Remembering Jane Wyman

I don't claim to know any more about Jane Wyman than the average bear. She was a starlet back when "starlet" meant someone who actually punched a clock at one of Hollywood's major studios. She was the first wife of Republican deity Ronald Reagan. And she presided over one of last of the great primetime soaps, "Falcon Crest."

It was in this last role that she entered my orbit. As a snot-nosed Army brat living in Naples, Italy in the early '80s, I hungrily devoured tapes of American TV shipped overseas for trade in the ex-pat "Betamax club." These tapes were my first introduction to the sublime canon of early-80s TV -- "The Facts of Life," "Too Close for Comfort," "The Barbara Mandrell Show," "Simon and Simon" and, of course, "Falcon Crest."

While "Dallas" left me somewhat flat, I was enchanted by this idyllic California enclave of Mediterranean-esque estates, grape vines and the effete, moody Lorenzo Lamas skulking around looking hot. And, unlike "Dallas's" J.R. Ewing, I found myself somehow liking Wyman's scheming Angela Channing. Sure, she was evil, but she was impeccably-coiffed and not an off-putting yahoo from Texas with a big hat, big boots and big mouth. In a word, she was subtle. Even my 10-year-old mind appreciated her quiet manipulation of the show's other characters. Good writing, for sure, but much credit goes to Wyman for her ability to hit just the right note of queenly condescension.

Wyman's career spanned six decades, four Oscar nominations and one win for her role in "Johnny Belinda," in which she played a deaf mute. Although often asked about her eight-year marriage to Ronald Reagan, she rarely spoke about him in interviews, in 2004 calling him "a great president and a great, kind, and gentle man."

For me, though, she'll forever be Angela Channing -- matriarch of a make-believe California wine empire, here delivering a monologue on the show's finale:

Perhaps this tribute should have been posted on Ms. Wyman's website or in your diary? They should prescribed that clip for insomnia.

Go Liz! I'm a Falcon Crest girl too - it used to be one of the few shows we could stay up late to watch with mom. Here's what a dorkus maximus I am: when I went to Calif. wine country about seven years ago, one of the trip highlights was seeing the house that served as the exterior shot!

"As a snot-nosed Army brat living in Naples, Italy in the early '80s..."

That description explains a lot, Liz. Lol

I'm sorry, but it's hard to get beyond seeing "sublime canon of early-80s TV" and "Too Close for Comfort" in the same sentence. What was this post about again? Oh. Right. Jane Wyman (I always used to confuse her with Jane Wyatt from "Father Knows Best" because they kinda resembled each other). I wasn't a big "Falcon" fan, but Wyman was great in "Johnny Belinda." RIP, hon.

I had to actually look up which one was "Too Close for Comfort." And I watched it every week on tv.

Ms. Wyman was the one of the last of a very special type of actress: brains and looks. Plus she had class. She never talked about her marriage to Reagan because she felt it was tacky to discuss your ex. Wish they still made them like her.

If "they" still made "them" like "her", Celebritology would be about as interesting as watching paint dry.

So let's have three cheers for the bimbettes, skanks, drunkards and halfwits who populate the halls of celebrity!

Also, let's have a shout-out to the bimbos, himbos, druggies, junkies, layabouts, ne'er-do-wells, no-minds, hangers-on and the various other undesirables who also suckle at the teat of Warhol's Fifteen Minutes.

You. Complete. Us.

I have no idea what this post is about. I have never heard of the show, or the woman. This post could've been about the political implications of mineral exportation in Kazakhstan, for all that I understood or enjoyed about it.

I mean that in the nicest way possible. [Smiley Emoticon]

What a snore that was.

"I have never heard of the show, or the woman."

Wow, never heard of Falcon Crest? Or Jane Wyman? Obviously you were born in the 80's (I'm 33 now)...CBS on Friday night 9 - 10 was Dallas, 10 - 11 was Falcon Crest. Friday nights were never the same.

Well, on the same note, I've never heard of Sarah Silverman until yesterday and hope to catch some of the VMA's when MTV replays it 50 times to see what the deal is/was.

Gimme a Break (no pun intended). We can't talk about Britney every day. Well, we can -- but there's room for Jane Wyman, too.

Posted by: Liz | September 11, 2007 3:51 PM

Hip hip hooray!!!!!!! Cheers!!!!
byoolin that's for you.

Falcon Crest was the best. Oh the fights and the shoulder pads, good times good times. Wait..... was that Falcon Crest?

Now stuck in my head:
"Kazakhstan, greatest country in the world
All other countries are run by leetle girls..."

Seriously people, how does this work? If you've never heard of someone, Liz is not allowed to write about them? Then half the people mentioned in this blog need to be 86'd because I don't know who they are. And it's all about me, after all.

cool. liz was an army brat.
me too.

rip, jane wyman. i'm one of the people who knew her from her oscar winning role, 'johnny belinda.' she was quite an actress.

Posted by: methinks | September 11, 2007 6:40 PM

Miss Wyman was one of the last great actresses who worked her way to the top over a span of years filled with long days at the studio and courage. No overnight whining talentless child, but someone who earned her money and fame.
Todays so-called stars make one movie to introduce her, one fairly fine film to buy her a house in the Hollywood hills and then two or three stinkers to show how truly bad she is as an actress. Then oblivion.
Jane thank you for years of top notch work and showing what a true star is. Sweet Dreams.

Liz does a lot with variety to entertain us. If you're bored by something, why be hateful. Next week, Liz might pick YOUR favorite obscure actor..

For an earlier look at Jane Wyman, check out the great clip (on youtube) of her and Bing Crosby singing the Oscar winning "In the Cool Cool Cool of the Evening" from the movie Here Comes the Groom. They performed it live for the scene, the music piped in through earpieces. They are both obviously having a ball.

don't be discouraged by the lack of knowledge of the readers who responded to your article yesterday on jane wyman. film buffs well know who she is, no matter what their ages. only dumbbells express a lack of interest in an accomplished person, drooling instead for more articles on the anticipated meltdowns of spears and the gang. this column reflects your opinion and interests and everyone else can pound sand.

"don't be discouraged by the lack of knowledge of the readers who responded to your article yesterday on jane wyman."

It was more a matter of the writer making the subject dull...

Liz, if you're interested in attending the Naples American H.S. or Forrest Sherman H.S. reunion for the classes of 1980-1986, drop me a line at tmkpk at earthlink dot net. The reunion will be in Orlando, Florida in July 2008.
