Rosie and Donald -- Enough Already!
It was Rosie O'Donnell, I believe, who first took Donald Trump to task for presuming to act as the "moral compass" for young American women. To paraphrase, she asked how this man -- who had two divorces and some possible extra-marital affairs under his belt -- could presume to decide what constitutes acceptable behavior for Miss USA, to whom he granted a second chance after she was caught doing a little underage drinking.
I agreed with Rosie at the time, but like most Americans, assumed Trump was exploiting the Tara Conner incident to buy the pageant (which he owns) and himself a little time in the sun.
But three weeks later, this thing has had enough sun to cause first-degree burns and instead of consolidating support for her initial good read of the situation, Rosie has lost all credibility, and proved herself to be as petty and headline-hungry as Trump. And -- this is good -- Rosie somehow managed to drag Barbara Walters down from Mount Olympus into the gutter, with Walters yesterday calling Trump a "poor, pathetic man" on the air.
I haven't seen this level of name-calling since I hunkered down in the corner of my eighth-grade lunch room, laughing into my Hawaiian Punch can as tables of adolescent boys beat their chests and hurled escalating variations of girlie-man/punk/your mama comments at each other.
But I'm not in eighth grade anymore and this back-and-forth bitchfest is about as compelling to my adult tastes as the dying form of entertainment known as the beauty pageant.
So, I hope I speak for America when I say I don't want Donald Trump deciding what constitutes appropriate antics for a 20-year-old woman, but neither do I want anyone taking cues from Trump, Walters or O'Donnell on how to relate to other human beings.
Enough already, you three. You're fired.

clap, clap, clap!
Now if we could just get these overgrown children (who are setting bad examples for our true children) just sit down and be quiet for once-- Someone needs a timeout!

No kidding!!!
They are SO annoying!

But I thought that this type of thing was exactly what your blog is all about?
If they all stop, what will you write about?
Posted by: SoMD | January 11, 2007 11:14 AM
Yeah, originally the ongoing debate was entertaining but now it's getting downright sad.
Posted by: Anonymous | January 11, 2007 11:17 AM
Donald and Rosie are both crass people and nothing they do should ever be surprising, but for Barbara Walters to throw her integrity away by participating in this garbage is truly pathetic.

Word. BaWa must really be scared that stupid show will tank w/out RoDo.

oh jesus liz lighten up a bit we know you dont speak for all americans! its just so much fun when my favorite lipstick lesbian and a knowitall capitalist fight in public! and remember no-one is forced to watch or read about them. they are much more fun than the bush/cheney clowns! and its all for free!

This ferret fight has me nostalgically longing for the good old days of pure and innocent TV, like when Connie Chung would grunt while navigating herself to the ground from the heights of a grand piano, sing poorly while traipsing around the set of her cancelled show, and fall to the floor in her form-fitting gown. Memories...

Can this please be the last post about this ridiculous arguement...I love your column Liz but I'm sooo tired (hopefully along with everyone else) of it. I can't even turn on the Today show without having to hear about it. They need to act their age and get over it. How do they expect to be role models for the young children they have?
Posted by: sunpop | January 11, 2007 11:39 AM
I concur. You fell into their trap by perpetuating the "feud." Crap, I just perpetuated it by call it "feud."

This is why Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton, and Britney will never go away. Rosie and Donald are easily 20 years their senior, and they act just as catty, clawing over each other to be the last in the public eye.
I look forward to being on my deathbed and seeing the lazy-eyed Paris Hilton staring back from the holographic projector telling me "that's hot!" May Paris and Britney enjoy their long reign.
Posted by: Ken | January 11, 2007 11:46 AM
To WILLEM: Lipstick lesbian? In who's universe is Rosie hot enough to be labeled a lipstick lesbian? Can you truly compare Rosie to, let's say, Portia de Rossi?
Posted by: Dave | January 11, 2007 11:50 AM
Rosie O is not a lipstick lesbian. Being one myself...I should know. Her wife is one, but definately not Ro, she falls in the casual lesbian, Not quite Sporty, and not quite femmy catagory. More of the plain Jane variety. (If you must categorize, which for some reason makes everyone more comforatable). (PS - most lesbians can be categorized into the "spice girls" Sproty, Baby, Scary, etc...)

Liz, we need a two-step program to cure the addiction to this subject. Step one - stop talking about it. Step two - it goes away...
Posted by: tired too | January 11, 2007 12:04 PM
I think they should continue until everyone gets so sick and tired of them they get voted off the planet. As a precautionary step let's add Barbara as well, she's tainted now. When's the next shuttle launch?
Or the celeb death match. If the shuttle launch is too far off, a celeb death match can be the quick and dirty method of ending this.
Posted by: petal | January 11, 2007 12:08 PM
Here's the thing, folks. Even if this thing with Trump were to stop tomorrow, Rosie would be back in this column in under a month having said something else to piss off 1/3 of the viewing public. She *cannot* help herself.
Posted by: 23112 | January 11, 2007 12:11 PM
One cable channel that gives more time to this than most and most definitely favors Trump (I assume because of the relative politics of the parties involved) is Fox News. Their hosts and commentators love Trump, and often have him on the line to comment on Rose (and, occasionally, less weighty matters he is apparently an expert on, such as the administratio of the United Nations). This morning, when other channels concentrated on Bush´s speech, Fox and Friends gave more time to the Trum-Rose feud, calling Trump a straight-shooter. If Trulmp and Rose went away tomorrow, who would really care?
Posted by: Steve | January 11, 2007 12:16 PM
Amen, Liz! Enough is enough. If you really mean it, though, and don't want to perpetuate it any more, please vow never to write about it in Celebritology again!
And WILLEM, I think you need your eyes checked.
Posted by: fft5305 | January 11, 2007 12:27 PM
Amen, Liz.
But reading about D.Trump and Fat-not-Lipstick Lesbian Loudmouth is far more comforting than reading about the deaths in Iraq. Which is why we're talking about it now. Still. More. Again. Forever.
Do lesbians really like being categorized like the Spice Girls?! How fun! But then again, would you like to be the Scary Lesbian? I mean, Mel B. is actually not that scary (well, before she got knocked up with Eddie's baby, yes I believe it's his kid!)...
And what about Ginger Lesbian? Seems kind of broad, all red-heads? Explain.
Posted by: miss belle | January 11, 2007 12:31 PM
She is vile, rude, and a bore. Donald might be behaving badly in this drawn-out drama, but she is the one that started it and continues to drag it out even more.
Posted by: Schleprock | January 11, 2007 12:42 PM
Hey Liz -- Normally, I agree with you -- this time I don't -- I really don't think Rosie looks bad after this -- if anything, she looks funnier -- whereas, Trump looks like a bigger jerk everyday. I think Babwa didn't help the situation by talking out of both sides of her mouth to these figures.
Posted by: M | January 11, 2007 12:51 PM
Thank you, thank you! This whole thing does not qualify as news as all, even in celebrity-land, which has pretty low standards. And definitely agree with the other poster re Fox News - they LOVE this because Rosie is the perfect bad girl for their viewing audience. On the right-wingnut Hate Scale, she's almost up there with Hillary.
Posted by: JI | January 11, 2007 1:05 PM
What makes Rosie so righteous?
This is gross by the way. There's no way anyone views her as a role model.
She's a fat slob with a big mouth. I can't believe Barbara Walters stuck up for her.
Posted by: DT | January 11, 2007 1:12 PM
At least Donald is funny. Whenever Rosie talks she's like an adult on a Charlie Brown cartoon.
wawawawawawaaawawa

I've heard speculation that Trump is trying to use this to promote the Apprentice, esp after his "I am a ratings magnet" comment.
Not from me, sweetheart. I'll never tune your hijinks in again. If that show tanks then maybe your ego will deflate accordingly.
Wasn't there something about a horrid smell in NYC?
Posted by: Barb | January 11, 2007 1:23 PM
Duh. Stop writing about it.

Madonna seems to have entered the fray in defense of Rosie.
Good grief, who's next?
Posted by: jlr | January 11, 2007 1:45 PM
Do you think if we ignore them, they'll go away?
Posted by: sjf | January 11, 2007 1:56 PM
Did anyone happen to see the Maureen Dowd column about this two Saturdays ago? She practically genuflected at the Trump throne. No doubt concerned about her future party invitations. Gave her readers the total Trump line, with hook and sinker included. PS, when Rosie had her ill-fated rag, everyone hated her there because she is an obnoxious loudmouth. She is still one only more so, and Walters buys in because she sees a small ratings bump. No wonder the terrorists hate us.

And just today Liz posted that there were words between Geraldo and Keith Olbermann.
I propose a new reality TV show: "Celebrity Piefight" where appropriate groups (Rosie/Baba/Donald, Geraldo/Keith, Lindsay/Brittany, Paris/Nicole) hurl epithets and creme pies at each other
Posted by: Slapschtick Lover | January 11, 2007 2:00 PM
I have to add that, in fact, Trump started it when we went up to Rosie and meanly congratulated her on the failure of her magazine. How can anyone sympathize with a nasty person like that?
Posted by: yehadut | January 11, 2007 2:12 PM
I don't think its fair to say Rosie "started" the whole thing. I mean, The View is supposed to be about airing opinions and making big value judgements...its her job. I don't think what she said about Trump initially was that big a deal (not Clay and Kelly big). But yeah, its gotten way out of proportion since then. Its gross and ugly and I'm glad you're calling them out on it Liz.
Posted by: Omaha | January 11, 2007 2:16 PM
What's interesting is that this is the second time Barbara Walters has been caught triangulating between her employee and others.
First it was her disingenuous statements about Star Jones's future on the show.
Now, it appears likely that she was saying nasty things about Rosie to Trump -- probably in an effort to calm him down. When Rosie confronted her about it and Baba was evasive, Rosie's tirade hit the Post's Page Six, in turn prompting Trump's letter in which he sarcastically feigned sympathy for Rosie for having such a disloyal and duplicitous boss.
So I don't know what the earlier poster was talking about -- Barbara Walters has no integrity at all.
Posted by: Meridian | January 11, 2007 2:31 PM
Does anybody really take this stuff seriously? This is nothing more than the same sort of faux feuding that is standard fare in pro wrestling! It would not surprise me in the least that their publicists are egging them on! In a world where Paris Hilton and Britney Spears are idols, this silly feud is par for the course.
Posted by: John | January 11, 2007 2:35 PM
Nah - what's REALLY interesting is the number of comments this stupid thing has gotten! Usually the high numbers are for lists or music/movie-related themes. This isn't up in the hundreds, but it's definately on the charts in terms of reader-responses.
Posted by: Bogota | January 11, 2007 2:43 PM
Thanks for the comments "miss belle" about seeing this instead of the deaths in Iraq. So true. Also, this takes up screen time that might be wasted on other stories, like "more people were murdered in New Orleans since January 1st than troops killed in Iraq". Or, "43,000 people died on the roads last year so let's ban cars".
You want to post political comments, go to che's site, or Fishers site, but just go.

Stick them both on an island and make them work together to survive... or start referring to them as a celebrity couple with names such as Donlie, Rosal, or Trumple.
Posted by: Chris | January 11, 2007 2:48 PM
Rosie made a comment on the View about Trump. Trump didn't like it and for the next two weeks talked, talked and talked somemore. Rosie didn't say a word (other than the next day), few comments on her blog and that was it. Trump kept talking and brought Walters in the fray. He put words in her mouth. TO SAY THIS WAS TWO-SIDED FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS IS WRONG. Walters made a comment last week and again this week when Rosie came back from vacation.
This was a Trump meltdown pure and simple. He looked like the total a$$ he is.

Madonna's sudden appearance in this fight just proves that this is more about being in the spotlight than anything.
Expect to hear more "celebrities" to chime in on this. By the end of the month, we'll probably hear from Star Jones, Kathy Lee Gifford, Rev. Al Sharpton and Screech.

The consensus at my place of work is that Trump really hates women, especially plump women. I doubt that very many women over size 10 (and that is most of us) will be fans of his or his shows.
Besides, Rosie is not an unattractive female. She has lovely hair, dresses neatly and appropriately and is not at all repulsive, in spite of being overweight.
Rosie could lose weight and become more conventionally beautiful, but Donald's hair is hopeless and I fear will never be salvaged. Besides, his mean spirit screws up his face and makes him look like an egg sucking ferret.
Posted by: ginger | January 11, 2007 6:10 PM
I'm kind of indifferent--although Rosie's original rant was funny when she flipped her hair over--but Trump's nonstop fatfatfat was disgusting and borderline mysogynistic. He made it a much bigger story than it would've been by reacting so pissily--if he'd just laughed, he would've looked a lot more secure. Guess he proved her point.
Posted by: NYC | January 11, 2007 6:32 PM
I can't stand Trump and who in the hell told him that his comb over was remotely attractive? You would think that all that money could buy a hair tranplant, for cripes sake. As for RoDO, she grates on me and frankly her take on the situation with Trump was not well thought out. Ms. America has a contract with Trump and Trump coulda dumped her and it would have been bigger news. In fact, I think the world has pretty much forgotten Tara Conner. Trump was within his right to demand that Conner perform up to her contract. What pisses me off about is he had do it so publicly. Like he couldn't have hauled her into his office and provided that "progressive" discipline privately? I think the jerk announced that he was going to "possibly fire" her then made the big deal out of giving her a chance. It was humiliating for Ms. Conner. It's nice that he gave her a second chance so she isn't the Bad Ms America for the rest of her life, but his actions make me wonder how on earth he can claim to be any kind of professional manager such that he can have any credibility on his Apprentice show. It's poor management to broadcast your employee's problems to the rest of the office (world) and he could have kept a lid on it, shown some class and style, and made a simple statement to the press that Ms. Conner has assured him that she will conform her behavior to her contractual obligations. But NNNOOOOO, he had to make an embarrassing circus out of it. Goes to show you that there isn't enough money to morph this class-challenged pig into anything but a rich, souless business thug with too much hubris and a bad comb over.
