Comment Box: Kirk Cameron on 'Nightline'?

Kirk Cameron, not one to be left behind in the debate of God's existence. (AP)
Kirk Cameron on "Nightline" what? I had such a thing for him back in the day and now he just creeps me out. -- Submitted during last week's Celebritology Live discussion
That's right, the actor who earned his berth in our pop culture lexicon by playing the son of Alan Thicke on super-sappy '80s sitcom "Growing Pains" (watch online) is all grown-up: The "atheist turned follower of Christ" and father of six plays a starring role in the "Left Behind" series of evangelical movies and produces and co-hosts "The Way of the Master" -- a reality TV show aimed at "saving" as many people as possible by inspiring Christians to "reach out to the lost."
Last Wednesday, Cameron and "Way of the Master" co-host Ray Comfort appeared on Nightline to "face-off" against two atheists to debate the existence of God. Who won? Watch the entire mind-numbing broadcast (moderated by Martin Bashir, who you may remember from previous responsible documentary news events, like his 2003 Fox interview with Michael Jackson) over at ABC.com or get the highlights from this handy Slate review. For more fun, spend a few minutes on this entertaining critique from the Christian Post, which compliments Cameron's "likable, articulate persona" as "almost Reaganesque."
I read that Prince Philip made inquiries while at Goddard about how astronauts take care of ... I think the phrase was something like "natural functions" while in a flight suit. All I could think was that Fleet Street had really let Britain down on this one. I mean, everyone in America knows the answer to this question, thanks to a certain love-sick astronaut in a wig. How could Prince Philip have missed this important fact? -- Submitted during last week's Celebritology Live chat
Indeed, according to several semi-credible Internet sources, Prince Philip did ask British astronaut Piers Sellers about how he dealt with the call of nature while on a space walk. London's Evening Standard carried their conversation, supposedly verbatim:
Philip seemed fascinated with the space walks and asked Sellers, "What do you do about natural functions?"
Sellers told him he wore an adult nappy -- but waited until he was back inside the space station.
Later he said, "It was a good question to ask. I told him that I would wait for ten hours and then once back inside get someone to help me off with the suit and rush to the bathroom."
While some used the exchange to observe that Prince Philip is not, in fact, smarter than a fifth grader, the BBC took the royal's question seriously and posted this highly technical explanation of zero gravity bathroom behavior:
"The unisex toilet resembles a conventional loo, but with straps over the feet and bars over the thighs to make sure that the astronauts don't drift off mid-go."
I hate when that happens.

Maybe the Prince was asking how the space guys went about rubbing one out?

It's always nice to see Kirk Cameron continue his epic quest to make America dumber.

That Slate review is excellent! Thanks.

Oh Mike may have been my very first crush but that clip was all kinds of crazy. Isnt he still married to his girlfriend from the show too?
Posted by: i <3 Mike | May 14, 2007 2:04 PM
Yes, Kirk Cameron is an idiot. He is married to the same woman for umpteen years. He has managed to have six kids, some of whom are adopted, I believe, without the tabloids noticing. And he has never been to rehab. Oh my, how terrible.

So he is a little overzealous, but you know he is allowed to believe what he wants.

What bothers me about the Kirk Camerons of the world is their endorsement of the sadistic version of Christianity advocated by "Left Behind."
The theology behind these books and films seems to be that the ultimate reward for being a Believer is seing those who mocked your faith suffer horrible pain.

My main problem with Cameron is that he insisted that Mike Seaver grow up and stop being such a goof-off on his show, that made the final years of Growing Pains much more boring, plus he got the former playboy playmate who played his fiancee booted off of the show.

I realize this is off topic for Celebritology but I saw that some educators aren't in favor of spelling bees. I for one loved spelling bees, in part because I was good at them, but mostly because it was fun.
And just so no one gets PO'd because I didn't post about entertainment, I never watched a single episode of "Growing Pains" and for that am supremely grateful.

Wow, sad on so many levels. What is the point to a spelling bee anyway? Other than some National contest in DC. No one cares when you apply to colleges!
Amazing how both Cameron's have done well without drugs, being stupid (ala LL, PH, BS, etc.), and the tabloids. Some of their former co-stars could learn a few things!! Esp. the Full House clan!

I have a ferret named Widget, so every time you post about the Celebritology Widget, I just have this mental image of my tiny girl typing away at the keyboard, dooking and chuckling at the foibles of the rich and famous. It makes me laugh.
RE: The Christian vs. Atheist debate.... I saw the whole mind-numbing thing. The Christian's points were laughable and they quickly broke their own rules about using the Bible but at least they presented them well. The atheists made good points, but needed lessons in public speaking. All in all, it was a horrible waste of time for something fundamentally unprovable anyway. I never saw a problem with just taking things on faith (or not) and letting others do the same as they choose.

I know for a fact that he WAS in rehab about 2 years ago (from someone who works at the facility)... the only reason nobody heard was because nobody cares!!
