Happy Birthday to Suri

Birthday girl Suri Cruise. (Reuters)

As Little Suri Cruise celebrates her first human birthday today, we pause to wish her well and reflect back on a idyllic era for stargazers -- when tabloid breathlessness, a cultish religion and superstardom flowed like so much manna into a perfect melange of celebrity sensationalism.

Was it only a year ago that we were agog at rumors of silent births, adult pacifiers and the confinement of Katie Holmes? Remember the months-long wait for the first pictures that had us questioning Suri's very existence? And do you remember where you were when you first gazed upon the stylishly-coiffed visage of the hirsute pixie? (Okay, me either.)

No word yet on how the Cruise brood plans to celebrate Suri's big day, but festivities will likely take place in Louisiana where Holmes is filming "Mad Money" when not calling the cops. A quick spin around the Web didn't reveal any Scientology-based birthday traditions, except for the "Birthday Game" (scroll down) -- played annually on L. Ron Hubbard's birthday (March 13) and apparently won by accruing points. ("Points are won by having certain stats in the org in a condition of Normal or above.") Indeed.

P.S. Happy birthday to little Grier Henchy, born the same day in the same hospital to former Cruise nemesis Brooke Shields.

Is it wrong that I laughed way too hard when Brooke Shields, responding to Cruise's inane comments about anti-depressents, offered to leave tickets at the office for her London play for "Cruise and his daughter?"

"first human birthday"

Well done.

I simply can't believe that Katie was shopping for clothes at Target.
Maybe she called the police so we'd all take note of her new penny-pinching ways.

It's eerie how much she looks like both parents.

Here's hoping she gets more than a spoon, a cat or what the heck else those wacky Scientols give for birthdays. It would suck if her celebration involved getting L. Ron the 5x stars he wanted.

Barb - my thoughts exactly - Katie Holmes shops for clothes at Target?!?!?

Maybe Katie and Tom realized dressing her in Armani everyday really wasn't all that practical considering the mess most babies make of themselves multiple times per day. (though I thought Tom made somewhere in the neighborhood of $100mil last year so it's not like it was a huge budget strain...) What protection did the police offer her that her "handlers" and body guards could not? Nice to see those police have nothing better to do in Shreveport, La.

Her parents may have a bizarre relationship, but Suri sure is cute!

Posted by: Noelle | April 18, 2007 12:42 PM

Does anyone else think she looks like Tom's cousin? The one who is/was on lost?

Posted by: Irish girl | April 18, 2007 12:48 PM

Maybe shopping at Target was all a publicity stunt so Katie can make us feel like she is just like us (APPEAL TO THE MASSES!!).
Katie is in all this for the publicity and money as is her husband. I don't buy the sweet innocent act. Remember, she is an actress!!
Right now, Suri is the moneymaker.
Keep the pics to a minimum and we will spend more money to see them. Thus, Katie and Tom make more money.

Target is the discount store for fashonitas. Barney's on the high end and Target on the low end.

Grier is cuter. Good for Brooke. So nice to see her happy.

Posted by: Barb | April 18, 2007 1:51 PM

shouldn't a good akron girl be shopping at walmart, not target?

Posted by: | April 18, 2007 1:59 PM

Not that I'm normally one to defend Katie Holmes, but maybe Target was all that was convenient and she needed some retail therapy.

Another kudos to Liz for "first human birthday" ... love it!

It's been said before and will no doubt be said again, but Suri still looks Asian to me.

Irish Girl - Totally agree! Everytime I saw "Ethan" (William Mapother)on LOST I felt like I was looking at Suri all grown up (and male).

Posted by: Alex | April 18, 2007 4:03 PM

I guess I was implying he was the sperm donor. I mean didn't Tom say he was sterile?

Posted by: Irish girl | April 18, 2007 4:49 PM

Suri so looks like Chris Klein.

Posted by: JRS | April 18, 2007 5:12 PM

JRS, I thought the exact same thing: OMG, she is the spitting image of her father, Chris Klein.

Posted by: only1kcm | April 19, 2007 3:20 PM

I feel sorry for Suri. Poor thing has a self-centered egomaniac for a father and a space cadet for a mother.
