Celebritology 101: Stars We Love to Hate

That annoying Diane Keaton mugs at the premiere of her new movie, 'Because I Said So.' (Getty Images)
So many stars and not enough room in our hearts to love them all.
This explains why my sainted, nurturing mother can hate Matt Damon or why a friend who shall remain nameless contorts her face into a hideous mask when she catches even a brief glimpse of Jim Carrey or, to get to the point, why it is that I utterly and completely detest Diane Keaton.
I apologize to the Keaton lovers out there. I'm willing to concede that Keaton is a perfectly fine actor and deserves some kind of credit for her part in movies like "Annie Hall," "The Godfather(s)" and "Reds." Grudging credit granted. Still, there is just something about the fashion-challenged, whiny, goggle-eyed woman that I find maddening. And no, beyond these superficial criticisms, I just can't seem to put my finger on what it is about Keaton that bothers me.
Often, there is no logic involved with why we hate a particular star. We have a gut reaction, as if warding off a potential allergen. Our mood blackens and we are only able to find relief in the power of insult. A former co-worker of mine unleashes a string of venomous barbs every time he sees a certain "Today Show" co-anchor. Each successive comment about her hair ("Like a rat's nest") or her demeanor ("Why does she tilt her head like that?") acting as an analgesic, soothing his deeply offended sensibilities.
Often we gravitate to those we hate. How many times have you lingered, mid-channel surfing, to take in a scene or two from one of your least favorite actors or sat disgusted by some pop tart singer who has defied all that is right and good in the world to climb the pop charts with a song like -- oh, let's say "Fergilicious?"
Life is yin and yang, and even our fascination with celebrities attests to the duality of our attraction. Often, our dislike for a particular star is a personal thing -- invariably, we hate someone universally admired by pretty much everyone else. Still, there are some shared targets on which we fixate en masse. We don't like Paris Hilton. We like hating Paris Hilton. With every tawdry update about the celebutante's exploits, we are reveling in our shared contempt.
Which brings me back to Diane Keaton. Every time I see an ad for her new chick flick "Because I Said So," (trailer) I am spellbound -- I can no sooner turn away than leave a scab unpicked. The sight of Keaton -- in a series of awful outfits -- playing the overbearing mother hen to a flock of 20-something daughters, discovering online sex and ultimately finding love is almost too much to bear. I can't wait for the DVD.
Who do you love to hate? Get it out of your system in the comments section.

Sara Jessica Parker... No good reason; she's just annoying!
Posted by: love the topic | February 1, 2007 10:53 AM
Ann Heche! Hate her! I even find myself watching "Men In Trees." I think I have perfectly good reasons, though: the whole dating Ellen Degeneres thing (yeah, that wasn't just to make a name for herself! Ha!), the wierdness when she "had a second personality who was an alien" or whatever (like that wasn't just supposed to be a distraction from the whole breaking up with Ellen thing), and now leaving her husband because she's in love with her co-star from M.I.T.! Sheesh! Paris Hilton's love life is easier to follow than this mess!!
Not that it's really any of my business, but I can't help how I feel!

Gwen Stefani. I don't know why, but I hate Gwen Stefani.
Posted by: laura | February 1, 2007 10:58 AM
I like Keaton only because she breaks that age barrier that women actors have. I mean how can Sly keep getting movies, but older women can't. Men can be leads into decrepit old age, but women don't get squat.
That said, Tucker Carlson annoys me to no end. And I'm probably going to get beaten verbally, but Oprah also annoys me a lot. OH and Rachel Ray.
Posted by: not bluto | February 1, 2007 11:01 AM
add me to the Can't Stand Jim Carrey list.
Posted by: m.a. | February 1, 2007 11:01 AM
I'm with the first poster...I can't stand Tom Brady's mouth. Though I know why I hate him...he used to be the underdog that I liked when the Pats played the Rams, the guy who barely beat out Bledsoe for the starting spot. Now, all he does is run his mouth and act like the arrogant kid he turned out to be. So yeah, he gets double-bad points since I once rooted for him.
Oh, and put Ben Affleck in there...I know 5-year olds in my community theatre that can act more convincingly than he can, and any one of the teen boys in that group would have been a more convincing Daredevil...

Greys Anatomy is one of my fav shows but Ellen Pompeo annoys me to no end!
Posted by: sunpop | February 1, 2007 11:04 AM
I simply cannot stand the sight or sound of Jack Black!!! Why is he a celebrity? Why is he an actor? He cant act, he is certainly not funny, and his voice and nasally laugh drives me nuts! Remember the preview for the movie "The Holiday" where his character falls in love with Kate Winslet's character, and there was that "boob graze" line? That scene made me wanna throw up. So, yeah, I cant stand non-actor, non-humorous, rock-star wannabe Jack Black. Phew! I feel better...

I think Diane Keaton has some weird phobia where she only wears white outfits (with white gloves, natch). Anyway, I hate her too, Liz. Let's drive to her house and throw garbage on her front lawn.

Star Jones Reynolds
Donald Trump
Rosie O'Donnell
Ryan Seacrest
Paula Abdul

I'm with Laura, Gwen Stefani is my public enemy number one. I think it's because I remember the Tragic Kingdom days too fondly. I'm probably over romanticizing. Then, she seemed punky, confident, healthy, see-if-I-care. Now, she seems strung out, woefully trendy and obsessed with her image in a less self aware than she was way back when. More spikes, less glitter, Gwen. Remember when?

Do NFL coaches count?
Bill Cowher. I just can't stand that jaw.
Posted by: Error Flynn | February 1, 2007 11:27 AM
Julia Roberts. I don't know why, but she just gets on my nerves. Maybe it's because she seems to exude this "My life is so much better than yours" attitude. And the fact that her mouth seems to take up about 80% of her face.
Posted by: stephfl | February 1, 2007 11:27 AM
Angelina Jolie annoys the crap out of me. I hate it when my mother watches her on Oprah and tells me what a wonderful woman Angelina is for taking in all of those children, doing good works, blah blah blah. You know what? Angelina is, and always well be, a homewrecker in my mind. No matter how many babies she adopts, she will still be the freaky, skanky ho who thought it was a good idea to wear her husband's blood around her neck, who had sex with Billy Bob on the way to the MTV VMAs, and who practically made out WITH HER OWN BROTHER when she won an Oscar. Actually, by association, I also now find Brad Pitt to be a pain in the patootie.

Rachel Ray, Rachel Ray, and Rachel Ray. UGH.
Posted by: R.B. | February 1, 2007 11:31 AM
My list includes:
Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes
Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt
Britney Spears
Oprah
Ray Romano (Not everybody loved Raymond!) -- his voice makes me cringe!

sara jessica parker - resembles mr. ed
david caruso- stodgy and stupid

Keira Knightley or however you spell her d__n name. Ugh!
Posted by: Eric | February 1, 2007 11:37 AM
I despise Tom Cruise. I think he treated Nicole Kidman horribly and I so love it that she is a 100 times better actor than he. I won't pay to see another of his movies. Brad Pitt has also been added to my list along with Burt Reynolds. And don't even get me started on Donald Trump...you go Rosie!!!
Posted by: BeckyT | February 1, 2007 11:37 AM
I tried to watch Grey's Anatomy once but the whole show is annoying. And that Ellen Pompeo, what's with her mouth? I can't even stand to look at her silly looking pout.
Posted by: dc fem | February 1, 2007 11:37 AM
Cameron Diaz. Fish mouth, fake smile.
Brad Pitt. Ladies, what the &*(# do you see in him?
Posted by: J | February 1, 2007 11:39 AM
Add me to the list for Rachel Ray. I was in a bookstore that was displaying her cookbook. I took the book and hid it under a shelf. I didn't want her face to ruin my Sunday afternoon.
Posted by: Lisa | February 1, 2007 11:40 AM
TIM ALLEN
Sorry to use all caps, but that's how much I despise him. He ain't funny, and I've heard numerous times that was a complete jerk before he became a star -- I can believe it.
Posted by: jimbo | February 1, 2007 11:41 AM
They all pretty much annoy me. But really only the publicity seeking ones.
Posted by: Stick | February 1, 2007 11:42 AM
Dakota Fanning scares the crap out of me. And I hate hate hate Sienna Miller. And Jennifer Love Hewitt.

what still and r.b. said, and add hasselhoff and jennifer love hewitt.
she's just creepy.

No one said Nicholas Cage yet!
How does he keep getting work? There is no worse actor than Cage. At least Keanu Reeves can be nice to look at. Cage has absolutely no redeeming value, and for what he did to the world with "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" he should be serving a life sentence in a Chinese prison. Plus, he has a skeevy personal life, and his voice could wilt flowers.
I don't have the facination factor. If I flip across something that has Cage in it, I immediately flip away. I haven't seen a Cage movie in a theater since Face/off. And that was my date's choice, not mine.
Posted by: WDC | February 1, 2007 11:43 AM
I was just thinking last night about how I can't stand Diane Keaton! So I'm not the only one.
Drew Barrymore's acting annoys me so much, but I do think she's beautiful.
Posted by: ga peach | February 1, 2007 11:43 AM
can we include alleged newspeople? then i'd add Nancy Grace. it just p**es me off to look at her.
Posted by: b | February 1, 2007 11:45 AM
Kurt Russell. I can barely look at him. Maybe it is his long feathery hair. Maybe the memory of "Overboard."
Posted by: Laura | February 1, 2007 11:45 AM
"And the fact that her mouth seems to take up about 80% of her face."
I have no clue why I'm still laughing about that.
Posted by: not bluto | February 1, 2007 11:45 AM
I absolutely cannot stand Jennifer Love Hewitt. Just the sight of her makes my skin crawl! She's like visual nails on a chalkboard to me.
And my husband detests Kevin Bacon and will only watch movies that he is in if his character dies a violent death or is in some way tortured.
Posted by: gigi | February 1, 2007 11:46 AM
Mel Gibson and Tom Cruise-- can't stand the sight of either one of those freaks, and I refuse to see any film associated with them.
Posted by: VG | February 1, 2007 11:47 AM
Angelina Jolie,
Can't this woman find a man who is NOT married or otherwise involved in a serious relationship? First Laura Dern, then Jennifer Aniston. And, puhleeze don't get me started on her Vogue comment about her willingness to meet with Jennifer Aniston. Obnoxious, insulting, and strangely naive all at the same time. YUK, ICK, and YUK again.
Posted by: carole | February 1, 2007 11:48 AM
Does anyone remember Melanie Griffith?? After the movie "Working Girl," she put the woman's movement back at least 50 years. Total ditz, terrible actress, and that breathless little girl voice sends me over the edge. I don't get it.
Posted by: TF | February 1, 2007 11:49 AM
Yes! I can't stand Jennifer Love Hewitt! I hated her on Party of Five, I hated her in Can't Hardly Wait, I hated how her signature "thing" was to pull her sleeves over her hands. I did that first! And not because it was stylish, I just have really short arms, all my sleeves inadvertantly end up covering my palms! Acchhh! And I hate how she goes by Love, instead of Jen or Jennifer. I imagine she thinks it makes her cuter or more cloyingly adorable or some bulls---. Yechhh, she's the worst.
And her show? Terrible, and a total rip-off of Medium.
Oh, and I hate Bill O'Reilly.
Posted by: Charlietown | February 1, 2007 11:50 AM
There is just something about Russell Crowe's face that makes me want to punch it.
Posted by: flying fists of rage | February 1, 2007 11:50 AM
I hate David Caruso, but so does everyone else. Why does he still have a job? I can't watch CSI Miami anymore because of him. Well, that and the ridiculous plotlines.
I also hate Julia Roberts, speaking of holier-than-thou homewreckers. And that woman that was Caroline in the City. Cannot stand her. Why is she always smirking?
Posted by: Northerner | February 1, 2007 11:51 AM
TOBEY MAGUIRE!!! I can not stand him. Ugh. Also Kirsten Dunst. Both just bother me to no end. I've even tried liking them bc everyone else does but I just can't. Guess how much I love Spiderman? Not at all...
Posted by: UGH | February 1, 2007 11:51 AM
Agree with so many (except I like Tom Brady) and let me add...
Kelly Ripa
Lindsay Lohan
Claire Danes
Justin Timberlake
Kobe Bryant
Tim Russert
The whole durn Cheney Family
Barbara Bush I
Rudy Giuliani & Judith Nathan
Chris Evert & Greg Norman (recent inductees)
Now I need a shower just thinking about these people...
Posted by: Kathleen | February 1, 2007 11:54 AM
Tom Cruise goes without saying, but no one mentioned Jennifer Lopez. She is the epitome of MEDIOCRE. Her singing, her dancing and especially her acting.
Posted by: No to JLo | February 1, 2007 11:58 AM
I can't stand Tom Arnold!
I think he is a talentless boob who is only known because of marrying Roseanne. And yet he keeps showing up and being given opportunities.
Another major annoyance: Carrot Top
Posted by: CJB | February 1, 2007 11:59 AM
the vitriol against A. Jolie really baffles me, and it isn't the kind of hate Liz is talking about. What we are discussing here is the irrational, I have no idea why I despise Julia Roberts, but I do, feeling. I also hate Gwyneth Paltrow. Both of them. Grr. NO reason at all, and I have even liked movies they were in (despite myself), but they get my hackles up. My sister is that way with Kate Winslet and she hates that she is that way--she just cannot help it! A long screed about Angie's homewrecking doesn't count here, folks. You are just projecting, not being irrationally hateful.

I really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really
can't stand...
Oprah. Don't shoot me. But I wish she, her no-talent friend Gayle, Tyra and Rosie could all be dropped off somewhere so we never have to hear from them again.
Posted by: Melinda | February 1, 2007 12:00 PM
My list includes but is definitely not limited to:
Matt Damon/Ben Affleck - they're like the Smuggy von Smuginhausen twins
Gwyneth Paltrow - in some interview recently she used the word insouisance. It drove me into a bitter fit of hate for inexplicable reasons
Brad Pitt - because I never found him attractive and this led to many confrontations where friends would corner me with questions like "how can any sane person possibly not find this god-like image of pure beauty attractive?"
Winona Ryder - mmm...so much hate
Penelope Cruz - she can't act and her voice drives me nuts. Gimme Salma Hayek over her anyday. mmm.
Wow. I'll stop now, I could go on for ages.
Posted by: janie | February 1, 2007 12:01 PM
Julia Roberts and Katie Couric and pretty much anyone that the media dubs as America's Sweetheart and then proceeds to shove down our collective throats (yuck!)
Posted by: Carol B | February 1, 2007 12:01 PM
Sarah Jessica Parker - she has the face of a horse. Seriosly, look at the facial structure of her nose and mouth. It's very equine.
Posted by: | February 1, 2007 12:03 PM
angelina jolie.
why does she call her own child a "blob" and openly admit she likes one child more than the other? ....
paris hilton, nicole ritchie, jennifer aniston, cameron diaz, natalie portman.
Posted by: dc | February 1, 2007 12:04 PM
Gwyneth Paltrow -- what an annoying, self important person who hasn't made a good movie since Shakespeare in Love. Oh, and nice job naming your kids. I'm sure they will be thrilled as they get older to go by Apple and Moses.
Posted by: annonymous | February 1, 2007 12:05 PM
Meg Ryan. Ugh.
Posted by: anon | February 1, 2007 12:05 PM
Oh please, this is going to be so cathartic:
Jessica Simpson - no explination necessary
Rachel Ray
Rachel Ray again, cause really, she's awful
Natalie Morales on the Today Show - why? She thinks shes some kind of fashionista, its sad...
Beyonce
Toby McGuire, how is someone so dog-faced considered good on film, or desired by women? Ewwww...
Justin Timberlake, shave your patchy facial hair
Don't even get me started on some of the others mentioned here... Jennifer "Love" Whatever her name is? That's terrible. She's terrible.
Are you going to follow-up on people we love unconditionally for balance?
Posted by: Genna | February 1, 2007 12:06 PM
I hate John Cusack. I just hate him.
I hate Jennifer Aniston too.
Posted by: JB | February 1, 2007 12:06 PM
Nick Nolte! Ick, ick, ick. I hated him even pre-mug shot. (And would only admit to my therapist that he wasn't completely terrible in Hotel Rwanda.)
Posted by: Phoebe | February 1, 2007 12:07 PM
Jeremy Piven is starting to get on my nerves. I really like Entourage and don't want to stop watching the show, he's becoming a total a-hole.
Posted by: Lisa | February 1, 2007 12:12 PM
Liz, I think this is the best commentary you've ever done - I am going to be in hysterics for the rest of the day! Fellow posters, thanks! The Jennifer Love Hewitt haters are most definitely my favorite - I have been there for years and never understood why :)
janet margrave - your list is fantastic :)
Posted by: W | February 1, 2007 12:15 PM
as a mom, I will agree with Angie (and read the WHOLE quote before you attack). The first few months your baby has little personality. Then all of a sudden she blooms into a little person. That is what Angie said. Also, as a parent of one disabled child and one nondisabled, I understand her other statement. As hard as it is for people to admit, parents can be more protective, loving, drawn to their more vulnerable children. That is all she was saying. it just seems people go faaar out of their way to criticize someone who gives away 75% of her income to charity and about whom those who have reason to know (human rights workers, UN officials) praise and laud for her true caring and efforts. Finally, even JEN's FRIENDS have said on numerous occasions that their marriage was over two years after they married. Angie didn't cause a thing; at most, she catalyzed it.
Posted by: VAMom | February 1, 2007 12:16 PM
I hate Madonna. I hate her fake English accent. I also hate Angelina Jolie for reasons that other people have already stated.
Posted by: Irish girl | February 1, 2007 12:16 PM
I was trying to think of just one, but could not. So I will just say all of them.
Talentless,unfocused all.
Posted by: dadams | February 1, 2007 12:17 PM
i find diane keaton ok but my husband will insist on fast forwarding through all the commercials for new movie...he can't explain why he despises her so much...and how come we haven't seen JLO on this list...ugh...she's embarrassing to watch...
Posted by: arl | February 1, 2007 12:17 PM
Jessica Simpson. No talent. No reason to be a celebrity. A scourge upon John Mayer.
Cher. Grating voice, all plastic.
Julia Roberts. SO overrated.
Jennifer Lopez. Skanky and self-important.
Burt Reynolds. Retire already.
Smarmy Tucker Carlson.
Richard Gere -- could someone please explain the fascination with him?
Posted by: mimi | February 1, 2007 12:17 PM
Finally, even JEN's FRIENDS have said on numerous occasions that their marriage was over two years after they married. Angie didn't cause a thing; at most, she catalyzed it.
What were you over at their house for dinner? How the hell do you know and why can't you just stick to the question of who you don't like?

despise despise J. Aniston and Tom Cruise. And Julia Roberts. No articulable reason for any. Just irrational barf reaction.

Kevin Bacon. Can not stand him. Don't know why...
Posted by: Neerja | February 1, 2007 12:18 PM
Janie said, "Matt Damon/Ben Affleck - they're like the Smuggy von Smuginhausen twins"
WAHAHAHAHA!! I love it!
I'll add Gary Busey to this list. Dude just creeps me out.
Posted by: ladybugolo | February 1, 2007 12:19 PM
Justin Timberlake and Tom Cruise. The first has NO sex appeal, and the second is a conceited, sanctimonious creep.
Posted by: | February 1, 2007 12:20 PM
Eva Longoria - she is only out for publicity -- if you pay attention you'll see how she wiggles her way into every big story/trend. I am dreading her wedding which she publically announced the day, time and place...wow she is starved for attention. Ugh she kills me....
Posted by: pkc | February 1, 2007 12:21 PM
funny, I HATE Ben Affleck but love Matt Damon. I think Ben is a scourge upon Matt (to steal from the above poster about Jessica and John Mayer)
Posted by: DCHater | February 1, 2007 12:21 PM
My two personal least-faves:
1. Renee Zellweger - I wonder if she thinks making that squinty-eyed, I-just-sucked-on-a-lemon face makes her look like a Serious Actress
2. Helen Hunt - whiny, whiny. Twister...Pay It Forward...need I say more?
Posted by: Michelle | February 1, 2007 12:36 PM
Can't stand Oprah, and also Toni Morrison. Hate Tom Cruise. Maybe because he looks like an old, horrible boyfriend.
I absolutely can't stand to look at any picture of John Lennon or Yoko Ono. They both make me itch.
Also, remember Joey Heatherton?
Posted by: Barb | February 1, 2007 12:36 PM
I also despise Jennifer Love Hewitt. I think it has something to do with ex-boyfriends and guy friends who can't get enough of her. She's so saccharine sweet and cutesy, it just makes me want to barf. And frankly, I think her chin is too long and pointy.
Posted by: Emmie | February 1, 2007 12:41 PM
I have always intensely disliked Gwyneth Paltrow. She strikes me as snotty and self-important and whiny and I hate that her hair is so long. I have also long found Tom Cruise and Mel Gibson exceedingly creepy, eve before their recent behavior. I refuse to see any new Tom Cruise movies and will never ever watch Braveheart.
Posted by: go,chica,go | February 1, 2007 12:41 PM
It seems that others have beaten me to the punch. Some of the people I can't stand are already on the list. Those that I didn't see are:
Kathy Lee Gifford, I can't stand that woman and I don't have a reason for it. I use the standard sweat shops but really I hated her way before that came out.
R Kelly, why is he still making songs, why?
Add Keith Sweat to that as well.
Matt Le Blanc, David Swimmer, Jennifer Aniston. Heck, the entire cast of Friends.
Wesley Snipes, for every single movie or appearance he's ever made.
Posted by: petal | February 1, 2007 12:41 PM
I can't stand any of the Simpsons, especially Svengali Joe. No talent at all!
Speaking of no talent: Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritchie, Hilary Duff and her sister, Sienna Miller, Pamela Anderson.
I also have to agree with pp about Jeremy Piven. I love him on Entourage, but the acclaim seems to be going to his head.
Posted by: del2001 | February 1, 2007 12:41 PM
I also despise Jennifer Love Hewitt. I think it has something to do with ex-boyfriends and guy friends who can't get enough of her. She's so saccharine sweet and cutesy, it just makes me want to barf. And frankly, I think her chin is too long and pointy.
Posted by: Emmie | February 1, 2007 12:41 PM
regarding Eva Longoria: I can't look at her without remembering that someone ... was Lisa DeMoraes? ... described her as rodent-faced.
Posted by: m.a. | February 1, 2007 12:42 PM
Bill Paxton. The only good role he ever had was when he played Chet in Weird Science, and then later was transformed into a heaping pile of flatulent feces.
Kevin Costner aggravates me to no end. He is flat and monotone with no real emotion and an overall terrible actor, but what really irks me is I always get the impression he thinks he is gods gift to thespianism. His overall attitude, not his poor acting skills, are a real turnoff.
Posted by: Charlietown | February 1, 2007 12:42 PM
I agree w/ Melinda and her hate for Oprah and her bloated, self-important entourage. I like to say her name wrong and call her "Orpah" instead...hee hee...sounds like a whale's name at Sea World!
Angelina Jolie-because I, unlike so many, have not forgotton that she is a complete nut job.
Oh, and Ashley Judd...OMG I could jump off a cliff when I see her or her huge dumbo ears on screen!
Ok, one more...Jennifer Garner...boy, what a lucky girl she is...she looked like a drag queen in most of those Alias getups they put her in. YUCK!!
Posted by: Helcat | February 1, 2007 12:42 PM
can not stand for no real reason:
Claire Danes
Ben Affleck (eeek!)
Puffy Diddy Seany Combsy
Posted by: yuc-ko | February 1, 2007 12:42 PM
long list, but way at the tippy top is RENEE ZELWEGGER. INsufferable!!
p.s. from a grammar nitpicker: It's 'whom do you hate', not 'who do you hate'
Posted by: | February 1, 2007 12:42 PM
My husband and I both despise John Lithgow. Those Campbell's select soup commercials are immediately muted. He's sooooo creepy! Eeewww!
Posted by: Emmy | February 1, 2007 12:44 PM
It would be a whole lot easier to name the ones I like rather than those I dislike but nonetheless here is my list, for whatever it's worth:
Rachel Ray - anyone remember Gilda Radner's Rosann RosanaDana (sp)
James Woods - republican sack of sh!t
Rush Limbaugh - see above
Sean Hannity - see above again
Bill O really - you know the drill
ahh heck...all republicans, especially those on a first-name-basis w/Rush; like my stepdad: "did you listen to Rush today..."
all c&w singers (except Buck Owens, David Allen Coe and Hank Jr.)
Most of all I hate Bush and Cheney! I hope I'm alive when they die so I can dance a jig on all the news articles and then p!ss all over their eulogies!!! And if there is any justice in this world, their deaths should be long, painful and ugly and may they rot in Hell for time and eternity in unbearable agony!!!

AJ Shamgod or Ramrod or whatever-
Are you referring to all of the stars we're talking about? Because if so, then kudos to you...if you're refering to us, then stop typing and readjust your holier-than-thou hat and keep walking...

Kevin Costner.
Have no idea why, but I have to work myself up to see a movie he's in. I just can't watch him act. I even like Field of Dreams, but it's hard. My friends even have a running joke about me seeing movies with him in it.
Posted by: jpangel | February 1, 2007 12:50 PM
Samuel Jackson gives me the creeps. I also can't watch anything with Brittney Murphy in it (post Clueless). Oh, and Kate Bosworth is also really creepy. Add Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritchie and Lindsay Lohan to that list as well. I'm so sick of hearing about them.
Posted by: Bored at Work | February 1, 2007 12:51 PM
Does anyone else dislike Reese Witherspoon? I know we're supposed to feel sorry for her right now with her crumbling marriage and all, but she annoys the crap out of me.
Posted by: Emmie | February 1, 2007 12:52 PM
I only "dislike" the celebrities that make it with no talent whatsoever like"
1. Jennifer Lopez
2. Britney "trainwreck" Spears
3. Madonna - don't get how people like this overrated she-male monster
4. Paris "herpes case" Hilton - I'm not even gonna go there...I might catch something
5. Lindsay Lohan - a waste of space
6. Tom Brady - now that he's a superbowl winner he only dates models...so cliche and I don't think he's cute anymore, he looks like Frankenstein to me
Btw this list is in no particular order. I don't "hate" any

FYI..."Women actors" are called "actresses."

Here is my list:
Rachel Ray, Gwen Stefani, Jack Black, Julia, pitt, Beyonce, Penelope Cruz, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kelly Ripa, Tyra, Gayle- Oprah's friend. But, I love me some Tom Cruise.
Posted by: my hate list | February 1, 2007 12:54 PM
Katie Holmes. Even before the whole Tom Cruise thing, I couldn't stand listening to or watching her simpering.
Also, Nicolas Cage. What is the appeal there? His voice is annoying, he's not particularly good-looking, and that blank stare he does freaks me out...
Posted by: Maria | February 1, 2007 12:58 PM
Orpah (lol)
she too is on my list.
Posted by: hateful | February 1, 2007 1:00 PM
I am so laughing. I'm going to hell because I hate ALL of these people. (Except Brendan Fraser. He's not on my list.)
I couldn't figure out why I didn't like Matt Damon until "Janie" pointed out the smugness.
To "TF", Melanie Griffith WAS bad in Working Girl, but she also used her Betty Boop persona in when she was playing an American spy in Nazi Germany in Shining Through. "Do you want to taste my strudel?" Aaarrgh!
"WDC" is right about Nick Cage. I want to soak him in Lysol.
Now, can we add Sigourney Weaver (w/ her stupid name and nostrils) and John Travolta (he's starting to remind me of William Shatner) to the list? And how about the annoying Chris Kuttan (or however you spell his name)--the former SNLer?
Posted by: sen | February 1, 2007 1:00 PM
arghhh! Renee "someone inflated my face with a bicycle pump" Zellwenger. I cannot stand her!
Posted by: Alexandria | February 1, 2007 1:01 PM
Nicolas Cage. I cannot stand the sight of him. He freaked me out in "Moonstruck," and he's just gotten weirder and uglier since.
Posted by: smkeditor | February 1, 2007 1:01 PM
Sean Penn.
Posted by: 23112 | February 1, 2007 1:01 PM
This column was so well written, bravo!
I hate...Hillary Swank. I'm like, whatever, you played a transvestite and a boxer and you've got grit, I'll give you that, and you can work a grin and a Southern accent. Beyond that, shut your big-toothed face.
Its illogical, I know that, but she just plumb irks me.

VAMom
Get over yourself, this is a hate list! People can dislike people for whatever reason they want to. You are on the wrong forum! Beside... I can't stand Angelina Jolie! I have hated her from her Billy Joel Thorton days; don't think she is attractive or talented AT ALL! And everything I have ever heard about her makes me think her dad is right! She needs a 24/7 therapist!!! Besides, her other children were BABY's when she got then... not much different than what her own is now! These children NEVER!!! experience hardship, they were adopted before they were 6 months old!

I want to sneak up behind Diane Keaton and shave off part of her hair so that she has to change her 'do for the first time in 30 years.
Posted by: not the liz | February 1, 2007 1:04 PM
Actually, women actors are. . . actors.
If we've gotten past calling a woman pilot an aviatrix, can we also drop all the other stupid, belittling, gender-specific nouns like "actress"?
(Guess "dominatrix" is sticking around, tho.)
Posted by: sen | February 1, 2007 1:04 PM
Madonna and Sean Penn!!!! Both need to fall off the side of the world!
I HATE any actor/actress that talk politics! I don't care what they believe! I don't need them to tell me what I am supposed to think! Why should I listen to someone who's career involves other people telling them what to say... which actually isn't much different from politicians (from both sides of the isle)!
Any actor/actress that names are combined to make a "CUTE" nickname for themselves!
Posted by: M | February 1, 2007 1:06 PM
I really don't know if I can call him a "star" but Ryan Seacrest is at the top of my list. I cringe whenever I hear him attempting to be funny or ironic- what a tool. Diane Keaton makes my list too but she's somewhere in the bottom 100. Here's the rest of my top ten:
Jessica Simpson
Paris Hilton
Oprah Winfrey
Star Jones Reynolds
Jennifer Lopez
Billy Bush
Cynthia Nixon
Rosie O'Donnell
Rachel Ray

I love that you just typed Billy Joel Thornton...HA!!! Freudian slip? Let's just add Billy Joel to the list too...I wish he'd find an Italian Restaurant on a different planet and take root there! HA! This is so fun!

query: who LIKES Rachael Ray? How does this woman make millions of dollars? She makes the skin crawl of everyone I know (and lots I don't judging by this list). Plus, she cannot cook. She just throws crap together and calls herself a chef. I don't get it.
And Jennifer Aniston: how does she keep getting millions to be in crap movies?

Um, ok, my husband has a crush on Rachel Ray...he says she's "cute." I don't hate her that much, and for someone who doesn't like to cook if it involves more than 5 ingredients, I find her meals pretty good. Ok, you can throw daggers at me now!

Will Ferrell - his schtick is getting really old really fast
Owen Wilson - I just don't get it
Nancy Pelosi - fake smile
Rush Limbaugh - I'm a republican and I think he is an idiot! gives us center republicans a bad rap
Payton Manning - I don't know why, he has always grated on my nerves from day one
Julia Roberts - overrated
Alec Baldwin - creeps me out
Tina Fey - not funny
George Clooney - too self important, and his oscar speech last year did not help his cause either
Fred Durst - nuff said

How has no one mentioned Howie Mandel yet.
Posted by: ew | February 1, 2007 1:19 PM
I can't stand Campbell Brown. I'm sure she's a great newswoman, but I wouldn't know because I can't hear anything when she talks--I'm just staring at her squinty eyes and irritatingly narrow nose. How does she breathe out of that thing?? Does she have gills on the side of her neck, hidden by her anchorwoman helmet hair?
I also want to add that I hate Gwyneth Paltrow. Every time I see her die in a movie (or when it's implied), I cheer a little. Yeah, there's a bit of guilt when I do that, but not much.
Posted by: Gala | February 1, 2007 1:20 PM
Madonna. When I look at her, I can practically smell unwashed underwear. Skankarama!
BritneyLindsayNicoleParis and all those other interchangeable tabloid blondes. So sick of them.
Tom Cruise: are those werdo cooties contagious?
Then Kevin Coster with his dead shark stare.
Let's not even get into Bush, Cheney and crew. They will all have warm chairs waiting for them in Hell's brand new Hitler Memorial Stadium.
Posted by: | February 1, 2007 1:20 PM
Bill AllRiledUp, for sure, and his soul-brotha Rush Limbaugh. I hold them personally responsible for the disappearance of anything remotely resembling "civilized debate" from our public square. But wait, that's rational despising, and that's not what this is about.
So...Angelina Jolie 'cause she's just so annoyingly PERFECT and REGAL and UBIQUITOUS.
Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise. Ever since that horrendous last film by Stanley Kubrick ("Eyes Wide Shut"), I never want to hear either of them *breathe* or say naughty words again.
Meryl Streep. I know it's heretical, but she is so Respected and Serious and I just don't feel like watching her movies.
This is so fun I don't want to stop. Would also like to see a "celebrities we love to love" opportunity too.
Posted by: Jill | February 1, 2007 1:20 PM
Emmie I thought I was the only one who hates Reese Witherspoon, I have never been able to sit all the way through one of her movies. My husband laughs at me everytime one of her commericals comes on.
Liz! You hit this one out of the ballpark!

Can we even count Ryan Seacrest as a "celebrity"?
As for me, Angelina Jolie. (Although if we are counting Seacrest...)
Posted by: scr | February 1, 2007 1:21 PM
Also, has Ashlee Simpson been mentioned? It's weird, Jessica seems pretty okay, but Ashlee's celebrity presence is like nails on my mental chalkboard.

I wonder if many women hate Angelina Jolie because she seems like the kind of woman whom you would *not* want as a friend. It's difficult to imagine her laughing with a group of girlfriends. She gives off some aura of being far too important and serious for such stuff.
Posted by: Jill | February 1, 2007 1:27 PM
Where do I start in a celebrity culture:
My Top 15
Angelina Jolie- looks like a female praying mantis, and preaches ad infinitum about all the worlds wrongs and then adopts. I mean, seriously, think she is taking care of all those kids. Save a child, save the world. Focus on being a Mom and stop acting altogether. But, I liked her acting in The Good Shepherd. Please, just act!
Lindsay Lohan- a poster child for not letting your kids act. The only thing I can't stand more than hearing what she is doing is the shows that focus on focusing on her. I just have to turn them off I get so angry.
Jennifer Lopez- dance, sing, act- pick one and try to do it well. Tired of hearing from you. I'm sure she wants to direct at some point- maybe it'll be a movie starring Lindsay Lohan so it'll automatically be bad.
Madonna- Went from Like A Virgin to Like I care. And what's with the "Me too" adoption and the British accent?
Julia Roberts- I agree- too much lip, too many teeth and always seems so conflicted and just so pleased with herself, but then sad about it at the same time.
Condoleeza Rice- That woman is scary. Am I the only one who thinks she just seem incredibly cold. Can anyone picture her hugging anyone or playing with a pet or something?
Paris Hilton, Britney and her entourage- Britney does seem to be in limbo- as in how low can she go?
Oprah- The hyperbole I have heard- "this is the most important thing you can ever do...." Puhleez. And the magazine...I try to go through the grocery aisle with blinders on.
Jessica Simpson- Just seems like there isn't much there there- I have heard she is very bright but doesn't act that way, which makes me dislike her more. Nothing wrong with being bright and beautiful- I married a woman exactly like that.
Tom Cruise- dude- what happened to you? Katie and Nicole could have done so much better. They stand heads above you...literally.
Matt Lauer- mistakes interrupting for interviewing.
George Bush/Dick Cheney/Karl Rove- something about getting that whole Iraq thing wrong that still sticks in my craw.
Al Gore- I am still just mad at you for not showing what you showed personality-wise in An Inconvenient Truth.
And last but not least....
Bindi (as in the Croc Hunter's daughter)- this whole tour just smacks of needing the money. Respect your Dad's legacy, get an education and then if you want to save animals do so. The media spotlight isn't a cure...
Posted by: cd | February 1, 2007 1:29 PM
On second thought, Billy Bush is not nearly as annoying as the insufferable James Woods. I noticed I had more women then men on my list and maybe that doesn't matter but here are more men that make me want to scratch their eyes out:
Tom Cruise- double tool; I pray Katie wakes up from her coma and leaves him.
Nicholas Cage- I HATE his voice, he probably thinks he sounds like his idol, Elvis. He just sounds like a congested a**wipe.
Geraldo Rivera- psuedo-journalist. I'm so grateful his show was cancelled.
Rush Limbaugh- eeek- has to make inflammatory remarks just to get people to notice him
Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton (tied)- ditto
Ben Affleck- he can't act himself out of the proverbial paper bag
Puff Daddy- instead of aiming to be a "better boyfriend" to the mother of his kids (d**khead), why not marry her?
Posted by: Plamar1031 | February 1, 2007 1:29 PM
I can't stand Jamie Lee Curtis. She hasn't made a good movie, oh I don't know...ever. Also, she's always so rude to the journalist who is interviewing her. Have some class, please.
Posted by: Noelle | February 1, 2007 1:30 PM
Al Pacino! Yelling and making faces is not acting!
Posted by: Michael | February 1, 2007 1:31 PM
Sandra Bullock. Can't stand her. Arnold S. And Bruce Willis. Or maybe I just hate the movies they're in (pulp fiction excepted).
Posted by: Rita | February 1, 2007 1:31 PM
I have to add, though, that I actually love Diane Keaton. "Annie Hall" is one of my favorite movies. I don't think she has poor style, I just think she's unique. It seems like she really knows who she is and doesn't care what others think.
Posted by: Noelle | February 1, 2007 1:31 PM
After the movie Speed came out, there were several years when I absolutely could not STAND Sandra Bullock - but she has laid low of late and is currently off my radar -wish so many of the others would do so as well!
Posted by: W | February 1, 2007 1:32 PM
David Spade, Rob Schneider, and Adam Sandler - I think of them as the trio of annoying little men from Saturday Night Live.
Nelly Furtado - no idea why.
Nicole Kidman for all that Botox in her forehead.
The band Creed.
The Olsen twins.
Posted by: Lalla | February 1, 2007 1:32 PM
Dr. Phil McGraw, soooo creepy, and, yeah, Rachael Ray, hate her too. But the worst, hands down, President George W. Bush!
Posted by: Pat | February 1, 2007 1:33 PM
I think that Jeremy Piven is the epitome of the person you love to hate. My boyfriend and I talk about this every time we watch Entourage. The worst part? - You almost get the feeling that he is trying to make you hate him. But for some reason you keep going back.
Although I do hate Angelina Jolie (and hated her before she moved in on Brad Pitt, whom I also now inexplicitly hate), it's not the same... I have no problem staying away from her.
Posted by: scr | February 1, 2007 1:33 PM
Oh goodness, where to begin?
Ben Affleck - stealing Jennifer Gardner from Michael Vartan did NOT help him in my book.
Leonardo DiCaprio - I have tried to watch so many of his movies, and they're all boring.
Patrick Dempsey and Milo Ventimiglia - I cannot stand their hair! It's so disgusting looking!
Interestingly enough, while there are plenty of actresses I dislike, I can't think of any I despise. Closest would probably be Jennifer Love Hewitt, but only because she's in such a stupid TV show - it's really more hate by association.
Posted by: celebhater | February 1, 2007 1:36 PM
Anne Curry. She's so bloody earnest. I can't even watch her.
Oh, and George Bush, if he counts as a celebrity. First I couldn't look at him, then I couldn't listen to him, and now I can't even read what the man says without wanting to PUKE!
Posted by: WMX | February 1, 2007 1:37 PM
Can't stand Soledad O'Brien. She thinks she is just so smart in the way she says her comments to other people on the show. I have watched her say something about a story and after watching a clip, I see a man being interviewed that had said the same exact thing! She just restates what she hears and claims it as her own thought. Too bad though because I really like Miles.
Posted by: Jenny | February 1, 2007 1:37 PM
I can't believe no one has mentioned Leonardo diCaprio--what a dough-faced lump!
Posted by: gaithersburg | February 1, 2007 1:38 PM
Angelina...not because she's a skanky ho-home-wrecking freak. She can't act. I think all of her movies suck and I fall asleep in all of them. Great for insomnia.
Posted by: Sharon | February 1, 2007 1:38 PM
Oops, I forgot Hillary Duff and all those other Disney-Channel-manufactured pseudo-stars. Yeccchhh. "Raven" and "Hannah Montana" and Brenda Song and that lot, all properly "diverse" appearance-wise but all exactly the same with their obnoxious "spunkiness" and Valley Girl twittering. All of which must be ensured by most parents of preteen girls. Lindsay Lohan used to sorta be one. I think I like her better now.
Posted by: Jill | February 1, 2007 1:39 PM
I can't stand Heather Grahm for some reason. I actually was happy when she supposedly bit the dust in From Hell.
Posted by: One More | February 1, 2007 1:39 PM

re. VA Mom:
i don't think my mom considered me as some lifeless, personality-less blob in my first few months. "more drawn" to certain children? that's why so many of us become screwed up -- because parents play favorites, whether unintentionally or not. that's my two cents since you raised the issue. my original comment was just that i irrationally don't like her, even before all this brangelina stuff. and gratz that she donates so much $, doesn't mean we all have to love her.
someone mentioned sigourney weaver! i really loved her in Aliens but that's about it. ripley kicks ***.

"Endured," not "ensured" re the Disney Channel. Reveling in the abhorrence made my hands shake.

I have to jump on the wagon with this one:
"Gwyneth Paltrow - in some interview recently she used the word insouisance. It drove me into a bitter fit of hate for inexplicable reasons".
She just tries way to hard to come off as being an intellectual. If you really are an intellectual, you usually don't go around using big words and telling people how much you read. It annoys the crap out of me. Plus, her moving to Britain and engaging in more 'interesting' conversation than she has here in America only points out her desire to try and be something she's not (a So-Cal dumb blonde who went to a total party school) Her Oscar in the field she was up against was wholly undeserved, it should've gone to Cate Blanchett - who can act circles around Gwyneth. Apple and Moses - please, get over yourself. Personally, I think she wins the smug award.
Posted by: asrm | February 1, 2007 1:41 PM
WMX, as to Ann Curry, her real problem is she can't bloody shut up! Watch her in an interview; she asks a question and then answers it, too. She's like a happy, nice Bill O'Reilly. Invariably. The piss-poor excuse for a journalist never lets her subject get a word in edgewise.
Posted by: Sarah S | February 1, 2007 1:45 PM
I've got mine: Nicholas Cage as mentioned earlier, Kevin Costner, Renee Z, and a big old hop on the bandwagon for the Jennifer Love Hewitt hate.
BUT. I happen to know one of the biggest targets here. I work in humanitarian aid, and I must say that every time I have encountered Angelina Jolie, she has been warm, kind, funny, articulate and well-informed. (In a crowd of people who live and breathe development, she can hold her conversational own.)
Contrary to what someone said previously, I DO want her to be my friend. And in the isolated few minutes I've spent with her, she hasn't given me the impression that she thinks she's too good or too important for me. She does make me feel like a toad (she's radiant in person) but that's not her fault.
Now perhaps if I ended up stuck in an elevator for five hours with Nicholas Cage, or any of them, I'd change my tune. Maybe they all have personalities (though I doubt it) but I can say first-hand that in Angie's case, she's really very nice.
Posted by: WDC | February 1, 2007 1:46 PM
so glad some people wrote nick cage - can't stand him, and no one understands why. i think he's ok when playing a bad guy but when he tries to be likable i want to punch him in the face. blech.
also don't like that guy from extreme-home-makeover ... he always wants to hug everyone even when they look half scared of him. STOP WITH THE EXCESSIVE HUGGING. and he yells so much.
and seacrest, and every camera-hogging minimal-talent pop princess.
i know there are more ...
Posted by: ffx | February 1, 2007 1:47 PM
How has Mariah Carey not come up yet. She is horrible! everytime i see her anywhere I throw up in my mouth a little bit. GROSS!
and Jennifer Garner too... I can't explain this one, but everytime I see her cutsie little smile I want to punch her in the face.
Kirsten Dunst used to be on my list simply because the entire time I was watching Crazy Beautiful I couldn't stop thinking, when will this greasy girl take a shower!!! She's not so bad anymore though.
Posted by: dcgirl | February 1, 2007 1:48 PM
I can't stand Demi Moore (which didn't stop me from reading the Vanity Fair cover article on her recently). I first saw her in the soap General Hospital and she couldn't act, then somehow she ended up in major films. She still can't act. Some guy stopped me on the street once and told me I looked like her and I almost slugged him. Rumer, Scout, Tallulah -- poor children!
Posted by: Neelie | February 1, 2007 1:49 PM
To WDC re Angelina as lacking friend potential, I knew it was unfair to say that. It's her *image* I'm wondering about, and that is no doubt far from the reality of the person.
Moving on, how can we leave out Ann Coulter?! I'm quite CERTAIN I don't want to meet HER!
Posted by: Jill | February 1, 2007 1:50 PM
Kelly Ripa! Almost forgot how much I cant stand the sight and sound of her! Cant stand the show Regis and Kelly either... I think she was actually worse than Kathy Lee Giford on that show and I never thought that would be possible. Also, Madonna... fake british accent and all... just irritating!

It could either be really fun or a train wreck. Either way, don't you want to say you were there?
Posted by: Liz | February 1, 2007 1:52 PM
I can't stand James Taylor. His voice and songs make me want to knock myself unconscious just so I don't have to hear them anymore. Going to Carolina...please do, and then never come back to bother me again!
I have never encountered anyone else with this aversion, but that's the point of this exercise, right?
Posted by: Eddie | February 1, 2007 1:56 PM
Jill- YES on the Ann Coulter hate. Though it's almost a different category, since we hate her for well-documented b*itchiness. It's not like we're jealous, or don't like her eyebrows, or think she got something without deserving it. She's truly a mean, rabble-rousing, hateful person. Or maybe it's her schtick, in which case, I say leave it to Stephen Colbert.

Posted by: dfjkds | February 1, 2007 1:57 PM
OMG!! I thought I was the only one who was totally repulsed by Jennifer Love Hewitt! I hated her the most when she had that stupid pretentious show after Party of 5 - I think it was called "Time of My Life". It just gave her an excuse to sing every week - which she can't do. My roommate would make me watch it every week because I entertained him by yelling and throwing things at our TV. My favorite part of one of the "Scary Movies" was when they were doing a parody of "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and the girl called her Jennifer Love Huget*ts. Wow, I needed to get that out! Also included are Owen Wilson - get a nose job already! Angelina Holie - that's not a typo! Ray Romano and that whole show made me gag! Oprah is too self-righteous. Jessice Simpson, and Britney Spears have no talent whatsover. Justin Timberlake has to realize that he is he anti-sexy - blech! Ok, I'm done for now!
Posted by: Hewitthater | February 1, 2007 2:00 PM
Oh, this is a fabulous list! It's going to be such a relief to get this off my chest!
Hilary Swank - for whining about being prosecuted for carrying an orange into Austrailia. You're an Oscar-winning actress who I'm sure isn't hurting for money. Pay the fine and get over it.
Katie Holmes - for being perfectly accepting of her circumstance, which is being a young, beautiful adornment to Tom Cruise and giving up her promising career to spend his money in excess.
Gwyneth Paltrow - We get it. You think you're better than us. Stay in England, and hopefully they can deal with you maneuvering around like you're next in line for the crown with that stick up your butt I completely believe that Oscar was a fluke. If Marisa Tomei can win, anyone can...
Eli Manning - for whining about having to play in San Diego and then getting dad Archie to bail him out to New York. It took John Elway a long time to get over that curse - how long have you got?
Oprah - don't know why...
Whew. :)

After looking at everyone else's lists, I just had to add a few more of my own:
Julie Chen -- she's a joke on CBS today and an even bigger joke "hosting" Big Brother. Bafirst!
Kelly Ripa -- Sorry dear you aren't as cute and charming as you think you are.
Dr. Phil -- the male Oprah. If you can't live your life by cliches, it just ain't worth it.
Ty Pennington & the whole crew on Extreme Makeover -- too much screaming, too much phoney empathy for all of the hard luck stories, and too much of the same floor plans. Boring!
Eva Longoria, Terri Hatcher -- get over yourselves. You both lucked out in getting cast in a show that became a hit. Let's see what you do after Desperate Housewives.
And, I also agree with the dislike of Jennifer Lopez and the hideously untalented Jessica and Ashlee Simpson. I feel so much better now.
Posted by: pnina | February 1, 2007 2:04 PM
While I agree with the Cruise, Affleck, Lopez, Hewitt haters-
Teri Hatcher. Jeez, over-exposed much? It's like she's in junior high. "George Clooney doesn't like me." "Ryan Seacrest kissed me and ran away." Ugh. Oh and Ryan Seacrest is bad too.
Posted by: phanie | February 1, 2007 2:06 PM
Christian Slater... that guy has creeped me out for years!!!
and Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie... I mean seriously what possible reason do we have for caring one iota about what they do on a daily basis... eek

this is a great forum to get this off my chest. i've seen some today show hateration for matt and natalie, but i CAN'T STAND anne curry. she was clearly picked over for the host job, she sucks at interviewing since she never give the person a chance to speak since she knows every darn thing and she's so fake happy with her #3 position. whatever anne, you're a loser and they went to the view to find a replacement for katie since they didn't want your corny act. stop faking it!!! i also think ben affleck is all hype as is his ex girlfriend jennifer. as if she invented big booties. whatever for her too.
wow- this was a great forum and funny as ever! thanks!

Julia Roberts = horse-face
Renee Zellweger = chipmunk-face
And the thought of Kiefer Sutherland makes me throw up in my mouth a little.
Posted by: SD | February 1, 2007 2:08 PM
I have no new names to add, I just wanted to say that I feel united with everyone who has posted here by a fluffy cloud of warm, fuzzy hate. It's a special feeling. This is the best blog post EVER.

"Hate" is a strong word, but...
Anderson Cooper, Al Franken, Tony Kornheiser, Barry Bonds, Barefoot Contessa, Diane Feinstein, John Kerry, Terry Gross
Posted by: LostSprings,WY | February 1, 2007 2:11 PM
"Ray Romano (Not everybody loved Raymond!) -- his voice makes me cringe!"
OMG, I totally agree! And the brother, too. Made me laugh to think he was a cop! And I'm from Long Island!
Also on my list:
Hillary Clinton, heck Bill, too
Al Sharpton
Kathie Lee
Sasha Cohen (the figure skater)
Mona from Who's the Boss
Norah Jones, Celine Dion, Macy Gracy, and Mariah Carrey -- as soon as I hear the first note, I'm changing the station.
Everyone on American Idol
New York and Flava Flav

My irrational hate: the lady who is in the Overstock.com commercials. I hate the breathiness and attempt at overt sexuality from this monochromatic idiot. (her hair matches her skin and it bothers me.)
Posted by: Danielle | February 1, 2007 2:16 PM
I'm with cd on Condoleeza Rice -- she comes off as icy and aloof, though I have no idea if she really is that way. Nontheless, not endearing. Also, never cared for Helen Hunt, whose popularity baffled me. Gwyneth Paltrow reminds me of the princess and the pea fairy tale. Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, and the like are loathsome. This is so hysterical and therapeutic! Great topic!
Posted by: ch | February 1, 2007 2:17 PM
I forgot about Mariah Carey. There is something wrong when you have tons of money, access to fashion designers, but can't find a decent thing to wear.
Posted by: Lisa | February 1, 2007 2:18 PM
Ok this is my third and hopefully final post (this has been soo cathartic, Liz- thanks!)
Matthew McConaughey- really don't get why he is the sexiest man alive. He annoys me to no end- he really believes in his own hype. And he should put on a shirt- his body is not that hot.
Tyra Banks- a younger Oprah, just as annoying and self-righteous with a forehead you can see from space.
Dr. Phil- and the rest of the Oprah endorsed crew (except for the brilliant Toni Morrison).
Posted by: plamar1031 | February 1, 2007 2:18 PM
Oops...That's Macy GRAY I wanted to type!! Ha!
And I'll add all the wannabe's in their 20's right now (Lohan, Simpson X 2, Hilton, Spears, etc.)
Posted by: WDC | February 1, 2007 2:19 PM
Missy Elliot. Don't know why. I usually find a soft spot in my heart for musicians from Virginia, but she drives me nuts.
No one has mentioned Natalie Portman yet? Gorgeous? Yes. Intelligent? Maybe, haven't met her. Watchable? No. The girl telegraphs her lines and was a main reason I hated the last three Star Wars flicks. I haven't liked a movie of hers since "Leon."
Tyra is a problem - I hate her and I like her at the same time. I couldn't help but get behind this girl recently when she slammed the tabloids for calling her "fat." But her show is ridiculous, her attitude is pompous, and her smugness is thoroughly aggravating.
Justin Theroux - only because I read a quote of his in which he stated that he thought it was okay to toss a brick through a window of a McDonalds or Starbucks, since those companies only care about profits. Coming from someone who had a role in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle? Yeah, buddy, that movie wasn't cashing in on the success of the first flick. That was art.
Honorable mention goes to:
Kirsten Dunst
Keanu Reeves
Nicholas Cage
Oprah
the Hiltons
Mariah Carey
Ashlee Simpson
Posted by: musicgeek | February 1, 2007 2:21 PM
I've gotta go with Nicholas Cage. His voice, his hair, his face, his 30-minute marriage to Lisa Marie -- it all just gives me that unquatifiable ick factor.
And the other one I don't think anyone has mentioned is Isaiah Washington. I hated him before hating him was cool. I have LOVED Grey's since the first episode, but have never been able to stand him. Something about him gives me the icks too!
Posted by: The Ick Factor | February 1, 2007 2:21 PM
I love Tom Brady & hate Peyton Manning.
I detest the two Jennifers - Lopez is too diva-ish and Gardner is too Cutesy-Cutesy.
Posted by: Arlington | February 1, 2007 2:22 PM
The woman from the Room Store TV commercials...Ugh.
Posted by: Maryland | February 1, 2007 2:22 PM
Beckham and Posh and their bosom pals Tom and Katie;
Tyra;
anyone from a VHI Celebreality series (although mostly that Mini-Me guy);
Kim Basinger (because she's just so completely weird);
Melanie Griffith/Jessica Simpson/Anna Nicole Smith/Paris Hilton and all those others using the "dumb-blonde" schtick.
Posted by: VA hater | February 1, 2007 2:22 PM
Uugh ... commercials and people in commercials that I hate is another topic entirely.
Posted by: The Ick Factor | February 1, 2007 2:30 PM
Meryl Streep. We all get it: you're going to wear a wig and maybe some glasses and do a subtle accent. Here's another Golden Globe for the pile.
Posted by: Columbia Heights, DC | February 1, 2007 2:30 PM
How oddly soothing to read this article...I have been jumped on for my "irrational hate" of various celebrities, but clearly not alone here. I've also been challenged for irrational undying love (tommy lee jones comes to mind or sam neil)...
so, without further ado...
eddie murphy in drag/fat suit/makeup
sienna miller - come back when you are actually interesting (see gretchen moll)
mischa barton - the last time she didn't annoy me she was throwing up on haley joel osment
m. night shymalan - its not that we don't get you - you actually suck.
nia vardalos - that movie wasn't that funny and deep down I think you knew it.
Posted by: metoo | February 1, 2007 2:30 PM
I am yet another Diane Keaton hater. I think it is her smugness that makes her so annoying. One of my favorite moments on film is when Al Pacino smacks across a D.C. hotel suite after the Senate hearings.
"You will NOT take my children!" Whack!
Posted by: Delmar | February 1, 2007 2:36 PM
Donald Trump...but does anyone *not* hate Donald Trump?
Dr. Phil. UGH.
But I love Tyra. She's so wrong, she's right again.
Posted by: h3 | February 1, 2007 2:37 PM
I forgot about Barbra Steisand, Jane Fonda and Hillary Clinton, these are people I try to forget are on this planet!
Posted by: M | February 1, 2007 2:37 PM
I HATE Jennifer Aniston.
Posted by: hazel | February 1, 2007 2:40 PM
Oh, yes, I COMPLETELY agree with the Helen Hunt haters. She is another that seems to have a very high smug factor.
I haven't seen Charlie Sheen mentioned yet, but that guy is about as smarmy as they come.
And does anyone else hate Lance Armstrong? I never liked him, but when he and Sheryl Crow were together--constantly talking about how "amazing" the other was (with Lance saying how "f***ing talented" Sheryl was--then with the hanging out with Matthew M. all the time acting like God's gifts to everything . . . . And those fricking yellow bracelets ARGH!
Finally, I have a friend who firmly believes that Jennifer Garner is a man.
Posted by: Northerner | February 1, 2007 2:43 PM
"eddie murphy in drag/fat suit/makeup"
metoo, I so wanted to include this on my original list, but then my hatred of him and his completely unbearable mean-spiritedness turned into like a page long rant...so I cut it. Thanks for bringing it up in your list!
Posted by: janie | February 1, 2007 2:44 PM
Scarlett Johansson.
I'm so sick of her superiority complex about having a voluptuous body. All the attention she gets for her boobs makes me feel worse about my own body than seeing anorexic starlets - we all know they look bad! And then she wears clothes that always puts them front and center. Yes, Scarlett, we know you have boobs, stop rubbing them in our faces!
Posted by: A | February 1, 2007 2:45 PM
I hate Denise Richards - puke! She is one of the ugliest women, yet so many people think she's sexy (and talented - that's a laugh). I think she looks like she wants to eat me. I also had to agree w/ the Brendan Frasier haters out there - god, that guys is a moron! How on earth did he get to be so famous?
Posted by: | February 1, 2007 2:46 PM
David Spade,
Hillary Clinton - she is icy cold in real life.
Posted by: Arlington | February 1, 2007 2:48 PM
Oh, and Beverley Mitchell from 7th Heaven, which is an utterly detestable show to begin with.
Posted by: musicgeek | February 1, 2007 2:50 PM
I can't STAND Julia Roberts!!! Pretty Woman my ass - more like The Joker from Batman.
Posted by: El Novio de la Muerte | February 1, 2007 2:53 PM
This flipping blog just made my day! I never knew so many shared my irrational dislike of people I've never met.
Katie Holmes - girl has a lazy eye and everybody knows it.
Bill O'Reilly - how can you take a man seriously who has that much make up spackled on his face? You're a joke dude!
Fergie - again, i wish she had od'd on the crank. When I hear her songs, I want to ask myself how we got to this all time low in American music. Fergilicious? Give me an effing break. Seriously.
All of the trash-tastic "starlets" who have been bojangling around flashing their private parts to the paparazzi. WHERE ARE YOUR PARENTS? WHY DO THEY LET YOU ACT LIKE THAT? BUT ON SOME D*MN UNDERWEAR.
And I just want to thank all of the other people who said Renee Z., Helen Hunt, Nick Cage, Rush Limbaugh, Ryan Seacrest, etc.
This blog is just spectacular.
Posted by: also liz | February 1, 2007 2:56 PM
I absolutely cannot stand Vanessa Minillo on Entertainment Tonight. Her baby voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me.
I also hate Regis. Kelly only irritates me, but I'd like to hold her down and pour a couple of milkshakes down her throat. If she gets any thinner, she's going to snap like a twig.
Posted by: Didi | February 1, 2007 2:56 PM
I hate Lindsay Lohan's Parents.
Michael and Dina Lohan are toxic parents who ruined their child life for fame.
Posted by: Bunny | February 1, 2007 2:57 PM
Madonna - Ok, I get that you can reinvent yourself every 2 months, great. But find yourself already - and for goodness sake cut out the British accent, please, who do you think we are??
Britney - what a train wreck, can't get enough, keep it coming (love that she's going to be a Jew now)
Karl Rove - nuf said
Posted by: DSG | February 1, 2007 2:57 PM
Yep, hate, hate, HATE Maniston. I think she's a neurotic, needy, talentless hack. Boring as hell. Plays the same character over and over again in her movies. Don't know why people think she's da bomb. No wonder Brad left her.
And as many people love to hate on Angie, seems like she has just as many defenders. So people can say good things about her, as well as bad.
Maniston OTOH? Can't think of a single good thing to say about her.
Posted by: Karmela | February 1, 2007 3:00 PM
Heck, I hate just about everyone in show business. I can't truly think of ONE male or female actress/singer/cebebrity that I think is actually talented or doesn't give me the willies.
Posted by: Tracey | February 1, 2007 3:03 PM
can we get a little hate for Kirstey Alley?
Posted by: Lt Savic | February 1, 2007 3:03 PM
The target of my irrational celeb hatred has to be Verne Troyer (Mini-Me from the Austin Powers series). He just bother the living s#!+ out of me, for no explanable reason. My skin just crawls every time I see him on TV.
Posted by: VoR | February 1, 2007 3:06 PM
(grr, i'm so hating that i typed up something, and hit submit ONCE, and it didn't go through, and I'm retyping and will prolly be embarrassed to see it posted 20 times consecutively!)
Love the lists, people are really coming up with good ones!
I hate Jennifer Love Hewitt, dislike to tolerate Jennifer Garner, and go back & forth on JLo. Love Jenny-From-The-Block, but think she herself is fooled by the rocks that she's got (used to have a little, now you got a lot? you have no idea where you came from...the bronx?).
I detest all of the Friends, particularly Jennifer Assiton and Courteny Cox-Sucker. Talk about smug. And I blame them for the straight hair-n-superskinny trend in the late 90s.
Celebhater -- How can you hate on the hair of Milo Ventisexia and Patrick Redempsey? Their hair is what keeps them rolling in cash! Luxurious locks rock.
Speaking of rocking, and rocking it hard, Barb, I no understand how you can hate Joey Heatherton! Do you also hate Lola Falana? 70s Starlets ROCK! Back in the day, you weren't famous for just showing up (talking to you, Paris/Kimberly/Nicole/LiLo/Britney), you had talk shows to go on, guest appearances on Love Boat, albums and Vegas shows, performing for the troops and on telethons. Ah, I miss the olden days.

Word on the Kirstie Ally hate.
Oh, and Sheryl Crow. Talk about your over-hyped, self-important hacks. My cat sings better than her. AND he's cute and cuddly.
Posted by: WDC | February 1, 2007 3:14 PM
The woman from the Room Store commercials is HOT!
Posted by: | February 1, 2007 3:15 PM
And Kirstie Alley?! She was just ok for a while, and then she became the Face of Jenny Craig.
Grrr, shut up Kirstie. You make me angry, and you don't want to see me when I'm Really Angry.

thank you to everyone for such hilarious yet pithy, laserlike comments. i have laughed out loud reading these. the person who wrote one can see tyra banks's forehead from space gets a medal.
additional observations: both donald trump and rene zellweger appear to contipated. how else to explain the furrowed brow and squinched up look? more fiber, folks.
other annoyers: angelina jolie and brad pitt. if you want to make a difference in new orleans, don't buy a $6,000,000.00 house. go live in the 9th ward.
dennis miller - nasally and grating
ann coulter- a sex goddess masquerading as a republican? me thinks not.
anna wintour, vogue editor - talk about an icy dominatrix, her demeanor is almost unbearable
condi rice- an excellent example of the peter principle.

Oprah, Madonna, Sarah Jessica Parker, Paris Hilton, Rosie O'Donnell, Donald Trump, Michael Jackson, Tom Cruise, Hill and Billary Clinton, Lindsay Lohan, Brittany Spears, any grown woman who weighs 85 pounds soaking wet, Imani, Aretha Franklin, Courtney Love, Macauley Culkin after he grew up, Jennifer Lopez, Kirstie Alley, all of the Osbournes, everyone on American Idol, any politician, Bette Midler, Jennifer Anniston, Angelina Jolie, that Owen guy Kate Hudson was dating.
Posted by: | February 1, 2007 3:17 PM
I'm so glad someone else doesn't like Jennifer Garner! It's not that there's really anything wrong with her, I just think she's so average looking and her talent is also just so average. Why is she famous?
I can't believe that someone doesn't like James Taylor! To each his own, but that's shocking to me.
"No one has mentioned Natalie Portman yet? Gorgeous? Yes. Intelligent? Maybe, haven't met her. Watchable? No. The girl telegraphs her lines and was a main reason I hated the last three Star Wars flicks. I haven't liked a movie of hers since 'Leon'."
Have you seen "Closer"? I think Natalie Portman is amazing. In my opinion, her poor performance in "Star Wars" was based on a poorly written script, not her acting skills.
Posted by: Noelle | February 1, 2007 3:18 PM
Robin Williams. I'm so tired of his constant mugging and his "I'm so funny! Love me, love me, love me!" attitude. Yuck.
Posted by: Judge C. Crater | February 1, 2007 3:19 PM
Anyone who goes by their full name.
Jennifer Love Hewitt (ditsy bimbo)
Sarah Michelle Gellar (talks through her teeth)
Sarah Jessica Parker (horse face)
I'm elated to know I'm not the only one who loathes and despises JLH. My sisters and I for years have called her Jennifer Love Puke-it. I can't even look at her face. I have to change the channel. Furthermore, any man who likes her is worthless by association. My husband says that she is the female equivalent of Ashton Kutcher. Is this true guys?
Oprah because she gives off the feeling of "You people NEED me. You are nothing without my wisdom and insight." Epitome of wealthy elitist who has lost touch with their roots.
Well done Liz. You made my day.

Its Nancy O'Dell, whom I watched butcher the news in South Carolina. She couldn't read, couldn't enunciate, couldn't remember who was President/Mayor/Governor/her own name. Makes perfect sense to me that she's a big hit in Hollywood now - the airheaded leading the airheaded.

Add me to the "I Hate" Train for Will Ferrell, Bill Cowher, and Jennifer Love Hewitt. Hate em: No talent, smug, and incredibly cloying an unattractive.
Oh, and Ben Stiller/Owen Wilson? It's OK to turn down work; we won't miss you. The idea of a third Fockers movie (a few posts ago) makes me break out in hives.
And I think Oprah's name really was supposed to be Orpah but it was spelled wrong on the birth certificate. Don't ask me why I know that, but now you do too.

To celebhater: I'm with you on Milo. Have you noticed that he talks out of the side of his mouth. He keeps twisting it to one side that just irritates me to no end.
I forgot Eva (I can't shut my mouth and keep my private life private) Longoria. She even went so far as to discuss how that Tony guy is in bed. Shut up.
And P Diddy. I hope Essence does a retraction for the cover story that had him and his doormat on the black love cover.

Tom Brady. Don't have any rational reason but he just irritates me. I even like the Patriots, but I cannot stand Tom Brady.
