Comment Box: Leave Hannah Montana Alone
I can't wait til Hannah Montana gets a little older and then crashes like Britney and Lindsay and Paris and Nicole. She's headed there. What do you think? -- Submitted to last week's Celebritology Live chat
I'm including this crass question because it reminded me of a perception that I see pretty often -- usually from folks who profess a certain distaste for celebrity news: The belief that all starlets are on an unstoppable collision course with what we will hereby dub "The Brit-down."
Definition: Brit-down
The period of time in which a young female celebrity may experience one or more of the following:
-- An ill-advised romantic entanglement resulting in an Internet sex video, a short-lived marriage or an obsession with Marilyn Manson.
-- An addiction to drugs, alcohol, paparazzi cameras, plastic surgery, hair extensions, tanning salons or Taco Bell.
-- Jail time, rehab or an alcohol-monitoring anklet.
-- Public humiliation in the form of: a botched performance, a disjointed interview or one's own category on TMZ.com.
While we tend to concentrate on starlets we can openly scorn, they are truly the exception, not the rule. For every Britney Spears or Tara Reid there are 10 Scarlett Johanssons, Liv Tylers, Christina Aguileras, Raven Simones and, yes, Miley Cyruses (aka "Hannah Montana") who manage to weather their teenage years in the spotlight to emerge as steady, solid performers and human beings. But, like the thousands of planes that fly every day without incident, we don't necessarily start paying attention until there is a cataclysmic crash. It all goes back to that schadenfreude thing we talk about here again and again.
But there's a difference between simply observing these train wrecks and actively wishing one on a young star. Based on your question, you seem to be particularly keen on seeing the 15-year-old Cyrus screw up, but big. And this, I can't abide. Sure, Miley's a cheesy, Disney-minted TV star who is so sickeningly sweet as to induce Diabetes, but I don't see any indications that point to a Brit-down. And despite an Olsen-sized empire in the making, Cyrus strikes me as relatively grounded. And she's got dad Billy Ray, who has been in the music biz for years, to help her over the rougher parts of the business:
"I tried to discourage Miley from pursuing the entertainment business because it's a double-edged sword, " said Billy Ray in a 2006 interview. "For everything that makes you happy, there's something equally heartbreaking. I see her being Miley Cyrus. She will never be somebody else. She's got her own thing. I think she takes and borrows and hints at a little bit of a lot of people. ... But she's her own person."
And when this bogus pregnancy rumor made the rounds a couple of weeks ago it was quickly dismissed. Thankfully, never reached the ears of my Hannah Montana-loving seven-year-old niece.
An actor that I love but is never in the media is James Franco. So cute. What's he up to these days? (besides cameos in Judd Apatow movies...) -- -- Submitted to last week's Celebritology Live chat
I have to admit, I'm not incredibly familiar with Franco's body of work and a quick scan of his IMDB credits reveals why: I haven't seen most of the movies in which he's acted. (No, not even any of the "Spider-Man" trilogy. Sosumi.) And, alas, I still haven't gotten around to watching the highly recommended short-lived series "Freaks and Geeks" on DVD. Maybe I should give him a try, though. This expletive-laced "Knocked Up" outtake reveals a keen sense of humor and his roles seem to be transitioning from teen snacks ("Tristan + Isolde," "Mean People Suck") to more mature fare (Paul Haggis's"In the Valley of Elah") with a dash of hipper-than-thou comedy thrown in -- look for him next year in "Pineapple Express," a comedy co-written by "Knocked Up" co-star Seth Rogan.

I think that Hannah Montana is headed down the road with Brit, Paris, Nicole and Lindsay. It happens to most child stars

I think some of the Miley-hate is a by-product of residual Achey-Breaky hate directed at her cheesetacular father. And the first poster got it right: her goody-goody, almost holier-than-thou answers in some recent interviews ain't helpin'. All that said -- wasn't there similar hate-spew directed at Hillary Duff during the Lizzie McGuire years?
Seems to me that, as repugnant as hating on famous teeners may seem to the "leave the poor little girl alone" crowd, it might just be that it comes with the territory. And, honestly, they entered public life voluntarily, just like adult celebs, and part of the trade-off for the fame and money is being placed in the public eye, with all the rumor, innuendo, and inevitable dislike/distaste/hatred. Seems to me that claiming it's off-limits to engage in the standard "wishing misfortune of stars you despise (even for silly or otherwise inexplicable reasons)" simply because they're minors amounts to an almost distasteful attempt to protect a group of people who already lead privleged lives even further. Because, quite frankly, based on her preternaturaly creepy quasi-adult demeanor, who doesn't anxiously await Dakota Fanning's Drew Barrymore-like break-down (with or without the subsequent recovery)?

Um, Liz, did you read any of the tabloids for the past, say, 8 years? I mean, Christina Aguilera was, and to some degree still is, a mess. She may not have had the complete breakdown that Britney has had, but if she's your role model for the "good" side, that's pretty sad. Read interviews with her and you'll see how screwed up she is.

Oooooh, Ryan! Way to throw down the gauntlet! I'd like to see a celebritology smack-down!! The notes and articles you find, vs. those that Liz has! Give it to us, baby! Hit us one more... oh, nevermind. But that could be a fun bloggy activity - some articles pro, others con, see what we think (putting aside for a moment, of course, our predisposition in favor of the opinions of the tatooed flat-pants advocating lady who owns this site).
Whaddaya say, Liz? Silly or fun?

It's one thing to watch the train wreck happening in front of you, it's quite another to sit by the tracks every day hoping one of the trains will jump the track. There might be a little something wrong with the first, but there's a whole lot wrong with the second.

Then, why didn't you name more than four?

James Franco is definitely worth seeing in Freaks & Geeks; he benefitted from having a role that could have been a clicheish stoner boy that had more depth than you realized, and Franco ran with it.

How do you know the kids got into this of their own free will? First of all, as minors, they can't legally consent to the contracts. Second, kids don't always make the best decisions based on an objective review of the facts. They see the fun stuff and think the bad stuff won't happen to them (oh, I don't die in a drunk driving accident, I'm just having fun). So, to say that kids put themselves out there and just have to accept the bad stuff is imposing adult thinking on kids. Who, let me re-iterate this -- might have been pushed into stardom by parents who put their own desires for attention ahead of the good of their children.

I certainly wouldn't wish any ill will on Miley Cyrus, but I think her being compared to Britney Spears is unfair. She's only fourteen - at that age, Britney was fresh off of the Mickey Mouse Club and had a clean track record as well. Life gets a bit more difficult to handle when one gets older. I'm not excusing Britney's behavior, but I do not think that Miley has it quite as rough.
Posted by: Noelle | October 8, 2007 1:27 PM
I'd seriously like to see you cut and paste a portion of an interview with Christina Aguilara from the last year or two in which she seems like a mess. All I've seen is her marry a nice, non-famous guy and allegedly get pregnant. Seems normal enough to me.
Posted by: Re: Ryan | October 8, 2007 1:29 PM
OH!! "Allegedly pregnant!" Bring out the denunciations!! Noooooooooo!
Posted by: | October 8, 2007 1:40 PM
I agree with Noelle. But I won't say she's hasn't "had it rough", it's just that her father:
a) probably has enough money of his own that he doesn't consider her a meal ticket รก la the Lohans/Spears families, and
b) said parent seems to actually be an involved guardian during these teen years. Look on IMDB - many of the pictures of her at awards ceremonies and openings have Miley and Billy Ray Cyrus are arm in arm. Not to mention he's on the show with her - that's like having your Dad be a teacher at your school ;)
Who knows what the future brings, but Miley Cyrus at least has parents who seem to take their parental role seriously, and that should make a huge difference as her professional life goes forward.

Thanks for posting the link to the James Franco outtake - what a riot! I've liked him more after each thing I've seen him in, the comedic thing really shows how talented he is. Love Kristen Wigg (sp?) from SNL, too.
And totally agree with the watching-the-train-derail-rather-than-actually-hoping-it-will comment. There are tons of place on the net where you can go to bash celebs - this one just covers the idiot things they do all on their own, without any wishful thinking from us! We're a fair and balanced gossip source that way! heh heh

What Miley has to do is stay away from Taco Bell, KFC, and Quizno's. I'm sorry, but Brit's eating habits gross me out almost as much as the rest of her.
And for god's sake, don't buy a (or 12? or 15?) useless little dog(s)!

Since I have no connection to the tween set, I don't know that much about Miley Cyrus, but my impression when the pregnancy scandal hit the fan was that she has made several "I'll never end up like Britney" comments and that this offends some people. First of all, I would imagine that if she is making "Britney bashing" comments, it is probably in response to someone asking what she thinks of Britney, et al. But, also, even if she is a bit of a stuck up, goody-goody, it's awfully disgusting for people to sit around waiting for her to fall off of her high horse. Good for Liz for saying something about it.
