Friday List: Outsized Egos Edition

Alec Baldwin (aka The Bloviator) competes for the room's oxygen supply with Rosie O'Donnell and Barbara Walters during this April 2007 'View' appearance. (Reuters)
It's an ugly side effect of fame: celebrities who take themselves way too seriously. Symptoms may include a perception that one can sway an election, write op-eds in major newspapers, sustain a daily blog or spend an hour talking about one's prison experiences on "Larry King Live."
In yesterday's Celebritology Live discussion, readers unburdened themselves, disclosing their most personally annoying self-important celebs: "I think Denzel needs an editor and a publicist to keep him intriguing," said one after listening to this NPR interview. "Katherine Heigl," said another, perhaps referring to the actress's recent bite-the-hand-that-feeds-you criticism of "Knocked Up." Alec Baldwin (dubbed "The Bloviator" by the New York Post), the insouciant Gwyneth Paltrow, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly -- all were cited as being shameless self-absorbed attention hogs.
Now it's your turn. Go ahead, add your nominee to this roll call of the self-obsessed. And share your opinion on who is the worse offender -- a star who is shamelessly self-centered (a la Kanye West) or one (Oprah) who cloaks her self-importance in the guise of using one's celebrity to "raise awareness?"

Tom Cruise, Tom Cruise, Tom Cruise...had me at goodbye with all that Matt Lauer glib stuff.
Posted by: smitty | January 4, 2008 10:52 AM
Gweneth Paltrow takes the cake as most self-important star (in my book anyway). She just thinks she's so precious. But honestly, what serious and grounded person names their kid after a piece of fruit...and not even a nice tropical or citrus fruit? Whatever, Gwen. Get over yourself.

My list:
Sean Penn
Madonna
TYRA BANKS
Rosie
Donald Trump
Jane Fonda
Sally Field
Star Jones

While there are those actors and actresses who keep a low profile, can we please remember something here?
Actors/Actresses have chosen a profession where people pay attention to them - even more so in this day and age. They do tend to be narcissists, folks, even if it's only just a little bit.
So if you stroke/feed that ego with constant media attention about how wonderful and smart they are (even if it isn't true), you think they're not going to go out of control?
I think it's more about Cult of Personality than anything else. Some people want to know EVERYTHING about their favorite actor/actress, so the entertainment press is gonna ask this stuff to appease their customer base. It's a never-ending cycle...
Posted by: Chasmosaur1 | January 4, 2008 10:58 AM
Rosie O'Donnell - hasn't been funny in years. She needs to get off her soapbox ...
And, a little reminder for Oprah that, while her charity is commendable, in the end, it's about giving to others. As soon as it becomes more about her and the spotlight, it ceases to be charity.
Yeesh - I can't decide whose ego is bigger.

Posted by: Mina | January 4, 2008 11:03 AM
My list:
Tom Hanks - I'm such a good actor and so super serious I can't even hint at the fact that I used to do comedy because that's so below me now.
Tom Cruise - I'm crazy, I'm religious, I'm in love!
Tyra Banks - I'm the next Oprah!
Rosie - Now that I'm out everyone should listen to me or they're homophobic!
Posted by: sjcpeach | January 4, 2008 11:06 AM
I had a T theme going there for a moment but Rosie just had to butt in!
Posted by: sjcpeach | January 4, 2008 11:07 AM
Definitely second the Katherine Heigl nom! I've disliked her ever since she kept rushing to TR Knight's defense long after everyone was sick of talking about Isiah's comments. Combined with the "misrepresented" comments about "Knocked Up" and how she just won't shut up about how she's not going to award shows to support the writers, I'm fed up. I'm not going to see a movie I probably would have liked ("27 Dresses") just because I want her to GO AWAY.

In no particular order (other then how they pop into my head)
Oprah
Tyra Banks
Rosie O'D.
Sally Field
Madonna
Alec Baldwin
Al Gore
Michael Moore
Any celeb that openly endorses and campaigns for a Presidential Candidate.
Posted by: Kim | January 4, 2008 11:11 AM
Oprah
Rosie
Tom Cruise
Mel Gibson
Paris Hilton
Of course now I have to go back & read the transcript because I forgot yesterday was chat day & missed it.

1) Justin Timberlake: He has become sooo self important. During his European Tour, he was rude to his fans, the press and his girlfriend all in one day.
No wonder, Cameron Diaz didn't marry his punk-@#.
2) Sean "P-Diddy" Combs: He is so in love with himself why does he bother dating.
Posted by: Lisa1 | January 4, 2008 11:14 AM
Oprah.
Her philanthropy is one big photo op. She couldn't put a dime in the Salvation Army kettle without calling a press conference.
Posted by: magpie | January 4, 2008 11:20 AM
I'm going to definitely go for the Denzel Washington nomination. I recently read an interview he did in some way too serious fashion magazine (Vogue, Elle?) about his new movie. It was the most difficult interview I've ever read and I can only imagine the poor person doing the interview. He was dilberately difficult and full of himself and his work... it totally put me off on him
Posted by: ARp1883 | January 4, 2008 11:27 AM
sjcpeach, surely not Tom Hanks? Didn't he do that thing on his myspace or facebook page a couple of weeks ago that was pretty funny? (I think he ran over a homeless guy or something in his electric car and then blamed it on diCaprio, if I recall correctly.)
Posted by: byoolin | January 4, 2008 11:30 AM
A thousand times over Mrs. Martin aka Gwyneth Paltrow.
Posted by: petal | January 4, 2008 11:31 AM
Our own (speaking metaphorically, of course, not in terms of real property) Liz Kelly wrote glowingly of Tom's Myspace page:

TOM CRUISE! OPRAH!
Also - Jessica Simpson, Oprah, Janice Dickinson (who cares who she was and what a twit she is now)
Posted by: lydacole | January 4, 2008 11:42 AM
I hate it when celebrities do the politics thing. These people are barley smart enough to tie their own shoes, much less form coherent political opinions. We've all seen Celebrity Jeopardy.

Richard Gere gets my vote
Posted by: no name | January 4, 2008 11:46 AM
I don't know - I think I still stand by my Tom Hanks post. It has gotten where I don't want to see him in any movie because he is either mis-cast or just so dull. And I think its because he has built himself up as this "GREAT" actor that can do anything. Maybe in his personal life he can be more laid back but mostly I just see him as taking himself too seriously.
Posted by: sjcpeach | January 4, 2008 11:53 AM
Kevin Costner. His appearance on Inside the Actors Studio (which is one big ego-fest anyway) showed someone so blatantly unaware of the gap between his self-perceived talent and his *actual* talent that I almost, but not quite, felt sorry for James Lipton.
Barbra Streisand is another whose sense of her importance in the world is rather wildly skewed.
Patricia Heaton is another one who should stick to acting.

Apparently I'm barely smart enough to spell barely. :-p
Posted by: jelo | January 4, 2008 11:56 AM
Matthew McConaughey
Lance Armstrong
(They tend to think they own Austin)
Rob Reiner
George Clooney
Steven Spielberg and George Lucas
Posted by: michael | January 4, 2008 12:03 PM
Wil Wheaton (of ST:TNG) is sort of the opposite of what you're looking for. But he may be worth a Style piece someday. He's got a blog: http://wilwheaton.typepad.com/, and posts at Slashdot (ask Rob Pegoraro about that) as CleverNickName.
Fun, and funny, guy.
Posted by: wiredog | January 4, 2008 12:09 PM
Tied for first place on my list: Rosie O'Donnell (she could go away, never to be heard from again and I'd be very happy) and Tom Cruise (just plain ick). Lance Armstrong, Al Gore, Denzel Washington, Ophrah (I used to like her, she such exudes self importance - hate the way she interupts everyone).
Posted by: WI | January 4, 2008 12:12 PM
Rob Reiner
Robert Redford
Elmer Fudd (so pretentious with the double d)
Eggs (the incredible, edible egg? hardly)
Ellen (People are Mean)

I agree. Gweneth Paltrow. Every time I see her "Pleasures" commercial, I want to vomit.
Posted by: K. O'Brien | January 4, 2008 12:32 PM
In no particular order:
Oprah
Tom Cruise
John Travolta
Sean Penn
Katherine Heigl
Dakota Fanning (I feel kind of bad about this, but she annoys me)
Madonna
Gwyneth Paltrow
Rosie O'Donnell
Kanye West
Kirstie Alley
Justin Timberlake
Timbaland
Hulk Hogan (I heard a radio interview this morning and he came across and really smug and self-serving)
any young female celebrity who is only famous for being famous (Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian, et al)
Posted by: Magnolia | January 4, 2008 12:34 PM
Excellent call on Barbra Streisand. Yech. Ditto Janice Dickinson-seriously, as I've mentioned before, she looks like the Cryptkeeper. I don't give two craps about her opinions on Tyra Banks' weight, or anything else for that matter.
Donald Trump, but I think his ego is a crucial part of his persona. Without it, he would whither away and only the dead muskrat covering his head would remain.
Rounding out the list: Katherine Heigl, Kanye West, Sean Penn, 50 Cent, Chuck Norris, Paris Hilton, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion
Posted by: ASinMoCo | January 4, 2008 12:35 PM
Bill O'Reilly
Ann Coulter
Posted by: musicgeek | January 4, 2008 12:36 PM
How is it that no one has mention Donald Trump yet??? He is the worst!
Posted by: AlexS | January 4, 2008 12:41 PM
I fully agree with Chasmosaur: these people all got into the entertainment biz because they love performing and being the center of attention, wherever they go.
Being narcissistic and self-impressed is as much a part of the job description as doing promotional interviews for their films (or CDs or TV appearances). It's in their DNA. Some of them are just less obvious about it than others.
And it's the ones who are overly obvious and take themselves too seriously (Oprah, Trump, Cruise, O'Donnell) that draw our ire (not to mention our fire).
Posted by: MisterBear | January 4, 2008 12:44 PM
Ophrah
Katherine Heigl
Rosie
Sean Penn
Gweneth Paltrow
Posted by: D W | January 4, 2008 12:46 PM
Any actor or singer who campaigns for any politician! These people make they're living having other people put words in their mouths! That just goes to show you how delusional they are to think (and I use that word loosely) that I'm suppose to believe that they have an original thought of their own!
Posted by: MLF | January 4, 2008 12:51 PM
Any actor who makes reference to his or her "craft".

Posted by: | January 4, 2008 12:55 PM
Oprah and her galpal Gail (both insufferable)
Dr. Phil -- a real joke
Eva Longoria
Ann Coulter
Bono
Bill O'Reilly
Rosie O'Donnell
The Donald
Paris/Lindsay/Crazy Britney -- and the rest of the trailer trash talentless young bimbos being passed off as celebrities
Gwyneth Paltrow
Posted by: pnina | January 4, 2008 1:00 PM
I agree with the Gwenyth (or whatever) Paltrow and add a Jeremy Piven.
Posted by: phan | January 4, 2008 1:22 PM
Gwyneth Paltrow
Katherine Heigel
Tom Cruise
Did I mention Gwyneth Paltrow?
Posted by: unmute | January 4, 2008 1:27 PM

sean penn is right there at the top of my list. him an alex baldwin. both just irk the snot out of me.
Posted by: melissa | January 4, 2008 1:31 PM
Previous posters have already named all the people on my perp list. But I want to name one person whose ego trumps the others...and I'm not talking about The Donald.
Who else but this person would not only name a magazine after themselves, but also put themselves on the cover of their eponymous magazine EACH and EVERY FREAKIN' MONTH???
Yes, my snarky friends, as the commercial says, it's all about the O, isn't it?
Posted by: Sasquatch | January 4, 2008 1:33 PM
No one's mentioned Simon Cowell yet?? I don't watch AI and I can't even stand him.
Good calls with Tom, Celine, Barbara S., Rosie, etc.
Posted by: WDC 21113 | January 4, 2008 1:34 PM
Gosh, previous posters have really hit all of my least favorites.
I just want to shake Katherine Heigl by the shoulders and tell her that NOBODY cares what she thinks. She seems like she's standing at the ready to weigh in on any other topic du jour, but from her past comments, she doesn't really say much that shows any depth, insight, or intelligence. Until she can do THAT, she needs a muzzle.
Others on my "oh, PLEASE stop" list are:
* Tyra Banks (like KH, utterly devoid of original/interesting thoughts)
* Tom Cruise (also - will you and Madonna both please stop acting)
* Madonna (too old for pop, too trendy-religious to be taken seriously)
* Michael Moore (see "Sean Penn")
* Rosie O'Donnell (once funny, now she's just crazy/angry)
* Sean Penn (yeah, we get it, you hate Bush and are anti-war)
* Donald Trump (so smug, I wonder how people manage to breathe around him)
* Oprah (somehow I both love and loathe her)
While I would love it if Ann Coulter and Bill O'Reilly - and Sean Hannity! - shut up permanently, it really is their job to mouth off, so I suppose it can be excused. But the rest of these people? Bah.
Posted by: oregonchick | January 4, 2008 1:49 PM
How is it Julia Roberts has been missed? She's a terrible actress (apparently they give out Oscars for playing the only part you can play well) and she's always smiling like she knows we all love her. Enough with the Danny Moder love-fest too.
Posted by: Lit lover | January 4, 2008 1:56 PM
ugh, how could I forget Donald Trump from my list. His piggy eyes and duck lips absolutely make me queasy, also I will forever have a crush on ASinMoCo for the phrase 'the dead muskrat covering his head'
Posted by: jes | January 4, 2008 1:58 PM
Hey, why all the hate? Do people stop being activists or caring about issues because they are famous? Shouldn't we encourage Clooney to speak out against the genocide in Darfur? It seems like people here think that celebs must just be one dimensional entertainers. I did not give up my right to political opinions when I took my job. Why should we critique others for having opinions and or supporting political causes.
That said... I had a huge Toby Maguire crush after "Wonder Boys" until I read an article where he admitted to bringing his own macrobiotic chef with him to restaurants.
Posted by: L8yF8 | January 4, 2008 2:01 PM
For all you people patting yourselves on the back for coming up with Donald Trump so late in the list (I'm looking at you AlexS), I point your attention to Anonimis'post at 10:56am. Yeah, that's right, the FOURTH post in the list. Question: still feeling smugly witty or just a little remedial about your questionable reading comprehension skills?
Posted by: Wait a minute... | January 4, 2008 2:40 PM
In response to L8yF8, I'd like to point out that Clooney doesn't seem to be on anyone's list. It's not so much whether someone has personal opinions or expresses them, but more HOW they choose to deliver those opinions.
George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Susan Sarandon, Michael J. Fox, Bono, and others are absolutely fine in my book. They are committed to their causes, they speak about them with knowledge and conviction, and they consistently put their money where their mouth is.
What causes me to roll my eyes and consider boycotting their movies, TV shows, etc. is when they are clearly ill-informed, don't actually have anything of substance to say, or say things in a way that seems to be more about getting attention for themselves than for whatever their supposed cause is. That's what reeks of self-importance: "I don't have to know anything at all, but here's my pronouncement on the subject, and you will all listen because I am clearly *so* fascinating!"
Posted by: oregonchick | January 4, 2008 3:11 PM
Has anyone mentioned Susan Sarandon and her once-handsome hubby Tim Robbins? They never miss an opportunity to stand on their soap box!
Posted by: irritated | January 4, 2008 3:37 PM
...Oprah, Tom Cruise and Rosie are annoying. I mean, does every single person who responds need to add them?
Posted by: we get it... | January 4, 2008 3:40 PM
CELINE DION!
Posted by: did i miss this one? | January 4, 2008 3:41 PM
Celine Dion....GOOD one!
Posted by: | January 4, 2008 3:47 PM
I second most of these posts, but particularly Gwyneth Paltrow. She's definitely beautiful and definitely talented, but she has that manner that says she's better than anyone else around her. I think the correct term is "snob."
For some reason, one quote sticks out in my mind. Entertainment Weekly did a story several years ago on "The Royal Tenenbaums," and Paltrow was talking about dyeing her hair for the part. She mentioned something about Wes Anderson telling her to dye her hair the color of her "camel-colored Helmut Lang leather jacket." Well, dear, good for you for having a Helmut Lang jacket. Kudos.
Posted by: kleewrite | January 4, 2008 3:53 PM
I second that John Travolta nom. For someone who made his career playing the cool guy, he always strikes me as trying soooo hard to be cool when he's on Letterman. Yes, Dave, here's a picture of my back yard with 5 huge jets. Yes, Dave, I do fly that commercial airplane. Ugh.
Tom Hanks and George Clooney seem like the opposite to me: I didn't want to like them, but I find them delightfully self-deprecating. Hanks seems to be an NPR junkie: he's been on "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" and once, after being a puzzle answer from the previous week, stayed around to play the puzzle with a listener.
Posted by: megan | January 4, 2008 3:53 PM
William Shatner! The man seemed to think he was entitled to be in the new Star Trek movie. Bill you don't own the series, calm down. Jack Nicholsan, who gave an interview in which he was upset, like Shatner, that he wasn't approached to be the Joker in The Dark Knight. Guys just b/c you played the role once doesn't mean your entitled to it now and forever. Get over yourselves.
Posted by: Trek | January 4, 2008 4:02 PM
Okay, folks, we're missing some of the elephants and donkeys in the room:
George Dubya Bush, Chosen By GOD!!!!
Alberto Gonzalez, aka Bush Enabler
Dick Cheney, aka Darth Vader
Harry Reid, aka, Big Wuss
Donald Rumsfeld, aka, Rum-Dumb
I think many of their sycophants, such as Hannity, Limbaugh and Coulter, have already been named.
Posted by: Sasquatch | January 4, 2008 4:27 PM
No, not The Donald! He's in a category all his own - we can't put him in the same group as these mere overblown egotists.
I'm giving all my votes to Madonna, Bill O'Reilly, and the ever-enchanting Brangelina - can't decide which of the two of them is more annoying. Although I LOOOOVE to hate celebrities, these four I could seriously do without. I don't even enjoy hating them anymore. The fun is gone, people.
Huge ups for remembering to throw Julia Roberts out there. "All I want to do is be a homemaker and cook organic food..." Why don't you just DO it already? Like the kids will grow up destitute if you stop "working"?
Posted by: jaybbub | January 4, 2008 4:33 PM
I can't stand Kid Rock.
I'm from Michigan, his home state, but I just don't understand the attraction at all. And he is the male version of all the female star screw-ups, with his endless fist fights and stupid actions.
Posted by: CJB | January 4, 2008 4:54 PM
I second these:
(fake journalists)
Rush Limbaugh
Ann Coulter
(fake doctors)
Dr. Phil
Dr. Laura
Posted by: CJB | January 4, 2008 5:01 PM
I think Anderson Cooper has become a bit full of himself these days...
(I LOVED Kathy Griffin skewering him on New Year's eve...)
Posted by: CJB | January 4, 2008 5:03 PM
No one mentioned the awful Elizabeth Hasselbeck or whatever way you spell her name.
She is self-importance personified.
And throw Sherri Shepherd in there too for just being an idiot.
And that curly haired guy from Entourage who nearly ruined The Devil Wears Prada for me Adrien Grenier-don't like him.
I used to like Gwyneth until the whole "insouciant" thing. What a snob!
And Puffy has always annoyed me with his outsized ego even when Biggie Smalls was alive.

Ditto for Katie "it's all about me" Couric who looks more and more like the Joker every day. I would love to never have to see Pamela Sue Anderson's breasts (whatever shape or size they are currently) ever again. The people who really need to get over themselves also includes Chris Rock, the Olsen twins, and any Osbourne. Oh, it's so fun to diss! On the political front, GW, Cheney, Rice, and Romney.
