Guilty Pleasure: Movies to Watch Again and Again

The first time I saw "Airplane" it was projected on the wall of my family's villa in Italy. I was maybe nine years old and thought an inflatable autopilot, a guy who spilled drinks down his face and, well, feces hitting a fan was hi-larious. As I matured, I found new nuances to delight me in "Airplane" -- the teen me felt smug recognizing cameos from Barbara Billingsley, Kareem Abdul Jabar and a young Joe Izuzu (David Leisure). As an adult, I snicker at the subtle (and not so subtle) dialogue and I have finally come to appreciate Julie Hagerty. I've also been known to fast forward through the DVD to hear the lines from Stephen Stucker's Johnny ("I can make a hat or a brooch or a pterodactyl.")

"Airplane" is just one of the movies contained in a box I keep close at hand. The fact that this box didn't go into storage with the rest of my household belongings during our year-long house renovation is a testament to its importance. Inside this box are scenes and characters that have the perennial ability to mesmerize me. Rather than becoming stale, they seem to grow ever more precious with age. Each repeated viewing entertains me with the same joy I experienced on the first viewing. These are movies I can watch again and again -- often to the chagrin of Mr. Liz.

We all have a favorite movie, and usually, we want our favorite movie to make a statement about who we are -- politically, creatively, morally. We choose our favorite movie shrewdly, mindful of the message it sends to those who ask, usually hoping for a clue about what makes us tick.

Our guilty pleasure movies are not the movies we'd necessarily label a "favorite." They're not embarrassing so much as a little unremarkable. They are movies that, if you did identify them as a favorite, would draw blank stares. They may not make a statement or they may slap us in the face with one, they may contain corny humor or revel in pseudo-intellectuality, they may be dated in the worst way possible or contain special effects so hokey you can't help but grin at their moxie for trying. Often, we can't explain why it is we like these movies; we just do.

Today, we share those movies with each other. As usual, I'll go first:

Airplane
Pete's Dragon
Pride and Prejudice (all 300 minutes of the 1995 BBC miniseries)
Some Kind of Wonderful
Jesus' Son
Urban Cowboy
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Terminator
Suburbia
The Fifth Element

I showed you mine. Show me yours in the comments section below...

Auntie Mame
Better Off Dead
The Poseidon Adventure
The Fifth Element
Robocop

Posted by: spoon | March 30, 2007 11:18 AM

Without question: "Tremors," with Fred Ward, Kevin Bacon, Michael Gross, Reba McEntire and Finn Carter...I don't care much for horror movies generally, but this one had just the right combination of humor and thrills to make it one I've seen at least ten times...I'll watch it every time it is on cable, particularly HBO or pay cable, so I can hear the unexpurgated "F*********** YOU!" Kevin Bacon says to the giant groundworm that has brained itself on the side of the irrigation ditch...The sequel Tremors 3 isn't too bad either...

Posted by: Dan | March 30, 2007 11:18 AM

If I see The Princess Bride, Office Space, or Real Genius, I feel compelled to watch.

Posted by: D | March 30, 2007 11:19 AM

OK most of mine are chick flicks:

The Cutting Edge
10 things I hate about you
Indian Summer
The American President
Dirty Dancing
Center Stage
Step up (New! I love good dancing movies!)

Not so chick-flicky:
The Princess Bride
Clue (with Tim Curry - is genius!)

Posted by: Chickflick | March 30, 2007 11:22 AM

yes! i thought i was one of the only people in the world that LOVE the Cutting Edge, glad to know there are others.

Posted by: to phan | March 30, 2007 11:22 AM

Oh and almost anything with Molly Ringwald in it!

Posted by: Chickflick | March 30, 2007 11:23 AM

"This is Spinal Tap" (the commentary on the DVD is great. It's like a whole new movie)
"Falling Down" (love the scene in fast food restaurant)
"Stoned Age"
"UHF"
"Casino"

Posted by: BF | March 30, 2007 11:23 AM

Casino - if only for Sharon Stone's wardrobe & hair & Joe Pesci.
I Dreamed of Africa w/ Kim Bassinger
the Godfather 1 & 2, of course

Up there with anything Julia Roberts is in and Rat Race with John Cleese... in fact, Fierce Creatures with John Cleese I'll watch again and again too.

Posted by: Caitlin | March 30, 2007 11:31 AM

Wayne's World
The Life Aquatic
Batman the movie (circa 1966)
Austin Powers, International Man of Mystery

Serenity
The Godfather
Blade Runner
The Fifth Element
Air Force One (Get off my plane!)
Ice Age (love that uber tracker)

and, if the 5.1 surround sound is cranked-up:

Armageddon (I know the dialog is lame, but the sound and FX are awesome)

Posted by: SoMD | March 30, 2007 11:35 AM

I meant "Airplane!"

Posted by: Introverster | March 30, 2007 11:35 AM

Royal Tennenbaums
Ninja Scroll
Clue
Lady Snowblood
Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart to Hades
A Better Tomorrow Part 2
Pulp Fiction
Stacey (Japanese school girls get "Near Death Happiness" from "Butterfly Twinkle Powder" and come back as flesh-eating zombies that have to be "repeat killed" and cut into 368 pieces)

You might not know it from this list, but generally speaking, I prefer my violence to be cartoonish, and perpetrated by a pretty girl who has a REALLY good reason to be brutally murdering scores of folk.

Posted by: Rita | March 30, 2007 11:36 AM

Oh, also, Anchorman.

Posted by: Rita | March 30, 2007 11:37 AM

We made this list a while ago, which is exactly your question: http://cosmodromemag.com/node/14

I second Airplane and anything with Molly Ringwald!!

The Goonies
Say Anything

Posted by: Betty | March 30, 2007 11:45 AM

I second Pride and Prejudice. Though I see the merit in the new Keira Knightley version, there's nothing like a night full of Colin Firth to get a room full of my friends swooning and giggling.

Also, Dirty Dancing, Babe, and The Nightmare Before Christmas. I'm a sucker for Danny Elfman.

Every time I hear the exchange between Marv and Harry "Why the hell did you take your shoes off?" "Why the hell are you dressed like a chicken?" I double over with laughter.

Posted by: Kelly | March 30, 2007 11:48 AM

Wow, "airplane" is so not one of my guilty pleasures. I am proud to quote that movie at any given moment and watch it whenever it's on. I own it and surprised I haven't worn it out showing it to people that for some strange reason or another haven't seen it yet.

My true guilty pleasures are:
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the original)
The Cutting Edge
Desperately Seeking Susan
Ice Castles
Best in Show
Turner & Hooch
Ghostbusters 1 & 2

Posted by: Melinda | March 30, 2007 11:48 AM

Cool Runnings
Clueless
Happy Gilmore
You've Got Mail
Princess Bride
Tommy Boy

Posted by: Julie | March 30, 2007 11:49 AM

* Suddenly Last Summer (can we please say goodbye to streetcar Named Desire? this is the BEST Tennessee Williams adaptation! Liz Taylor, Kate Hepburn? Montgomery Clift? what's NOT to love!?!)
* Alexander Nevsky (Battleship Potemkin put me to sleep, but this one is riveting!)
* Heavy Metal (wow...dumb, epic, funny!)
* The Wall (what an over-acted, under-edited mess! I love it to death! Music ain't bad, either)
* Tommy (see my comments about "The Wall)
* Star Wars (The VERY first, nothing else)
* Star Trek: Wrath of Khan (Wisconsin doesn't have as much cheese as this hilarious stinker!)
* Escape from With Mountain (Once upon a time, Disney made exciting movies. This was the best)

Posted by: PeterB | March 30, 2007 11:49 AM

Yes, Charlie, Joe Vs the Volcano! And lots of these movies I wouldn't consider being "guilty pleasures." Airplane! is high art in my book.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Pretty in Pink
The Breakfast Club

to Peter B: wow - Nevsky! Didn't expect to see that one! I'm a choral singer and 6 or so years ago sang along with the film at an NSO concert at Wolf Trap. We were behind the screen, so didn't get to see it. I'd love to have the restored version on DVD, but I think you have to buy a whole Eisenstien set.

Trivia bit - this is the first movie to have a soundtrack written for it (by Prokofiev).

pride and prejudice (the 2005 movie)
roxanne

moonstruck
sabrina (audrey hepburn, humphrey bogart)
three days of the condor

Posted by: vermont | March 30, 2007 12:07 PM

Few of the movies mentioned thus far are embarrassing. The movies I'm truly guilty about are bad TV tearjerker romances from the seventies featuring Glynnis O'Connor, Robbie Benson, et al. For instance:
The Boy in the Plastic Bubble
Jeremy
Ode to Billy Joe
I also have lots of Disney movies (although I have no children). I feel so much better for getting this off my chest! My hipster friends would never understand. I literally hide my copies of these films in a cabinet, the way some people stash porn.

Posted by: someone | March 30, 2007 12:08 PM

i can't believe no one mentioned Fletch

Posted by: dpicolo | March 30, 2007 12:10 PM

Bend It Like Beckham
L'Haine (Hate in the US)
Matisse (Cafe au Lait in the US)
Clockwork Orange

I actually watched L'Haine 3 times in one day, but I can't find it on DVD.

Posted by: | March 30, 2007 12:15 PM

That's easy:

1. Cannonball Run II (any film that combines the explosive talents of Tony Danza, Charles Nelson Reilly and Francis Albert Sinatra must be cherished).

2. Ernest Goes to Jail (the Masterpiece of the Jim Varney ouevre).

3. Roller Boogie (instead of spinning her head and projectile vomiting, Linda Blair gets to strap on the skates and boogie!).

4. The Big Bus (if you can choose only one nuclear-powered bus movie starring Stockard Channing, this is the one).

5. Soul Man (C. Thomas Howell in blackface . . . 'nuff said).

Posted by: Gene | March 30, 2007 12:15 PM

Mannequin -- I'll watch it any time it is on ... no matter how much of the movie I've missed.

Oh, and ANY Meg Ryan romantic comedy.

Posted by: Troylet | March 30, 2007 12:17 PM

The BBC's Pride and Prejudice (1995) - yes yes yes!!! I start watching any time I need a pick-me-up. It's like a drug.

Posted by: mel | March 30, 2007 12:18 PM

I have no idea what my list says about me and I'm a little bit afraid to find out. This is by no means complete but off the top of the dome.

Spaceballs
Tremors
Juice
Blazing Saddles
Finding Nemo
Cats vs. Dogs
Clue
Cloak and Dagger
Boondocks (Season 1, granted it's not a movie but it is so precious to me. Not a day goes by that I'm not using lines from it)
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (the dvd now has a crack in it)
Snatch
Face Off
The mummy and the mummy returns
The Goonies
Four Weddings and a Funeral
Love Actually
Underworld
Stargate
Airplane (it's just the best)
Old School ( I can't believe some of my friends don't get it)
Purple Rain
Sweet Home Alabama
Sliding Doors

Posted by: petal | March 30, 2007 12:20 PM

I stand corrected--Gene at 12:15 has provided a truly exemplary list of embarrassingly guilty pleasures. Love it!

Posted by: someone | March 30, 2007 12:21 PM

I agree w/ many of these choices, but my number one guilty pleasure is BABE. I've got a Howard Hughes thing going w/ it.

I also like funny horror/adventure movies like Shawn of the Dead and The Mummy. (And my entire Buffy collection, which doesn't count here.)

Spice World
Fifth Element (this is SUCH a good movie)

in spite of the fact that kevin costner is a truly wretched actor, i adore 'field of dreams' and generally require that my closest friends are also fans. i own both the video and dvd version and almost went out and bought the anniversary edition but my children stopped me.
i know it's maudlin and that it bears very little resemblance to the book on which it's based, "shoeless joe", but i love it. i love baseball. and i love the idea of the purity of the game. sigh. i'm going to watch it this weekend. thanks, liz. i needed that.

Posted by: methinks | March 30, 2007 12:30 PM

Only ones I didn't notice on all the other excellent lists are:

Mars Attacks
Howard the Duck
any Three Stooges movies
Shirley Temple movies, esp. Capt. January

but aren't some of those others (not these!) classics?

Posted by: flossie | March 30, 2007 12:31 PM

Oh and,

The good the bad and the ugly
Unforgiven

Both really good movies that I own and play over and over again. The thing is I don't like westerns.

Posted by: petal | March 30, 2007 12:31 PM

I was so happy to see Armageddon on someone else's list...I was getting increasingly embarrassed about it being #1 for me! Otherwise, I'm pretty traditional...

Armageddon
This is Spinal Tap
Blazing Saddles (I think I can quote the whole thing!)
The Mummy
Princess Bride
Legally Blonde

The last one caused me to learn something new about my boyfriend...it was on last weekend (I used the "background noise" excuse), as we were making dinner. During the big Elle questions Chutney scene, he blurted out "You can't wash your hair the day you get a perm!!!" I just looked at him and blinked...couldn't think of anything to say. He immediately turned bright red, mumbled "you don't want to know" and refused to say anything else. I think I know what I'll be asking his mom the next time we see her!!

This is funny since there really ARE movies that never get old!

Moulin Rouge
Goodfellas
Dumb and Dumber
Pretty Woman
Dirty Dancing
Rocky IV

Haha I never said I had good cinematic taste...

Posted by: not bluto | March 30, 2007 12:45 PM

here is my really diverse list:

-Love Actually (even my tough-guy hubby can look at this one over and over)
-Player's Club (kind of sexist and filled w/some pretty bad acting but a super funny Bernie Mac will make me look at this again and again)
-Wedding Crashers (also sexist but can't get enough of the Will Ferrel cameo)
-The 40 year old virgin (sweet fun stuff)
-Fatal Attraction (scaarrry good)
-Breakfast at Tiffany's (filled w/funny and shifty characters except for Mickey Rooney's unfunny caricature of Japanese man)
-Rear Window (often looked at this Hitchcock fav w/my late grandma)

Deep Blue.

Sam Jackson is giving his stirring peptalk, "now we're going to get it together and......." Shark jumps out of the water chomps onto his waist slams him to the floor and pulls him into the water. You had me at hello Deep Blue, you had me at hello.

I second So I married an axe murderer. "Harriet sweet Harriet, you acted cucu cause you thought I would leave you arhara" and a lot of the others.

Kknd of long, but here it is:

Bachelor Party ("pain is such a rush")
Darby O'Gill and the Little People (one of Sean Connery's first films)
Animal House
Dirty Dancing
The Cutting Edge (what IS it about this movie??)
The Fifth Element
The Neverending Story
Flashdance
Princess Bride ("inconceivable!")
Sixteen Candles
Rat Race

Posted by: MBJ | March 30, 2007 12:52 PM

Some of these films, like La Haine and Amelie, are great and easily watchable multiple times, but I wouldn't say they fall into the "guilty pleasure" category. Not like, say, all three of the Back to the Future movies. Watched in order on a perfectly good Saturday afternoon.

Posted by: | March 30, 2007 12:55 PM

You're, Mine and Ours - Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda are hilarious. I DVR it every time I can find it on Cable.

I completely forgot about "Lake Placid"! Such a fantastic bad movie. Brendan Gleeson and Oliver Platt look like they realize how craptastic the movie is and camp it up while Bill Pullman and Bridget Fonda are hoping for Oscars for their performances. Plus, Betty White with a potty mouth!

Any one of a number of MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 dvds: MANOS HANDS OF FATE (which contains the immortal line "Every frame of this movie looks like someone's last known photograph") or SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS or MITCHELL.

RED GREEN: DUCT TAPE FOREVER. Perhaps one of the stupidest movies ever made... stupid-funny, like the TV show, but in a Hollywood way, which means it's dumb-stupid-funny.

And, if I owned it on DVD, another one would be STRANGE BREW (another Canadian flick) starring Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas as Bob and Doug McKenzie.

I hate to admit it but I've spent perfectly good Saturdays watching Rocky I, II, III, and the first hour or so of IV (up until Apollo dies); refuse to watch V because there has to be a limit to this madness. I just love these movies and they are ALWAYS on tv somewhere and I ALWAYS have to watch them.

Posted by: KD | March 30, 2007 1:18 PM

The only videos my toddler and I can stand to watch over and over again are the HBO Classical Babys. I like them because they don't try to teach anything. Other videos are SO repetitive with their earnest recitations of the alphabet, letters, shapes and colors.

I agree with IndyAnna - A lot of these are not guilty pleasure movies at all, but are just really good movies. For example, "The Shawshank Redemption" and "Goodfellas" are terrific movies, nowhere near being guilty pleasures.

To be considered at all for the appellation "guilty pleasure", a movie should have been decimated by the critics. Completely tanking at the box office helps, too. The old 1966 "Batman" mentioned above is a great example. For guys, I think we get a pass on a good, popular movie if it's too much of a "chick flick". Anything with Shirley MacLaine could qualify as a guilty pleasure for a guy.

For me, "Joe versus the Volcano" is my guilty pleasure. It has it all--critics hated it like cancer, it did as well at the box office as an art-house foreign language documentary, and it gives off a strong whiff of chickflickness. But I always stop to watch it if its on TV. That scene with the luggage store guy KILLS me!

Blow-Up (David Hemmings in a movie all about swingin' 60s style, with almost no plot to distract from the modness)
The Best of Everything (Dated and sudsy, secretaries at work and play face the challenges and temptations of a big, bad office working for big, bad Joan Crawford)
Cabin Boy (fishstick kitties and the demented genius of Chris Elliot)
Carnival of Souls (bad acting, yet still creepy--great!)
The Great Rock'N" Roll Swindle (a colorful, noisy compilation of footage of and mythology on the overrated but endlessly interesting Sex Pistols.)
The Knack and How to Get It (Richard Lester zanily directing, not the Beatles, but Rita Tushingham and Michael "The Phantom" Crawford)
The Magic Christian (satire with Ringo Starr and Peter Sellers, tons of cameos, and music by Badfinger.)
Thunderbird 6 (Gerry Anderson's Supermarionettes on the big screen, with Lady Penelope, coolest spy-puppet ever)
Times Square (all of these lists should include a Tim Curry film; great soundtrack, improbable plot, but a great glimpse of New York as it never was and never will be again, circa 1980.)

3) Does anyone remember that made-for-TV Disney movie "The Color of Friendship" about that white South African girl? My sister and I watched that EVERY TIME it came on TV.

4) My Neighbor Totoro. If I'm having a bad day all I need to do is watch the bus stop scene and pretty soon I'm laughing so hard I'm crying.

Of course, as they point out on MST3K, MANOS HANDS OF FATE translates into "Hands, Hands Of Fate."

"You forgot your complementary crazy bread!"

I was thinking, after I posted, that seeing an awful, embarrassing movie get the MST3K treatment assuages the guilt inherent in those guilty pleasures somewhat. The movies they treated may still suck, but at least on MST3K they're good for a laugh.

Posted by: Max | March 30, 2007 2:49 PM

I could watch DUCK SOUP or BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID or THE GRADUATE over and over again, but I wouldn't call them "guilty pleasures."

I confess i watch the animated Mickey Mouse rendition of A Christmas Carol every Xmas.

Posted by: jules | March 30, 2007 3:15 PM

Some Like it Hot is a fine movie. So is the Princess Bride.
I thought guilty pleasures were supposed to be crappy movies.

Posted by: Y'all are a bunch of snobs! | March 30, 2007 3:17 PM

Coal Miner's Daughter with Sissy Spacek.

Very guilty pleasure as I'm a straight man who hates country music. But Sissy's accent and singing make me watch every time it's on. I receive mucho teasing from my wife on this one.

Posted by: Xopher G. | March 30, 2007 3:30 PM

First off..."So I married an Axe-Murderer" really is my favorite movie--it was also a "test" for past boyfriends--could they watch it with me IN THE PROPER SPIRIT? [My husband is Scottish, so obviously he passed] C'mon now, "IF you want my body, AND you think I'm sexy, C'MON baby let me know?"

My guilty pleasures:
The Cutting Edge
Robin Hood [with Kevin Costner]
Karate Kid
And...Little House on the Prairie, all seasons of which I now have on dvd, thanks to aforementioned spouse!

what about the ones you revered and then see again and realize are not good? I loved the Princess Bride. I saw it again recently and was so turned off by the sexism, it just wasn't good. (how many scenes of helpless "save me, Wesley" do we need to see?). And no, I am not an overly-sensitive twit. I just wish I hadn't seen it again because then I could remember it untainted. The Bond movies were the same way (one reason the latest one was such a joy). And yes, I know I will be flamed for this.

Posted by: Lily | March 30, 2007 3:56 PM

Guilty Pleasure Movies:
(not favorites... but something i can watch again and again without it growing old)

difficult...

Dead Men Dont Wear Plaid ('what is this foc')
Elf (zooey deschanel singing stops me cold)
Hackers (because a young nerdy angelina jolie is really not something one can turn off)
A Nightmare before Christmas

none 'favorites', like best in show or the lotr flicks... but i hate so much film the ones i'll watch tend more to 'favorites' for me than for most i suppose...

Posted by: Quintilius Varus | March 30, 2007 3:58 PM

and, for the record, to show I am not a humorless prune, I agree with a lot of the other ones on people's lists. The whole Spinal Tap/Guffman/Best in show series is definitely up there. And I am inspired to rent a lot of these now to re-see them...(I'll bet Love, Actually is checked out of a lot of stores tonight)

I also love several other movies mentioned (eg "The Princess Bride" and "A Fish Called Wanda"), but I don't feel particularly guilty about them.

Oh, and this is technically a TV show, not a movie, but I've still seen it about 3,000 times, and will watch it approximately 30 times a year:

"How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

That, by the way, would be the classic Dr. Seuss/Chuck Jones cartoon special. Not the abomination Jim Carrey live-action debacle.

(getting worked up)

Liz, I think you need a separate list:

"Movies That You Really Looked Forward to Seeing But Thought Were Really Bad Once You Did."

My vote for the top of that list by far? "Austin Powers" -- 4 or 5 ten-second-hilarious scenes in between twenty-minute borefests of fart jokes, bad writing, camera mugging, and just painful acting.

I lost all respect for Mike Myers and haven't seen a thing he's done since.

After that, the "Bad Sequels" list (someone already mentioned the how-did-it-get-made "Meet the Fockers")

Posted by: TD | March 30, 2007 5:16 PM

I also really really like the bollywood film: Kabhie Kushi Kabhie Gham

Dave - Kevin Kline (sigh)
A fish called Wanda (a different version of KK!)
Bringing up Baby (Cary Grant!)
Apollo 13
The Front Page (Rosalind Russell version) (more CG)
Philadelphia Story (more CG)
Casablanca (probably not a guilty pleasure since so good)
The Fabulous Baker Boys (Jeff Bridges!)

Innerspace - Dennis Quaid, Meg Ryan and Martin Short

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes

Mel Brooks' Silent Movie - one word spoken in the entire film...by Marcel Marceau

Humanoids from the Deep - more boobs and gore than you can imagine

Invasion of the Body Snatchers - either version

King of Hearts
Lord of the Rings---any one of the trilogy but The Two Towers was my fave
To Have and Have Not
Life of Brian
My Fair Lady
Bread and Chocolate
any 007 movie with any Bond
Amarcord
and for cuteness, the movie about those two college guys going to White Castle :--D

Posted by: CVM | March 30, 2007 6:02 PM

Definitely some generational differences here. Didn't see one single "Rocky Horror Picture Show" .... A classic!!! And How about "Lust in the Dust" with Divine!!!!
Blazing Saddles - definitely - lots of yiddish in there that almost no one understands. Always good to have a second language for Mel Brooks movies!
Something about Mary????? The scene where the dog flies out of the window accidentally... and Mary with the sperm on her hair that she thinks is hair gel???
My favorite movie to restore my faith in humanity: "A Town Called Alice" - it's an Aussie film based on Neville Chute's book "The Legacy". Keep it around for when I feel dark.

Ryan O'Neil and Barbra Streisand -- it is a classic period piece and has humor all over the place! You have to watch it 10 times or more to catch all the jokes.

To Kokomo(?): "The movie with Jane Wyman & Rock Hudson." Do you mean the one where she goes blind? Magnificent Obsession. Or the one where he's the gardener and she's an older woman? All That Heaven Allows. And I'd probably add both of them to my list, too.
