office." But Cummings doesn't think the House should take the process all the way to the end, as it did with Clinton.
"The time we spend impeaching the president would be better spent doing productive things for the country," he said.
On the GOP side, some of the 166 lawmakers who voted against referral today did so because they wanted to simply table the resolution, while others actually wanted to have an immediate, full floor debate so they could try to paint Democrats as partisan extremists.
"In my personal opinion, we should have had a debate," said Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-Ga.), who called the entire impeachment movement "just political posturing."

So have the hearings! It's not the same thing as actual impeachment. What is democratic leadership so afraid of? Pelosi and her posse are pathetic - they are supposed to uphold the Constitution from its enemies, and if the Bush White House isn't an enemy of the Constitution, you have to wonder what would qualify. Hold the hearings and see what happens. heaven knows this congress has done little enough so far.

The time the House Judiciary Committee spends on oversight would be more effective if they had additional powers to get to the truth.
"In an impeachment hearing, the administration does not have the power of executive privilege," Wexler said, noting that the secret tapes that helped bring down President Richard Nixon did not surface until the House Judiciary Committee began impeachment hearings.
"Whether we are talking about the manipulation of intelligence," he went on, "whether we are talking about the outing of a covert CIA agent, whether we're talking about the illegal use of torture, whether we're talking about the potentially unlawful firing of U.S. prosecutors - on all of these issues, the administration has thus far successfully used the power of executive privilege."

roflmao "...if there is no further action, Kucinich said, "We'll come back and many of us will be reading this [on the House floor], and we'll come back with 60 articles, not 35." Conress has had 8 years to be productive and ingnore the people is what they have done if they impeach Cheney & Bush they did something useful at least. Next they hold hearings all kinds of things will turn up.

The Bush Impeachment Resolution H Res 1258 was refered directly to the Judiciary Committee today, apparently
Without the slightest effort by Kucinich to first force a vote to debate it on the House Floor.
Kucinich requested it be sent directly to the Committee without first holding a vote to try to force a debate?
Many Republican Congressmen would have voted for debate as they did with the Cheney Resolution. What is going on?
Nearly all Democrats voted for it to be buried in the Committee. Convenient, Pelosi must be ecstatic.
Wonder how Obama feels about defending the Constitution? Is he "for torture"? Is he "for outing a CIA Agent? Next time he is in town we should all ask him.
If our Congressmen won't defend Our Constitution perhaps Obama will?
I find it very strange that an experienced legislator like Kucinich would not call for a vote on floor debate first as he did with the Cheney impeachment Resolution (H Res 333/799), as opposed to instead first calling for a vote to refer the measure directly to committee where he knows that no action will probably be taken, ever.
I suspect that Kucinich was allowed to introduce the measure by Pelosi with the (perhaps unspoken) requirement (or expectation) that the only vote would be one referring it directly to committee, which would then allow all House Democrats to claim they voted to study the resolution rather than vote to kill it. It is a smoke screen to make it plain to the voters and the media that the
impeachment issue is dead for good, but all the while giving each Democrat cover on the issue. The Dems can claim they didn't vote to kill it.
There was some speculation when Kucinich failed to introduce this resolution at the time he withdrew from the presidential race, and after meeting with Pelosi, that she had pressured him to sit on the bill.
I truly believe Kucinich is a first class patriot and a defender of the Constitution and I sincerely hope that Pelosi hasn't put a political hex on him. He deserves better.
Once again the House Democrats prove they are not worthy to call themselves patriots. Those that wrote the Constitution must be spinning in their graves.
The only way to get the House Democrats to honor their oath and protect the Constitution is to make them fear losing their jobs. Of course we have to have the willingness and courage to make that happen. We are doing just that in Colorado.

Impeach Nancy Pelosi for blocking Conyers for this long.
The evidence against the Administration is strong, not only on impeachment, but treason for the theory of ythe unitary executive (actively undermining the COnstitution constitutes treason) as well as international human rights violations, war crimes, and violations of the Geneva Convention.
We must impeach now so as to remove executive immunity for criminal prosecutions for crimes yet to be discovered.

Bush 43 used his executive power to "declassify strategic information about
an active CIA operative for political purposes". He admitted it to McClellen. He put his personal political objectives ahead of the nation he serves. Only he can committ such an immoral act and it not be labeled treason. He put himself above national security, he destroyed a partiotic American's service and exposed contacts as well as other field operatives to danger. All the stuff leading to Iraq has lots of innocuous charges and countercharges-What he knew and didn't know. But this was a deliberate misuse of his executive authority putting the country at risk. This is an impeachable offense. Even the President is not allowed to use his powers for personal gain. He used his executive authority for personal political gain and provided Cheney and Libby with a free pass to betray the country in a time of great peril.

Maybe now the people of this country will realize that this is NOT a democracy! It's an aristocracy, and the wealthy and powerful are simply above the law. Either accept it or do something about it. But at least open your eyes.

What of the spineless Pelosi, who has done everything in her power to aid the administration without questioning anything? Shouldn't she also go? What about her utter lawlessness in trying to force an Amnesty of 20-30million people who have come here illegally, without the citizenrys permission, against existing U.S. immigration law? And what of the subsequent chain migration of millions more if Amnesty is given? Isn't this as serious as the war in Iraq? Are you people all crazy?

My final opinion on the well meaning Kucinich is a kind of reference to Mrs. Pelosi, where the impeachment of Mr. Bush is concerned, "fat chance" says Mrs. Pelosi. "Don't you remember I said impeachment is off the table".
Now don't tell me that the lock step, programmatic Democrats are going to be in for a little fight. This I've got to see.

What a shame that Bill Clinton will have to bear the stigma of impeachment, brought about by overzealous, partisan Republicans, while THE WORST PRESIDENT IN HISTORY gets off scot free because the Democrats don't have the guts to pursue it. This despite the fact that Bush lied about the reasons for going to war from the very beginning, and everyone knows it. Clinton's dalliances and immorality notwithstanding, I only hope that causing the unnecessary deaths of thousands of US troops (and tens of thousands of Iraqis) because our president is a petty, vindictive, no-nothing cowboy from Texas will not be ignored by history. Future generations will just wonder what happened to our moral compass and political will.

The problem IS political posturing. Impeachment is not a priority, even though the Iraq war is a high crime. Congress may be loath to prosecute because rolled over to the President. A strong deterrent to future administrations starting wars would be salutary. Consider, for example, pillory of Bush, Cheney, Frist, Hastert, Rice, and Rumsfeld.

It strikes me as odd that we believe it would "take too much time" from productive work to investigate the impeachment of, in my belief, war criminals. We have "taken the time" to prosecute and imprison hundreds of thousands of people in our nation for much lesser offences. I guess some in Germany still think Hitler was good for the country too....wake up gops, it's time to pay the piper!

the Table on Election Day 2008 as it is
high time to hold Mad Madame Nancy Pelosi
and Steny Hoyer and Harry Reid just as fully Accountable and Responsible for their
own actions and complicity by failure to
allow Impeachment of War Criminals President George W Bush and VP Draft Dodger
Cheney and that Pelosi and company therefore are Bush & Cheney Co-War Criminals as well. Lets vote them and every

Pelosi,Reid and Hoyer belong behind bars or

Every Congressman is bound by oath to endorse and support Dennis Kucinich's 35 articles of impeachment. Here's their oath of office:
'I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.'
Everyone should repeat this oath in the ear of their Congressman, and of Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer, John Conyers. Call them through capitol hill at (202)224-3121 and ask them why they are not honoring their oath! Our nation is going down the tubes because the war criminals and back-stabbers are not being put behind bars where they belong. Impeachment hearings may be our only chance to keep the warmongers from attacking Iran! Demand impeachment! Let them feel the heat...

They are being BLACKMAILED to keep impeachment off the table.
What do you think all the domestic spying and wiretapping has been about? Do you really think the administration gives a damn about your dinner plans?
They are spying on their political enemies. That is the ONLY explanation for the unwillingness of this Congress to do what is constitutionally mandated of it ("SHALL" impeach) and it also explains why they have voted as they have.

Bush will simply refuse to step down, then there will be demonstrations, then Blackwater will rough up the crowd (encouraging riots), and with mass disorder FEMA has the legal jurisdiction to disband Congress (this last bit is a fact!). Martial law would be a lot worse.
Posted by: won't happen | June 12, 2008 11:58 AM
Kucinich needs to go back to school, earn his law degree, and spend the next few years studying U.S. and International Law and it's present-day application. Then he might actually have an argument that has some connection to the real world.

The time we spend impeaching the president is certainly time spent "doing productive things for the country" so that no future presidents think they can get away with the same behavior. If you let this man go free for the things he's done, then what's to stop any future president from doing the same thing, with no fear of being punished?

Pelosi has chosen politics over policy and will be remembered by historians as one of the weakest and most ineffective Speakers ever. Her unilateral decision to keep impeachment off the table not only violates her oath to uphold and defend the Constitution, it also violates the People's trust and the global community's confidence in the U.S.'s ability to lead the free world.
Even though the Republicans are reprehensible, I'm going to have a very hard time supporting Democrats come November.

Bush should be impeached; Dick Cheney and Karl Rove should be jailed as "traitors" to this country. The media needs to investigate the accusations, seek the truth and present the evidence. No more "propogandizing" by the media.
