'Rock Star': You Be the Judge

By Liz Kelly

Truly we live in a wondrous age. We are able to order live Maryland crabs online, watch movies (or parrots) while driving a minivan and, in this era of unprecedented plenty, there is indeed a reality show for everyone.

My reality show is "Rock Star." Yes, it's contrived and a little more Disney than CBGB, but dammit, any show that can recast tattooed former junkies into a lovable panel of show hosts gets my vote as quality entertainment.

L - R: Toby, Patrice, Dilana, Storm, Ryan, Lukas and Zayra. (Getty Images)

This season in particular has captured my imagination. Perhaps because I have a soft spot for Tommy Lee or because Gilby Clarke was a part of Guns N Roses or because Jason Newstead has rocked a Voivod shirt in at least one show a week since the beginning of the competition. I'm not sure why, but I don't want it to end.

Yet, end it must. Next Wednesday night the maker-upper band "Supernova," featuring the above three rockers will choose a lead singer from the four remaining contestants.

This is where the "choose your own adventure" part of this post comes in: If, like me, you are hooked on "Rock Star" click on "continue" below and read my thoughts on who should win the competition and why. If "Rock Star" isn't really your thing, please amuse yourself by uploading your photo to myheritage.com to find out what celebrities you most resemble. (Hilariously, I apparently look like Sheila Majid, Bonnie Pink and Brigitte Bardot. Ummm.)

Right from the start I had two favorites going into this competition. One, Zayra, was knocked out about midway through the season. She wasn't the strongest singer and probably not a good fit for Supernova, but she was definitely an original and that originality set her apart from cookie-cutter crooners like Patrice and Jill. I hope we'll see more from Zayra, who already has one CD under her belt.

Who Should Win
The other favorite is still in the running and if all continues on the same track, he'll take the competition. I'm talking about Toby. He's got everything needed to front the band. He can sing, he's not a ill-fitting prog rock guy like Magni and he's not still wearing "My First Rock Outfit" like poor little Lukas (was anyone else weirded out by Lukas' mommy song?).

And, as proved Tuesday night with his infectious original performance, he's able to effortlessly involve the crowd in a show. And he's just good natured and fun. You can see this guy fitting in well to the Supernova dynamic. And he's hot.

So that's my prediction. What's yours?

Dilana. (Getty Images)

Why Dilana Is So Annoying
Although I wish I was a bigger person, I can't dedicate all this space to "Rock Star" without at least mentioning Dilana and why I'm very glad that she will limp back to her Thunderdome after next week's show.

Without wasting too much space on her, she's talked [expletive] about other contestants, is way too cocky, has a pretty limited vocal range and (I'm convinced) is playing up this pulled muscle for the sympathy vote. And, as noted by a commenter in Dave Navarro's blog, Cheap Trick is not punk, no matter how much you speed it up.

I wash my hands of her.

Why Dave is So Annoying
Jane's Addiction was one of my favorite high school-era bands and I have nothing but love for Dave Navarro, who has got to be the prettiest man in rock and roll. But man, someone please stop this guy from labeling every performance as "the best I've seen yet." Dude, that only works once. (Though Dave gets big props for faithfully blogging his way through the season. He's also created yet another rock-themed reality show picked up by FX.)

Next Season?
"Rock Star" has reportedly been picked up for a third season, but will feature only female vocalists in the competition. While that could be a bit limiting, here's hoping the producers can pull together a talented all female band comprised of, say, former Go-Gos, Bangles, Lita Ford, Linda Perry, Courtney Love -- the list goes on.

Random Weather Questions
Right away, Storm Large reminded me of a soap opera actor. I don't know why. Something about her over-emoted wistfulness and inability to cede the spotlight to others. So it's no surprise that her final night on the show left us with a few cliffhangers. If someone can answer these in the comments section, I would be eternally grateful:
- Why was Jason crying during Storm's performance of "Wish You Were Here?"
- Why couldn't Tommy handle chopping Storm from the show?
- Could Storm's pants have been any lower last night?
- Dave or Tommy?

Gilby Clarke had nothing to do with Appetite for Destruction. He replaced co-founding member Izzy Stradlin. Clarke toured with GNR in the early and mid-1990s, but didn't record any of their original songs.

Oh my gosh. Thanks for making that distinction Jim.

Why is Lukas still here? I'd love to ask Supernova what I'm missing when I watch his performance. He growls and yowls, and somehow that's "emoting." Well, perhaps it is. I do give him credit for performing his own song again, though -- if you're on the edge, might as well go out in a blaze of original glory.

Lukas also has this punky-Marlon-Brando thing going, which is ok, I guess, but his clothes always scream "1980s" to me, and I think that just makes him look a bit out of touch.

Magni's grown on me, but I really think out of the remaining four, Toby is the one best suited to front the band. Here's hoping!

Posted by: Wendy T. | September 7, 2006 11:21 AM | Report abuse

Storm's mother has mental issues, and Storm dedicated this song to her (Pink Floyd's song for thier mentally fallen founder Syd Barrett). I think Jason may have realised this connection.

Posted by: DRE | September 7, 2006 11:28 AM | Report abuse

I've been rooting for Magni ever since he announced, on the first show, "I am probably the tenth most popular singer in Iceland. It's not bragging; it's just the truth." Such an odd boast (and conveniently unverifiable, like a girlfriend who lives "in Canada"). But you're right -- Toby's going to win this thing.

P.S. RockStar can't hold a candle to the "Bands on the Run" show on VH1 all those years ago. That show was the best.

Has anyone seen Storm Large's act. I saw here in Portland, she does an act that could be called loungecore, jass/lounge covers of punk/metal songs. Really good and really profane. I had no idea she was on this show, otherwise I would've watched it. She has a home page, but it is not for public consumption.

Liz, when you say you look like Bridgette Bardot, do you mean "now" or "back in the day"?

Posted by: Bunkley | September 7, 2006 11:46 AM | Report abuse

Go Toby! Australians will always come out on top. God Bless America!

Posted by: Peter | September 7, 2006 12:31 PM | Report abuse

Don't shortchange Magni. He's the one participant to whom you provided no link. He's probably the most talented, most professional and most solid of the group. If Tommy Lee et al. would go his direction, they might be a more than 'New Old Kids on the Block' phenom; as they are likely to be w/Toby.
Toby, by the way, is great as a lead guy for what it seems TL et al. prefer to do, and I like him.
Say what you want, but Storm's Bowie/Original combo Tues. was as hot as it gets(in the non XXX genre)as Dave(my pick in the Dave/TL musing) pointed out; they would be backing her up.
Dilana and Lukas both have issues, but talent as well, so I won't be surprised to see more of both on their own.
Overall, this year's crop is parsecs ahead of last year's crew. The show has been an enjoyable summer diversion and is a lot of fun.

Posted by: Dave | September 7, 2006 12:33 PM | Report abuse

i agreed with ALMOST everything you said...

but the zayra comment - oh how horrible it was watching her screech out her rock ballads!!

she was horrible. HORRIBLE. i refer you back to her 'CALL ME' & 'JENNY' performances. truly horrible. she didnt have a clue and gilby clarke brought that to everyones attention on the 2nd or 3rd show..

Dilana was my favority cause she was like a little tommy lee. but with all the whiny drama, i have given in to toby. he is the man for the group.

again, i refer u to zayra's performances. (her original song was the best of the season for her, but alas, SUPERNOVA wont be doing too many ballads.)

Posted by: xray | September 7, 2006 12:37 PM | Report abuse

Remember that cartoon "Captain Caveman"? That's who Lukas sounds like when he sings!
Dilana sounds like a 'hopped up on testosterone' version of Melissa Ethridge...if that's possible.
Magni's got a wife and family and just like Steve Perry said 'being apart aint easy on this love affair.'
Pass the "chaize froys plaze" Toby wins!

Posted by: J.David | September 7, 2006 12:41 PM | Report abuse

It always seemed to me like Tommy had a crush on Storm Large. Maybe that's just me, but I think that's why he couldn't handle "tommyhawking" her.

And Tommy over Dave...I dunno why, but Dave creeps me out. He needs to wear a shirt for once that's not unbuttoned!

Posted by: SJ | September 7, 2006 12:41 PM | Report abuse

I didn't really notice until now, but 3/4 of the judging panel consists of replacement players. Gilby replace Izzy. Jason replaced Cliff Burton. Dave replaced (and was subsequently replaced by) the guy from the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

And there it is.

Posted by: Damian | September 7, 2006 12:42 PM | Report abuse

I do think toby has the edge over everybody especially now with the Honda
I liked Lukas and his voice (which I think has potential) his style leaves you wondering but as a rocker you can do weird things...he definetly different and is entertaining
Toby is hot...and is leading the pack
Magni seems ok but not enough
Dilana has just come apart for me and the last weeks have been torture watching her I don't think she is strong enough emotionally, as well as skill wise in songwriting and appeal

Posted by: Miriam | September 7, 2006 12:46 PM | Report abuse

Say what you will about Lukas, but I can't get that song out of my head... "You make my head spin, you make my head spin..."

Posted by: Scott | September 7, 2006 12:50 PM | Report abuse

Ringtail -- really? Even after Toby's been selected for the encore for the past two weeks? I just don't see it with Lukas. I think he's lost whatever momentum he had in the earlier episodes.

Ronnie -- re: Bands on the Run. Totally agreed. Go Flickerstick!

Posted by: Liz | September 7, 2006 12:51 PM | Report abuse

Sorry, Liz, but I think you know Toby won't win. For some reason, the band (Jason especially) are fixated on Lukas -- or as I and my girlfriend like to call him, Chipmunkhead. I don't know why; the dude sounds like he swallowed a Muppet.

Personally, I'm a Magni devotee. He's consistent, and I like the way his veins bulge from the side of his head when he's letting loose. It just doesn't seem like Tommy and the Gang think he has enough of a distinguishing characteristic.

Posted by: Ringtail | September 7, 2006 12:53 PM | Report abuse

Why the hate for Dilana? It seems like you're playing right into the producer's hands here -- for whatever reason, they've been an anti-Dilana rampage recently. (My wife thinks its been to make it more of a competition, for a while she was way up on top.) Granted, her comments and behavior were obnoxious and not very savvy, but ask anyone who's been on reality TV: when you boil down a weeks worth of video to a few minutes, you can make things seem however you want.

The simple fact is, she's the best singer on the show, period. Vocally, she delivers every time, she's got a unique smoky timbre an incredible range, and it would be lame to see her passed over because of what happens off-stage.

Posted by: Chodeo | September 7, 2006 12:59 PM | Report abuse

Rock is eating itself and we're watching it. This is overproduced, contrived crap. This is a reality show? Nothing could be more phony. Maybe Rock died a long time ago and no one really noticed. This would then be the maggots exploding from the bowels to feed on what the vultures didn't eat.

Posted by: J | September 7, 2006 12:59 PM | Report abuse

I totally agree with you Liz. I can't stand Dilana and wish she would just go far, far away. I think Toby will win, but I do really like Magni as well. I just think he would be better suited somewhere else. Also, Toby, Magni and Storm's original songs are better than anything "Supernova" has previewed the last couple of weeks. Their tunes were awful. Hell, I even like Ryan's song better than that crap they have put on that last couple of weeks. I love Tommy, but they seem a bit desperate. Oh, and Tommy any day over day. Dave is WAY TOO PRETTY.... :-)

Posted by: Michelle | September 7, 2006 1:04 PM | Report abuse

You all should check out Ryan Star's 2004 album- it's GREAT. It's like Kurt Cobain meets Coldplay meets Pearl Jam meets Liz Phair. He would have been selling out as Supernova's lead singer. His real talent is playing his own songs.

I have to pick Tommy- he's gotten way hotter through the years and also Dave Navarro is just a little bit gay for me.

Posted by: Jane | September 7, 2006 1:07 PM | Report abuse

Jane, you just sold me on the Star album..... Coldplay meets Pearl Jam... I am in love... Do you know the name? Nevermind I will just google him...

Michelle- I believe it's Songs from the Eye of the Elephant or something like that. I absolutely LOVE IT. You can get it on ITunes- 20 songs for 9.99. Very deep angst filled piano type stuff.

Posted by: Jane | September 7, 2006 1:12 PM | Report abuse

I can't figure out why Lukas is still in the competition. Storm's pants were way too low. Finally, how come the singers aren't singing songs by Metallica, Iron Maiden Judas Priest etc. As far as Ic an tell on these shows they continue to sing classic rock stuff. It doesn't seem to fit with an ex-Metallica Flotsam and Jetsom (now Voi Vod) bassist, the Motley Crue drummer, and an ex-GNR guitarist. Personally, it just doesn't seem to fit to have the singers sing identical songs to those who were in the running for the INXS position. Let's see some more hard rock and metal songs since that is what Supernova presumably is.

Posted by: Todd swartz | September 7, 2006 1:23 PM | Report abuse

Well, apparently I (a chick) look like James Spader. And you know what, they're right! I never would have known...only much, much prettier of course.

Posted by: celebrity twins | September 7, 2006 1:29 PM | Report abuse

I agree with pretty much all of your comments - TOBY!! Magni would be my second choice if I had to pick one. Lucas is scary, but he can sing. Toby is just more fun to watch and listen to.

As for Dave or Tommy - tough choice but Tommy wins in my book.

Posted by: Barbie | September 7, 2006 1:31 PM | Report abuse

I agree with Chodeo. Dilana was blowing away the entire field until for whatever reason (ask PRODUCER Dave) they decided to do that slash-and-burn piece on her a couple of weeks ago. Notice that no one else on the show has had any in-depth features showing their negative sides, and in the hundreds of hours of film they've shot you know there had to be more than a few. And yet the band gets on TV every week and tells her how great she is, probably because she still blows away most of the field (exception Toby). Maybe they decided they did't want a woman to front the band, and when the votes go away they have an excuse to dump her. Cheap shot.

Posted by: vbxtc | September 7, 2006 1:33 PM | Report abuse

Zayra? I have to agree with xray that she was horrible. Terrible ratio of perceived/real talent.

I loved Storm, even if she wasn't right for the band. I hope the exposure she receives from Rockstar will help her along in some way.

Dilana and Lukas are freaks, and that isn't all bad. However, neither one especially impresses me with their range or versitility. Both can handle their core competency very well, but seem to have difficulty outside of that.

Either Magni or Toby should win. Since I doubt Supernova will be more than a one-tour phenomenon, I'd say Toby gets them a better value for their buck on a tour.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 7, 2006 1:53 PM | Report abuse

Thanks so much Liz for devoting a day to Rockstar! I don't feel so ashamed anymore in being an almost 40 professional obsessed with this show. First off, kudos to the production team for making this season so much fun to watch: way better talent pool than last year, plus the clinics and competition for the most part do have some relevance to music. That said, I totally agree with your pick for the winner. The way I figure it, TL is in love with Lukas, Gilby has some unfathomable fascination with Dilanna, and I think Jason favors Magni. Toby then emerges is the concensus pick, the one contestant they all like. I personally like Magni the best, love his voice and actually enjoy the fact that he doesn't strut, stomp and scream around the stage.

As for Storm, according to her blog her mom died last year and had been mentally ill for a long time. BTW, does anyone else have to fight back the image of Storm with that ab tatoo at 70?? yeech. Even so, I wish they would have given Dillana the axe first.

Maybe Tommy's trying to rehabilitate his wife beater image and that's why he has such a hard time saying adios to the lady contestants...just a thought.

Posted by: deb | September 7, 2006 1:56 PM | Report abuse

Deb, don't feel bad... I am 36 and obsessed as well. And I am with you on the other items as well... Gilby loves dilana and I just don't know why. She just doesn't seem well rounded (ie I didn't like her original song). I did enjoy Toby's performance, but love Magni. I just think Toby fits the band best. I think Tommy wants to sleep with Storm and that is why he could cut her lose! As for Lukas, I don't feel him. It appears as though he is trying way to hard with his look. I think I would like him better in some jeans and t-shirt. And I hate the hurky-jerky thing he does when he is singing...

Posted by: Michelle | September 7, 2006 2:15 PM | Report abuse

I do not like Lukas at all. He unoriginal and looks like Eddie Munster... and his voice range is very limited to screams and growls. I am so over emo rock.
I loved Zayra as well. She was the most original and bravest singer on the show. Was she right for Supernova? hell no! But I loved watching her perform.
Dilana is beginning to bore me... she's a one trick pony with a less than dynamic voice.
Storm was my pick, but oh well. I'm now rooting for Magni, but I have surrendered to Toby's imminent win.
Dave over TL. He's very intelligent and would hold my attention a whole lot longer than the antics of TL.

"Storm Large"? That name just does not make sense. "Stormy Weathers" (from Short Cuts) I can understand. Ditto "Dusty Rhodes". But "Storm Large" sounds like mistranslated stereo instructions.

Posted by: Wilson | September 7, 2006 2:23 PM | Report abuse

It would be a lot better if Tommy Lee could stop himself from harassing the female contestants for just a few moments. That dude is so one-dimensional its painful.

Posted by: Ignatius | September 7, 2006 2:27 PM | Report abuse

Thanks Michelle for the support--I don't feel so alone anymore!:) I like Toby too. He's very fun to watch, can certainly sing well and is cute. A good choice for the band I think. Anyone else (since we know it won't be Magni) will feel like such a let-downto me. I just don't see the Lukas thing. Inspiring? Pleeese. Even if I could past his appearence (I'm with Liz on the 80's look), the hurky-jerky thing is so annoying and I can't understand what he's singing!

Was it just me or did Gilby diss Magni on stage last night. Why?

Posted by: deb | September 7, 2006 2:39 PM | Report abuse

Bumbling cover of Cheap Trick aside, I still think Dilanna will come out on top. She's sounded the best singing with the band by FAR, she's easily the best showman (who decorated those crutches - Steven Tyler?!) and her voice and image fit in with the group better than any of the remaning singers. Lukas, for all his creepy oedipal odes, probably has the next best shot.
I can't understand how Magni is still around. He butchered the song with the band last night and just looks completely out of sync with the band...he's a prog metalhead while they're all various shades of burnt.
Toby could come out of nowhere to take it all, but I think his run comes to an end next week...he just doesn't have any "edge" and is pretty damn uninteresting. From a marketing standpoint, he's a disaster.

Posted by: Steve | September 7, 2006 2:46 PM | Report abuse

I hope that Lukas wins because I think he is the only real "rock star" among the contestants. I wouldn't want to be the guys best friend, but I think he is the best match for Supernova both vocally and personality wise . Lukas reminds me of a young Tommy Lee who can also be annoying but is always entertaining to watch and is very talented. So many of the great rock stars are cocky jerks but that's part of the reason people love them.

I couldn't care less to see any of these hacks and has beens 'perform' other than to further humiliate themselves...can we get them to don monkey costumes and smash cymbals together while the audience throws rotten fruit at them?

So Rockstar has given us an American (yes?) singer for an Australian band, and (if Toby wins) an Australian singer for an American band?

Thanks, Liz, for bring up RS:SN. I'm 50, one of my best friends is 60, and we're like silly schoolgirls on RS nights, calling each other at each commercial. Pathetic, but great fun.

Toby to win -- after all, he's got their first hit song (nothing else RS has done can be listened to for more than 3 minutes), plus he brings them a lot of energy. TL and the boys will need to start working out and stop smoking in order to keep up with the kid, though.

Magni - good performer, solid as a rock, but. . . a teeny bit boring.

Dilana - fruitcake. Would those guys really want to tour with her? And that "calf injury" -- pleeeeze, she was kicking that leg up like a Rockette.

Lukas - Beetlejuice meets Joe Cocker. Ick. Would not buy RS CD if Lukas fronts it.

Anyone notice that when the SN boys sing on Wednesday nights, it's shown on film, while the rest of the show is on videotape?

Why was Jason crying? Maybe it's that the sound and mood of the live performance is way lost when re-mixed and transmitted? Or maybe The Professor is just a bit more of a softy than he likes to let on?

Why couldn't TL chop Stormie? Because he's just a big teddy bear moosh and he really, really likes Storm.

DAVE -- all the way. I've been reading his blogs for a couple of months now, read part of his bio and will be getting his autobbio. Some may be less than impressed with his GQ approach to being a Rocker, but he's kind hearted, sincere, honest, and a mensch through and through. Considering the details of his life, what he's overcome, etc., there are few who been through it and come out so well-rounded on the other end. Kudos and respect for him. Hope he follows through and works with Storm.

First off, Zayra, (Ms. Peanut) may have been good dada art or comic relief, but musically? Come on. That one really makes me question your judgment.

Of the final four, Lucas is in the unfortunate position of looking too much like an Umpa Lumpa to be taken seriously as a frontman. That is perhaps sad, but in the age of overproduced, "maggots exploding from the bowels" rock'n'roll, its deadly.

My wife likes Dilana. While it disturbs me that her original song was so, um, unoriginal, her arrangements of other people's songs are creative, interesting, and often amazing. (By the way, her "Ring of Fire" versus Chris Daughtry's "I Walk the Line" makes the point nicely for Rock Star over that other musical reality show.)

Toby? Here's the deal: he dedicated a song to the Crocodile Hunter. If his demeanor didn't already place him in a long line of Aussie self-parodies, this hamhanded, self-serving tribute certainly should. Let him front a revived Men At Work.

That leaves: Magni. He has got an effortless credibility singing songs that relate to what will be Supernova's core audience: late 20s to early 40s males. They need an update of Motley Crue, GNR, and Metallica to remind them of their glory days without making it all seem irrelevant or old. Magni has just enough crossover into U2, grunge, Radiohead, Coldplay, and others to update the 80s-to-early-90s giants with enough metal chops to do a mean cover of "Fade to Black." Magni has also been shown to be a consummate musician, helpful to others, and an even keeled guy.

If Supernova is going for one overproduced hit/tour, maybe Toby's the choice--he probably beats Magni among the young female demographic at least. Looking back a year ago, though, INXS took someone who, though a little uneven, was squarely within their style of music. Magni's not even uneven, and I bet style of music wins out again.

Posted by: Wrongo--Magni Wins! A Fate | September 7, 2006 3:39 PM | Report abuse

Kregg-I'm think JD Fortune (winner from Rockstar: INXS) is Canadian but don't quote me on that.

I'm sad Storm was cut from the show before Lukas and/or Dilana. Lukas drives me insane with his gravel-y, unintelligble mumbling (chipmunkhead is the best nickname for him). Dilana's voice has some range, but she has proven unable to harness it. Magni and Toby are my top two and it's too hard to choose an outright winner. I definitely agree that the talent this year far surpasses last year (although Marty Casey and his band's latest album is killer and Mig's performance of Live and Let Die last year was the best ever on the show, despite what Dave says).

Ryan Star's solo album has been on repeat since I bought it on Monday. I haven't checked out his band Stage, but they're on iTunes for those interested.

Also, Dave Navarro over TLee.

For weeks I've wondered why the Supernova performances are on film instead of on tape. I've wondered if they're "live" performances at all, making the rest of the hour completely bogus if they're not. I'll watch through next week's finale, though, despite Storm's dispatch last night, she was my choice. I wanted to go out and buy her song "Ladylike" the day after she performed it. Hmm, Eddie Munster, yeah, that's who Lukas looks like. And his guttural wailing "you make my HEAD SPIN", to his MOTHER, that was frightening. Maybe Dilana was set up by editing, but she's been annoying all season, and she's looked like a psychedelic bag lady. Magni just doesn't deliver enough. I'm expecting Toby to be fronting Supernova in Las Vegas on New Year's Eve and for their planned tour. But then the band will break up.

I'm so glad Storm was eliminated last night---she reminds me of mannish Melissa Ethridge more than Dilana. Dilana is more like a mutant Cyndi Lauper. Storm's pants were unfashionably low and her daddy tattoo is just creepy. That said I think Toby is going to wine it. He is sexy in a mainstream, nonthreatening way. I'm tired of his "run out in the audience" schtick, and the all of the Aussie cliches he seems to embody, but Americans love Yellowtail why not Toby... How about dedicating his performance to the Crocodile Hunter last night? UGH! Even though I've been smirking in agreement with those of you who called Lukas chipmunk head and "my first rockstar"---i like the little guy. I'd like to see some better hair on him sure but edward scissorhands was kind of sexy wasn't he? I hope Lukas wins. Choosing Toby will make it just another pretty-boy contest. I also pick Dave. Tommy Lee is too skinny and obviously a complete nerd. Dave looks like he was carved from a beautiful piece of wax and he looks great when the light hits him just so.

The only thing to 'supernova's credit is that they pulled in some contestants who are real, dedicated musicians who actually have slugged it out in clubs and on the circuit.

The only reason I watched was to see how Storm Large did. (it's her real name, but she's also 6' and athletic) Through the 90s Storm and her bands were one of the main reasons to go to a live show in SF. When I took my (now) wife to see her, she was awestruck. I remember seeing Storm rock so hard onstage in 105 degree heat at a festival, she collapsed! 5 minutes later she was back. she's the real deal and navarro et al know it.

but they never planned to have a girl front them--toby's song speaks to the beer-swilling masses, Storm's song speaks to empowered women--which one sells more?

Storm's live presence didn't translate well on TV, but at least now the world knows she's here. I'm sure she'll be seen more and more.

but the new super nova band is just a cash cow. who cares?

Do I get points for being the last poster of the day?

Give Tommy about 5 more years, and he will have the exact face of Keith Richards.

Speaking of Storms Pants being to low...(that was the worst outfit yet), why are Tommy's pants so low ??? Could he please just pull them up...just a little. Maybe He and Storm could help each other out in that department. It's obvious he wants her, or has had her already...

Dave over Tommy any day. He is much more evolved in many ways.

By the way who is dressing Brooke Burke ??? She does not need to look like a cheezy rocker chick, really the outfits are horrible..

With all that said...being 40 something myself, I am absolutely hooked on the show. I am not one for reality shows, but this one rocks. Using Tivo has been a great way fast forward and get to the good stuff. Sorry, Lukas, I almost always have to fast forward you dude.....looks like Toby will win it, but who knows...as much as I like the Show, I won't be buying tickets to see the Band.

Is there anyone under 30 watching this show? You have to think the target audience wasn't 30-60 year old women...or was it?

I do see the appeal of Toby, I do see the solidness of Magni(and yes,a bit boring) I do see the weridness but talent of Lukas, but I love what a range and power that Dilana has with her voice. Having been misquoted and flummoxed by press myself in the past, I know she will be more careful, and the show dwelling on her about it is unprofessional. I am a 46year old, and have never watched a reality show before, but am loving this one. And yes, the INXS winner is Canadian. And was I the only one who found Ryan to be arrogant?

I personally love Lukas but I wonder who else is actually voting for him since the vast majority of posts written about him are negative. Lukas has only been in the final bottom 3 once so obviously some people must like him. Maybe he is more popular outside of North America?

I have become completely absorbed in Rockstar. I don't even listen to rock, but I was flipping around and saw Dilana and I became hooked. Little did I know that Dilana, my original choice to win, would have a complete meltdown. After that my thought was, she is outta here! There is no way those 3 manly, studly rockers are going to take a tactless, emotionally challenged woman on the road. Now that I have seen her for several weeks, I realize that Dilana's range is limited.

Anyway, now I think this contest is Toby's to lose. I loved his original song and I loved it when he sang with Tommy and the guys.

I wouldn't mind if Magni got it, but I absolutely can't see Lukas winning. I can't even stand to watch him perform. He is creepy and that mother song did not help. I just can't see him standing in front of those guys night after night. They aren't a match.

Lastly, I almost hope Zayra comes back -- I need a laugh. My favorite response from the 3 guys was when she finished her song and they said -- We need 6 minutes to recover and went to commercial. She is hilarious.

When is/was the vote for which axed rocker gets to come back to perform again?

"...those 3 manly, studly rockers..."

You have got to be kidding me.

I see where some of you are coming from with the 'Magni is boring', comments. But I think he, being the solid pro he is, has held back, not wanting to be critiqued for utilizing cheap "tricks"(a la Gilbey's slam on Jill for "grinding"-I don't know why anyone would want that weenie in their r'n r' band-as well as the poke at Toby for the megaphone bit-which I thought worked). Ryan was getting too lame w/the stunts and was in danger of injuring himself or others,so that's why he had to be checked out early. Magni, on the other hand, would be the type to incorporate some thought-out choreography into a well designed show, and pull it off with aplomb and authority. Musically, he's past these old guys(as we saw is Storm as well),so, they would do well to give him a close ear on content while concentrating their expertise on logistics and business. That said, it appears the young girl crowd is the target, and that means Toby-who is likable and talented and seems to have a pair, unlike much of what passes for manly in rock today-will take it.I just hope the gig doesn't prove a drag on his career. Magni and Storm I hope go on to carving illustrious domains of their own.

Where did you study music Liz?

You're dead wrong about Magni... no further comment.
