Rep. Cannon Ousted in Utah GOP Primary

Veteran Rep. Chris Cannon won't be serving a seventh term in the House, after voters decisively ousted him Tuesday in Utah's Republican primary.

Jason Chaffetz
, the former chief of staff to Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. (R), beat Cannon by 20 points after a hard-fought campaign during which Chaffetz nearly managed to keep Cannon off the primary ballot altogether at the state GOP convention. Chaffetz will now be heavily favored in November against Democrat Bennion Spencer, as the 3rd district, which stretches southwest of Salt Lake City, is one of the most strongly Republican seats in the country.

Cannon is the third House incumbent to lose a reelection race in the primary this year, following the defeats of Maryland Reps. Al Wynn (D) and Wayne Gilchrest (R) in February.

While Chaffetz's victory could be taken as another sign that a desire for "change" is sweeping the electoral landscape, Cannon has long been on shaky ground in Utah. He also faced tough primaries in 2004 and 2006, largely because of his support for comprehensive immigration reform. Chaffetz similarly hit Cannon for his immigration stance, but the challenger also focused on high gas prices and broad unhappiness with Congress in his campaign.

This post doesn't even scratch the surface on how bad Cannon was. He was so bad he was probably the WaPo's fave congressman. See my roundup here:

Chaffetz says that he is more conservative, yet he runs against Chris, who has one of the most conservative records in the House, while also living outside of the district. Yet in his own district is Rep. Jim Matheson who is a Democrat, who voted for Nanci Pelosi, and who votes very liberal with some conservative votes to appease his constituents. Is it not more conservative to run against the liberal...?
Also, Chris Cannon passed more legislation than all but two members currently serving in Congress. He has passed 14 bills, 2 of which were passed this session while in the minority in congress.
Chris is a remarkably hardworking man, who gets the job done for Utah, and Utah should be ashamed that they lost him and his experience.
Chaffetz has been talking of putting illegal immigrants in Concentration camps, or has been bashing Chris's record, yet he has no record to bash, he is currently unemployed, and what has he done in his life? He has been fired from many of his previous employment... NuSkin, the Huntsman Campaign,
The point is, if Utah won't accept Chris, and his political genius, then they really don't deserve him, this is indeed, a sad day for Utah, choosing a business person who can't hold a real job, over a businessman who has created thousands of jobs in Utah, and ousted a democrat when he took on D-Rep. Bill Orton.
