Victoria Beckham's 'Major' Debut

Victoria Beckham, ready for her California close-up. (AP)
The Victoria Beckham (aka Posh Spice) who asks earthquake specialists if her knickers are showing and half-seriously says "Let me get myself miserable before we go out" is way more likeable than the actual miserable specimen we Yanks have been spoonfed for the past several years courtesy of tabloid pics in which she poses like a severe mannequin at the side of husband David Beckham.
As it turns out, Posh may have been England's best kept secret. After last night's airing of NBC's "Victoria Beckham: Coming to America" special, though, the cat is out of the Prada bag and smoking hot in skintight fuschia spandex, baby -- ready to laugh at her own lame Lionel Richie jokes and unapologetically call Eddie Murphy a naughty censor-worthy name on primetime network TV. She's over the top, sassy and manages to simultaneously poke fun at herself and us for watching without making us feel like dolts who have no better way to pass a Monday night than gawking at celebrities as they go about living life (albeit a made-for-TV facsimile of life).
Our homegrown reality TV poster girls -- "Simple Life"-ers Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie -- seem downright boring compared to perky Posh. Where Paris and Nicole languidly whine their way through ridiculously contrived chores almost defying us to keep watching as they rake dollar after dollar into their legal defense funds, Posh is alive and doing shots with the surgically-enhanced Beverly Hills AARP welcome wagon or confronting blogger Perez Hilton.
Even Posh's asides pack a punch. "It's exhausting being fabulous," she says after an impromptu balcony dance while house hunting. "It looked like someone with no taste had come in and thrown up everywhere," she said describing one home. And, where Paris has "hot" Posh has "major." A drunken Beverly Hills' trophy wife doing her impression of a dolphin is "major," as are six-inch pumps and most other things that amuse Mrs. Beckham.
I'm only sorry that this major debut was limited to one episode.
Did you watch? If so, what'd you think of Posh's stateside debut?

Totally agree, I thoroughly enjoyed the show and didn't expect to. I laughed out loud several times - she's a real hoot! Why wasn't this kept as a series??
Posted by: VA | July 17, 2007 11:03 AM
Are you serious? Did we watch the same program? I would not credit this lady with enough intelligence to "simultaneously poke fun at herself and us for watching without making us feel like dolts who have no better way to pass a Monday night... "
She's an idiot and I am so glad to know that NBC have realised this, too and will not be running this show as a series, as originally planned.
Posted by: Annie | July 17, 2007 11:05 AM
Well I hadn't planned on watching but now I'm bummed I missed it. Thanks alot, Liz. :)

It was great! She was fresh and funny, and I was entertained despite myself. Although as my husband remarked as he was passing through the den (during the unfortunate AARP convention), "Wow - you know we're in trouble when Victoria Beckham is classier than any of the Americans in the room."
I can see why the Brits hate her, though - she's much too flamboyant and boisterous for them. Her sense of humor is a blend of silly and sarcastic, and while that's perfect for a stateside audience, it's deadly when you're in the UK. So I can see why we would like her much more than they would.

Okay, I'll admit it. I had nothing to do Monday night so I watch Posh being absolutely fabulous
If you going to spend an afternoon shopping, Posh is the person to take with you.
Posted by: Lisa1 | July 17, 2007 11:19 AM
Am I the only one not surprised? Every quote from her ever printed has shown a dry, self-deprecating wit.
Posted by: Other Liz | July 17, 2007 11:23 AM
I'm def. feeling like I missed out. Any chance I can catch it on YouTube!?
Posted by: aww man | July 17, 2007 11:23 AM
I was born and bred in this here U S of A, but nothing is more refreshing than a British sense of humour. Anyone that did not get the fact that Posh was making fun of her "image" probably hated the show! ...but for those of us in the know, it is obvious that Victoria may enjoy the celebrity lifestyle but doesn't take it all that seriously. Loved the show, and loved her interviews with Jay Leno and Matt Lauer.
I still think that the LA Galaxy could have made a better purchase than Becks...but that is the hardcore football...oops i mean soccer fan... speaking.
Posted by: That is MAJOR | July 17, 2007 11:29 AM
I saw her show last night and i found it funny and entertaining. She has a good screen presence and she is very natural.
Unlike the reality shows of the tabloid queens here in America, whose reality shows
are very unreal and scripted, Posh just go about her activities as if no camera is following her. When it's over, i can't help but wish for more...
Posted by: Ernie L | July 17, 2007 11:36 AM
while i don't plan to appropriate the catchphrase "that's major!" i will admit that despite the many, many snarky comments i've made about her, victoria posh spice beckham is about as real and self deprecating a person that's been on tv in a long time.
i still wish she would smile and would def. like to know how she gets her skin to look like that? honestly...self tanner???
Posted by: methinks | July 17, 2007 11:37 AM
I only caught the last half - and believe me , I was horrified to discover how much I liked her. I was sure all this calculated coverage would blow up in their faces - but they sucked me in. Arrgh.
Those socialites - OMG. They gave me pains - she did an awesome job being nice about the whole thing. I'm sure off camera she was horrified. Although getting tanked must have helped IMMENSELY.

I had a low opinion of Posh going in, and only saw half of the show, but I really thought she was a hoot.
Posted by: surprised too | July 17, 2007 11:48 AM
I liked the show. I didn't realize how hot she is. Great breasts, even if they are fakies!
Posted by: Jaime | July 17, 2007 11:49 AM
Happened on the show while flippin' thru the channels last night and stayed long enough to watch the DMV segment. I cracked up over the drivers license photo shoot; wish her entourage had been with me at Ritz Camera when I had my new passport photo made a couple of weeks ago... Nevertheless, I didn't hang around for more once they went to commercial.
Posted by: Anonymous | July 17, 2007 11:59 AM
liz, do you suppose you could score either a one on one interview or snag ms.vicposhspicebeckham for a celebrity online chat? that could be very major indeed.
Posted by: methinks | July 17, 2007 12:00 PM
I too had the same misconceptions about "Posh" but I have to say, I totally love her now! So much better than the annoyingly fake and wannabe celebrities like Paris and Tara Reid. Its obvious she has class, but also a very witty sense of humor and perfect comedic timing!
Posted by: Anonymous | July 17, 2007 12:07 PM
I didn't watch the special, but I have had a favorable opinion of Victoria Beckham ever since I saw the YouTube video of her being interviewed by "Little Ant and Dec" where she takes two boys toy shopping. She was hilarious and surprisingly warm (given the tabloid treatment she gets). Hey, if she's laughing all the way to the bank, good for her.
Posted by: TD | July 17, 2007 12:10 PM
I'd been planning to watch the show, and wasn't disappointed. She was refreshing and funny. If they did a series, how "real" would it keep being? Did anyone watch the Osbournes? (sp?) I didn't, so I don't know how "real" that was. The family life of Dr Rey on that plastic surgery show "Dr 90210" seems to retain its "reality". Maybe Victoria B. could pull it off. I'd watch it.
Posted by: gg | July 17, 2007 12:23 PM
Oh i totally forgot that was last night. is it ever going to be shown again? can I get it on demand?
Posted by: Anonymous | July 17, 2007 12:31 PM
Who knew Victoria Beckham is so funny? I loved the scene at the DMV, and the part where she is invited to lunch with those hideous Beverly Hills "socialites." These ladies had so much plastic surgery; their faces were pulled so tightly the eyes and cheekbones appeared feline. Gross.
Posted by: Anonymous | July 17, 2007 12:40 PM
I didn't watch (not a Spice Girls fan in general) but I won't say I'm surprised that she seems both real and funny.
Victoria Beckham has carefully managed her image for years. That takes someone with brains - and with the state of British tabloids combined with the popularity of both herself and her husband - a sense of humor.
Not to mention that she apparently manages her money well and seems to have the sense to keep her kids out of the limelight as much as she possibly can (not sure how much or if they appeared last night).
She may be a bit extreme in her fashion (both her figure and her clothes - definitely not a fan of her skeletal look as she was actually pretty during her Spice Girls days), but that doesn't mean she's a brainless debutante. It just means she's cultivated an image.
Posted by: Chasmosaur | July 17, 2007 12:48 PM
I missed the beginning of the show, and am regretting it!! It was great. Anyone who lets a camera crew come with her to the DMV while trying to get a driver's license must have a great sense of humor.
Do you know if NBC plans to re-air the show?
Posted by: Arlington | July 17, 2007 12:50 PM
I really had no plans to watch, but I stopped on it while surfing and loved it! It was hilarious!
Posted by: Sara | July 17, 2007 12:51 PM
My wife was flipping back and forth between watching Alton Brown on FoodTV and watching Posh on NBC. I totally forgot to check to see if Posh was on NBC HD.
I'm thankful NBC didn't commit to an entire season, but I wonder what it would have been like. Somewhere between "The Surreal Life" and "The Osbornes?" ...has everyone tired of reality TV yet? Can I have my scripted TV shows back yet? :)
Posted by: Ken | July 17, 2007 12:51 PM
I am totally entranced by her now. I didn't even intend to watch but I was at the gym, and by the time the episode was over I found her beyond fierce. I mean, she has the gonads to walk up to Perez Hilton and handle his idiocy and pompousness with complete and total class. And the blow-up doll incident was priceless! Love that girl- let's make sure we send LiLo to London and keep Victoria Beckham here!
Posted by: Mason Patriot | July 17, 2007 1:08 PM
I told myself I was not going to watch this but I just kept flipping back to it because I found it to be quite funny. I loved the scene in the DMV...she came back with some quick wit to the DMV guy giving the test. I like the fact that she actually does have a humorous side to her, as we all thought she was a stiff. Unfortunately, it was only a one episode show and I wish there were more

After growing tired of our US celebs, Victoria Beckham is a breath of fresh air - what an absolutely fabulous debut! Left me hoping for more.
Posted by: Anonymous | July 17, 2007 1:19 PM
She is fun and fabulous as some of my friends would say- She actually has a brain and know's how to have fun without a drink and drugs-
Paris and Nicole and Lindsey should be forced to look at this show as part of their rehab. She looks great- remember she has three young kids, and knows how to make fun of herself.

I take back every snarky thing I ever said about Posh. I happened upon the show last night and loved it. Who knew she was so funny and intelligent. I like her classy approach to the socialites when it came to the money discussion. Why did one of them look like a drag queen?
Oh and when she asked about the cost of the house ahead of time because there's a regular price and a price for Beckham. She was funny. Darn it I now like her! Darn it!
Posted by: petal | July 17, 2007 3:07 PM
And don't forget the very amusing Da Ali G show episodes that someone (Liz?) referred us to earlier... On you-tube?
Posted by: Bogota | July 17, 2007 3:09 PM
I expected it hate her and the show. But, no-- the woman is hilarious! I, too, in so sad that it was only one-hour. I loved the part where, while lounging next to the pools, she quips, "This is like what Paris Hilton does all day." Such a dry humor. Love it.
Welcome to America, indeed.
Posted by: KJ | July 17, 2007 3:28 PM
I watched and VHS taped! Yes, she's as fresh as my VCR is dated. Finally a celebrity with brains, beauty, and familial concern. No wonder Mr. Bexxxs was so attracted to her.
Posted by: jared | July 17, 2007 3:30 PM
well, I'm not a soccer fan, I'm not a Spice Girls fan. I probably couldn't have picked her out of a lineup before last night. I hadn't even watched TV in weeks but last night I found myself tired and just wanting to zone out to the Nats game. Somehow flipping the channels I turned on the show, I can't even stand reality shows. But she was very amusing. I only watched bits and pieces of it and eventually bailed and went to play guitar... but... if she had her own show. I might watch it. I might have to watch the re-run of it cause I missed the parts everyone here was talking about. I saw the scene where she was dressing up the doll to fake out the media so she could go buy a surprise gift for her husband.

Victoria Beckham show ripped, barely watched
LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Victoria Beckham's bid to woo Americans has backfired with damning reviews of a reality TV show that she hoped would overturn her image here as a sour-faced diva.
The New York Post called Monday night's show "an orgy of self-indulgence" and described Beckham as "vapid and condescending."
Beckham, 33, wife of British soccer legend David Beckham, arrived in Los Angeles last week in a media blitz promoting the couple as style icons and mega-celebrities both on and off the soccer field.
David Beckham has signed a $250 million contract over five years with the Los Angeles Galaxy soccer team.
Victoria Beckham, Posh in the 1990s British girl band The Spice Girls, had hoped Monday's prime-time reality special "Victoria Beckham: Coming to America" would showcase her humor and personality to a nation which has heard much but knows little of her outside pictures.
"I think people will really get to see what I'm really like. I'm just a normal girl from London. People can have preconceptions because of the photographs they see of me and the stories they read," she told reporters last week.
Alessandra Stanley in The New York Times said that such reality shows "rely on a fish-out-of-water conceit but in Beverly Hills she is a fish-in-Evian, one rich, blonde, spray tanned wife-of among many."
Viewing figures released Tuesday showed that the NBC program documenting Beckham's house-hunting, attempts to get a U.S. driving license and lessons on surviving an earthquake was the third-most watched show in its time slot Monday.
Some 4.9 million people tuned in, but more watched repeats of ABC's "Wife Swap" and two CBS sitcoms.
"Beckham, who is bizarrely constantly posing even in her own home, offers insights about how major a certain purse is or how her new phone has changed her life," Linda Stasi wrote in The New York Post.
Gail Pennington of the St Louis Post-Dispatch wrote: "To the Brits, they are Posh and Becks. To most Americans they're -- who?"
Beckham, who plans to push her jeans, sunglasses and perfume lines in the United States, said last week she hoped Americans would appreciate her dry, British sense of humor.
"If people like it, that's great. If they don't, I'm not losing any sleep over it," she said of the TV special.

I turned the show on out of morbid curiousity and found myself chuckling throughout the whole thing. Seriously though, those socialites were scary!!
Posted by: ASinMoCo | July 17, 2007 3:54 PM
Not surprised at all. I'm pretty sure you can go back through all my past comments and find nothing but praise for my Poshy.
Posted by: OD | July 17, 2007 3:58 PM
Wow. Now I'm kind of sorry I missed it.
Posted by: h3 | July 17, 2007 4:14 PM
Well, if Alessandra Stanley didn't like it,now I have to watch it!
Posted by: phan | July 17, 2007 4:35 PM
Absolutely brilliant! Victoria is something that's been way over due on American TV especially after all the drivel we've had from the Lindsays, Nicoles, Britneys and Paris!
Posted by: Ryan | July 17, 2007 4:37 PM
How could anyone not enjoy Posh? Whoever wrote that article has issues and needs a sense of humor. Did they see when she went to Perez Hilton? The exchange between them was funny it was good tv.
The socialites were a complete horror thorough. If that's what a BH socialite looks like, yikes! Somebody stop that woman from doing her dolphin calls and what was with the decor, tons of money clearly does not equal taste.
Posted by: carmen | July 17, 2007 4:37 PM
I only caught snippets of the show as it was on in the background whilst I was working (obviously watched long enough to be inspired to start incorporating "whilst" into my daily vocab, haha). But I must have missed the intelligent and self-depricating side so many of you seemed to have caught. I found her to be a bit overly conceited, above-it-all and hung up on the unimportant. Like when she was pulled over and was embarassed to be photo-ed in flats.
But maybe I missed too much with just the snippets I saw - so perhaps I'll try to catch the rerun.
The part at the DMV was hilarious, however, when they asked for her signature and she said, "who should I make it out to? (pause) oh, you just need me to sign."
Posted by: unsure as of yet | July 17, 2007 5:09 PM
i actually tried to email nbc to say i loved the show -- how can you even compare it to the other drivel passing off as entertainment tv??? posh is just laugh out loud funny. how about when the dmv guy asked her to "sign here" and she said "do you want me to make it out to anybody special?" HILARIOUS. somebody tell those morons at nbc that they have a winner and don't even know it.

Wow! That first paragraph may include the longest run-on sentence I've ever read in the Post. Nice work!

I just finished watching the episode on NBC.com. I really enjoyed the show and laughed out loud several times ("so lionel richie laid the parkay flooring...whilst he was dancing on the ceiling"). I hate to say it, she's much more attractive that I originally thought (maybe it's because all the photos I see of her are whilst she's out and about on the town after making herself miserable).
Posted by: E | July 18, 2007 8:54 AM
I love her, shes my new favorite celebrity. Shes awesome and I think people that havent seen other items that she has been involved in (youtube Being Victoria Beckham) probably took many of the silly things she said as her personality. She really is very down to earth and loves to joke. and her husband and her are so in love, its adorable to watch!!

"Wow! That first paragraph may include the longest run-on sentence I've ever read in the Post. Nice work!

Two things. First: it's not a run-on sentence, it's just really long. Show me an inappropriate use of conjunctions in that sentence. Second, it's not *in* the Post. It's in a blog on the Post website. If you haven't noticed there's a big difference by now, you're not paying very close attention.
Posted by: h3 | July 18, 2007 11:37 AM
i thought it was good too! i was surprised - i loved to watch her learn american...or should i say california. the socialites were out of control...but she held her own. too bad they are canceling the show...she is much more interesting that the paris/nicole/lindsay foolishness that is all over the silly media.
Posted by: r2a | July 18, 2007 12:57 PM
Ok. I'll admit that I watched to see what a bore she is. She was FABULOUS! Too funny. And quite down to earth (well, as much as possible in her position). I thought she was adorable. And I loved the "socialite luncheon". They all looked like drag queens. She can wear any kind of shoes she wants--I think she's refreshing.
Posted by: Lisa | July 18, 2007 3:48 PM
OMG! Loved this show. I was so disappointed that it isn't going to be a series. I would TiVo it every week religiously. I completely agree that she is entertaining and very interesting.
What can we do to get her on TV regularly!!??
Posted by: Crystal | July 18, 2007 5:25 PM
I saw it too. I have repeated the story of her concern about loseing the game for the Dodgers if she threw out the first ball and didnt do it right. Too funny. Can't wait for the next one.

Pathetic. I can't believe people are praising this show.

I was sorry after reading your blog that I had missed the show on Monday. I really only wanted to watch it to see if she actually had teeth if she smiled! I was switching channels last night and it was on again. I hated her before. I love her now. I think she is too funny. Sure, she is rich and famous, and enjoys it. I'm toally jealous. But, she knows who and what she is and makes fun of herself. She was refreshing. I have "majorly" changed my mind about her. I'd watch more of her on T.V.
Posted by: funnygirl0301 | July 20, 2007 11:28 AM
I thought she was a stupid, skinny, wealthy brit and had absolutely NO interest in her or her show. Didn't even know there was a show until last night as I was flipping through the channels. My husband was mortified that I would stop on her show. She was hilarious. I was so surprised! I actually liked her and having a sarcastic, cheeky sense of humor myself, she really appealed to me. I hate admitting this, she's a spice girl and I hated them! She really gets a bad rap from what we are fed from the tabloids.
Posted by: Anonymous | July 21, 2007 3:43 PM
NBC has the entire special online (well worth watching) - it intrigued me so much that I googled her. I recommend going to YouTube and watching the "Being Victoria Beckham" series (8 parts). Tabloid photos do not do her justice - she's actually an animated, well spoken, entertaining young woman with an endearing smile. She's a breath of fresh air compared to the LiLo, Brit, Paris crowd.
Posted by: hmmm | July 21, 2007 8:05 PM
I loved this. Found Victoria to be absolutely major and wish there was a reality series. I caught it on Bravo! and even my boyfriend thought she was captivating and funny. I'm 21 and watch E! a lot, while consequently seeing the "Simple Life", and have to say that if Paris and Nicole have their own, then Posh and Becks definitely are deserving.

My god, I didn't even mean to watch last night and I'm entranced. She's fresh, fun, down to earth (well, relatively) and interesting.
Seriously, they just need to give her a show. Who wouldn't watch her go shopping with Katie Holmes?
