Joe Francis....I think people should give your fight for freedom as much thought and consideration as you give those drunk college girls in your videos.
Posted by: Anonymous | October 25, 2007 8:55 AM
Um...I know what Halle said was bad, especially considering that her career in Hollywood is probably at the pleasure of a lot of Jews, but gosh, does anyone really dispute the fact that a lot of Jewish folks have big noses. I mean, we know black people genearlly have wide ones and white people usually have pointy, long noses.
I mean, why take offense when it's true? It's not like she said Jews are ugly or she hates them. I mean, look at Sarah Silverman's remark about her Jew nose; nobody's mad at that, are they?

How does Joe Francis have access to the internet? Isn't he in jail partly for threatening the girls who sued him? He can do that just easily via internet.
I differ with those who differ that Purple Rain is the best rock album of all time.

i am stunned that don henley is so naive to think that because wal-mart is the eagles exclusive north american distributer that he'll have a direct line to the ceo re: wal-mart's corporate green-ness.
this is a company that does things he describes when he sings 'the last resort' from hotel california. (you know, raping the land and putting up big boxes...)
and yes, i know it offers lots of jobs to lots of people who wouldn't ordinarily have them and generally i'm pro-business but this smacks of blatant commercialism and sellout of a very high order.
i'm also sad to admit that the eagles, great band that they were, don't have the financial clout they once had, in terms of record sales. i seriously doubt their sales through wal-mart (where many eagles fans refuse to shop) will reap a financial windfall that leads to henley having sway over corporate policy.
wow. i'm debbie downer.

I know Debbie Gibson is a D-lister but she can do better than the sleazy looking idol guy. eeww

Actually, 8:58, people of Mediterranean descent often have larger noses, whether they be Catholic, Jewish, or Muslim. Ethiopian Jews, Ashkenazi Jews, Jews from Northen Europe do not have "big noses". The point is, the description of that trait has been used evilly for hundreds of years in anti-Jewish propaganda. A review of some of humanities abhorrent history gives you an idea of the danger of these images. You might want to start with The Spanish Inquisition: A History by Joseph Perez, (Janet Lloyd, Translator). The same principle applies to the "Blacks have big lips". It might be informative to look at the vile cartoons and images of Blacks from not so long ago (and the characters in Holly wood films from even more recently). Racism and antisemitism are alive and well, and we don't need to perpetuate images and stereotypes that have been traditionally used to subjugate and marginalize oppressed groups.

argh, that was supposed to be "humanity's". Sorry.

I need to say that Purple Rain is absolutely the best movie soundtrack there ever has been and ever will be!!!

Friday list, Liz: biggest sell-outs. Bob Dylan for Cadillac needs to be up there.
Posted by: Anonymous | October 25, 2007 9:40 AM
May I suggest that Halle's current discomforture stems from a failure to recognize one of the costs of celebrity. Lots of people make ethnic jokes with their friends (though, generally, it is better to lampoon one's own ethnic group. See: Silverman, Sarah), but what is all in good fun backstage with people who know your heart, is not funny when you are the featured guest on a national broadcast. Isn't that part of celbritology 101? Is there a list idea here? 10 dumbest celebrity statements? No points if speaker is Mel Gibson
Posted by: schnoz | October 25, 2007 9:50 AM
Considering the whole Michael Richards fiasco, what Halle said was pretty benign, it will not hurt her career and she apologized almost immediately, although going on about her "jewish friends" made me cringe.
By the way, Purple Rain is the best soundtrack...EVER.

I always wondered what Portia saw in Ellen. If you're going to be in a lesbian relationship you might as well be in one of relative equals. I wonder if she's going to da an Anne Heche and swing the other way now?

How can Brit possibly even need anti-sleep medication w/all the Starbucks products running through her veins? Also, that mustache is beginning to take on a life of its own!
Posted by: jes | October 25, 2007 10:19 AM
yes, what halle berry said was benign, but people, be they celebs or just us regular folks, have to understand that you don't make ethnic comments. why that's so difficult to 'get' is something i've yet to figure out. why anyone, in this day and age of PC speech combined with the internet, would make a 'joke' about an ethnic group is beyond comprehension. the fact that she knew what she'd said was wrong right away was good, but oh how i wish she'd never said it. nvertheless she's in some heady company...even former ambassador andrew young made bigoted comments last year right after all the mel gibson mess.

My Grandmother always said you should look your best going out at night just in case something happens you don't want to be embarrassed. Seeing the picture of Gary Collins, Grandma was right.

I second the motion: Friday's list should be biggest corporate sell-outs. Bob Dylan clearly tops the list, shilling for both Cadillac and Victoria's Secret. Honorable mentions: Ben Folds for Hilton Hotels and Stephen Merritt for Volvo.
At first I was upset when I saw John Legend in a Lexus commercial, but the story he tells is so hot that I can't stay mad at him. Everyone should look up that ad on YouTube if you haven't already. My my.

I feel the same way about the new Cadillac commercials with that New Zealand actor, Martin Henderson. As soon as I hear his voice, I could watch anything he's selling. :)

"...I was upset when I saw John Legend in a Lexus commercial, but the story he tells is so hot that I can't stay mad at him."
So it's okay to shill for Corporate America, so long as you look good doing it and have an entertaining story to tell on the talk shows?
Wow. So much for personal ethics and integrity.
Posted by: MisterBear | October 25, 2007 12:26 PM
Uhhh, wouldn't the right time for Brit and K-Fed to take a parenting class have been BEFORE they became parents?
Posted by: Well D~U~H | October 25, 2007 12:29 PM
Damn, I was going to say that.

Umm, they are celebrities. What ethics and integrity? Do they have some code the rest of us aren't privvy too? I thought the point of being a celeb was to have your name out there, whatever way that is.

Yes, and if they through in a new car the better.

We are Corporate America. The Revolution wasn't televised it was brought with low-interest credit.
Posted by: NYU | October 25, 2007 12:49 PM
Liz, how do you decide which items go under "rumor mill" and which go under "headlines?" Is it based on source? Verifiability?
What made me wonder was the Constantine/Debbie Gibson item in "gossip," but it doesn't seem any more gossipy or unreliable than some of the "headline" items.
Posted by: Sarah | October 25, 2007 1:38 PM
"We are Corporate America. The Revolution wasn't televised it was bought with low-interest adjustable rate credit."
NYU: Fixed your typo.
I for one won't be buying any more Eagles albums. I don't patronize Mal-Wort.

LIz, you cannot compare the Donnie Darko soundtrack with Purple Rain. Donnie Darko was a compilation of lots of great songs from different artists; it is easy to make a great compilation album. Prince wrote the whole soundtrack to Purple Rain and it is, quite simply, a masterpiece.

I'd like to add Dr. Phil to any sellout list. He's hocked match.com, weight loss snack bars and shakes, his books, his wife's book, his son's book, and once I saw "Dr. Phil scrubs" on his website for sale, even though he isn't an MD.
Posted by: sarabear | October 25, 2007 2:08 PM
I had to hold my nose and buy the eagles album from stuff-mart...I think the defense is lame (as much as Don Henley is my ideal hot older man)...
Posted by: latecomer | October 25, 2007 2:15 PM
Mojo Nixon was right about Don Henley.

Dr. Phil scrubs??????? hehehehehehehehe
