Hollywood's Best Night
Harbingers of spring take many forms -- bulbs peeking through barren flower beds, groundhogs ripped from underground hideaways and, for folks like me, the Hollywood awards season. This last phenomenon officially kicked off last night as the beautiful, the buzzed about and even the Borats gathered as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association handed out the Golden Globes.
For many awards devotees, me included, the Globes are a favored treat. There is a casual, nurturing aura organic to the event, as if no one is unwelcome -- not even TV stars or Sharon Stone -- and no fashion flub is really that dire -- even Cameron Diaz's stark new look or Jeremy Irons's pajama tux ensemble. The round tables, the free-flowing alcohol and the constant background conversation give the night a familial feeling. We know this scene. This is a cousin's wedding, a favorite uncle's wake. We are bemused by Abigail Breslin's evident pride in her big girl clothes and we look fondly, approvingly on Jack Nicholson's 16-year-old daughter -- serving as the night's "Miss Golden Globe."
The Globes are generally considered a good indicator of next month's Academy Award winners and, like any other attempt to handicap a contest, the formula works sometimes. Still, I revel in the Globes for their own sake, not for any insight into what may happen the next time these people gather to give out statues. With that in mind, here are a few of my favorite moments from last night:
-- Jennifer Hudson accepting the award for best supporting actress, musical or comedy: "You do not know how much this does for my confidence." (More Memorable Quotes)
-- Justin Timberlake's impersonation of Prince, who wasn't present when he won for "Happy Feet's" best original song.
-- Bill Nighy, who said until he'd received one, he'd always thought of the Golden Globes as rather meaningless. (More British Wit)
Oddly, none of my favorite moments included obnoxious pre-show host Ryan Seacrest, who -- if an award for most-contrived, annoying and corny banter existed -- would have won.

On the show: Yaaaawwwwn!
Sasha Cohen must have thought that he was on Fox. NBC execs must be getting a lot of flack today from Family Research Council types.
Jack Bauer's nuke went off at the right time, just in the wrong part of Los Angeles.
Aren't the Olson twins getting creepy? Which one should take over as Lily Munster, now that Yvonne Decarlo passed away?

C'mon, Miz Liz. This is the Post! You're not "bemused" by Abigail's pride unless you really find it baffling. It's not just a spiffier way of saying "amused" -- honest! And "chat up" and "chat with" aren't synonyms either.
But we love you anyway. Keep up the good work!

Good Lord! What bizarre form of occular giantism do they suffer from? Overactive thyroid?

--marc anthony looks like j.lo has sucked the life out of him.
--did cameron have a boobectomy? or were they not there to start with?
--sasha's speech was a bit jarring for tv, but hilarious just the same.
--reese looks none the worse for wear.
--hugh laurie has to be one of the funniest men on the planet.

the olsen twins make me think of ellen degeneres asking the raccoon in that amex commercial: "Does this side look too heavy?"

Where can I find pictures of all the OTHER GG people--you know, the ones that aren't in the Post gallery?
I didn't get to watch last night and want to catch up with all the gossip on dresses etc, but half of them aren't on the Post!

What was wrong with Angelina at the Globes? She looked like she did not want to be there. She was a wet blanket.
I thought Hugh Lauries speech was hillarious.

angelina looked like the bride of frankenstein...not matter how much you dress her up...she still looks like a hooker...or in last night's case, a miserable hooker. she has no joi de vivre.

Yeah, that Olsen twin still needs a hamburger. Well, either one, really.

LIZ: What's up with the transcript? It's cut off after 3 questions.

I didn't watch the show last night (Jack Bauer trumps Globes and day) but I have to argue that Billy Bush wins the award for most-contrived, annoying and corny banter.

The Olsen's have made enough money by now to have a stylist on call 24/7. What on earth is going on in that picture? How cold does LA get that one of them needs a stole or half dead bear slung across the shoulder?
There weren't many misses last night, fashion wise. The usual suspects (Jeremy Irons and others) followed the same scary path as before. Not really digging Reese's outfit. Abigail Breslin looked cute and properly dressed for her age. Hopefully it lasts long into her career.
Does anyone know where I can see Sasha Baron Cohen and Hugh Laurie's speeches? I love it when he wins stuff the response is always hilarious. I keep hearing about Sasha's speech, switched back at the part where he thanked everyone who hadn't sued him yet.

KG:
I have to respectfully disagree, Billy Bush is the (insert respected journalist name here) of entertainment/gossip news. That award you mentioned, can't not be pried from the steely grip of Ryan Seacrest.

I thought Abigail Breslin's outfit was adorable! And quite appropriate both for her age and for the occassion, which is hard enough for adults to pull off, let alone pre-teens.

I think the suite borgen was wearing summed up the show...boring as heeeeeeeeeeeeeeell

Technical difficulties w/ the transcript, NB. I broked it. We're fixing it now.

I was hoping the Olsons would wear their usual leggings and heavy black boots, making them look like tap-dancing spiders.
Just goes to show that money does not equal taste.
And do they have teeth? Do they always just smirk like that? Or did the bulimia rot them out, or what?

I fear the Olsen twins are the female answer to Michael Jackson. Maybe they've not gone the surgery route, but for sure the weird route. In both cases, they sure were cute when they were young ....

Checking out the Yahoo homepage "Best and Worst Dressed"...think they got mixed up on most.
Though, Kate Winslet did look probably the best. Also F. Whittaker's wife.

We obcess with style and looks to the degree that we comments on what is worn around us. Who really cares what someone looked like, or what they wore, as long as they showered and don't smell. Go Jack take us on a wild ride away from all this hollywood self agrandisement. And yes, Angelina was not there.
