Friday List: Stars We Hate to Love
A couple weeks back I unwittingly set off a torrent of star-hating when I unburdened myself of a lifelong, and somewhat inexplicable, aversion to Diane Keaton. Three-hundred-plus comments later, an initially tentative response had morphed into a cacophony of contempt by the end of the day. I only can imagine if I had detailed my much deeper abhorrence of Dabney Coleman. The mind reels.
(Aside: In an informal and highly unscientific count Angelina Jolie emerged as the most-hated celebrity for Celebritology readers. She was closely trailed by Oprah Winfrey and the "insouciant" Gwyneth Paltrow.)
Although we offered up varied reasons for our loathing, the common thread was an immediate and visceral dislike. Today, after prompting from Celebritology readers, we turn this mother upside down and -- keeping in mind that this is a (mostly) anonymous forum -- come clean about the stars we hate to love.

Yet again, Liz takes advantage of any opportunity to feature a picture of me, Lindsay Lohan. (AP)
Your hate-to-love should be a star who is generally reviled or dismissed as a talentless hack, yet you can't seem to join in the condemnation and, in fact, you harbor secret admiration/attraction to this person. For instance, you love Tara Reid/Corey Feldman/Jeff Foxworthy even though we all know she/he/it is a skank/loser/unfunny twangy automaton.
The best way to explain this list is probably to start by sharing a few of my very own guilty loves:
1. Lindsay Lohan: I have every reason to dislike this woman. She's the antithesis of the qualities I admire, a shameless paparazzi baiter and her music is some of the worst dreck to ever assualt my ears (which is saying a lot). Still, I find myself pulling for her. Who knows, maybe I see some actual talent peeking out from under all that hype?
2. Simon Cowell: The guy is a first-rate tool and he continually sports the loathed V-neck-sweater-without-a-T-shirt look, but as a newcomer to "Idol" I find myself liking him despite his pompous persona.
3. Arnold Schwarzenegger: Arnie is perhaps the hardest for me to admit. He's a big dumb beefcake of an actor who built his career on action-adventure blockbusters (I'm more of an indie girl), but still he's got a certain je ne sais quoi. There's something about "Are you Sarah Conner?" that charges me up and if I happen to run across "Kindergarten Cop" on late-night cable, I'm apt to stay up.
There, I've said it.
Who do you hate to love? Join me in my mortification. After all, what's a Friday without a little humiliation?

Tyra Banks, Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie - those we love to hate, we also often hate to love.
Leonardo di Caprio, has, for most of his career, been too pretty, too skinny and too wimpy, but since "The Departed," he's been beefy and hot. I don't know what happened. I used to hate him, but now I kinda love the guy.
Patrick Swayze. Zero talent, as an actor and a singer, but if I see "Dirty Dancing" or "Road House" while I'm flipping channels, I'm watching it.
Kelly Clarkson - TV-created pop star turns out to be kind of edgy and intriguing...who would've thought?

I used to love Kenny Chesney. But now he won't admit it.
Posted by: Chesneyphile | February 16, 2007 11:03 AM
I hate to love that guy from extreme make over home edition. What a mook. He's too old to go around with gel in his hair like he's a lost member of N'Sync. And most contractors would take to kindly to the super tight shirts and flared jeans. More like an interior decorator, not that there's anything wrong with it.

I'm ashamed to admit I actually like Paris Hilton. I think she's hot - it must be those pouty eyes and slim figure. Yes, I'm an idiot.
Posted by: Ted | February 16, 2007 11:08 AM
Well, I have to say even though Ralph Fiennes and potty sex on the airplane is just gross, I would probably still go see any movie he is in.
Also I like the fellas from "Queer Eye" even though they can be catty and mean.
And this is a fictitious person, but I can't help but love Patsy from Absolutely Fabulous.

So many people made fun of Nastassja Kinski in the 1980s-- the accent, the nepotism, the degraded dirty girl roles over and over again-- but she is my FAVE, would watch her in a soup commercial.

Tom Cruise - Yeah, he may be the Scientology Jesus, but he's a hell of an actor.
Posted by: BF | February 16, 2007 11:14 AM
Ty Pennington. Lord help me.
Posted by: Ha | February 16, 2007 11:15 AM
Clay Aiken.
Idol years, at least. Recently "love" is sliding towards "apathy"...but is it telling I feel a little like I'm betraying Clay for writing that?

I have to admit that I can't stand the sight of Cameron Diaz. Could she please get a hair stylist to cut that crap on her head? She just looks "riden hard and put up wet" to me.
Posted by: pgf | February 16, 2007 11:18 AM
TOm Cruise & Richard Gere are creepy, Travolta is getting creepy. Paris used to be intriging, now she's just trash.
guilty pleasures: Jessica Simpson (when she was Mrs Lachey), Real Housewives of OC
Posted by: annapolis | February 16, 2007 11:21 AM
Ty Pennington, absolutely. If all he did was run around with the bullhorn, I'd just tune him out, but I can't help but be touched when he quietens down and just talks to the people on his show.
Jeremy Clarkson is a British dude who hosts a show called Top Gear, which increasingly goes out of its way to make fun of Americans. He's a loudmouth, arrogant, brash arsehole, but God help me, I think he's brilliant.
Musically, there's Robbie Williams and...*sigh* the Spice Girls. I don't understand it either. But I love Baby Spice's solo stuff, especially.
Posted by: 23112 | February 16, 2007 11:21 AM
Ryan Seacrest. I want to hate him,but I find I admire everything that he's accomplished. Also Russel Crowe, the guy gives me the creeps but I have to admit that he's talented.

My huge crush on Mick Jagger is my deep dark secret. He's gross but SO sexy. What's wrong with me???
Posted by: Jam | February 16, 2007 11:22 AM
Reba McIntire, not her music (god forbid), but her silly, mostly not funny sitcom, although I do like it when she calls someone a MO-RON (long O) and I did get a little giddy seeing her reaction to the Dixie Chicks winning all those awards.
Posted by: dym | February 16, 2007 11:22 AM
For me it's been Natalie Portman, for a long time (maybe too long if you know what I mean). She seems vapid in person in her interviews and appearances. Her acting chops are pretty limited (I think it's remarkable that her best performance is still "The Professional," when she was 13 or so). But something about her looks--she's this close to the second coming of Audrey Hepburn--really draws me in. And on top of all this, my crush on her is pretty unoriginal. I hate it, but I love her.

J.Lo
The girl always looks fabulous!!! I just can't stand all her attention getting antics prior to Marc Anthony. I'll watch Selena over and over and over again. Oh, and the Wedding Planner. Am I doomed?

Another vote for Ty Pennington.
And (am I really going to type this).....Charlie Sheen.
Posted by: biddy | February 16, 2007 11:23 AM
Dakota Fanning....She may seem to be a bratty little kid who bites of more than she can handle, but I think she is a really good actor. I love her in silly movies like Uptown Girls and I love her in Man on Fire and I am Sam.
Posted by: 2bmar | February 16, 2007 11:25 AM
David Caruso. Ever since NYPD Blue, I've found his unique "acting" somehow mesmerizing. I even went to see the movie Jade. CSI:Miami, though, has been a hard road - he's so over-the-top cheesy.
I also have deep and shameful love for the movie Xanadu, the music of Bonnie Tyler, and The Price is Right.

You all know Ty has ADHD that's why he's the way he is?!
Guilty pleasure -- Flavor Flav. Big creep factor, but I watched both seasons. Eek.
And Dr. Rey on Dr. 90210. Can't seem to find the episodes this year (I missed the dog funeral one!).

I admit I love Lindsay Lohan too.
She was really great in Freaky Friday and Mean Girls. She is truly very good. I hate to see her spiraling down. It makes me sad.

Sorry about the double post. I got an error message after the first.

Tori Spelling. She's a terrible actress who got a job from dad, but I find her oddly intriguing none the less.
Donna Martin graduates!

Hugh Grant. He cheated on his girlfriend with a hooker and has only ever played one character. Still I see everyone of his movies. I think its the hair.

Oh yeah, also Shania Twain. The goofy songs - even "I feel like a woman" - just get under my skin.

Jerry Springer, because I live in Cincinnati and he is our former mayor, TV news host and radio commentator and was smart and funny in those roles. (And on the same side I am on politically).

Hate to love Britney Murphy - sure she got super skinny. But from clueless to uptown girls i just love her for some reason!

Lucy Lawless- I love Xena- I am so blushing right now.
Barry Manilow- He makes me smile
Vin Disel- Why is he so watchable?
The Rock...

I'm with you on Simon Cowell, Liz. He's such a jerk and something is horribly wrong with his hair (a flat top with a part kind of?), but I like his unapologetic jackassedness for some reason.
And...I like Gwyneth Paltrow. I was too scared to admit it during Hatefest '07, but I dunno, I think she's alright.
Posted by: Emmie | February 16, 2007 11:32 AM
"Hugh Grant. He cheated on his girlfriend with a hooker and has only ever played one character. Still I see everyone of his movies. I think its the hair."
And the accent...Can't wait to see the new movie, though I think that Raymond guy is in it and I can't stomach him (not "everybody" loves Raymond).

I hate to love Fred Durst. It is awful. My friends make fun of me for it.
Posted by: Falls Church, VA | February 16, 2007 11:36 AM
Sarah Michelle Geller - Mostly hate her in interviews and that she married Freddie Printz but man she was great as Buffy. (oh yeah i hate to love that show too)

I hate that I secretly love all the original boys from Beverly Hills 90210. I'm a grown woman, but Brandon, Dylan, and David still do it for me.
Posted by: Tdot | February 16, 2007 11:38 AM
I love Bob Saget. Not so much Full House Bob Saget that most people remember, but stand-up comedian and past host of America's Funniest Home Videos. His stand-up persona is so polar opposite to clean-cut asexual Danny Tanner and it's shocking (and pretty disturbing) to hear some of the things that come out of his mouth. I love it. I always picture him saying those things on an episode of Full House, and then little Stephanie and Michelle's heads explode from the sheer raunchiness and unwholesomeness of the whole thing. Very not family friendly, I love the duality.
Also, America's Funniest Home Videos is one of the most brainless vapid shows ever on television and essentially serves to showcase the stupidity of the common American. With terrible segues and jokes. I think this is my favorite show on television and I love that Bob Saget called in his hosting gig on almost every episode. Bad set-up, bad delivery, and you could tell he really didn't care towards the end but he did it anayway. I love this man.
Posted by: Charlietown | February 16, 2007 11:38 AM
Jeremy Piven-I know he's a complete tool, but he's smokin' hot. It makes me sick that I absolutely LOVE him.
Nicole Richie- Yes, I wish was underfed socialite with great fashion sense and no-talent socialite for a best friend.
Victoria (Posh) Beckham-I admire that fact she knows she married well, and she not afraid to show it.
Posted by: Lisa | February 16, 2007 11:42 AM
Tom Selleck... OK, I'm old school, but he was great as Magnim PI.. but he was in some Lame Movies, excepting Quigley Down Under.. Thank God he cant sing

Keanu Reeves. All of his poor acting has this strange appeal to me-- like a moth to a candle. This has been going on since he was Ted Logan.

I hate to love the "Girls Next Door" also known as Hugh Hefner's girlfriends. As a knee-jerk response, I hate the girl-as-toy symbols they've become, but they seem to truly be sparkling, fun, kind, smart women that I secretly wish were my best friends because they just seem like a fabulous group of people.
Posted by: Washington D.C. | February 16, 2007 11:50 AM
i hate to love bobby and whitney. i am secretly hoping for a reconciliation and a joint trip to betty ford so they can be a family again. i just watched the vh1 "behind the music" on new edition and learned of his metamorphasis from boy band to solo hottie and even though his ego is the size of texas and he's weird, i still don't hate him. they are truly beauty and the beast on crack, but i say "they belong together!"
Posted by: Loren | February 16, 2007 11:51 AM
I love Britney pre-K-Fed and right after when she was on David Letterman. Except for her "My Perogative" which is totally hot. But I'm 27 and intelligent and somewhat professional so I feel I should hate her but I can't. I love her.
"I'm a... slaaaaaaaaaaaave for you..." Sigh... those were the days...
Is it wrong to love soaps? I know I should hate those too. But I get so into them and find myself picking up soap magazines in the grocery aisle. Ugh. I actually hid a $25/week habit of buying every soap magazine every week for a year. So embarassing... Some people like crack, I like my ABC Daytime.

Washington D.C. I thought I was the only one! I too hate to love the Girls Next Door. Kendra's laugh gets on my nerves and I can't belive how stupid she is, but I am facinated with all of them. (By the way, Holly's my favorite, whose yours?)

steven seagall...those cheesy lines..those horrible movies...why???

Kid Rock and Justin Timberlake.
Actually a friend and I discussed over the weekend how we were embarrassed to admit that we "sort of kind of liked" JT.
Kid Rock is just so white trash, but a few years ago, I just started loving to scream sing his music while driving - which I have admitted to no one but this anonymous blog!
Posted by: Betty | February 16, 2007 11:59 AM
I should be smarter than to care about:
Lindsey Lohan...the movies she made before she became "La Lohan, Household Name" were actually good. I thought she might be something....
Britney Spears. Lord help me, if it's her name, I click on it. No matter how unbelievable (six female parners indeed!), I still read it. No matter how ugly the story is. I just shake my head and feel intensely sorry for her and what a fool she's been.
Posted by: Laura | February 16, 2007 12:03 PM
Eminem. And I'm a female...
Also love Girls Next Door (Kendra looks a whole lot better with make up on) and the boys from 90210 (though the College David, not the HS one).
Posted by: Columbia, MD | February 16, 2007 12:03 PM
Oh my gosh - totally hate to love Girls Next Door too (for the same reason!!) My favorite is Bridget - I actually feel sorry for Holly - she's been with Hef (who is 80!) for five years and really wants to marry him and have kids! I think I am just fascinated by the whole thing for some reason!

Melinda -- I'm totally with you. ABC Daytime is my guilty pleasure, and I've given up on trying to hide that fact. And my absolute favorite/hate-to-love soap star is Jack Wagner. I adored his character on General Hospital, Frisco, back in the day. But it's a bit cheesy to admit I love him to most people since they only know him from (1) Melrose Place or (2) as that guy who had a song in the '80s.
And, until about a week ago, I would have told you that my other favorite hate-to-love star was Ms. Anna Nicole.

I agree but I think it's mostly cause I think he's hot just as long as he isn't speaking.
I even have what I like to call my "Keanu List." It's comprised of guys like him, good looking but kinda vapid like a male Paris, that I just want to spend the weekend...um...what's the safe phrase here....boffing?porking?f-ing? whatever, you get my meaning.
Just as long as they don't speak. Don't talk just do me, do me as long as you can as hard as you can.
Matthew McConaughy is on that list, as is Scott Weiland, Tommy Lee & a few others that I can't remember right now.

i hate to love britney. even though i don't like her music and never have, i'm sadly pulling for her, if only because i think someone in her life should know better. and she can afford people who do know better. but no one is stepping up.
i hate to love anna nicole smith, but i do.
and finally, michael jackson. i know he's a creepy mofo and i do not condone child molesters, it just seems like he's had the saddest life and clearly feels he's trapped in the wrong body. i used to have life-sized posters of him when i was in the 4th grade, back when his music was awesome, his nose was big, and his skin was black.

There are few celebrities I hate to love:
Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, and Nicole Ritchie-For pretty much the same reason as Liz, I am rooting that they come out on top of all their drama.
Michael Jackson-You have to admit, he has made some good music. While my childhood fantasy of being his wife ended after Thriller, hearing his music still puts a smile on my face and causes me to tap my feet.
L.C. from MTV's The Hills-I know she is a spoiled rich girl but I can't help getting sucked into her drama.
MTV Reality (if you can call it that) Shows-My obsession with Real World is finally over but I still can't help getting caught up in Real World/Road Rules Challenge, The Hills, True Life, Made, Pimp My Ride, etc. What makes it worse is that I am in my early 30s but I enjoy it all the same.

This is truly embarassing, but I have to admire Anne Heche for managing to come back from complete whackdom. It's also embarassing to admit I watch and like her in "Men in Trees".

I love to hate Madonna - she's been very trashy at times and self-aborbed, but I love her music from the 80's to the 90s, from her dance music to her ballads. (When I work out I listen to her greatest hits (ballads) - the same tape over and over and over again). She has great style, a nice looking husband and kids.
Posted by: Madonna | February 16, 2007 12:41 PM
Phil Collins. There, I said it. (Well, typed it.) Immense natural musical talent, both on drums and as a singer, and he chose to do really crappy pop music that now reeks of the neon-colored, over-synthesized 80's.
And yet, if I hear one of his songs, I'll listen the whole way through and have it in my head for days! Oh, he makes me look like the coolest rock star ever, by comparison, too.
D@mn you Phil Collins!

As of today, Liz Kelly is pretty high on the list.
Why go through your life hating people?

It's just the whole trashy train wreck that fascinates me.

Keanu Reeves. Zero talent, totally wooden and one dimensional, no voice inflection. But I have to watch him.

I, too, am a closet Britney fan. I keep hoping she'll pull it together and give me another good dance album, bless her country little heart. And Neil Diamond is another. See him live - the man rocks! Not that I'd admit it.

I hate that I love to watch Real Housewives of Orange County. I hate the spoiled, bratty kids....I hate Jo who uses her BF for money and cars, but then complains about him wanting to spend time with her...I hate all of the various vapid blondes with fake boobs....and I hate that I can't turn the channel anytime it comes on Bravo. (Even re-runs....help....)
Posted by: Minnesooota | February 16, 2007 12:46 PM
I, too, hope LiLo will someday show she does have talent.
After the Grammys, I heart Justin Timberlake (I am in Memphis, so I guess some loyalty should be expected)
I would pay to see Ralph Fiennes read the phone book.
I still have high hopes for Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy and Robert Downey Jr. Not so much for Judd Nelson.
James Spader, mmmmm.

Oprah- I'm really torn about this one. On one hand I dislike the way she is towards rappers and the foul behaviour towards Ludacris. On the other hand she does a lot of charity work and she's made a success of herself, I admire and love her.
Angelina Jolie- no matter what, I just love her. Charity work, possible insanity, the whole shabang.
Jennifer Lopez- she can't sing, we all know this but I have "Waiting for tonight" on the iPod and I just love her, for reasons that I can't understand let alone explain.
Tyson Beckford- at one point I participated in a hatefest about this man. Actual fact, I love him and that beautiful calendar photo.
Marc Anthony- not so much to look at, scrawny as hell, one swift wind and he's gone but I love him. It might be for his singing, not quite sure.
Billy Bush- he is cheesier than Ben's chilli fries and despite that I like him.
Keanu Reeves- from the Paula Abdul video to infinity.
Posted by: petal | February 16, 2007 12:49 PM
I hate Meredith from Grey's Anatomy - last night episode "close to death" was pathetic - everyone was crying for her. I still love the show though.

I hate to love Adam Sandler. His early movies like "The Waterboy" just made my skin crawl but now even though I don't want to admit it but since you asked, I am finding he's actually talented.
Posted by: M | February 16, 2007 12:59 PM
Howie Mandel - Never funny, not much talent but it's an honest goofiness.
"Aside: In an informal and highly unscientific count Angelina Jolie emerged as the most-hated celebrity for Celebritology readers. She was closely trailed by Oprah Winfrey and the "insouciant" Gwyneth Paltrow."
Wow, I would think that people's who are vapid or real jerks would lead the list. Reflects kind of badly on society I would say.

Am with you on Lindsay Lohan, Liz. I still enjoy "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen." And, after just seeing "Girl, Interrupted," I've taken Angelina Jolie off my love-to-hate list.
OK...Owen Wilson. Plays the same character in most movies, but I always like them. And he did well as an animated car.
Adam Sandler - used to be too much of a snob to watch his movies, but the fact is there's always a sweetness underlying the doofiness. And "Spanglish" was great. Ben Stiller, too - can't help it.
Jennifer Lopez for her versatility. Natalie Portman for her performance in "The Professional." (And can I mention, in the "love to LOVE" category from that same film, Jean Reno?)
Thanks for another fun post!

I find that I am fascinated by The Girls Next Door. It's disturbing, gross, and like a train wreck that I can't stop watching.

Well after the hate fest, I hate to admit that I like Jennifer Love Hewitt. I think she's adorable and her new show is strangely fascinating to me.
I'm not a huge Britney fan, but I do love the song Slave 4U.
Posted by: Fuzzy Cat | February 16, 2007 1:13 PM
I hate to love Anna Nicole Smith, too - even if she was possibly manipulative and self-serving. There was an aura about her that sucked people in and created some serious devotion, but she also had a vulnerability that was moderately touching.

Ditto Steven Segall and his is three-syllable titled awful movies. Like we're supposed to buy that he can take down anyone with that gut. Hard. To. Believe. I always give him kudos for still rocking the pony tail, tho.
Jamie Foxx no longer has a humble bone in his body since he started his singing career, but I still enjoy his comedy.

Hey good call on Ben Stiller. I loved the dude on his Ben Stiller show years ago. He was funny and creative - all those different characters. Now he's in every d*** Hollywood comedy film playing (basically) the same old character and the movies are basically not funny or good. I watch them hoping ONE of them will be really funny and good. But I still like him a lot.
Posted by: charlie | February 16, 2007 1:37 PM
Paris Hilton (I bought her CD, my wife asked that I sleep on the couch and think about what I did)
Vin Diesel (I liked Chronicles of Riddick... big guy in SciFi movies, he can carry it)
John Travolta (getting closer and closer to a couch-jumping of his very own)
Nick Nolte (causasian version of Flava Flav... long gone, lights on but nobody home)
Richard Dawson (when he starred in "The Running Man", his reputation on Family Feud was sealed)

Still don't want to admit this one...but...it's Jennifer Love Hewitt.
I was at the video store (in between my netflix foreign films and TV dramas) and I realized I had seen almost all of her b-movies on cable.
And liked them.
Shame does not begin to describe me.

I have to admit that I like listening to Leonard Nimoy sing "Both Sides Now" which is such a sappy song if you listen to the lyrics, and Spock only has an OK voice, so why does it make me cry?
Posted by: Barb | February 16, 2007 1:48 PM
I hate to love Pamela Anderson. She married two disgusting, creepy guys that remind me of the gross uncle that no one would allow to be alone with the teenage girls during family reunions, and she embodies everything I despise in terms of being a woman, but she is a tireless, unabashed animal rights advocate, and I have to respect that. Destroy your body with surgery, marry disgusting men--that's your prerogative--but I have to love someone who stands up for animals.

I can't help but love all the girls on Charmed (and the show is one of my secret faves). I love Alyssa Milano's character, Phoebe, love Piper, and even loved the b*tchy, ex-90210 Shannon Doherty.... What can I say?? I think maybe it's their banter, I enjoy. I don't know. But, I love love love the show.
Oh, and, of course, I certainly love Cole (i.e. Julian McMahon) and this is not a secret love! He's damn hot!

I LOVE the Girls Next Door. I'm a pretty serious feminist and overall should hate them. But I love them, and if Hef offered, I'd love to move in to my own room like Bridget and Kendra and hang out. I'd want 8 crazy pets too. Bridget's angry cat is the best thing about the show, and I think Holly is an undiscovered wit.
But no, I can't really admit that to anyone..

Oprah, Regis and Brad Pitt. I just can't help myself.

Keanu Reeves. He can't act his way out of a wet paper bag, but oh I love watching him try!

Go to gofugyourself.com if you want to see a highly amusing case of frustration with/affection for Lindsay Lohan.
I'm becoming more and more ashamed of my love for Nicolas Cage -- ever since I saw Vampire's Kiss. What a great, silly movie!
I'm also with the JloHewitt lover. Ghost Whisperer is totally stupid and absurd, but I would kill for a cushy antique store job, an hourglass figure and totally fictionally awesome hair.
Sigh.

Uma Thurman - she can't act in anything outside of a Quentin Tarantino film and she's oddly beautiful in one shot and unattractive in the next, but I can't not read every article about her and I've seen Kill Bill 10 times (and I'm female).

Not sure if she qualifies as a celebrity, but Monica Lewinsky. When she graduated from the London School of Economics I though, "You go, girl." I even read her biography way back when, and came away thinking that she'd be fun to have as a friend. Crazy, I know!
Posted by: New England | February 16, 2007 2:16 PM
Re Jagger: my friends have recoiled from me in horror when I mention I find him incredibly sexy and hot even though he's not easy on the eyes. Most people love him for the music, not many of us for his sexiness... Oh well, maybe there's more of us out there...

OK, I have a long list of these but here are the main ones:
Tara Reid - As Liz points out, a total skank but I could never get sick of watching her drunken escapades on her "Taradise" show on E!
She seems really bubbly and would probably be fun to party with but a total drunk a** idiot nonetheless.
Kendra on "The Girls Next Door" - ugh -
Another dumb skank but she also seems bubbly and fun, and the most in touch with reality of the 3...
Anna Nicole Smith - so trashy, so country, so much a gold digger, but had a down to earth appeal that I couldn't help loving - who knows why
Eminem - white trash and crazy but kinda cute and mysterious somehow
Ralph Fiennes - still on my hate to love list even after the in-flight antics - seeing him in The English Patient - mmmmm
LOVE HIM, LOVE HIM!!!

K-Fed: John Water's comments started me thinking, then the Nationwide commercial which was pure gold. I am really starting to worry that he is fading into obscurity without his singer/foreground dancer wife tagging along and I fear for a boring future without K-Fed.

John Munch, alias Richard Belzer, first on "Homicide," now on "L&O SVU." Skinny, pockmarked, cynical, but smart as a whip. Did you know he nearly made the cut for the 1st SNL? Imagine what might have been...

I will posit K-Fed as a possible hate-to-love. Of course he's not much to brag on, but neither is he deserving of so much universal ridicule. Is he more unsavory than so many of those "focused-upons"?

I almost forgot -- Vanessa Minillo. While I love her style and general good grooming habits, I detest that she's become nothing but Nick Lachey's arm candy. Sweetie, isn't it time to call your agent for a job beyond TRL?
Yet I devour every news about her. I'm rooting for her to succeed. Go figure.

Islamorada Girl - COPS! Yes!!! I'm so ashamed to love that show...nothing can make me feel better about my own life like COPS!
I also hate that I love any show with videos of high-speed car chases.
And American Idol. Yeesh.

I can't believe no one's said this but I like Macauley Culkin, I'd love to see him in more roles but I'd never tell my friends this. And obviously all of metro DC loves the Girls Next Door, especially hardcore feminists like me. I think its fascinating, they are so completely different than anyone that I talk to on a regular basis, their lives are regulated by this 80 year old who doesn't let them take overnight trips, yet they are happy.

Ah, going to the movies in the "good old days" was so easy. We did not have to concern ourselves with the political beliefs of actors. Gary Cooper? Cary Grant? Jean Arthur? They all kept their politics to themselves. Now that so many leftist Stanislovsky-types have outed themselves I avoid them like the plague: Sean Penn, the Clooney guy, Paltrow, Sarandon, Robbins. They have the right to believe any thing they want but it is my ten dollars, the price of a movie ticket.
Posted by: mhr | February 16, 2007 3:01 PM
Woody Allen comes to mind. I love his older movies, but with his problems, and his negativity, I don't quite feel the same.
David Letterman - sometimes he is hilarious, other times pathetic.
Bob Dylan - his music is greatest ever. However he is not very loveable as a person.

I hate to love Survivor and Celebrity Fit Club. My embarrassment is so profound that I turn the channel immediately if my husband comes in and catches me watching either. As for individuals, I have to agree with the earlier posts of Ralph Fiennes and Hugh Grant. There's no tawdriness quite like stuffy English tawdriness!

I forgot Anthony Bourdain. In real life, I would run like hell from a 6'5", 100 pound, chain-smoking, absinthe-drinking, leather wearing smart aleck that likes to eat unmentionable things in far off jungles and wield sharp knives. But, I can't get enough.

Isaiah Washington -- long before Grey's Anatomy, which I've never seen, I learned to love his swagger in films like Love Jones and on TV flicks like the misunderstood and hopelessly in trouble dad on New York Undercover. Now he seems to have lost his mind, so I have to abandon my crush for saner celebs.

Hate to love Hugh Grant, too. Divine Brown notwithstanding, those eyes, and the hair, and the accent . . .
Also, and this is much stranger, I am fascinated with Suze Orman, the overly excited financial woman that seems to be on tv all the time. (I like to call her "Sooz" even though I think her name is pronounced "Suzie.") I don't think I've ever watched her for more than five minutes, because she's kind of scary, but I do stop and pause every time I see her in something, and exclaim "Sooz!"

Okay, I'll also admit that I (hate to) love Nicole Ritchie. She had kind of a wry sense of humor and some good one-liners on the Simple Life. I also think she's cool-looking (if she gained some weight back) and not as staggeringly dumb as the the other tabloid girls.

Prince. I hate divas usually and he is SO in-your-face diva - but damn, he just rocks.
Clay Aiken. Hope that doesn't automatically turn me into a Claymate although a guy who can turn that many people into honest-to-gosh slaves is pretty impressive for that alone. But he's really funny when he's on these talk shows and can he SING! He's also kind of hot.

LOATH: Pam Anderson, a pneumatic nothing. Charlie Sheen--his arrogance to me is like chalk on a blackboard.
TORN: Brangelina. So thoughtless, so self-involved, yet doing so much good for humanity while they preen themselves about.

I hate to love the whole Grey's Anatomy cast. I'd never seen the show before a few weeks ago, and now I'm totally sucked in (and cried like a baby last night).
I also hate to love LC from Laguna Beach/The Hills. I thought the rest were terrible, but her drama was always so riveting!

Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin. I hate to love them independently or together. Alec's smarminess has grown on me, and Kim's recent episodes of wackiness (let's buy a city!) are fine because she's wickedly awesome in L.A. Confidential.
Speaking of which, I love to hate Kevin Spacey. I don't know or care what his sexual orientation is, but I have a tiny shrine in my heart for him.

Like many of the other posters, I also can't get enough of certain reality shows and their no-talent stars: Lauren Conrad, any MTV Real World/Road Rules challenge, and the worst of all -- Grease, You're the One That I Want

I second the Judge Judy and Dr. Phil love. They're so loud and bossy, but they're like your grumpy grandparents who are so annoying because they're usually so right about everything. I yell at the T.V. with them an embrace my inner angry old man. As for my favorite Girl Next Door: probably, Holly, but maybe Bridget. Holly is hilarious and subtle. Bridget is goofy and seems so full of joy. Totally compelling show. So glad that so many other serious D.C.-types also enjoy a little SoCal silliness!

Actually Hugh Grant once made a movie where he played a different character. It was made in England, didn't get much play here. I think it was called An Awfully Big Adventure.

I agree with the Shannen Doherty hate to love. I will watch a show just because she is on it and when there is a huge fallout (as there inevitably is) and she is out the door, I stop watching(Charmed, 90210. Irrational, I know but I can't help myself.

Jessica Simpson, although I admit she's beginning to wear on my patience. I don't know, yes she's stupid, but hey, she always made me laugh on the Newlyweds.
Tom Cruise - OK, yes, his whole Scientology thing is just weird and annoying. But I LOVE his movies! I actually thought MI:3 was really good! And as much as I hate to admit it, he really is good looking.
Posted by: tinaj | February 16, 2007 4:41 PM
oh, yes Charmed. I love it and the women on it. But you know, I am not embarassed by that. Why should we be embarassed by any of these. Obviously lots of people love all these things, so what is the issue? Different strokes....

Naomi Campbell - she is crazy as a betsey bug but I love her. I'm ashamed of her because she beats up her assistants all of the time but nonetheless she is FABULOUS!

I hate to love Briteny. Even though she never fails to do something S.T.U.P.I.D. I never fail to be dissapointed in her because I want better for her. Aaargh. (I felt the same way about Monica Lewinsky, but she's been keeping a nice low profile, so I have been able to move on.)

Okay, I'm 45 - an original MTV watcher. I LOVE MTV reality shows like Made, any of the Challenges, Sweet 16, True Life and now...Juvies. I have to pretend I only watch them because my kids do.

Why is everyone so hung up on Angelina Jolie? There's no other celebrity that can match the good works she does. Now, don't go saying she's a homewrecker because Brad's home was a house of cards just waitinng to tumble down.

Kimora Lee Simmons- loud and self absorbed and good friends w/Tyra B. yet I think she is a smart cookie; I love how she has her own clothing line and that she caters to all sizes.
Pam Anderson- an overly made-up, drag queen-looking gal but seems like someone you wouldn't mind hanging out with.
Angelina Jolie- took part in a breakup of a marriage but somehow manages to redeem herself (in my view anyway) with her work with Unicef and other charitable organizations. I like her so much more now than I did when she was w/that Billy Bob Thornton guy.

Why are people who love Angelina so hung up on whether other people love Angelina? I love Jennifer Aniston (not hate to love her, just love her), but frankly, I don't care whether other people do or not. I'm sure all the Brangelina fans will respond with various arguments that loving Jennifer is different because she is self-absorbed, annoying, etc. Maybe you should all form a cult and wear vials of Angelina's blood around your neck.

"Why is everyone so hung up on Angelina Jolie? There's no other celebrity that can match the good works she does."
Seriously, good work? Adopting a couple of foreign kids? There are kids in this country in need of good homes, too. And there are plenty of people in need of help in this country that should not have to depend on the government -- she should know since she's got a place in LA now.
Also, Paul Newman comes to mind. As does Oprah, Michael J. Fox, Hootie and the Blowfish, and Bill Gates (not so much a celebrity for acting, but nonetheless a celebrity). And that's just off the top of my head, I'm sure there are a lot more.
Posted by: Tired of Angelina et al. | February 16, 2007 5:12 PM
William Shatner- he IS truly shat-tastic. Can't act, bad rug, made one of the worst "musical" recordings ever, yet I love him . Bless his cheesy little heart.
Andy Dick - creepy and over the top crazy, but hilarious.
David Spade- smarmy with a CAPITAL S, but I think he's really snarkiness. What the hell happened to The Showbiz Show?

Amen, NAJ! I unapologetically love the ones I want to love and hate the ones I want to hate. I feel no shame. I can't pass up Road House when it's on cable. I admire Pam Anderson and Madonna for basically building empires out of being trashy hot. Despite many good things she has done, I can't stand Oprah. Martha Stewart has grown on me. Always loved Judge Judy and now love Judge Marilyn Milian. Tom Cruise is insane, but still makes good movies. And even though he's a sexist pig (and a Republican politician), I can't help but love Arnold! I will tell anyone who asks me any of these things and more!

I hate to love: Barney.
Before I had kids, I couldn't stand the simpering tyrannosaurus. Now that I have two kids, I've come to appreciate the big purple bastard for his other-worldly patience and maniacally relentless good cheer.
I still think he's sending out subliminal messages that will turn our children into Manchurian-Candidate-like killing machines when they turn eighteen, but for a half-hour of peace, I'm willing to live with that.

Britney Spears- I've always loved her, and even though the whole K-Fed/crotch showing mess am the first one to say she'll come back! I know it. I sort of hate myself for that.
Kid Rock- Although I realize that he is actually kinda nasty at the same time I find him kind of sexy. Ew. I know.
Also I totally agree with the Girls Next Door. I'm addicted to their complete idiocracy.

Everyone who ever was/is/will be "America's Sweetheart" - Julia, Meg, Katie, Lindsey, Kirsten...
All of the "I'm NOT as stupid as THOSE girls!" girls - Jodie, Clair, Calista, Camryn, the "other" Jennifer Beals, Pink...
All the "Kickin' A** and Takin' Names" girls - S. M. Gellar, K. D. Lang, Jenn Garner, Tamara Dobson, Pam Grier
Adam Sandler, Dan Ackroid, Chevy Chase, Anna Nicole Smith, Rosanne, Rosie O'Donnell (before she came out bitter), Dr. Laura, Judge Judy, the Room Store lady, the Burger King, the Quiznos Rat (I'm not just a primary incredient - I'm also a spokesmodel), the Wanta-Fanta girls...
So, much love... so little time.

Sarah Jessica Parker! Hate-hate-hate her. Why? In love with herself, surprisingly, 'cause she's butt ugly. Looks like washed up Jewish American Princess, wait, she is washed up Jewish American Princess. Can't act, has no style, is high school dropout, did I say can't act? Always plays same character - - ingenue whom guys fall for - - despite fact that she's pushing 40++ and ugly as sin.

i hate to love carrie underwood, especially when she (and i) are belting out "jesus take the wheel". i'm telling you, it's unbelievable how good i make her sound.
i don't like watching her perform in person though because she sort of squats when she's going for her money note. it's embarassing.

Bridget is my favorite because she is so sweet and I can see why Hugh adores her. Kendra is a moron and I hate hate hate her rapper style posing but I love (and hate) to watch her. Holly is kind of pathetic but truly beautiful. Why do I, a normal nice well-educated girl, watch these pseudo hookers? I just dont know but I love 'em.

Journey. I will play air guitar to "Don't Stop Believing" even if it comes on while I'm waiting in line at CVS. I do not care. There are two types of people in this world - Journey fans and liars. Otherwise, I think I have impeccable musical taste. No idea what happened with that one.

Lindsey alcohol bad work ethic but she always looks fabulous on the red carpet.

I hate to admit I like Melanie Griffith. She has messed with her face too much, sounds like a grade-schooler, and I was appalled when I saw pictures of her lighting her young daughter's smoke, but somehow she just seems like a good person.

Clay Aiken...he walks on the stage and owns it. A friend, a Harvard med student who would not think it's cool to like Clay Aiken, agreed to go to a Clay Aiken concert with me. We both thought we'd be mildly entertained. Less than five minutes after Clay's appearance on stage we were both jumping and screaming like banshees...we came under a spell. He's got some charisma that's for sure.

Hate to love The Real Housewives of O.C. Has America really come to this? They are white trash with money...so empty and soulless. Heaven forbid any real tragedy comes into their lives. And would someone please arrest the amateur-baseball-player- wanna-be son for his abusiveness toward his younger sister? I look forward to that episode.

William Shatner.
He's become a self-parody and I should find his act annoying, but I don't. I am a longtime Trekkie and have long since heard the stories of what a line-counting, scenery-chewing prima donna he was... but I love the guy.

Britney Spears:
I think because we're the same age, but it feels like the popular girl from high school just showed up to my office as a temp. I waver between enjoyable pity (I'm not supposed to have a nicer wedding than a celebrity) and total denial. Still, I am completely obsessed.
Katie Holmes:
I almost bought a "save Katie" tee shirt. She's the modern twist on the girl meets prince, becomes princess, and seems completely lost in the process. I would kill to read her diary.

hate to love:
Martha Stewart, god bless her she's made a mountain out of a mole hill, hasn't she?
The Rock, has absolutely no acting skills yet what a hottie!
Love to hate:
Samantha Brown from the travel channel, partially jealousy and mainly wishing she would stop being REALLY annoyingly facile, just be normal
New York from I Love New York and Flava of Love. Caked on, baked on make up and what a shallow mess!
Rachel Ray, take it up a notch and don't act like so much of a bumpkin, wide-eyed bushy-tailed
Starr Jones, please.
